“F

orget all your worries and cares and just laugh for 60 minutes.”

This is how Brooke Hartnett, administrative director of the Charles Darwin Experience, describes the club’s weekly improvisational comedy shows.

The Charles Darwin Experience is a comedy improv troupe at the UA that puts on weekly one-hour shows every Tuesday evening. Since being founded about 16 years ago, the troupe has come a long way. It placed first at the College Improv Tournament for the Golden Gate Regional on Saturday. It will be going to Chicago for the national championships this March.

The troupe owes its success to the passion and hard work of its members, a diverse group of students majoring in everything from psychology to theatre studies to biochemical engineering. In addition to being a creative writing senior, Hartnett leads extensive practices.

“We practice together at least four hours a week, plus performance time and any other outside performances

no craft behind it if you are doing it right,” Hartnett said. “There are so many secret behind-the-scenes techniques that make good improv good. One of these is the idea of ‘Yes, And.’ When doing a scene, you always want to agree with and add on to whatever your partner is saying.

You are in a made-up universe with made-up people, so you cannot negate what you partner is saying, because that is hurtful to the scene.

You also cannot just accept it either, because then your partner would be doing all the work.”

The Darwinians take their comedy seriously, often going to classes and festivals around the country to learn new techniques to share with their peers. Villalpando has even taken classes at Second City in Chicago, a premier comedy community that has trained stars like Steve Carell and Tina Fey. The Darwin Experience is not just a fun college experience. The skills its members learn can be implemented far away from the stage.

“It’s definitely something I keep on my resume,” said Dana Dobbins, a Darwin alumna who now attends law school. “It’s a conversation starter in all my interviews.”

Dobbins said the skills she picked up in the troupe have augmented her

interviewing ability significantly.

Villalpando and Hartnett, both planning to pursue comedy after college, agree with Dobbins’ sentiment.

“I feel really prepared going into comedy in [Los Angeles],” Villalpando said. “The ability to perform weekly and think on my toes has really helped me go further in comedy.”

The troupe is also looking to pick up some more members. It is holding auditions Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Complex, Room 266.

Everyone is encouraged to audition — no experience is necessary.

Hartnett says her ideal candidate is just someone who is having fun on stage and engaging with their peers.

“It has made my college experience,” Villalpando said. “I could have been uninvolved in everything else and just doing Darwin would have made my college experience wonderful.

People should audition even if they are scared to. Just take a risk because it will be awesome.”

The Charles Darwin Experience performs every Tuesday evening in the Gallagher Theater at 10 p.m.

t’s the weekend, which means it’s time to partake in the two most important food groups: alcohol and brunch. Luckily for us, Tucson has no shortage of places to drink and dine in the mornings. Whether you’re waking up with a hangover, with your hook up or with a Harry Styles body pillow, here are some places to brush off the sting and stench of last night.

Prep and Pastry

Prep and Pastry’s brunch has the classics like eggs and bacon and granola with yogurt, as well as regional specialities like biscuits and gravy and breakfast poutine. The best part is that it has four different kinds of french toast: classic, berry compote, s’mores and carrot cake. Though Prep and Pastry doesn’t serve

Wilko’s brunch menu has all the staples as well as an extensive drink menu for its weekend brunch at 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Its sophisticated fare has everything from croque madame to ricotta pancakes with lemon marmalade to salmon hash. It has several different variations on mimosas and sparkling, white, rose and red wines. If you’ve yet to check out this corner of University Boulevard, this weekend is your opportunity.

Hotel Congress’ Cup Café was voted one of the 10 best places in America to get brunch by Men’s Journal and for good reason. It’s open seven days a week, and the breakfast menu is available from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. There’s a

If you didn’t think there was a place for authentic French cuisine in Tucson, you were wrong. Ghini’s serves its French breakfast all day Saturday and Sunday, so you can chow down on any kind of crepe you can imagine, or try the eggs provencal. Ghini’s has an entire menu of “Recovery Beverages,” along with a plethora of bubbly and booze to get you through the morning.

Blue Willow

If you live in Tucson and haven’t had brunch at the Blue Willow, then have you really lived in Tucson? Blue Willow has the classic Southwestern brunch, with dishes like chorizo and eggs and huevos rancheros, along with to-die-for eggs benedict and 13 different kinds of omelettes. It has a specialty mimosa with grapefruit and prickly pear, or you can just get a small bottle of champagne. The best thing about this Tucson favorite is the kitsch gift shop at the front of the restaurant, which has every wacky and weird trinket imaginable.

Hiking trails to elevate your weekend Chelsea Cook

N

ow that the sun is finally coming out after a bit of winter weather, it is the perfect time to go out and explore Tucson. One of the best ways to get some exercise while adventuring is to hike, and luckily enough, Tucson is home to tons of hiking trails that are both diverse and beautiful.

Tumamoc Hill

The first hiking trail, and one of the closest to campus, is Tumamoc Hill. The path is completely paved all the way to the top of the hill, which makes it ideal for hikers of all levels.

Tumamoc is open all night, so hiking the trail at night or early morning is a perfect way to watch the sunset or sunrise.

Tumamoc Hill not only serves as a hiking trail but also as a research facility used to study ecology in the Southwest. The UA purchased more than 300 acres from the government in the ’60s, which it has since used for research and education.

The trail is open 24 hours during the weekend and open all weekdays except between the times of 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Sentinel Peak

One of the trails that is more widely recognized is Sentinel Peak, otherwise known as “A” Mountain. The trail provides an immaculate view of the city at all times of the day and allows hikers to get up close and personal with the “A.” The large “A” on the side of Sentinel Peak connects the entire city of Tucson with the UA ever since the “A” was painted on the mountain after a 1915 football victory. At certain times of the year — particularly during the week of the UA versus Arizona State University football game — everyone watches the “A” to wait and

see whether it will be painted by the Sun Devils or whether it will remain safe. The main trail on the peak is paved and goes up to almost the top of the mountain. Once the “A” is reached, there is also a small path that goes all the way up to the summit.

