Band gives free concert for music video

n an effort to gather extras for their music video shoot, the Sun Bones, a local indie band, are taking over the streets of downtown Tucson to stage a free outdoor concert on Sunday afternoon.

The concert will feature the Sun Bones, with Adara Rae and the Homewreckers as the opening act, and is taking place at the intersection of Church Avenue and Pennington Street. Immediately after the concert, fans will be asked to partake in the shooting of a scene for the music video to the Sun Bones’ original song “You’re Gonna Die!” “There’s intersecting storylines,” Sun Bones bassist Bob Hanshaw said. “One is a postapocalyptic world … and the other is about a business man who’s having a terrible day.”

The post-apocalyptic storyline features a demonic priest who preaches about the inevitability of death, and in the adjacent story, a businessman meets a bar patron who has the same message. The two storylines converge when the businessman and a crowd of lookalikes meet the priest and his entourage of doomsday survivors in downtown.

Although the title and lyrics could be misleading, Hanshaw described the song as being one of the group’s most pop-sounding to date. The music video is being directed by Charles Alfred Brown, an experienced director who created a number of music videos in the 1980s and has since been involved in Tucson’s art community. Brown first heard the song and immediately wanted to create a music video for it, so he and the Sun Bones began collaborating.

Those in the group consider themselves to be an indie “chamber punk” band, according to their official website, but their current group and sound hasn’t always been this way. The band has gone through different genres of music, band members and names over the past several years and has only recently gained some popularity with their current name.

Besides Hanshaw, Sun Bones includes Sam Golden, Seth Vietti and Laura Kepner-Adney.

Brown and the Sun Bones have been working to take their idea and turn it into a reality, and one of the most difficult parts has been orchestrating the shooting of the last scene.

The group had to obtain permits, licensing and insurance for using the downtown street space for both the concert and the music video shooting, as well as provide refreshments for the extras. They must also spread the word as much as possible.

The band has created a campaign on the crowdfunding website Indiegogo to raise money for the music video. The band has already surpassed their goal of $2000 and is using the donations toward renting equipment, props, costuming and other miscellaneous expenses that come along with shooting a music video.

The most important element for the last scene, however, is the crowd. In order to have a crowd, one needs a pretty large number of people willing to act chaotic and energetic oncamera. The Sun Bones said they believed the best way to entice people to participate was to provide them with something in return — thus, their outdoor concert incentive.

Adara Rae Lialios, frontwoman of the allfemale pop/rock group Adara Rae and the Homewreckers, said she is excited to be assisting the Sun Bones with the project.

“It’s kind of like Tucson musician love going down,” Lialios said. “Hopefully, we’ll get some local support, and it’ll be a good show.”

The Sun Bones are hoping for a turnout of between 200 and 250 people to film the gigantic crowd scene.

“Everyone’s welcome. It’s a free concert; nobody’s doing anything on a Sunday,” Hanshaw said. “My band is committed to providing really cool concert-going opportunities, especially for the under-21 crowd.”

The street concert begins at 1 p.m., and music video filming will commence immediately after. Those interested in being extras are encouraged to wear apocalyptic clothing and makeup without weapons, business casual attire or simply come as they are and be prepared to be part of something unusual and enjoyable.

ALEX GUYTON Daily Wildcat: It’s just called the R Bar? Katherine Bowers: Yeah, we’re part of the Rialto [Theatre] Foundation , so it’s technically a nonprofit. It’s kind of a homage to The Red Room. We share a lot of employees that were working there in the past, and that was an institution downtown everyone really missed. And I think with this bar, not only the aesthetic but also the mentality behind it, we want to bring back that sense of community and sense of specialness.

What was The Red Room?

The Red Room and The Grill were side by side. It was like the only 24-hour place aside from Shot in the Dark . The Red Room is where you’d have shows. It was kind of like where everybody would go.

You didn’t have to call people ahead of time. You’d just know they’d be there.

Do you have a favorite drink to make?

Yeah, it always kind of changes, but I love fortified wine, like vermuths, port, sherries, anything generally with whiskey.

Also, there’s a classic cocktail called The Last Word — that’s maraschino, Chartreuse, a little bit of citrus and gin, and that’s kind of my favorite thing to drink, so it’s my favorite thing to make.

Have you seen anything weird or strange go down at the bar?

No. I mean, we have a really mellow and loyal crowd. … A few nights ago, it was somebody’s birthday, and we got everyone into this Matchbox 20 sing-

along, kind of impromptu. That was pretty special. I enjoyed that. … We just have a lot; everyone’s pretty close here and just a lot of jokes.

Speaking of clientele, you have such a unique location. Do you get people from the Rialto Theatre who are watching concerts to come?

Absolutely. It’s really interesting. It’s kind of a different color every night, depending on if there’s going to be a concert or not. Obviously, the color is always actually red. We have country bands, we have hard core, dissonant metal music, we have techno raves across the way. There’s teenybopper music, and so every night here could be totally different, and we always put on different hats to accommodate that, so it’s very transformative.

Sometimes, we get people coming over from the show. Like, I got to serve the guy from Iron and Wine and that was pretty cool. He’s a really nice dude. … [Insane Clown Posse ], too, that was really funny. … It was actually very fortuitous. They put this 15-foot tall chain-link fence in the alleyway between us. Usually, we connect the patio. There was just this hazy, thick purple smog and everyone yelling, “family” and high-fiving each other, and then there was just this calm. We were just sitting, looking out the window, fascinated by what was happening. …

It smelled like keyboard cleaner and Swishers.

Avid hiker pens great trail guide

reelance and travel writer Roger Naylor visited the Mostly Books store on Thursday evening to promote his new book, “Boots & Burgers: An Arizona Handbook for Hungry Hikers,” which was released earlier this year. the Daily Wildcat caught up with him to talk about his career and new book.

The Daily Wildcat: What made you to want to start hiking/ traveling?

Naylor: I’ve been passionate about hiking ever since I first came to Arizona. I just fell in love with the outdoors. The type of terrain we have here throughout the state varies from region to region, so it’s always a different experience, and I think it’s the best way to see the incredible landscape — the low, slow and quiet, the wildlife, the incredible scenery. And it’s great exercise.

How would you best describe Arizona?

Arizona is best described as my heart. It’s my home. This is this place I always wanted to go. I fell in love with it since I was a little kid and seeing that landscape from all the black-and-white TV as a background for cowboy movies.

So, I was already drawn to Arizona, and it’s full of surprises. It’s filled with magic every day … and that’s the thing I love the most. Here, I can disappear into the desert any time I want. It’s just a miracle.

your butt in the chair, day-in and day-out. You know, some days, the work comes easy, and other days, it’s shit all day long, and it feels like you can’t write your name. But you have to put up with those [difficult days] and work through it. I’ve always been pretty persistent with that.

Is there a place in Arizona you call your favorite?

I’m close to Sedona, so I spent a lot of time hiking in Red Rock country. I really love that. The Grand Canyon is a huge draw for me. I try to get there several times a year. One of my favorite places in the state is around the Tucson area, the southern desert; and Cochise County is, I think, my unsung hero of Arizona, because I love hiking in the Chiricahua Mountains, in the Dragoons.

Is there any advice you’d care to give for a writer in general?

You have to learn how to write a query letter and write what the editor wants, and that means following all the word [counts], being on time with the story, not missing deadlines and always putting in something a little extra.

If I can make the editor’s job easier, then they’re more anxious to hire me the next time around.

On your Web page, it says you’re a “travel writer who hates to travel.” How does that work?

It works pretty well for me.

I don’t just ramble around in Arizona traveling. I don’t have to get on a plane or do much packing.

I just jump in my truck and take a little road trip. I consider Arizona sort of my backyard. I get to write about all these exotic places for newspapers and magazines. It’s pretty nice. I get to travel around, and most nights, I get to sleep in my own bed.

What were some good places to hike or eat at the end of the day?

Well, it depends on what part of the state I’m in. This is why I wanted to write the book because that’s my favorite day. If you can get [up] in the morning and hit the trails, walk for miles and miles, soak up some scenery [and] maybe see some wildlife, enjoy solitude, then on the way home stop at a diner someplace and sink into a juicy burger — that’s just my

What’s been the most enjoyable part of making your third book, including the present?

This was definitely my dream book, and this is one I had in my head before I ever started writing books. These are the kind of days I love, and, back before, when I wasn’t in such demand, I could just have more time to hike and eat and do all that kind of stuff. To actually put this together … and put it out there the way I wanted to, and work with great photographers, [and] see the finished project, is really satisfying.

Ingredients Cookie Dough 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter 1 cup granulated sugar 2 eggs, lightly beaten 1 teaspoon vanilla 3 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt Colored sugar and milk, for decorating, or royal icing (recipe follows)

Royal Icing 2 pounds powdered sugar 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons meringue powder (egg white powder) Food coloring, as desired

Directions Cookie Dough Cream the butter and sugar in a large bowl with an electric mixer. Beat in the eggs and vanilla.

Combine the flour, baking powder and salt in a second large bowl and mix well. Stir the flour mixture into the butter mixture 1 cup at a time.

Chill the dough for 3 to 4 hours.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Line a cookie sheet with parchment. Roll out the dough and cut it into shapes with cookie cutters or a knife. Place the shapes on the prepared cookie sheet. If decorating with colored sugar, brush the cookies with milk and sprinkle with colored sugar. If using royal icing, leave unfinished. Bake until the cookies are just beginning to brown around the edges, 10 to 15 minutes, depending on the size of the cookies.

Remove the cookies to a rack to cool completely. If using royal icing, decorate the cookies as desired.

Royal Icing Combine the powdered sugar, meringue powder and 3/4 cup water in a large bowl. Mix slowly with an electric mixer until stiff enough to form peaks; the icing should be pure white and thick but not fluffy and bubbly. If the frosting is over-beaten, it will get aerated which makes it harder to work with. If this happens, let the frosting sit to settle, and then use a rubber spatula to vigorously beat and smooth out the frosting.

Add up to 1 tablespoon food coloring and mix with a rubber spatula until the color is uniform.

Gels are best with royal icing. You don’t want to thin them with liquid colors. Be careful of adding too much color, which reduces the sheen of the frosting and can break down the consistency of the frosting over a couple of days. Store the icing at room temperature, covered, with plastic wrap on the surface.

6 sappy films to watch over break With the holiday season already upon us, it now feels like the appropriate time for fireplace sitting, marshmallow roasting and a lot of movie watching. There are many cheesy films that are great to watch with family and friends to get into the holiday spirit. Here are six of the cheesiest holiday-themed movies just in time for the cold weather.

1. “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” (1966) The animated version of the book of the same name is the listtopper for cheesy holiday films to watch. The Jim Carrey version with a young Taylor Momsen will always be a great film to see, but the animated film is definitely a movie you watch with the family. The classic songs and subpar animation make it feel like an old family tradition for the holidays.

3. “Love Actually” (2003) “Love Actually” is a great holiday film to make you feel sad, happy, lonely and excited all at once. It makes its way onto this list due to the film’s romantic nature and feel-good ending.

It was one of the early films with an A-list ensemble cast and intertwining storylines. “Love Actually” is definitely a film you should watch with your best friend, a pint of ice cream and a pair of footie pajamas.

5. “The Santa Clause” (1994) The very first “The Santa Clause” film with Tim Allen is a classic holiday film because it combines the reality of dysfunctional family dynamics with the cheer of Christmas. The story follows Allen’s character Scott Calvin as a witness to Santa’s death, and he becomes the next Santa by putting on the suit, because who actually reads the terms and conditions, right? Any one of the films in the franchise would be an appropriate cheesy-holiday film to check out.

Delve into Roth’s dystopia before film

nyone who saw “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1” since its release probably saw a teaser trailer showing a pixie-cut Shailene Woodley surrounded by rubble, jumping from flaming buildings and swinging from ropes — unlike her expunged role in “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.” For those who may not know any better, the trailer looked like a preview for another sci-fi action thriller.

But just before the feature motion picture rolled, the trailer revealed its title: “Insurgent,” the second film installment of the “Divergent” series by Veronica Roth.

It’s nearly impossible to talk about young adult dystopian fiction without recognizing their movie counterparts. With the “Insurgent” movie set to premiere in March, those who heed fiction-before-film will surge in readership in preparation for the film.

The series is currently fifth on The New York Times Best Sellers List, sitting just above “The Hunger Games.” The popular culture and genre have become sensationalized; just like the “Insurgent” trailer itself.

But what is striking about the trailer is how disparate it feels compared to the novel.

“Insurgent” begins immediately where “Divergent” left off, with Beatrice “Tris” Prior and Tobias “Four” Eaton seeking refuge from the death and destruction of the previous book.

The five factions­— Abnegation, the selfless; Amity, the peaceful; Candor, the honest; Dauntless, the brave; and Erudite, the intelligent ­— are at war for the first time, and the fictionalized, future Chicago is in chaos. After the Erudite takeover of the Dauntless population that resulted in the near obliteration of Abnegation members, including Tris’ parents, Tris and Four join a group of survivors who are at the mercy of the Amity people, and they must decide if they can remain hidden within the faction.

Experiencing the Amity faction as a setting in the novel adds another layer to the city, revealing a group that operates exclusively on community input and democratic process.

All members must vote on whether to let the refugees stay and risk possible involvement in the war, or to send them away and risk their lives. Though Amity more closely resembles our political structure, unlike Dauntless’ rigorous and cruel ousting of people who do not pass initiation, which was the framework of “Divergent,” there’s an uneasy feeling that something is amiss in Amity’s fair process.

Tris as a narrator can be hard to juggle in “Insurgent.” She is grieving over her parents’ deaths and the incredible guilt she feels for both for them and the murder of her friend,

who was under the control of Erudite during the attack. Like other teenage protagonists in love, she is dealing with her newfound relationship with Four, who has his own demons she must help him overcome.

These personal conflicts are in conjunction with the overarching plot of Erudite control and a rising rebellion. It’s a lot to grapple with, especially considering Tris is bound up in these conflicts with seemingly everyone she knows. And Tris, though aptly written as emotional and confused, can be grating as a narrator, making the reader tired, annoyed and in want of answers she can’t provide.

Despite the immense number of plot elements and the complicated web of relationships, “Insurgent,” at its core, isn’t a sensational thriller as the trailer implies. It’s about grief, sacrifice, betrayal and, ultimately, the consequences of discovering the truth.

The threat to peace in the first book was the divergent population upsetting the order between the factions. In “Insurgent,” the very foundation for society itself — the factions — comes crumbling down, leaving the characters and the reader desperate for a foothold.

The Reel Deal

Redmayne shows many shades of genius in new Hawking biopic

ddie Redmayne is Stephen Hawking. That’s the first thing to say about “The Theory of Everything.” The actor, known for “My Week with Marilyn” and 2012’s “Les Misérables,” totally inhabits his role as the brilliant physicist.

A young man pursing a doctoral degree in physics at Cambridge University, Hawking is a little how one might expect: bespectacled, lanky and not the most socially adept of people. After having a conversation with Jane Wilde (Felicity Jones), the woman who will become his wife and long-time supporter, that lasts the whole night, he commits the cardinal sin of not getting her number. Thankfully, she gives it to him anyway.

Hawking isn’t all innocent, bookish brains, though. He has a bit of humor laced with a scientifically-superior haughtiness that he keeps throughout his life. Redmayne navigates between the two personas exceptionally well. A slight laugh and grin is actually a scoff when Jane tells him she’s studying medieval poetry and that she believes in God. As proof of the theory that opposites attract, Jane and Stephen, the scientist and the artist, begin dating. Jones and Redmayne sink into the puppy love just as well as anyone, but the days of carefree, wide-eyed adoration are few.

In a great move by director James Marsh and screenwriter Anthony McCarten, the coming tragedy — and triumph — of Hawking presents itself as odd hiccups in his movements. There’s knocking over a coffee cup or his slight difficulty in grabbing a pen. Close-ups of his feet as he moves reveal the occasional stumble or their awkward placement.

Of course, these seemingly innocuous occurrences are the precursors to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a motorneuron disease commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s. The disease eats away at Hawking over time, and this cruel, slow breakdown of the body is where Redmayne transcends from acting to inhabiting.

Hawking’s struggles frustrating and disheartening. Climbing up the stairs of his own home, in a scene that recalls the grueling ascent of Shailene Woodley’s cancer-stricken character up a narrow staircase in “The Fault in Our Stars,” is an impossible challenge. Sometimes, Redmayne’s face is screwed up in a grimace, sometimes it’s a grin and a lot of the time, it’s hard to tell.

It might be a slight stretch to say that Redmayne carries the film, but there is an emphasis placed on “slight.” The film recounts his advancements in physics that were truly revolutionary in their day, but the audience is not given an appropriate amount of time to digest it all. For a film dealing with black holes and space-time relativity, “Interstellar” respects the science more than a film intended to be about one of the greatest pioneers in the field.

The film’s shots and colors are beautiful and varied, almost to the point of distraction. Cinematographer Benoît Delhomme had a field day with the palette. The images are sumptuous, but there doesn’t seem to be any cohesion to the aesthetics apart from everything being bathed in a soft, warm glow. In one scene, a church has a green-tint as if it

might be underwater, and in the next, it is shot very realistically. Of course, there’s a place for expressionistic, subjective lighting, but it seemed to be overused here.

A theory that connected all of the different physical forces of the universe, a theory of everything, was what Hawking has dedicated his life to discovering.

To this day, he is still on the search.

Like Hawking, the film is eluded by the consummate cohesion that it so desires.

However, it is Hawking — or rather, Redmayne as Hawking — that makes it worthwhile.

charity without church The Secular Student Alliance completes a semeseter-long service project of offering aid to Tucson’s homeless

here do you get your morals? Do you worship Satan? Why do you hate God?” It’s questions such as these that members of the Secular Student Alliance must tackle in their mission to rid the negativity associated with the term “atheist.”

Meeting on a weekly basis, the 40 members of the club gather to create a safe-place to discuss ideas, tell anecdotes and hold a few debates. A typical topic is learning how to be comfortable sharing one’s atheist or agnostic beliefs with friends and family.

