The College Republican National Committee released an advertisement on Oct. 1 promoting Rick Scott, a Republican candidate running for governor in Florida, which created a spat among the UA College Republicans and the UA Young Democrats on its appropriateness. The ad released by the CRNC was a play off of the popular show “Say Yes To The Dress.” In the ad, a woman who had recently graduated college picked a candidate as if she were looking for a wedding dress. The ad used items like shawls and other accessories to depict tax rates and policies. After the CRNC released its ad, the Democratic National Committee sent it a letter thanking it for “spending $1 million to show America just how out of touch Republicans are with young

ASSISTANT CHIEF of Police W. Keith Brittain answers questions regarding sexual assaults at the University of Arizona Police Department on Wednesday. ASUA is utilizing a new nationwide program “It’s On Us” to decrease the amount of sexual assaults on campus.

Following the release of the 2014 UA campus safety report, the term red zone and its application has been brought into question at the UA, and officials are taking new steps to address the issue. Megan McKendry, violence prevention specialist at the Oasis Program at Campus Health Services, said the existence of a red zone — a period of time where sexual assault is thought to be more common — on the UA campus and its time frame is contested. McKendry said the red zone does not necessarily correlate with the first six weeks of school. While there may be some association with the first six weeks of school, McKendry said the red zone may actually be longer than just six weeks. According to McKendry, red zone times can vary depending on the college campus and the time of year, adding that the risk of sexual assault may increase when more students are out socializing and consuming more alcohol. According to the 2014 Annual Campus Safety, Security and Fire Safety report, released on Sept. 30, sexual assaults on campus have risen from four in 2011 to 19 in 2012 and to 28 in 2013. “We have statistics from studies that were done across the country that show us that a lot more than 20 sexual assaults happen per year on college campuses nationwide and communities,”

ISSAC ORTEGA, Associated Students of the University of Arizona president, speaks about the “It’s On Us” initiative during the ASUA Senate meeting on Wednesday at the Student Union Memorial Center. “It’s On Us” is a national initiative that over 200 colleges are involved in to address campus sexual assault

ASUA senators discussed racial sensitivity, updates on the veterinary school and changes to online classes Wednesday at their senate meeting. Associated Students of the University of Arizona Sen. Brooke Serack said she has been working on her platform to increase diversity with a focus on Greek Life. She said she did research on successful programs that focus on diversity at other universities and found that the University of Pennsylvania has an organization called Campus Organized Lectures on Racial Sensitivity, which was founded by greeks three years ago. Serack said she hopes to

adopt a similar policy for Greek Life at the UA. “[University of Pennsylvania’s Greek Life] actually had a very bad incident where they apparently hired black female strippers for a rush party, which is so unfortunate,” Serack said. “Across this country, race can still be a very serious issue.” According to Serack, the University of Pennsylvania organization puts on skits concerning institutional racism on campus and also has a variety show where students can initiate and direct the conversation about the lack of diversity that can exist in Greek Life. “I’m really interested in trying to find maybe some type of organization or something that can be founded to really help increase racial