Seven Falls

When the weather starts to heat up — as it is now — people begin to search for ways to cool down. One of the best ways to exercise and get out of the heat at the same time is to hike Seven Falls. In order to reach the falls, hikers arrive at

Sabino Canyon and take the Bear Canyon Trail all the way down. The official Sabino Canyon website says “the trailhead is approximately [two] miles from the parking lot and it takes another 2.5 miles to reach Seven Falls.” This is one of the longer hikes in the area, as it is advised that it will take a minimum of three hours to complete the trail.

“The uniqueness of Sabino Canyon comes mostly from the lush trees and grasses that grow along the creek bed that contrast with the steep canyon walls and the desert terrain on either side of the canyon walls,” said Abbey Harman, an employee at Sabino Canyon.

Although it is a long hike, the trail passes over Sabino Creek multiple times and ends at Seven Falls, which gives hikers plenty of opportunities to get their feet — or their entire bodies — wet.

Tucson is full of different trails that fit the needs of every level of hiker, whether it is a casual walk up a paved road or crossing over a partially filled creek. Hiking gives everyone the chance to get outside and explore the city they live in, the parts that they may not see on an everyday basis. There are many places to hike in Tucson; you just have to go out and find them.

To commemorate the beginning of Super Bowl weekend, the cutest competitors stole the show at the opening day of the Arizona Humane Society’s Puppy Bowl XI in Phoenix. The puppies, which will all be available for adoption after their performance in the Puppy Bowl on Sunday, prepared for the game on their practice field at the Puppy Bowl Cafe. The 25 pups got good face time with the coaches and potential future owners, but most of their focus was on being extremely adorable.

Although a handful of high school and college bands had small contributions to the occasional halftime show since then, the true marching band performance has yet to grace the Super Bowl stage again. In today’s day and age, one or two popular musical acts take the stage for half an hour, giving a sort of miniature concert of all their songs that everyone heard on the radio earlier that day. From Michael Jackson to U2 to Katy Perry, the focus has been completely shifted in the last 20-plus years.

A lot has changed over the years when it comes to the Super Bowl halftime show, whether you favor the traditional marching band fare or the showy pop culture phenomenon it is today. There is one fact that is undeniable, however: The UA marching band will always hold a special place in halftime show history.

s the Western world enters its fourth-consecutive week of the new year, Eastern communities are beginning to gear up for the festivities. The Chinese New Year, a holiday steeped in tradition and folklore, will officially begin Feb. 19, but celebrations for the holiday will commence as early as this weekend. On Saturday, the Confucius Institute at the University of Arizona and the Tucson Chinese Cultural Center kick off the sixth-annual Chinese New Year Festival.

The event will tout a number of traditional Chinese arts, including a symphonic orchestra, Chinese soloists, a chorus and a Peking Opera.

“Through this event, we would like to share the Chinese culture,” said Wei Zhao, Chinese director at the CIUA. “We would like to introduce our customs to the local people through Chinese music, martial arts, dance and calligraphy.”

Artists from all reaches of the globe will be contributing to the event, and the Chandler Symphony Orchestra will also be in attendance to play such pieces as “The Blue Danube Waltz.”

The Chinese New Year is not a strictly Chinese celebration, said Larry Lang, artistic director of the CIUA and of the event. Though the holiday takes on the Chinese moniker, it is a holiday recognized throughout Asia.

“The Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese people, as well as some other Asian cultures, celebrate the Chinese New Year,” Lang said.

“It is also called Chun-Jie, which means Spring Festival, the first day of spring.”

The Chinese New Year marks the beginning of a new lunar calendar and therefore the commemoration of new beginnings. Families often spend this time of renewal together, participating in a multitude of festivities.

“People often travel many miles to return home for the holiday,” Chen said. “Usually families hang red symbols in their windows, clean their houses, children receive red envelopes with money and traditional dishes like fish and dumplings are served to welcome in the new year.”

As holidays go, the Lunar New Year is perhaps the most widely celebrated in Asiatic cultures.

“As a traditional holiday in China, the

Lunar New Year is the biggest event of the year,” Chen said. “It is a time of reunion, like Christmas or Thanksgiving here.”

The upcoming festival will couple fusions of East and West to showcase Chinese culture for all of Tucson.

“We have a lot of talented people for this event who want to share our traditions and culture,” Chen said. “This is our mission at the Confucius Institute — to help the local community learn about the Chinese.”

The annual extravaganza will be held in Centennial Hall at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Those in attendance will experience a taste of traditional Chinese culture and an early taste of the New Year, as a variety of nationalities come together to usher in the Year of the Sheep.

Tucson will be commencing many of its other Lunar New Year celebrations in the month to come. The Tucson Chinese Cultural Center launches a “Taste of China” Feb. 7, which will include Chinese arts and crafts, games, performances and food. Other celebrations put on by the TCCC include the Year of the Sheep fundraising banquet dinner on Feb. 14, which will be a casino night and dinner, including a silent auction and entertainment.

uper Bowl Sunday is on the doorstep, which means that if you’re planning on throwing a party, you are deep into preparation. Or you may feel more at home scrambling around frantically, after having saved it for the last minute. Either way, here are some staples that your gathering should have, whether you’re a Patriot, Seahawk or just looking to be the host/hostess with the most/mostess.

This is a surefire way to get everyone engaged, especially those who aren’t too familiar with the infinite intricacies of the NFL rulebook. If someone doesn’t know the difference between a safety and a safety, they can at least have fun guessing which company will have the first commercial of the game. Find a template on the Internet, or create your own.

If you want, this is a fun and innocent way to throw in a touch of gambling. Have everyone who wants to play throw in some money, and whoever gets the most categories correct wins the pot. Speaking of money and sports, here is the one of the more interesting prop bets for Sunday: The over/under for the running time for Idina Menzel’s performance of the national anthem is two minutes and 2.5 seconds.

It’s all good and fun to root for your team in the comfort of your own domain without any detractors hoping for the downfall of your beloved. However, having the enemy inside of your home base can spice things up in a good way. The most obvious benefit is that you can rib your friends when your team scores a touchdown or field goal. Be careful, though, as you’ll have the same treatment visited upon you should misfortune befall your team. Invite over some people who are good sports, strap up for a game that’s hopefully a nailbiter — unlike last year’s uncompetitive 43-8 final score — and embrace all that is football for the final time this season.

New bar offers spirited selection

ooking for a spot to kick back, relax and enjoy some high-end wines? A new shop recently opened on University Boulevard that will satisfy those needs — Bear Track U. Although the tasting room has been open for less than a month, it has already established itself in the Tucson community and even holds events — such as singles mixers — on a regular basis.

Rick Riddle, owner of Bear Track U, makes his wines in New Mexico and imports them here to sell in his unique tasting room.

“People not only get to enjoy the wine,” Riddle said, “but they also learn about how the wine is made through the stories I tell.”

The standout point of Bear Track U is that it places an emphasis on wine education. Lisette Lespron, manager at Bear Track U, said she believes one of the best parts of working there is the interaction with the customers.

“It’s much different than a typical bar,” Lespron said, “[where] they usually just hand you your drink, and that’s the end of the conversation. Here, we know about the product, and can give you the back story on where it came from, how it is made and what is used to make it.”

Lespron and Riddle said they are excited to begin holding wine education classes at Bear Track U in the near future, and that they are both fascinated with everything in the realm of wine.

Though Bear Track U has much of the same demographic as regular bars, the crowd there is tamer, and groups generally sit and drink wine while chatting for longer periods.

“We have a group of regulars who are in their 70s,” Lespron said, “but we also get students who have just turned 21 and love the tasting room.”

When Riddle decided to move his store into Main Gate Square, it had much to do with the fact that he would get a diverse group of customers — tourists from the neighboring Tucson Marriott University Park, professors from the UA and students going out on date nights.

“We are more boutique-ish than other tasting rooms around Tucson,” Riddle said. “We have food and wine that you can’t get anywhere else, because they are unique to my store.”

The menu at Bear Track U includes pages of wines — specialty, whites, reds, reserve and grand reserve — but there is also a list of beers, including many local options. When asked about their own personal favorite wine, Lespron and Riddle both spoke highly of the Refosco.

that they used to grow back in the old country,” Lespron said. “I think it’s one of the best wines we’ve made in a long time.”

Can you tell me a little bit of the history?

“We used to be on Sunrise and Swan. We were a taste room up there. We went under the name Bear Track Winery because we did a lot of our own blends. A lot of the wine in here is predominantly blends, but a lot of our wine is also pure varietals, which come from Ruidoso, New Mexico. … As of right now, we are just a taste room; we are not blending anything in the back because we are very sparse for space.”

You said there are two different kind of wines, the pure and the blended?

“It’s not pure. When we say ‘pure varietal,’ it’s just that grape. So, like this one is Refosco. We call it Refosco because it’s 75 percent of that grape. Generally, in order to qualify as a pure varietal, you have to be 75 percent of that pure grape. … A blend is anything, so you’ve got a 50 percent Chardonnay, and then we throw in 10 percent Viognier, and then the rest with Sauvignon Blanc. That

is a blend. … Usually, blends get a fancy name of some sort.”

How did you get into it?

“I took this as kind of a second job, just for fun, mainly.

I used to be an LPN, and I got really burned out on my work, and then I had my own company. I did in-home care, and then after awhile, like I said, I got super burned out. I decided to jump aboard here, and I study wine on my own. I’m studying to hopefully get my [sommelier certification] very soon.”

You said at the other location is where you actually had the room to actually make blends. Did you do that?

“I did, actually. I helped make a couple blends, some of the newer ones. When you blend wine, it’s just basic chemistry. … We still do make the mead. We actually just came out with two different types. We have a Bochet, which is a burnt mead. It’s burnt honey, where it actually goes in the barrel. … It is nicely burned, and it actually gives the mead a dark, caramel looking color to it. It’s very nice. And then we have a regular mead. We spliced it with some strawberry wine. … It gave a really good hint to the mead, so it’s a strawberry mead.”

Björk’s swan song to love Caren Badtke On her ninth and most personal studio album, Vulnicura, Icelandic avant-garde musician Björk reflects on the different stages of her breakup in an almost clinical approach. The album was rushreleased on Jan. 20 due to its leak on the internet on Jan. 18, just one week after the announcement of its initial release date in March.

The singer documents her

breakup with American artist Matthew Barney chronologically from the slowly creeping foreboding of nine months prior to slowly finding a new ground eleven months post-split. Asserting on her website how biological of a process a breakup is, Björk analyzes the growing distance between her and her lover in a sharp, bittersweet way through the use of lovely metaphors, sounds of nature and chamber pop.

Björk sings about her longing to be shown “emotional respect” and to finding a “mutual coordinate” with her lover in order to strengthen their relationship. It marks stage zero of their breakup, the beginning of rough waters.

In “Lionsong,” Björk wonders whether her lover will snap out of whatever is going through his head and whether their relationship can survive his emotional distance.

The theatrical song embeds a trip hop beat in a mass of strings.

“History of Touches” feels like a painful remembrance of Björk’s physical relationship with her lover.

Expressing her bitterness, Björk goes as far as dropping the f-word, a thing she rarely does.

According to the album’s booklet, “Black Lake” shows a wounded Björk two months after the breakup.

Her grief is apparent through changing dynamics and a changing pace. In this epic 10-minute

piece, she accuses her ex-lover of abandoning their daughter, who likely suffered from their breakup.

Björk’s hopelessness — “No hope in sight of ever recover/ Eternal pain and horrors” — marks the first stage after the breakup, the mourning of what they had. “Family” extends this motif. Björk mourns the end of their “triangle” of love. Though “Notget,” written 11 months after the breakup with Barney, shows Björk still wounded and lost, “Atom Dance” shows her slowly “dancing towards transformation” to the second stage: healing. The collaboration with transgender musician Antony Hegarty of Antony and the Johnsons revisits trip hop and offers stronger percussion.

“Mouth Mantra” shows Björk as stronger and less vulnerable. The track has a more aggressive pace and thicker vocals and has Björk reflecting the negative sides of her lost relationship. It slowly builds up and gets to epic heights at its climax.

Björk now refers to the relationship

in the past tense. Though the song was written back in 2011 during more hardships when Björk’s mother was in and out of hospitals, “Quicksand” closes the album by showing the musician gain a new perspective. She now feels that she has to be strong for her daughter, just like her mother had to be strong for her. “Every time you give up / You take away our future / and my continuity and my daughter’s.”

The rush-release of Vulnicura might have been an important step in Björk’s career. Though the book “Björk: Archives” and an upcoming exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art were supposed to accompany the release of the album, the rush-release let the light shine purely on the album.

The positive reception of the album by both critics and fans emphasizes that Vulnicura, with its hauntingly personal lyrics and unique concept, is able to stand for itself.

Nazi narrative chills readers to the bone Anna Mae Ludlum

H

er glowing green phosphorous button, worn to alert passersby of her presence in the mandatory blackout of Nazi Germany, alerted the infamous Berlin serial killer, whom Adolf Hitler feared would shatter German morale, that his next victim was alone.

There were no passersby. Her potential cries would be unheard. Shining a light into her eyes, now accustomed to the dark, disoriented and temporarily blinded her. He then stabbed the unsuspecting woman in the back four times.

She lived to tell her tale of surviving the S-Bahn serial killer.

Scott Andrew Selby’s, “A Serial Killer in Nazi Berlin: The Chilling True Story of The S-Bahn Murderer,” brings Germany’s legendary serial killer to worldwide attention in his thorough account of Paul Ogorzow’s 1939-1941 path, from verbally abusing women to his insatiable need to sexually assault and kill them.

Ogorzow was seen as the quiet blue-collar neighbor — he cared for his wife and children and worked for Berlin’s commuter train, the S-Bahn.

In reality, he beat his wife, kept mistresses and was a loyal sergeant in the Brownshirts, who delighted in frightening exhausted women walking home after midnight.

The reported crimes were closely guarded

from the public by Joseph Goebbels, the Nazi minister of propaganda. Fearing German soldiers would abandon the “Final Solution” to return home and protect their family, Goebbels squelched efforts to warn the women of Berlin.

Ogorzow’s quickly lost the original arousing effect of frightening women in the dark. His methods become more calculated, more frequent and more brazen. Ogorzow killed one woman in her kitchen as her children slept in the living room and one survivor was stabbed in the neck on the doorstep of her parents’ home.

When scaring and beating women no longer gave Ogorzow the same high, he found another means to experience his original feeling. During each sexual attack and through ridding the body from a moving train, he felt empowered, but — like a junky — the high rarely lasted long. He was constantly on the watch for petite women he could overpower.

Selby’s conservative descriptions of the attacks based on investigation reports and personal accounts convey the gravity of Ogorzow’s crimes without exploiting the victims further under the guise of “historical accuracy.”

Unnecessarily graphic accounts of assault in historical nonfiction tend to be used for dramatic entertainment purposes when the true terror of another’s assault can’t be properly understood.

Selby removes the predilection to denounce the severity of assaults because the women

attacked were the German equivalent to America’s “Rosie the Riveter.” The majority of the women he attacked worked in factories, so capable men could fight in the war.

It was a risky choice that paid off — to demand readers empathize for Nazi sympathizers — proving any attack of a person considered a lesser being can’t be justified.

The police were mostly Nazis searching for reasons to pin the crimes on possible Jewish citizens breaking their ghetto’s curfew. Each step to prove “the lesser humans” were responsible was unequivocally disproven.

Wilhelm Karl Lüdtke, police commissioner of the Serious Crimes Unit, was the moral detective investigating the homicides. Lüdtke is the unsung hero, having risked his life and career defending minorities, opposing Nazism and communism, and was eventually hired as a double agent for the CIA. Ludtke’s persistence in finding the S-Bahn murderer simultaneously brought Nazi ideology into question as it became apparent that the crimes were committed by someone of the “superior race.”

The riveting cat-and-mouse game between Lüdtke and Ogorzow is truly spellbinding, shifting from moving trains to gardens and to Ogorzow’s interrogations. The epilogue wraps up the story of each character brought back to life by Selby.

Selby’s matter-of-fact writing is compelling, breezy and fact-heavy. He doesn’t linger on setting the scene. He thrusts the reader into the action, inserts forensic insight, provides closure when able and introduces Lüdtke, a hero ready for his overdue spotlight.

OUR SIGHT The new astronomy exhibit at the Center for Creative Photography showcases the celestial bodies and stars of the galaxy Victoria Pereira

uter space is in the spotlight in the Center for Creative Photography’s newest exhibition, “Astronomical: Photographs of Our Solar System and Beyond.”

The gallery, which opens Saturday, stems from numerous collections.

There are pieces owned by university departments and others on loan from private collectors willing to showcase their treasures. Organizations including the Space Imagery Center, Special Collections at the University of Arizona, the AnamorFose Photo Gallery in Belgium and private collector contributed photography. The exhibition is a mix of subject matter, time periods and artists.

Photography has been closely intertwined with astronomy since its inception. For years, astronomers had been observing the sky through telescopes and transcribing what they witnessed through drawings or notes.

However, this system was far from ideal.

Precise measurements were nearly impossible to make and the process was tedious and difficult. Then came photography.

“Photography and astronomy have had this symbiotic relationship since the introduction of photography,” said Joshua Chuang, the curator of the exhibit. “When photography was invented, it kicked astronomy into high gear.”

With the invention of the camera, the field of astronomy changed forever.

Suddenly, astronomers could take pictures of their observations that were more accurate and detailed.

The photographs could be taken over periods of time to record minute

changes unseen by the human eye. They were astronomers’ permanent records of the night sky.

The advent of photography pushed astronomy to a new level. From that moment on, the two built off of each other, melding scientific observation with art. For decades, astronomers pushed inventors to create more advanced cameras that would allow them to take better photographs and make more precise observations.

“It was astronomers who were the first to really push for digital photography,” said Thomas Fleming, astronomer and senior lecturer at the UA. “Until we developed things like X-ray and radio astronomy, … astronomy was photography.”

The magnitude of this merger and the incredulity of the results it produced changed the way people understood the universe. “Astronomical” intends to capture this by displaying astronomical photography from over the years.

“Astronomical” begins with an introduction into early astronomical photography with a sequence of pictures titled “Photographische Sternkarten,” which translates into “photographic star maps.” The photos, taken by astronomers Johann Palisa and Max Wolf, observed a small quadrant of the night sky and the ways in which it changed over the course of several years in the first decade of the twentieth century. The photo progression spans an entire wall and is intended to be the first thing visitors see when entering the exhibit. The photos were taken in negative and reveal striking phenomena occurring in the universe around us.

Each of the three subsequent rooms of the gallery take on a specific theme, the first being the moon. From the very first photograph, taken of our celestial neighbor in the late 1800s, to pictures

from the various Apollo missions, including the first image of earth-rise from the surface of the moon, this room, the largest of the gallery, is rich with history.

“This is really where the UA comes into play,” Chuang said.

The university has a long history with astronomy and the exploration of outer space and has contributed to some incredible astronomical feats. Since the department’s origins in 1922, serious research and observation of the cosmos has been a staple of the program.

The UA amped up its involvement in lunar research and observation after Gerard Kuiper, the famous NASA astronomer, created the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory as a separate department. Kuiper’s work was integral not only to his program here at the university but to the entire astronomical field. Much of his work will be on display at “Astronomical.”

The next room is dedicated to the rest of the planets in the solar system.

From Mercury to Neptune, photos of the planets taken during missions or by telescopic means display the contents of our cosmic neighborhood.

Photographs from missions that the UA participated in are also on display, along with a prototype of the camera currently orbiting Mars for the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment mission and photographs from it.

The final room will be occupied by a projection of the sun, which will be shown as the closing piece of the show.

The exhibit will be open for the rest of the semester and is free to all visitors.

Senior singer worships the music Madison Scavarda

E

very Friday around 7 p.m., UA students can hear Caroline Crawford, a music senior, singing on the worship team for the on-campus Christian organization called The Navigators. But her involvement as a singer on the UA campus does not stop there. Crawford is a part of the Arizona Choir and is also involved in the UA Opera Theater and the Opera Scenes program.

Coming from a musically oriented family, Crawford learned the value of classical music from a very young age.

“My mom is a violinist and all my siblings play an instrument in a proficient way,” Crawford said.

Crawford started out on the violin before focusing her attention on singing. She had her first voice experiences at church in the seventh grade. Her passion for the art began to kindle when she joined the mariachi at her high school and felt invigorated by the ensemble’s true sense of vulnerability.

Crawford said she feels a similar appreciation toward classical music and opera, which her first voice teacher in high school introduced her to. After hearing exceptional reviews about Kristin Dauphinais, who is now her private voice professor and chair of the voice area at the School of Music, Crawford chose the UA to pursue a bachelor’s degree in music with an emphasis in vocal performance, but above all, to invest in what she is truly passionate about.

During her freshman and sophomore years, Caroline Crawford sang in the Symphonic Choir, an ensemble composed of mostly undergraduates. However, as a junior with exceptional talent, Crawford is now in the Arizona Choir, which is comprised of nearly all graduate students.

Under the instruction of conductors Bruce Chamberlain and Elizabeth Schauer, Crawford said she has had the opportunity to sing scores from a wide variety of music generations, ranging from the 17th to the 20th century. In May, the choir ventured beyond the Tucson city limits to Austria and the Czech Republic where they sang Antonín Dvorák’s “Stabat Mater” in the midst of exquisite European halls.

During Christmas time, the UA choirs also put on a concert called the “Holiday Card to Tucson,” which is performed at St. Augustine Cathedral.

Crawford said she cherishes this special event as part of her Christmas traditions. Moreover, she said she values how Tucson residents unite to celebrate music and Christmas.

“Being in choir here has really opened my eyes to the value and beauty of choral singing,” Crawford said.

In addition to singing in UA choirs, Crawford said she is also involved in Opera Theater and the Opera Scenes program where she has gotten to play a number of different roles, including Mabel in “The Pirates of Penzance,” Ida in “Die Fledermaus,” Second Lady in “The Magic Flute” and Madame Herz in “The Impresario.” This semester, Crawford said she is getting ready to take on the lead role of Laetitia in UA Opera Theater’s rendition of “The Old Maid and the Thief,” by Gian Carlo Menotti.

“Caroline Crawford is one of our first-rate sopranos here at the School of Music,” said David Ward, interim director for the UA Opera Theater. “She is an excellent actress and a very funny comedienne. Her performances are always captivating.”

Crawford said she enjoys working with many of her classmates who are also in Opera Theater and Opera Scenes with her.

“Once we’re in the opera rehearsal setting, it ceases to be about competition and becomes about the art itself,” Crawford said.

Crawford has also partaken in a plethora of singing competitions. Recently, Crawford attained first place in the Amelia Rieman Opera Competition which, according to the School of Music’s website, is put forth by the Opera Theater.

Crawford said she does not have specific plans for the future but that she trusts in God’s plan which he will reveal to her in his time. She also said she has considered doing missionary work or going to graduate school.

“God is my number one inspiration for singing,” Crawford said. “My gift is from him, which is why I feel the duty to share it. It’s not mine to have — it’s his to give. Besides opera, I love singing worship for The Navigators and church services. I can’t take credit for any of it really. I also [think] music is a precious gift God has given us to express our love and worship for him.”

‘Cats look for revenge against Beavers

They wouldn’t explicitly tell you even if you asked, but the No. 6 Arizona men’s basketball team is looking forward to a revenge game against Oregon State on Friday in McKale Center.

In a game that received plenty of national attention, the Beavers took down the Wildcats 58-56 in Corvallis, Ore., on Jan. 11 in the first matchup between the two teams.

Since that point, Arizona (19-2, 7-1 Pac-12 Conference) has gone on a five-game winning streak and defeated teams by an average of 19.2 points per game. Just one of those five teams, Stanford, scored above 56 points.

Offensively, Arizona put up games of 89 and 90 points and has seemed like a more complete team.

Against Oregon on Wednesday, six Wildcats scored in double figures and the UA won by 34 points.

“That kind of just shows that we can have those kind of nights on any given night,” UA guard T.J. McConnell said. “That four or five guys scoring in double figures … shows how lethal we can really be.”

McConnell has been a driving force behind the recent offensive overhaul for the Wildcats. The senior has taken up a bigger offensive role as of late, but hasn’t really seen that show up on the stat sheet.

He’s averaging 10 points per game over the five-game winning streak, a stat that doesn’t jump off the page. It’s how he’s getting his points that make his production so valuable. McConnell has taken up a take-what-the-defensegives-him attitude and has begun to take over games when he sees fit.

If the team is struggling to score for a stretch of time, McConnell has been adjusting his mindset accordingly and be more aggressive. On the flip side, McConnell is just as comfortable, if not even more, deferring to teammates and racking up assists instead of points.

As Arizona head coach Sean Miller puts it, McConnell is exactly the kind of leader the Wildcats need.

“He’s the one guy that I always know is never looking up there at the scoreboard to see how

many points he has,” Miller said. “He doesn’t care. He’s the consummate playmaker, leader [and] winner. He’s our team’s heart and soul.”

In the first matchup against Oregon State, McConnell was one of just two Wildcats to score in double figures. Miller and company will need much more to take down the Beavers this goaround.

Stanley Johnson, Brandon Ashley and Kaleb Tarczewski combined for just 16 points in the debacle that was the first game. It’s unlikely those three will combine for so few points again.

Johnson in particular has been on a tear and could easily exceed 16

points by himself — something the freshman phenom has done with regularity this season.

Against Oregon State’s slow tempo and matchup zone, Johnson, among others, should have plenty of opportunities to open up the game via the 3-ball.

As a team, Arizona is shooting 36.3 percent from behind the arc on the season but shot just 23.5 percent against the Beavers.

According to Miller, OSU’s matchup zone creates problems but can be countered with fluid ball movement from side to side.

“Once in a while, the way the game goes not just for our team but just generally, you see that player pass fake to the open man

as if he’s going to be more open,” Miller said. “I mean he’s open, pass it to him. Get rid of the ball.

This is a two-game Segway where we have to move the [ball]. We have to move it, we have to take care of it, we have to have great teamwork to create good shots.”

From Oregon State’s perspective, Gary Payton II will be the driving force to securing an even bigger upset over Arizona on Friday. Payton, son of legendary NBA player Gary Payton, put up an across the board performance against the Wildcats by registering 10 points, nine rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block during the first matchup.

Payton provided the offensive and defensive toughness that his father so often did during his tenure at Oregon State and in the NBA after that. Containing his allaround ability to control the game should be the top priority for Miller’s defensive gameplan, not only for the simple fact that he’s Oregon State’s best player, but also because the Beavers aren’t nearly as deep as one might think.

When the ball tips Friday night, one thing is clear: Arizona will be ready for this revenge game.

PATRIOTS VS. SEAHAWKS

I

t’s the heavy-weight Super Bowl matchup that the NFL surely wanted since the beginning of the season. It’s New England vs. Seattle. It’s the spoiled Patriots vs. the loudmouth Seahawks. And it’s one of the most talked about Super Bowl matchups in recent memory.

On one side, Seattle is looking to validate its run of dominance with a second-straight Super Bowl victory.

The Seahawks handily took down the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII and made the venerable Peyton Manning look abnormally human.

Behind a stingy, in-your-face defense that isn’t afraid to hit you and let you know about it after, Seattle is deadly. The “Legion of Boom” consisting of Richard Sherman, Kam Chancellor, Earl Thomas and Byron Maxwell may get all the publicity, but guys like Bobby Wagner, Michael Bennett, Cliff Avril and K.J. Wright make this defense complete.

Add in a run-dominant offense led by Marshawn Lynch and Russell Wilson and Seattle comes into this game built more like an NFL team of yester-year, rather than the pass-heavy offenses of today.

On the other side are the often-despised New England Patriots and the luckiest man in the country: Tom Brady.

Brady is the person every guy wishes they could be and the guy every girl wishes they could be with. A former sixth rounder, Brady has put in a Hall of Fame career, married a gorgeous supermodel and has turned around the New England franchise with the help of Bill Belichick.

Belichick, who is the Gregg Popovich of the NFL, has taken the team to Super Bowl after Super Bowl after Super Bowl in his tenure in New England.

Put all that talent into perspective and Super Bowl XLIX has all the makings of an instant classic.

As the ball kicks off on Sunday, keep on eye on Brady’s willingness to challenge the Legion of Boom. With a weapon at tight end like former Arizona Wildcat Rob Gronkowski, the Patriots are sure to try the deep ball at least a couple times.

However, don’t be surprised to see Lynch and NE running back LeGarette Blount dominate the game with their smashmouth running styles.