“Getting rid of the stigma is definitely part of the mission of this club,” said Jessica Draper, a political science junior who founded the club two years ago.

As president of the club, Draper is attempting to shift its direction toward more community involvement.

Starting earlier this semester, the SSA launched its first service project by donating care packages to Tucson’s homeless population. Members were broken up into four teams and competed to accumulate the greatest amount of helpful supplies such as toothpaste, socks and shampoo. The club estimates to have gathered enough supplies for 50 total care packages, which they will hand out later this month.

The service project was inspired by observations made by the club’s events coordinator, R.T. Justice, a business management student. After experiencing a few, brief bouts of homelessness himself while

traveling across the country, Justice noticed how some Christian-based charities required a declaration of faith before handing out donations to the homeless.

“Our goal is to kind of mimic what churches do,” Draper said. Draper has dreams of someday opening a purely secular homeless shelter where the needy won’t feel pressured to adopt beliefs that are not their own.

Draper realized she was an atheist at the age of 11 when she joined the chat room of the virtual pet community Neopets and had her worldview broadened by online acquaintances. Draper’s father is also an atheist, yet he grew up in the polygamist sect known as the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints.

Though a relative of the FLDS Church’s former president, Warren Jeffs, who was infamously convicted for two counts of child sexual abuse in 2011, Draper said she and her family have long been disassociated with the church.

Even with a father who supported her beliefs, Draper said she still had a hard time admitting her atheism while in high school. When arriving at the UA, Draper set out to build a community for atheists, agnostics and curious individuals to freely express their doubts or passions regarding religion.

“Don’t think you’re alone, because that’s how

most of us felt before we joined,” said Alexandra Mazur, an elementary education junior and vice president of SSA. Mazur said her journey to becoming atheistic was a long process of self-exploration. Not coming from a religious household, Mazur experimented going to church while in high school as she thought it would make her a good person.

Disagreeing with some homophobic ideas preached by her church, Mazur left to find a new home at the SSA when she was a freshman.

“They are the friends I know I will be friends with the rest of my life,” Mazur said.

From hiking trips to potluck parties, the SSA encourages a strong social component to the club. In order to become an official member, a student — Jessica Draper, SSA president is required to attend at least half of all SSA meetings and commit regularly to volunteering at club events.

The SSA can frequently be seen tabling on the UA Mall throughout the semester, where members invite passersby to start a conversation on any facet of atheism or religion. “Send an Atheist to Church” is a fundraiser put on by the club every semester where people can vote with their dollars what denomination of church they send an SSA member.

Mazur said a major principle of SSA is education in all religions. The club has begun a partnership

with the UA chapter of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship to co-host events allowing members of each club to start a dialogue on one another’s beliefs.

“Everyone has such strong opinions, and everyone thinks differently,” said Gabriela Diaz, a journalism senior. Growing up in the predominantly Catholic culture of Puerto Rico, Diaz said she found a family of like-minded people when she joined SSA just over a year ago.

The club is a versatile mix of personalities and backgrounds. From art students to computer science majors, the SSA welcomes the most unshakable atheists but also those just uncertain about their beliefs. Draper said she hopes to expand the club’s presence around the UA community next semester by possibly staging a SSA talent show and celebrating Charles Darwin’s birthday in February with an evolution-themed event.

Community service will remain a priority for the club as, at their last meeting, members discussed ideas to build relationships with local elementary schools to offer after-school tutoring.

A main objective for SSA will still be trying to get others to understand club members’ ideology.

“We are not Satanism,” Mazur said. The club jokingly discussed the future prospect of inviting a group of Satanists at an upcoming meeting to learn about a worldview it frequently gets mistaken for.

Protecting abandoned animals Alexandra Paletta

hile many philanthropy groups focus on helping people, a new UA club provides a voice for humanity’s four-legged friends.

The Wildcats Committed to Animal Rescue and Education aims to protect disposed animals around Tucson.

Amanda Gunderson and Ashley Gurevitz, the club’s president and vice president, respectively, founded the club with the mission to help local homeless and abused animals through volunteering, educating and fundraising. Both Gunderson and Gurevitz are kitten owners and frequent animal shelter volunteers.

At monthly meetings, those in the club research educational topics to discuss among members and start dialogues about potential animal response and care. Topics

of discussion vary from issues such as Responsible Pet Ownership and trap, neuter and release programs for feral cats, collaborated between the two leaders.

After talking about Responsible Pet Ownership, members then wrote a pledge for their responsibilities as pet owners and personal promotion of responsible pet ownership. Such conversations allow for a broader understanding of what animal rescue truly means.

