Rodeo Day rounds up local art

he fourth annual Rodeo Day Arts Celebration commemorates local artists, musicians and traditions based on rodeo and Southwestern culture.

RDAC will feature the works of more than 40 artists who use Southwestern themes, including fine art, metal, glass, ceramics, leather and wood mediums.

Susan French said she started RDAC because she believed Tucson had room for something to celebrate its rodeo, art and music cultures as well as its “beautiful architecture.”

Although many events are centered around the renowned rodeo taking place during the weekend, French’s aspiration was to create an event that will “promote creative people and give them the opportunity to showcase their talent.”

Throughout the day, Ruben Moreno’s Mariachi Herradura, Arizona Dance Hands and Sonoran Dogs will perform various styles of country western music.

Artist Bernard Fierro will exhibit his oil and acrylic paintings for the first time at RDAC. His work depicts scenes from his daily life on a ranch and highlights the animals and the environment. Fierro said he is exhibiting his pieces at RDAC because he believes the themes from his work directly relate to the rodeo and will allow those interested to “share in [his] lifestyle.”

“It shows you what ranch life really is,” said Heidi Vanderbilt, Fierro’s wife. “The rodeo is five to 10 days a year, but this is what goes on the rest of the time.”

French chose Plaza Palomino as the location because she wants to showcase the recent $5 million renovation. The plaza used to be the place to go, she said, but it eventually fell off of the map for a lot of people. Over the past year and a half, the new owners have reinvested in the area, and French said she hopes that the RDAC will create traffic and

spark renewed interest. Last year 800 people attended the event, and this year organizers project a turnout of around 1,000 people.

Two of the restaurants located at Plaza Palomino — Vero Amore and Cafe Francais — will be open for guests to enjoy, and the BBQ Rush food truck will be there as well. Beer from Thunder Canyon and Nimbus breweries will be priced at $5 a cup, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the Tucson Musicians Museum Mentorship Program, according to French.

The mentorship program pairs established musicians with youth interested in music who otherwise may not have the means to pursue education in it. Since its creation in 2008, the program has sponsored around 18 of Tucson’s youth, many of whom have graduated and now are members of Ruben Moreno’s group called Mariachi Herradura. French said the founders are hoping to expand the program with the funds they receive from beer sales.

The overall atmosphere of RDAC is intended to be lively, and guests are encouraged to get into the spirit and don Western attire. French hopes to add to the fun with a 1:30 p.m. “quickdraw” competition featuring former Tucson Mayor Bob Walkup and current Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild, with David Fitzsimmons, a cartoonist for the Arizona Daily Star, officiating. Fitzsimmons will have a silent auction for each drawing, and the person whose art raises the most money gets to continue on to the next round. The loser will be replaced by other local personalities.

French said she hopes that at the end of the day people leave with a smile on their face and an appreciation for Tucson art.

“What I really want to do is show off a little bit of Tucson,” said French.

The celebration is on Sunday at Plaza Palomino from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; admission is free.

Does Twitter make you a better comic?

When I first heard of it, I thought it was stupid, but I still enjoy it. It clears my brain for when the next joke is coming through. I think I have to force myself to think of jokes during the day, which I never used to do before Twitter. I would rather sift through litter boxes than selfpromote, but it’s an enormous part of my job.

Mary Tyler Moore wrote the foreword to your book. How did you get her to do that?

We’re good friends. When I was first working on it she said, “Don’t tell anyone about it,” because she thought it was a great idea to poke fun at these iconic figures. I sent the book to her and she left me a message talking about how much she liked it … and I think she just volunteered to write the foreword to it … now that I think about it.

hen she’s not wrangling one of her many house cats, Paula Poundstone is attempting to find the humor out of everyday life. A veteran comic who has worked with Jay Leno and Rosie O’Donnell, Poundstone currently performs as a panelist on the weekly NPR program “Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me!” Starting this month, she’ll hit the road on a comic tour throughout the country, and Fox Tucson Theatre will be one of her first stops this Saturday night. Poundstone had a moment to chat with the Daily Wildcat on her life and work: When did you first realize that you were funny?

The first sentence on a note from my kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Thump, told my parents how much she enjoyed having me in her class. I don’t remember what I did, but Mrs. Thump seemed to think I was great.

You dropped out of high school to become a stand-up comic; how did you have the courage to do that?

I sort of oozed out of high school. I was a miserable and depressed youth. At 19, I was bussing tables in Boston, and it was there that resurgence in the art of the stand-up comic

You once performed at a White House Correspondents’ Dinner. What was that like?

As a performer, it was horrendous. The event itself has grown and grown with news coverage, but when I did it back during the George [H. W. Bush] administration, it was much more lowkey. Basically, nobody listens. Everyone is so into looking at one another that they don’t pay attention to the people performing. They were a horrible crowd to entertain.

Your book “There’s Nothing in This Book That I Meant to Say” uses historical figures as metaphors for your own life experiences.

Why did you choose to do that?

Part of the joke was to pick people who were really iconic. The first that dawned on me was Lincoln. All of a sudden, it dawned on me that if I were to ever try and write a book about Lincoln, I couldn’t help but write about myself

What you do on “Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me!” is completely improvised. Do you prefer that over stand-up?

I really do mix improv into my stand-up.

My favorite part is talking to the audience.

Improvisation has a lot of flavor to it, and it’s very conversational, which is basically what stand-up is as well.

What can people expect from your show?

It’s about living in a house full of animals and raising kids. It will be a lot of talking to the audience, as that’s what I like to do.

he snow and freezing temperatures in New York City didn’t stop the fiercest designers and models in the fashion industry from stomping down the runways last week.

Though Fashion Week has come to a close, the hottest trends are just beginning.

What pieces straight from the runway should end up in your closet this spring?

J. Cole launches witty mixtape

ast month North Carolina rapper J. Cole released his fourth official mixtape, Revenge of the Dreamers, to celebrate the launch of his record label, Dreamville Records, reaching a partnership with Interscope Records.

Advertised as a J. Cole solo mixtape, the 11-track project is actually a collaborative effort from Cole and fellow Dreamville artists Bas and Omen . A focused effort from him and his team, the project is a return to form for Cole.

After a short snippet of a track where Cole raps over an interpolation of the instrumental from Tupac’s “Ambition Az A Ridah,” the mixtape kicks off with tracks from Bas and Omen, respectively.

The junior statesmen of Cole’s label use a familiar Dreamville formula of deep, brooding p r o d u c t i o n punctuated by agile lyricism. Bas plots his attack on the rap game on “Golden Goals” and Omen confesses his latest insecurities and regrets on “Motion Picture.”

Next is the standout track from Bas’ 2013 mixtape Quarter Water Raised Me Vol. II , “Lit,” which features Cole and Dreamville associate KQuick. Bas and Cole ride a smooth Miguel sample courtesy of producer Ced, Bas telling the tale of his courtship of a centerfold, Cole reflecting on his past and his journey through life.

Five songs in, Cole fans finally get what they’ve been waiting for on “Revenge of

the Dreamers.” The mixtape’s title track recalls classic Cole from his Warm Up and Friday Night Lights days. Cole is witty, introspective and unapologetic throughout, declaring, “Got what you want, I got what you need, my heart on my sleeve, watch me bleed. Dreamville is the team, my team iller than fiends, and you ain’t real as you seem.” The instrumental couples a punchy piano sample with stripped-down, boom-bap percussion, reminiscent of his earlier work.

Perhaps the most interesting song on the tape is the final track, the original recording of “Crooked Smile.” A different version shipped on Cole’s 2013 Born Sinner album and peaked at No. 4 on the U.S. rap charts. That version features a sugary piano beat and poppy chorus from TLC .

The song’s original incarnation, h o w e v e r , interpolates another Tupac beat, “Str8 Ballin,” and has no hook.