It may not be popular opinion, but when the dust settles and the confetti falls, the Patriots will come out on top behind an opportunistic defense and steady offense.

W

hen the clock strikes down to 0:00 in the midst of Super Bowl XLIX, the Seattle Seahawks will walk away victorious. The Seahawks continue to find improbable ways to win, just look at the NFC Championship Game against the Green Bay Packers.

Entering the fourth quarter, the Seahawks were down by 12 points and the Packers appeared to have clinched the victory. That is until Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch went beast mode on the Packers defense with a 24-yard touchdown and quarterback Russell Wilson regained his groove with a 1-yard run. How can a quarterback throw four interceptions and then still be the game hero? Well, Wilson managed to do just that with a 35-yard bomb to wide receiver Jermaine Kearse in overtime.

Somehow, someway, the Seahawks find a way to win, which is exactly what they will need to stop Tom Brady and the Patriots in Glendale, Ariz. The Seahawks will enter the upcoming game with confidence, unlike the Patriots, who will most likely still be embarrassed from their “DeflateGate” scandal just a few weeks back.

Both teams have experience and should know what to expect.

The Patriots are 3-4 all-time in the Super Bowl, whereas the Seahawks are 1-1.

The Seahawks do have one thing going for them: their running attack. The Seahawks have run for more yards than any other NFL team with 2,762 yards and 20 touchdowns. The Patriots rank ninth in the league in rushing defense, but stopping Lynch might just be too tough.

But everybody knows the key matchup for this game will be Brady versus the “Legion of Boom.” The Seahawks rank first in the league with 4,274 net total yards allowed. But against Brady, anything is possible. The Patriots quarterback has thrown for 4,109 yards this season alone and 33 touchdowns.

Bottom line: This game is going to be close, which is what every Super Bowl should be. Plus, this game has the NFL’s best celebrities going head to head.

The Seahawks are going to win, just because this is the same team that managed to crush the Broncos last season. Wilson will come out gunslinging and Lynch will do his breaking tackles thing. Don’t be surprised if Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman pulls the same stunt as he did last season in his postgame interview as the Seahawks ride their way to glory.

Arizona looks to build a winning streak

Coming off its first Pac-12 Conference win of the season, Arizona women’s basketball will try to keep the momentum going when the team travels to take on Utah and Colorado this weekend.

The Wildcats finally ended their skid this past Sunday by defeating Oregon at home. It took an overtime period, but Arizona made enough key shots, topped off by Charise Holloway’s game-winning 3-pointer.

“It’s always really good to see your team fight together down the stretch,” Arizona guard Candice Warthen said.

Now 1-7 in the conference, Arizona has a good chance to improve that record as the Utes and Buffs have struggled just as much thus far in conference play.

On Friday night, the Wildcats go to Salt Lake City to face a Utah team still in search of its own breakthrough win. The Utes sit dead-last in the conference with a 0-8 record, with four of the losses coming by double digits. Utah’s last win at the Huntsman Center came in late December against Charlotte.

Then, in a late Sunday morning matchup, Arizona treks to Boulder, Colo., to play the Buffs. Colorado currently sits at 2-6 in the conference, with its only wins coming against Utah.

If the UA can continue to get strong performances from Warthen and forward LaBrittney Jones, Niya Butts’ team should be in good shape.

The two combined for 20 rebounds and over half of the Wildcats’ points in the Oregon win, with Jones posting the best stat line of her career — a 30-point, nine-rebound performance.

Ten of those points came from the free-throw line, a result of

Jones and her teammates being more aggressive in attacking the paint and drawing contact.

“We’ve got to continue to get to the line, continue to put people in foul trouble,” Butts said. “If we can do that and continue to get offensive rebounds, I like our chances.”

For Warthen, the outing moved her career point total to 997, just three points shy of the 1,000-mark plateau. The senior point guard recently moved to 18th on the UA’s all-time scoring list.

“I didn’t know she was three points away [from 1,000]” Butts said. “We’ll make sure to post her up in the next game and try to get her a quick two points there. She has battled through some things injury-wise, and the fact that she continues to go and works as hard as she works is amazing.”

Outside of scoring, Warthen and the Wildcats have also done a better job of taking care of the ball. Turnovers constantly plagued the team in the early going of conference play but, as of late, have not been a major issue.

Going up against two opponents that have faced their own struggles offensively, Arizona can win if it plays smart, efficient basketball.

Offensively, that means staying aggressive outside and not settling for contested looks. Defensively, it must stay on perimeter shooters, as the UA has allowed its past couple opponents to take an abundance of open shots from outside.

If the Wildcats can do that and continue to receive solid performances from Warthen and Jones in particular, they should find themselves in a position to win both games.

The most incredible fact of the game is that Jones came off the bench and played just 25 minutes. If Jones can continue to provide high scoring for the Wildcats off the bench, maybe this team can start to win more against Pac-12 Conference opponents.

Arizona football The Wildcats have added 10 players to their January enrollee group and are off to a decent start in their spring season. Junior receiver Samajie Grant tweeted, “The progression my teamates (sic) are showing on and off the field makes me wayyyyy too anxious for [the] season!” Coming off two disappointing losses at the end of their season, these Wildcats are approaching the 2015 season with vengeance.

Arizona women’s tennis Coming off a 7-0 victory against New Mexico State in their first home match of the season, the Wildcats are off to a positive start. They are now ranked No. 34 in the nation and will look to use their winning momentum against NAU and No. 51 Houston.

Marshawn Lynch Any time an athlete starts a press conference with “you know why I’m here,” it is usually not a good thing. The star running back from the Seattle Seahawks has only increased his media presence through his sparse words. There is no doubt that Lynch will make an impact during the Super Bowl, but at the moment, he continues to draw negative media attention.

Los Angeles Lakers The Lakers will be without NBA star Kobe Bryant, who is out for the next nine months to repair a torn rotator cuff, essentially ruining the rest of their season. They are fifth in the Pacific Division and have a measly record of 12-34. The rest of their season will get ugly fast.