Club members also volunteer at the Pima Animal Care Center and Pima Paws for Life. With two volunteer events planned per month, the club also plans to help the Hermitage Cat Shelter and the Humane Society of Southern Arizona.

The club recently had a fundraiser at Mama’s Hawaiian BBQ to benefit Pima Paws for Life and raise money to be donated for animal food, space and other resources shelters are commonly

“It’s a rewarding experience when I see a dog or cat I helped get adopted,” Gurevitz said. “It continues to remind me why I go and volunteer: to ensure that each animal gets the loving home they deserve.”

Students innovate with charity projects

here are many great philanthropy opportunities to be found in Tucson, but for this group of students, giving back to the community is done out of respect for their club motto: enable progress through entrepreneurial action.

Enactus, a student club founded in 1998, is one of many university chapters associated with the international Enactus organization — formerly Students In Free Enterprise — for the purpose of using entrepreneurial concepts to impact the community. Students in the club come up with projects that will be applied in the community to improve quality of life and living standards.

“A lot of our projects have been offcampus,” said Mariah Hoskins, vice president of membership and marketing.

“Mostly, the on-campus events are for recruiting new members.”

Hoskins said she was recruited to join the club by word of mouth and has been in the club for the last three years.

nharmonics A Cappella is the newest all-female a cappella group at UA that follows in the footsteps of the musical trend made popular by the 2012 film “Pitch Perfect.”

Even in the club’s photo featured on its website, the group embodies the outgoing and sassy attitudes of the all-female a cappella troupe from the film. Enharmonics joins an already blossoming genre of music on campus with groups such as CatCall and Dolce.

The brainchild of two best friends with a love for music, Enharmonics is just the beginning for a growing minority of performers on campus. Dana Douglas, a choral music education junior, is the club president and founded the group with Allie Esposito, a junior studying music education and German studies.

“We missed singing music from the a cappella jazz choir and decided to create our own a cappella group so that we could experience it again,” Esposito said.

The group includes women of various backgrounds, from freshmen to seniors.

Many of the women had prior experiences in performing arts, such as theater, choir and dance, before joining Enharmonics.

There are even a few members with no experience whatsoever.

“Being in performing arts, it is really great to see more clubs associated with the arts growing at [the] UA,” said Danielle BorgJames, a dance sophomore. “It takes talent

and guts to sing and dance in front of your peers, and people sometimes underestimate the courage performers have to have when they step on stage.”

Although not all of the members have majors in music or the arts, the women all seem to share a common enthusiasm for beautiful, harmonic music.

“Music has always been and will always be a huge passion of mine,” said Samantha Feldman, a creative writing junior, who has been singing in choirs since the age of 7. Other women in the group include those majoring in nursing and aerospace engineering.

“I think a cappella is a great way for people who like performing to get involved in college,” said Ali Harms, a neuroscience junior with a musical theater background.

“Performing arts isn’t always a practical career path for some, so being able to continue with a passion, while getting a degree in something else, is a great option.”

The diversity in the group is definitely something that allows Enharmonics to stand out as a newcomer to the university a cappella scene. Enharmonics most recently attended the Baby AZAF at Arizona State University on Nov. 1, along with CatCall and Dolce. The event is an official showcase held at a state university for the 11 a cappella groups from the three state universities to come and perform.

Tonight, the No. 7/8 Wildcats (10-2, 7-2 Pac-12 Conference) face No. 2/3 Oregon (11-1, 8-1) in the Pac-12 Championship game in Santa Clara, Calif., at 7 p.m. on Fox, seeking their third win over the Ducks in 13 months.

“If you are a competitor at all, you want to play for championships,” UA head coach Rich Rodriguez said.

Arizona beat then-No. 5 Oregon 42-16 last year in Tucson and then beat the Ducks 31-24 in Eugene, Ore., on Oct. 2. However, the Ducks

have won seven straight games since, with the closet margin being 12 points, at then-No. 18 UCLA, a squad Arizona lost to.

“It’s tough to beat a good team twice, although it is definitely not impossible,” UA safety Jared Tevis said.

Arizona’s last outright conference championship was in 1936.

A win now could vault Arizona into the College Football Playoff.

“Everything, other than being undefeated, is probably still out there for us,” Rodriguez said.

“That’s pretty neat in the first week of December.”

Marcus Mariota leads the Oregon offense.

The Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year has set the Pac-12 single season and career records for total touchdowns, and he’s just a junior. The UO quarterback has 48 touchdowns this season (36 passing, 11 rushing, one receiving) and 126 career touchdowns.

“You are talking about the guy that is probably going to win the Heisman Trophy and will be a first-round pick,” Rodriguez said on Sunday. “I don’t know if he can declare it now and get out before Friday, but he has been a phenomenal player, and he has been really good against us, too. We have just been really lucky to get some things offensively and keep

him off the field more often.”

The previous single-season touchdown record was 41 set by USC’s Matt Barkley in 2011, and the old career touchdown record was 122 by Barkley.

Get to know the Championship Game

Pac-12

This is Arizona’s first Pac-12 Championship game appearance, so introductions are probably in order.

The 2014 edition is the fourth Pac-12 Championship game.

Oregon won the first one 49-31 over UCLA, Stanford won the second 27-24 over UCLA and the third 3814 over ASU. This is the first Pac-12 Championship game to be held at

a neutral site. The first one was at Oregon, the second at Stanford and the third at ASU. Levi’s Stadium is the home of the San Francisco 49ers and opened in August. The stadium cost $1.2 billion and seats about 68,500. It is located in Santa Clara, Calif., 45 miles from San Francisco.

Levi’s is the first American profootball stadium to achieve LEED Gold certification. The stadium features a live dashboard with current energy, water, air and other “dynamic” green features.

Not to mention the stadium is made from recycled materials, and 100 percent of the wood is recycled.

Oregon strikes back

Last time Arizona and Oregon played, the Wildcats spoiled the party.

All signs pointed to the Ducks getting revenge against Arizona. The UA shocked the UO 42-16 in 2013, and, surely, Oregon would not let it happen again, right?

It was a Thursday night prime time game and Autzen Stadium’s 100th sellout in a row, so the Ducks would surely get revenge, right?

Well, we all know what happened, and afterwards, UA officials posted photoshopped images, such as the Duck Hunt video game parody “Won the Day” — after Oregon’s “Win the Day” slogan — and “Duck dynasty is over.”

Both head coaches downplayed revenge, but was it that wise to pour gasoline on that fire?

Mariota struggles against Arizona

In his last two games against the Wildcats, Heisman frontrunner in quarterback Marcus Mariota had a raw quarterback rating of a 53.1 and 47.2, respectively. Mariota threw two interceptions against Arizona last season and had one key turnover against the Wildcats back in early October. If the Wildcats want to win, they will need to get in Mariota’s head just as they have in their past two matchups.

Defensive-minded

In an epic clash reminiscent of Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi’s battle in “Revenge of the Sith,” the last game came down to a mano a mano battle between the Pac-12 Conference’s offensive and defensive players of the year.

UA linebacker Scooby Wright stripped UO quarterback Marcus Mariota of the ball to secure the win.

Many thought that ended Mariota’s Heisman hopes, but after one of the best regular season’s ever (48 touchdowns), Mariota is ready for not only revenge but also his Heisman moment.

Sure, he literally struck the pose against Oregon State last week, but it’s terrible and this is the spotlight game, not the Iron Bowl. People will be watching.

Attack of the Ducks defense

UA quarterback Anu Solomon had a solid game passing in Arizona’s win over ASU, but it wasn’t the same story on the ground.

Solomon was 15-for-21 for 208 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions through the air but had nine rushes for -47 yards. Obviously, he didn’t run backwards on purpose; the Sun Devils brought the house and sacked him four times, scoring on a fumble once.

Oregon knows Solomon has been wounded for weeks and this is Arizona’s seventh straight game, so it will come after the rookie as if he has the Death Star plans.

Over the past four games, the Arizona defense has shined. UA safeties Will Parks, Jared Tevis, Tra’Mayne Bondurant and Jourdon Grandon have totaled 14 tackles for loss, six sacks, five interceptions and three forced fumbles. In addition, linebacker Scooby Wright has been unstoppable, becoming the only player in all of college football to rank in the top 25 in tackles, tackles for loss, sacks and forced fumbles.

Although the UA offense highlighted the beginning of the season, the defense has obviously carried the team for a majority of its more recent victories. If they want to beat the Ducks, the Wildcats must start fast and cause turnovers.

Many have predicted that Arizona will be the dark horse in making the NCAA’s first-ever College

Playoff. In fact, this weekend will be the decisive factor. The Wildcats must defeat Oregon to stay alive in the playoff race. If it can get the victory, this team will be one of the best UA football teams ever.

The Ducks might pretend they’re confident, but how can they be? Arizona has manhandled one of the best teams in the country in two consecutive matchups.

The 42-16 loss last season was marked as a fluke. But Arizona proved that wasn’t the case by defeating the Ducks again this season.

’Cats and Bulldogs do battle in McKale ROBERTO PAYNE No. 3 Arizona men’s basketball will have its biggest test of the season when No. 9 Gonzaga comes to McKale Center. If there was ever a measuring-stick game for the Wildcats, this would be it.

“They have a talented team and, no question, we’re going to be in for a huge challenge on Saturday,” UA men’s basketball head coach Sean Miller said. “On our end, we have to have a great performance to beat a team like Gonzaga, because they’re one of the nation’s elite teams.”

Gonzaga comes into this matchup as one of the most explosive offensive teams in the nation. Leading the way for the Bulldogs is Kentucky transfer Kyle Wiltjer with 16 points per game.

Wiltjer, the most undervalued member of the 2012 National Champion Kentucky team, transferred to Gonzaga after it was clear that John Calipari’s recruits would get more playing time than the 6-foot-9 power forward. That’s not to say he’s not talented enough to start, because he definitely is.

As a power forward with range, Wiltjer is third on the team in 3-point makes with nine behind sharpshooters Kevin Pangos and Gary Bell Jr. Speaking of Pangos and Bell Jr., few teams in the nation can boast a better shooting backcourt than the Bulldogs can. Each is able to fire off rounds of deep balls that are enough to cripple most defenses on their own.

In that regard, Pangos is one of the most

feared shooters in the nation. The 6-foot-2 guard may be averaging only 12.3 points per game, but his shooting percentages are off the charts. His marks — 58 percent from the field, 90 percent from the charity stripe and 46 percent from behind the arc — are reminiscent of Steve Nash.

After allowing 10 3-pointers against GardnerWebb on Tuesday, Miller said his team has to protect the perimeter better in order to stay competitive with Gonzaga.

“We don’t want to give up 10 3’s, especially at 35 percent; that’s too high,” Miller said. “We’ll look at the film [and] figure out what we did wrong.”

From Arizona’s side, this game is more about seeing how effective the team is against premier competition. While it’s played solid teams, the only notable win was the 61-59 victory over then-No. 15 San Diego State in Hawaii.

Considering the Pac-12 Conference as a whole is down talent-wise, these impactful nonconference games are critical for Arizona’s tournament resume. And let’s be real: It’s all about the tournament for the Wildcats.

They are behind an offense led by Stanley Johnson at 14.1 points per game and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson at 13.4 points per game, respectively. The wing duo has stepped up in a big way for a team that desperately needed a scoring punch.

Volleyball advances in NCAA tourney MATT WALL No. 11 Arizona volleyball swept the Yale Bulldogs in a three-set affair (25-12, 25-17, 25-19) in the opening round of the NCAA tournament, capitalizing on the McKale Center home court advantage.

The Wildcats opened strong against the Bulldogs in the first two sets, consistently taking large leads and gathering momentum behind the crowd.

“I thought it was nice to play at home,” UA head coach Dave Rubio said. “That makes a very nerveracking beginning a little bit more comfortable for us. I thought we really played within ourselves.”

Senior standout and outside hitter Madi Kingdon led the Wildcats with a double-double of 18 kills and 14 digs. Fellow outside hitter Taylor Arizobal added seven kills and seven digs, while libero Ronni Lewis had 11 digs.

Yale head coach Erin Appleman applauded Kingdon’s performance and said that it was tough to play at the same level as the Wildcats.

“I thought we played really tough tonight,” Appleman said. “The Pac-12 [Conference] is definitely a different level of volleyball than we are used to seeing, and Madi [Kingdon] was really good tonight.”

For the Bulldogs, outside hitter Mollie Rogers had a team-high 10 kills, and setter Kelly Johnson added seven kills as well. Yale also hit a seasonlow .076 for the match.

During the third set, the Wildcats started off slow, falling behind 6-3 before calling a time out to refocus.

“It took us a little while to execute better,” Rubio said. “Their one server really gave us some trouble; I think it was No. 7. Their sub went in, and we didn’t handle her serve very well, and she scored a lot of points when she was serving, so there [are] certainly areas that we can get better in.”

Arizona was able to regain its focus behind a crowd that provided energy for the Wildcats.

From that point on, Arizona went on a 22-13 run to secure the victory.

“It’s way more fun to play in front of a big crowd like that,” Kingdon said, “and it’s the biggest crowd that I have ever seen here, so it was exciting to see.”

Up next, the Wildcats will face a physical BYU volleyball team that swept its opponent Seton Hall earlier on Thursday afternoon before the UA/Yale game. BYU has an overall record of 26-4 and 16-2 in the West Coast Conference.

“BYU is certainly a team that, if they were playing in our conference, I feel would be a topfour team,” Rubio said. “They have the size, the experience, the ball handling — and so the good news is that we are used to playing at that level.”

Arizona is 10-0 in NCAA play in McKale Center, an added bonus for the upcoming BYU match.