Furthermore, the album version’s second and third verses aim to empower listeners to be themselves and embrace their flaws. Though a commendable sentiment, it is cliché. The verses on the mixtape version are anecdotes from Cole’s youth when he was teased for having bad teeth — a real example of being true to himself.

“Crooked Smile,” in its two vastly different manifestations, epitomizes J. Cole’s internal struggle to balance commercial appeal and integrity with his roots.

Cole’s message has remained the same throughout his transition from unsigned hype to Jay-Z protégé, but his sound hasn’t quite discovered itself. Though the quality of his rhymes rarely wavers, the glossy overproduced sound of his albums feels forced and inauthentic. Revenge of

is the season … for new music! Spring and music festival season are upon us. From SXSW 2014 to Sasquatch, spring brings outdoor music festivals, an increase in tours and a slew of fresh releases. Here are some new songs to brighten your day and give you a sample of what’s ahead.

1. Temples: “Shelter Song”

The opening track to Sun Structures sounds like genuine 1960s music rather than the modern day revival of psychedelia. However, their timing, in the reign of Tame Impala, is impeccable. Listen to their debut album out now.

2. Tacocat: “Crimson Wave”

A surf-rock take on that time of the month: “all the girls are surfing the wave.” The carefree group from Seattle puts a positive spin and a catchy melody on menstruation. Tacocat’s second fulllength album releases Feb. 25 via Hardly Art.

Sounds like a fusion between Bass Drum of Death and Smith Westerns. Twin Peaks will be touring with The Orwells and playing again at SXSW in March.

7. Woods: “Moving to the Left”

While Woods are often confined to labels such as “folk” and “jam band,” they are capable of much more. The new track serves as an example of their strong melodic talents and whimsical sound. Sounds like a polished Dr. Dog. Their new album With Light and With Love debuts April 15 from their own label Woodsist.

If fans have learned anything about Mac DeMarco, it’s that he is not shy. In terms of sharing tracks from his new album, the same can be said. 5. Marissa Nadler: “Was It A Dream”

The song poses the same of Nadler’s new album: a dream or a nightmare? Nadler blurs the lines of a sound both enchanting and haunting.

Sounds like Angel Olsen and Cate Le Bon. Her new album July is out now.

The new single from Pure X sounds like the song your parents slow-danced to at their prom.

The track, which lacks the band’s usual plethora of effects, proves that less is more for Pure X. Its album Angel is out April 1 via Fat Possum.

9. Nimmo and the Gauntletts “Jaded”

U.K. duo Sarah Nimmo and Reva Gauntlett are childhood friends making intimate yet up-tempo pop music. Their voices intertwine perfectly with their rich and full pop sound.

Sounds like a darker Polica. Jaded releases March 24.

To that end, the Ornelas family will be set up in the weaving tent, where they will demonstrate how to transform raw wool into a fine tapestry with other family members, including sixth-generation weaver Michael Ornelas and seventhgeneration weaver Roxanne Lee. Another member of the family, Terry Lee, will be showing weaving tools, both decorative and functional. Ornelas said there will be activities for kids and plenty of people will be around to answer any question visitors might have.

This year’s featured artist is Jody Folwell, a well-known avant garde clay artist of the Santa Clara Pueblo in New Mexico. She will

both discuss and sell her work at the fair.

A third component of this year’s festival is the Friends of Hubbell Trading Post’s benefit rug auction, which will feature the weavings of many artists. Proceeds go to scholarship funds for Navajo and Hopi college students. Viewing is from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday and bidding begins at noon in the Center for English as a Second Language auditorium. Lizarraga said the fair is more than just a craft sale — this celebration is the largest public event the museum hosts that represents its mission.

“We want to promote the understanding and appreciation and respect of the peoples and cultures of the region,” Lizarraga said.

Yeah. Up until recently, we just had to do away with the writing because of the fire. We’re known for our Bob Burger and our graffiti on our walls.

There was a really big fire next door and we had really bad smoke damage and we could not get the smell of the smoke out, so we had to treat the walls.

We’ve been on the corner here for 30 years.

Healthy ways to get a spring break body Camille Carlin Spring break is only a month away, which means it’s time to stock up on healthy foods and start a workout routine to get in swimsuitready shape. This season is dreadful for many people, but it doesn’t have to be. Here are some options for getting healthy for sunny spring break days.

“The idea is for it to be similar to HIIT, which is High Intensity Interval Training, where one does cardio for five minutes and then switches and does interval drills that work on different parts of the body, and then returns back to the cardio,” said Megan Bidal, a language and literacy junior. “It is a lot of work, and the results are noticeable even after two weeks of

Healthy eating

One cannot simply exercise and expect to be spring break-ready by that fateful week in March. It’s important to maintain a healthy diet — one that includes fruits, protein, dairy and grains — on top of exercising and sleeping.

Be mindful, though, because all food products must be consumed in moderation. A great way to do this is to plan out your workout

routine for each day alongside your sleep pattern and food intake. That way, you can allow yourself a cheat day once a week.

Allowing a cheat day not only gives your body a sign that it can rest, but it also proves to yourself that you have self control. Selfcontrol is the key term; if you control your portions, then healthy eating is a breeze.

A great resource when contemplating a diet change is the Healthy Living page of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention site. It offers tips for those who struggle with self-control and advice to those who are unsure of whether their diet is truly healthy or not. Everyone loves their In-N-Out Burger, and that’s understandable.

If you limit yourself and only go once a week, you will likely appreciate it more, while rewarding yourself for your dedication to a healthy lifestyle.

‘True Detective’ no average crime drama

ive episodes into its inaugural season, HBO’s “True Detective” is off to a fantastic start.

Hollywood A-listers Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson star as bluecollar Louisiana detectives Rust Cohle and Martin Hart. In 1995, they closed the sadistic murder case of a woman named Dora Lange. Now, a new set of cops, played by TV regulars Tory Kittles and Michael Potts, reopen the case — because it appears the murderer has struck again. It raises the question of whether the true killer was ever caught in the first place, and whether one of the detectives might be the culprit.

The show is presented in two alternating eras, with the presentday Cohle and Hart in separate rooms, telling their respective sides of the story. This style not only pushes the plot forward, but also challenges the audience to determine what is true and what is

not. Sometimes, the audience sees what actually happened. Other times, the facts are less clear.

It’s also made apparent immediately that the two men had a falling-out in 2002 and have not spoken since. The show gives us the outer edges of the puzzle, but the core pieces remain completely unseen.

Part of what makes “True Detective” great is its unpredictability.

It is not a show about the day-today procedures of law enforcers; this isn’t “CSI: Louisiana.” Rather, the Lange murder serves as a gateway into the psyche of two broken men with their own personal issues. They evolve throughout the case — whether for better or for worse has yet to be determined.

There is a unique darkness to “True Detective” that makes it a riveting show. Cohle and Hart aren’t just investigating a murder; rather, they’re diving headfirst into a twisted world. It’s a world where mutilated women are tattooed

with strange symbols, sketches of winged babies appear on the walls of abandoned buildings and works of weird fiction, such as Robert Chambers’ “The King in Yellow,” get frequent homage.

Good TV shows make an audience think beyond plot elements, and “True Detective” does this. It forces audiences to decipher the show’s undertones, making it even more unpredictable.

“True Detective” is not only good, but is also important to the future of television. Every episode of the first season is directed by Cary Fukunaga (“Sin Nombre,” “Jane Eyre”) and written by Nic Pizzolatto. In television, individual episodes are typically written and directed by different people. For example, the final 16-episode season of “Breaking Bad” had 11 different directors and seven different writers.

And while “True Detective” is hardly the first show to incorporate a shorter format (“Luther”, “Top of the Lake”), it may very well be the most popular. Television has long

been thought of as the younger sibling of cinema, but the gap between them is closing quickly.

