ASUA increases club funding BY ALYSSA SCHLITZER The Daily Wildcat

ASUA is changing its fundallocating processes for clubs after having trouble ensuring all money for clubs was allocated, and is on track to do that by the end of the year. Jordan Allison, the executive vice president of the Associated

Students of the University of Arizona, said over the years ASUA has been able to increase club funding from $225,000 to $250,000, allowing more opportunities for student organizations to achieve their goals. ASUA club funding allows different clubs to reach their goals and creates opportunities

for them that they would not be able to have otherwise. Clubs can get money for events, T-shirts, competitions, equipment, renting rooms and anything else they need that will benefit them and increase their success. A lot of the money given is for travel, so when clubs go on trips, they will be reimbursed for the

event when they come back. ASUA allocated over $250,000 to clubs and organizations this year and it boasts over 550 student clubs on campus, ranging from Greek organizations to the UA Harry Potter Alliance. Clubs can get money for what they need by filling out a form,

rizona’s first game of the 2014 EA Sports Maui Invitational started out almost identically to the first three games of the season. The Wildcats (4-0) trailed early against the Missouri Tigers before Rondae Hollis-Jefferson sparked a run —

something the forward has done all year — that led to a 72-53 Arizona victory. Missouri led 5-0 about two minutes in before UA head coach Sean Miller subbed in Hollis-Jefferson at the 17:21 mark, changing the landscape of the game. With Hollis-Jefferson on the court, the Wildcats went on a 14-4 run and took control of the driver’s seat. The rest of the first half was back and forth with the Arizona defense coming alive toward the end. The Wildcats forced nine first-

half turnovers, scoring 10 points off turnovers in the half. Arizona recorded seven steals in the first half alone. Leading the way in the first half with 10 points was forward Brandon Ashley, who was playing in his first road action since his Feb. 1 foot injury at California. Ashley played just 13 minutes in the half but was a reliable 4-7 from the field. Ashley finished the game tied with a team-high 15 points on an efficient 5-9 shooting from the field.

St. Louis County prosecuting attorney Robert McCulloch announced Monday evening that police officer Darren Wilson, who shot and killed Michael Brown, leading to a series of protests in Ferguson, Mo., was not going to be charged with the murder of Brown. CNN broadcast the announcement that the grand jury decided not to indict Wilson due to a lack of probable cause. During the press conference, McCulloch gave detailed accounts of what occurred prior to and during the shooting and a summary of the information presented to the grand jury. McCulloch said the grand jury concluded there was no probable cause to indict the officer after weighing the evidence and testimony. McCulloch also said an issue during the case was a series of false testimonies, and that several witness accounts all had different claims on where Brown’s hands were during the shooting. “The duty of the grand jury is to separate fact from fiction,” McCulloch said in the televised press conference. McCulloch also said that prior to receiving the autopsy reports, the grand jury heard from witnesses. CNN reported that the office of the prosecuting attorney in St. Louis County sent out a statement early Monday afternoon that said the grand jury had made a decision and that it was going to be announced later that day. Media outlets were then told that the announcement would take place at 8 p.m. central time. Throughout the evening, individuals continued to question why the announcement was being pushed into the evening. The office of African American Student Affairs was holding its Diaspora Dinner the evening that the announcement was made. Matice Moore, the program director for AASA, informed everyone in attendance that the decision was going to be announced during the event. Moore informed the attendees of the event that prior to beginning the evening, they would watch a video with statements from

UAMC receives average grade BY CRYSTAL BEDOYA

The Daily Wildcat The University of Arizona Medical Center received a “C” rating by The Leapfrog Group and has since taken measures to improve its performance for the community. The Leapfrog Group is a national independent nonprofit organization which compares hospitals’ quality, safety and efficiency standards, according to the Leapfrog website. A biannual report is provided to those who purchase a membership and are able to provide input about any hospital that forms a part of the

survey. The grades are based on measures of safety, quality and resource usage that are of interest to healthcare purchasers and consumers. As a nationally recognized and standardized survey, The Leapfrog Group attempts to capture any medical errors performed at hospitals, such as UAMC, to reduce any issues that reflect negatively toward the hospital in the future. Although the Leapfrog survey might be conducted by a thirdparty observer, the hospital makes a note that there are other sources to refer to when it comes to the business’ performance. “We don’t participate [with the Leapfrog survey so] we actually

don’t look at that rating,” said Dr. Andreas Theodorou, chief of staff at UAMC. “We don’t fill out a questionnaire [through them].” UUAMC prefers to consult the University HealthSystem Consortium, since it compares it across academic medical

centers, which are very different from regular hospitals, according to Brett Behan, co-director of quality for UAMC. According to the UHC website, the organization also focuses on the same goal as Leapfrog:
