When asked to share a foundational experience I had in my college career, Blue Chip Leadership Experience is one of the first things I share. Being involved in Blue Chip was not only an incredible experience during my college career but played an instrumental role in who I am as a professional. Prior to joining Leadership Programs in Student Engagement & Career Development, I spent eight years with THINK TANK as a professional staff member. There are three key lessons I learned while in Blue Chip that shaped my experience at THINK TANK and continues to guide me as a Coordinator with Leadership Programs: Leadership is more than just leading a group, team work makes the dream work, and you get what you give. Leadership is more than just a leading a group. I think a common misconception about leadership is that leadership only occurs if you are the president of a club or a supervisor. One of the earliest pieces of knowledge I gained from Blue Chip quickly demystified this. Through activities and discussions, Blue Chip showed us that leadership does not mean being in charge. Leadership is active engagement in the organization/team/experience/job. Leadership is your actions. As a professional staff member, this lesson has been important as I interact with co-workers and campus partners. I don’t have to be the one leading the meeting, but I can set a strong example. I can help move the group forward by the actions and example I take within the team. This first lesson really leads well into

the second lesson: Team work makes the dream work. Throughout my experience with Blue Chip, the opportunities where I gained the most and enjoyed the most were the opportunities when I had to work as a team. The same has been true in my professional career. These experiences gave me the greatest opportunities for learning. I developed and strengthen skills in communication, team building, listening, and problem solving. As a professional you are likely to be in an office with others—even if your day-to-day work is individual in nature. Being able to interact, work with, and build relationships with others in the office and the organization is important. It makes the work more manageable and enjoyable! Throughout my professional career working with others on projects, presentations, planning, and training has been at the core of the work I do. Blue Chip provided the space to learn how to work with others in a collaborative manner. The final lesson I learned from Blue Chip I learned early on but really came to appreciate with time. You get what you give. These words echoed in my mind throughout my college career. These words guided me to make sure that I wasn’t just signed up to be a member in a club or organization but that I was actively engaging in the experience. It encouraged me to reflect on moments and ask myself, “Why didn’t I enjoy that experience? Did I give all that I could?” I continue use those words to guide my experience as a professional. It puts the responsibility on me. What can I do to continue growing as a professional? Am I giving it my all? Interested in making new friends, developing skills, and making a difference? You have to start somewhere, or so the saying goes. In college, the usual place to start is choosing a major. Once you do that, suddenly you have a place to start: a set of courses to take, specific things to learn, and people to meet. For some, knowing the career they’re pursuing makes choosing a major easy. For others, choosing a major is a necessary part of college, and just a path to get them started, to somewhere. Which leads to the questions, does that path always have to lead to a career? Should it? The short answer is not really. Student Engagement and Career Development surveyed three UA alumni who work for Vanguard, none of whom majored in finance or a major related to finance. So how did they find themselves so far afield of their major, working at one of the world’s largest investment companies? This is the first in a series of three.
Thomas Johnson, Supervisor, Personal Advisor Services, grew up wanting to work in sports, and entertained the idea of becoming a professional athlete.
“I abandoned the idea of being a professional athlete pretty quickly in high school,” remembers Johnson. “I was just not athletically gifted enough to realize that dream.” As a sports fan, though, he still wanted to be involved with sports. “I thought it would be really interesting to either be a sports broadcaster or a sports writer, which led me to becoming a Communication major and a Journalism minor at UA.” His experiences in and out of the college classroom enabled Johnson to have a successful, decade-long career in sports broadcasting right out of college, but eventually he was ready to make a change. “I’m the type of person that’s always looking to challenge myself and to continue learning and growing, so I was looking to make a drastic change for my second career,” explains Johnson.
Still, Johnson found himself relying on some old skills to open new doors.

In the end, it was the skills Johnson developed as a communications major that allowed him to forge different careers in very different industries.
And it was certainly a skill-set that helped him start a new career in finance at Vanguard, as well as having a growthmindset.
“When I was in school, I did not even have a fleeting thought about the financial industry, and yet here I am a supervisor of financial advisors,” says Johnson. “It was a winding path, to end up in a role like this. But it was the best path for me, so it’s important for students to have an open enough mind to realize that not all paths are a straight line and to have the willingness and courage to take a different path when they feel it is time.”

Whether you’re applying for an internship, full-time job, or admission to graduate school, nearly any application will ask you either for a list of references or letters of recommendation. While it may seem like your references will be doing the work in this step, you need to do a few things on your end to make sure you end up with a great recommendation. Here are a few tips to consider:

A quick email detailing what position or
program you’re applying for, what skills you’re hoping they can speak to, and attaching a copy of your current resume can help a potential reference verify your qualifications and provide more evidence in support of your application.
Not all references are created equal. Take time to carefully consider who can give you the best reference. If you’re applying to graduate school, faculty members who have worked with you in your academic area will make the biggest impact. Similarly, if applying for a job, include references from supervisors who can speak about your work style and performance. Cultivate a large network of potential references so that you can pick and choose based on what skills and qualities you’re hoping your reference can vouch for.
KEEP CONTACTS FRESH. While faculty, staff, and former supervisors want to support you, it’s hard to do so if you haven’t spoken to them in years. Select recommenders who you’ve worked with for an
extended period of time and who you’ve maintained a relationship with. Be sure to stay connected through LinkedIn or email to keep them in the loop with what you’ve been up to. Not only will they enjoy hearing updates, but they’ll be ready to speak to how you’ve grown.
SAY THANK YOU!
Recommenders and references should be professional or academic contacts who can speak to your work in context. Recommendations from family and friends may not be taken seriously as the recommendation is clearly biased (of course your mom loves you!), or interviewers may worry that you don’t actually have anyone in your professional life who can speak to your work.
Show your gratitude for their time by following up and letting them know what happened. They’ll love celebrating your wins with you, and even if you don’t get an offer, they’ll be there looking for ways to show you continued support.
DON’T
ASSUME THEY’LL SAY YES. Even for long-standing references and mentors, it’s never good to get a reference call out of the blue. Surprise calls can throw a reference off course if they aren’t sure what you’re going for or how they can best serve as a reference.
USE FAMILY AND FRIENDS.
WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE.
Writing a good letter of recommendation can take a long time, so be sure to give your contacts plenty of time to write your letter- at least two weeks, and more if you can.
FORGET TO FOLLOW UP. Haven’t heard from your reference? Stay on top of it and be sure to send a reminder. You may want to ask at least one more person to write a letter than you’ll need so that if someone can’t get you a letter in time, you can still complete the application process.