“True Detective” airs on Sunday nights, which is generally thought of as the best TV night of the week.

And all clues suggest that it is right where it belongs.

‘LEGO Movie’ for ages 8-80

hen I saw “The LEGO Movie,” there was a very good chance that I, a 21-year-old in college, was the youngest person in the movie theater. Now, this was at 9 p.m. on a Sunday, past the bedtime of kids who would appear to be the target demographic of a movie about everyone’s favorite building block (all due respect to Lincoln Logs, and not as much respect to Mega Bloks). The audience was just college students and grown adults, and that’s because “The LEGO Movie” is, undoubtedly, the most fun I’ve had at a movie theater this year, and legitimate fun for all ages.

The plot of the film is almost as much fun to describe as it is to watch. The wizard Vitruvius (voiced by Morgan Freeman) tells of a prophecy in which a person called the “Special” will discover the “Piece of Resistance” that will foil the Kragle superweapon of the evil mastermind Lord Business (voiced by Will Ferrell). As a side note, I don’t know if there will ever be a villain with a better name than “Lord Business.”

Flashing forward, Emmet Brickowoski (voiced by Chris Pratt) is an ordinary construction worker. He follows the instructions

of life (literal instructions on how to live and interact in LEGO society) and mindlessly goes about his day; his favorite TV show is the hit reality drama “Where Are My Pants?” However, his blind enthusiasm comes to a crashing halt when he discovers the “Piece of Resistance” and is anointed the “Special” by the Master Builders: Vitruvius, Wyldstyle (voiced by Elizabeth Banks), Batman (voiced

by Will Arnett) and a host of other colorful characters. The hapless hero must then thwart the diabolical plans of Lord Business.

The plot is actually a fairly standard tale of an unassuming-guy-turned-messiah who is forced to discover the power within himself and defeat evil. You’ve seen it a hundred times before — but not like this. What makes the film work is its humor. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, and its self-referential humor is the main appeal for older audiences. The fourth wall is broken countless times: The movie knows full well that it is “The LEGO Movie” and isn’t afraid to poke fun at itself. The narrative may be a touch slack

at times, but that’s a minor complaint.

That’s not to say, though, that the film has some kind of misplaced cynicism or snarkiness or doesn’t respect its subjects. There is a heart beneath the bricks; ithis is a tale of learning and believing in yourself. As someone who spent many an hour building fantastical creations as a kid, I can attest that the movie captures the sincerity, innocence and just flat-out zaniness of pure creation.

There is a song that the perpetually happy citizens of the LEGO city sing called “Everything Is Awesome!!!”

(That’s three exclamation points, mind you.) The song is performed by indie rock twin sister group Tegan and Sara and comedic trio The Lonely Island. As it happens, “Everything is Awesome!!!” is the perfect phrase to describe “The LEGO Movie,” and adding a fourth exclamation mark wouldn’t be too much, either.

Hockey hosts arch rival, No. 1 Sun Devils JOEY PUTRELO Arizona hockey has already been selected to the ACHA Division I National Championships, but that doesn’t mean the Wildcats can rest until they star on March 6.

This weekend the rivalry between No. 15 Arizona (17-19-0, 8-8-0 Western Collegiate Hockey League) and No. 1 ASU (32-2-0, 14-2-0) on the ice will conclude the 2013-14 regular season for both parties. Friday and Saturday night the puck is scheduled to drop at 7:30 p.m.

“The games are still important in that we want to make sure we’re playing good hockey going into the tournament,” said head coach Sean Hogan. “[The Sun Devils] want to win and show why they’re the top seed in the tournament.”

Three weeks ago the Wildcats earned a split with the Sun Devils at Oceanside Ice Arena in Tempe, Ariz. The 2-1 victory was Arizona’s first over ASU since Feb. 21, 2009.

Arizona men’s basketball at Colorado I’m (a mile) high on Arizona b a s k e t b a l l’s chances to take down Colorado in the Buffs’ own building.

The Wildcats showed a lot of grit against Utah on Wednesday. However, I expect a much closer game than Arizona’s 6957 win on Jan. 23. The UA downgrades a notch, or sometimes five, away from its home crowd.

Arizona men’s basketball at Colorado Coming off of a strong performance against ASU, the Buffs should be a tough matchup for an Arizona team that has proven it’s completely beatable. That said, I look for Aaron Gordon to return to form after scoring only three points against Utah, and a Wildcats win.

Arizona men’s basketball at Colorado Arizona is coming off of a win in Utah, and I believe it will close out this road trip with a win in Boulder.

The Buffaloes beat ASU by nine points on Wednesday, and will be a challenge for the Wildcats. However, if the UA wants to claim the Pac-12 Conference title, it needs to finish the season strong.

Men’s Olympic hockey gold medal After the USA women failed to hold a twogoal lead against Canada, the American men’s squad knows it has to take gold. If any country can beat another at its own game, it’s the U.S. Finland has momentum on its side after an enormous upset of Russia. Regardless, the USA/Canada winner will go on to take the gold.

United States over Finland Accenture Match Play Championship Where’s Tiger and Phil? Oh well, this tournament is still loaded. Because he went to the UA, I know Jim Furyk really wants to win.

I really liked Jimmy Walker, who’s already won twice in 2014, but he lost to Rickie Fowler, so I’m going to go with Bubba Watson, who is coming off of a win.

Men’s Olympic hockey gold medal I’m no hockey expert, but I do love me some Olympics, so I’ve been paying a little attention.

From what I’ve seen, the American offense is rolling, and Finland looks solid, too. But I have to go with history and say our syrup-chugging neighbors to the North will win the gold.

Canada 3, Finland 2 Accenture Match Play Championship It’s too bad Tiger didn’t come to Tucson this year, but the match-play should be interesting as always. With no clear favorite, I’m going with Jason Dufner. Whether he’s taking an hour to perform his pre-shot waggle, or patting his wife’s butt on national television, the Duffman just amuses me, and for that he deserves $1.5 million.

Men’s Olympic hockey gold medal The four remaining teams are evenly matched going into this weekend’s gold medal game. The winner will come down to star players and dominant performances. My pick to win the gold is team Canada, led by one of the best players on the planet, Sidney Crosby, and a proven winner in Roberto Luongo at goalie.

Canada 5, Finland 3 Accenture Match Play Championship It doesn’t feature any of the big name players in golf, so I am going with experience and picking Ernie Els to win it. I don’t have a whole lot of reason in picking Els other than the fact that he has been on the tour for some time and is due for a win.

Winless Alcorn State comes to Hi Corbett Rose Aly Valenzuela Coming off of a loss to Utah Valley, Arizona baseball will host Alcorn State this weekend at Hi Corbett Field.

The three-game series was scheduled to begin Friday night, but it was postponed due to traveling changes by Alcorn State.

Senior pitcher James Farris (1-0) will be back in action on Saturday for Arizona (3-2) after pitching 7.2 innings and a total of 100 pitches during the season opener last Friday.

“I’m seeing a lot of good things pitchingwise,” said head coach Andy Lopez. “And on the other side, I’m also seeing some other things that make me go, ‘OK, that might not be the right individual to put in that situation.’”

The starting pitcher for Saturday’s second game will be sophomore Cody Hamlin (1-0), and Sunday will be junior Tyler Crawford (0-1).

Lopez said junior Tyler Parmenter, sophomores Xavier Borde and Cody Moffett and freshmen Bobby Dalbec and Morgan Earman are also all ready to contribute with the pitching staff if Arizona gets into trouble in pitching.

The rest of the defensive starting lineup is not yet set. Lopez and the Arizona coaching staff have been moving players around in order to find the right spot for them.

No matter what the lineup is, Dalbec said, he thinks his team is ready for another win.

“I feel like with our lineup, we always have a chance to come back and win,” Dalbec said.

Arizona has not faced Alcorn State (0-5)