Robert Upshaw The Washington Huskies junior 7-foot center was kicked off the team on Monday for violating team rules. Upshaw had been previously kicked off the Fresno State Bulldogs. Sources from ESPN said that he has “failed multiple drug tests while at both schools.” The Huskies will miss Upshaw’s presence for the rest of the season.

Keys to victory in Super Bowl XLIX

Super Bowl XLIX features the New England Patriots against the Seattle Seahawks in Glendale, Ariz., on Sunday. The Patriots made their way to the big game by defeating the Baltimore Ravens 35-31 in the second round of the playoffs and then the Indianapolis Colts 45-7 in the AFC Championship Game. The Seahawks earned a victory over the Carolina Panthers 31-17 in the second round and then defeated the Green Bay Packers in a wild NFC Championship Game in overtime.

Keys to the Game Get running backs going early Patriots quarterback Tom Brady will always be an aerial threat, but if LeGarrette Blount can start off fast with his downhill running attack, the Patriots will have multiple options against the Seahawks. Plus, Blount has rushed for three touchdowns in the 20142015 postseason alone. On the other side is Marshawn Lynch, one of the best running backs in the NFL. He averages 5.5 yards per rush and can change the game in a heartbeat.

If both teams get their rushing attacks going, this should be a physical game.

Keep Wilson in the Pocket Russell Wilson is a solid quarterback and one that I would have no problem leading my team if I were an NFL coach in the final two minutes of the Super Bowl. But against the Packers, Wilson struggled throwing four interceptions.

In the Super Bowl, that would be a huge no-no.

Wilson loves running and can make opposing defenses cringe when he takes off. But in this postseason alone, he has been sacked seven times and has completed only 56.9 percent of his passes to Brady’s 65.9 percent. If the Patriots defense can come up with some big defensive stops and keep Wilson in the pocket, this game could lean in New England’s favor.

Turnovers, Turnovers, Turnovers If Wilson has another bad game like he did against the Packers in the NFC Championship Game, this game might not go the way many are expecting. Both defenses have combined for 11 turnovers in the postseason alone, which could make this a very back-and-forth effort. A turnover here or a turnover there could be the deciding factor in who wins Super Bowl XLIX.

Key Matchup of the Game Rob Gronkowski versus The Legion of Boom So far this postseason, the New England tight end has made a valiant effort to lead his team to Super Bowl XLIX. He has 10 catches for 136 yards and two touchdowns. Gronk is one of the most dangerous red zone threats in the game today. The former Arizona Wildcat is a ridiculous athlete, standing at 6-foot-6 and 265 pounds. Many analysts predict Seahawks 6-foot-3 safety Kam Chancellor to cover

By Mike Chesnick In his travels to different schools, Jason Tolliver has seen some impressive student centers. But none can match the unique design, he says, of the University of Arizona’s Student Union Memorial Center.

Through its architecture and artifacts, the union’s building honors the USS Arizona and the 1,177 sailors and marines who died when the battleship sank on Dec. 7, 1941, during the Japanese surprise attack of Pearl Harbor.

“We model our program and our focus after the USS Arizona,” says Tolliver, director of Arizona Student Unions, who came to UA nearly two years ago from LSU. “Our military ties make the union a very unique place.

In terms of history, there are only two bells left from the USS Arizona, one in Pearl Harbor and one here.”

Looking north from the UA Mall, the union’s clock tower houses the famous bell, and a large metal sculpture in front of the tower resembles a mast and sail.

The bell is rung seven times on the third Wednesday of every month at 12:07 p.m. to honor the fallen and UA achievements. By tradition, it is also rung by the Wildcat Events Board president on the Sunday before Pearl Harbor Day, on the Student Union’s birthday (Nov. 18) and after Wildcat athletic victories (over any team except Arizona schools).

The structure of the union represents the battleship, with the bow on the south end and stern on the north end. “The Canyon,” an outdoor walkway between the east and west sides of the building, includes a massive circular stairway intended to mimic the shape of the USS Arizona’s main

Paying tribute to the battleship’s fallen, UA’s Student Union bustles with eateries, lounges and activities gun turret. In this rotunda, water runs to fountain pools, intended to subtly remind people of the waters covering the ship, and anchor chains and rusting steel plates add to the abstract design of the ship’s hull.

“My favorite place is down in the rotunda,” Tolliver says. “I fancy myself a singer, without being a singer, and I love the acoustics. You can go down there and start bellowing out songs.”

The east wall of “The Canyon” is curved to replicate a silhouette of the ship — and the colors and rocks that make up the wall represent the layers of Arizona’s canyons. North of the canyon, in a traffic circle, stands an 18-foot ship’s mast sculpture by Susan Gamble. Hanging from the diamond-shape Gods’ Eye are 1,177 dog tags with the names of the fallen men. Tags of the 334 survivors hang above the tiled portion of the mast.

Southeast of the rotunda, on the union’s main level 2, is the USS Arizona Lounge, filled with photographs, uniforms and other artifacts from the ship. Heavy brass doors from the Union's original facility built in 1951 serve as the entryways to the lounge, where students can study and visitors can put on headsets and view several video interviews with men who survived the attack.

One man on the video, Donald Stratton, is among nine Pearl Harbor survivors still alive today. Now 92, he tells how a fireball engulfed the crew, “burning us real bad,” before he and five other sailors were thrown a rope and muscled their way, hand over hand, about 100 feet over fiery waters to safety.

The lounge was dedicated in early 2003, part of the grand opening of the “new” Student Union. Some exhibits are from the old Union, which UA tore down in a $60 million reconstruction project that began in 1999.

At the dedication, attended by Navy veterans, Capt. William Christman of the U.S. Navy ROTC spoke of the “long and deep relationship” between “a great ship and a great university,” and how the American people should never forget Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona.

“Frankly, it’s a story we don’t tell enough,” echoes Tolliver.
