JT’s latest vision is 20/20 After another reinvention, Justin Timberlake is almost unrecognizable from his days in ‘N Sync. His new album has few misses and transcends traditional track length, breezing past the seven-minute mark to become more like symphony suites.

emember when ‘N Sync ruled the world? Neither does Justin Timberlake, whose newest record The 20/20 Experience has more in common with Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and other mid-career reinvention records than the pop hooks that made him famous.

Last time we heard from Timberlake, he was already transforming his brand of pop music into something that required an entirely new portmanteau to describe: “SexyBack.”

Yet in terms of artistry, The 20/20 Experience outpaces even the wildest moments of FutureSex/LoveSounds.

Except for single “Suit & Tie,” every song on here features sprawling soundscapes courtesy of Timberlake’s co-producers Timbaland and Jerome “J-Roc” Harmon, often blowing past the seven-minute mark with tracks that function less like pop songs and more like suites in a symphony.

Rather than complicating things, Timberlake’s new long-form approach actually works quite well in tracks like “Strawberry Bubblegum,” where a jazzy coda of electric keyboard and fuzzy synthesizers rescues the floundering first half of the song.

Stellar opener “Pusher Love Girl” features a similar shift, moving the slowburning bounce of the first five minutes into a vocoder outro that somehow improves on an already-fantastic track.

Timberlake also totally sells the Afrobeat of “Let the Groove Get In,” which ultimately plays better than most Western appropriations of world rhythms do.

It’s tricks like these that make 20/20 something of a standout for Timberlake,

Of course, one could argue that for an artist like Timberlake, who has remained squarely in the public consciousness for all of his adult life, it may not be easy to refresh his image.

For all its leaps and bounds, 20/20 still has enough filler to indicate that Timberlake might not be entirely ready to let go of his blue-eyed soulfulness.

Next to stupendous tracks like “Pusher Love Girl” and lounge-song extraordinaire “Spaceship Coupe,” hit single “Suit & Tie” sounds downright lazy, as it doesn’t quite manage to shed the tiresome pop tropes of Timberlake’s past.

Other small problems persist as well, such as the odd “Don’t Hold The Wall,” which attempts to pair the nightmarish atmosphere of a Frank Ocean or The Weeknd song with Timberlake’s boyish and lighthearted vocals.

As much as Timberlake has made a name for himself in a surprisingly lucrative acting career and as everyone’s favorite Saturday Night Live host, that fun, anything-goes attitude can’t quite

sell the gravity of “Don’t Hold The Wall”’s harrowing drug narrative.

The saving grace of “Don’t Hold The Wall” comes in the form of an ecstasyfueled end that reiterates just how often 20/20 favors its production over Timberlake’s presence.

Its few misses aside, 20/20 does justice to Timberlake’s fame as a solo artist.

In typical showman fashion, Timberlake makes sure that the end of his album plays as well as its beginning,

20 years, 10 albums later, Low going steady Alex Whelan The best thing about Low is that it’s never gone away. Much has been made of the anniversaries that The Invisible Way represents for the band — a 10th studio album, 20 years as a band and the ongoing marriage of songwriters Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker — but there’s little indication in the music that The Invisible Way is anything more than a typical Low record.

The stunning harmonies and deft guitar work of “Amethyst” are exactly the kind of things one might find on Low’s 1993 debut, give or take some electric amplifiers.

Elsewhere, songs like opener “Plastic Cup” make welcome additions to the Low catalogue for any number of reasons. In “Plastic Cup,” Sparhawk and Parker’s lyrical skills shine, beginning with the line “You could always count on your friends to get you high,” which sounds far more tragic when sung in harmony over acoustic chord progressions. In fact, Low is in top lyrical form on The Invisible Way, with highlight “Holy Ghost” getting in great lines like “feeds my passion for transcendence … makes me wish I was empty.”

The 20/20 Experience is proof enough that Timberlake has earned his reputation as one of the last superstars of 21st century pop music.

Whether The 20/20 Experience Part 2 really comes out in November like he promises, or it takes another seven years, it’ll definitely be worth the wait.

burgeoning genre, nowadays it seems like the band is quite comfortable with its past melodic achievements and content to write harmonious dirges without an electric instrument in sight.

As with any Low album, the true gems stand out due to their melodic and vocal beauty, the elegiac “Clarence White” among them. Led by Sparhawk’s plaintive wailing, the song seems like it might collapse into a spiritual dirge at any moment. One doesn’t necessarily turn to slowcore for energy, but there was a time when Low was truly a formidable and adventurous band, and tracks like “Plastic Cup” and “Clarence White” serve as reminders of those early days.

Parker’s more patient vocals are still the highlight they’ve always been, as evidenced by her soulful croon in “Four Score.” The album’s most affective moment surprisingly comes not in its quietest stretch, but as Sparhawk’s acoustic ballad “On My Own” transitions into a distortion-laden march to the grave. As soft as Low might want to get sometimes, sparks fly when the duo plugs in.

However, as enjoyable as Low’s familiar style is, The Invisible Way begins to drag by the end.

The end result is slightly forgettable, if morethan-adequate, Low album.

THE FOURTH AVENUE STREET FAIR has something for audiences of all ages and interests.. Whether you’re a food enthusiast, music junkie or just out for a stroll, the street fair delivers a variety of entertainment up and down the entire avenue.

ucson’s Fourth Avenue has a penchant for all things eccentric, artsy and even abnormal, and twice a year, things get even quirkier than usual.

With the return of the biannual Tucson Fourth Avenue Street Fair this weekend from Friday to Sunday, newcomers and seasoned street fair visitors alike are invited to experience Fourth Avenue as Tucson’s largest arts venue.

“I call it ‘the street of dreams,’” says Kurt Tallis, events and marketing director for the Fourth Avenue Merchants Association. “The street fair is the engine that makes Fourth Avenue possible.”

The street fair been offering this colorful chaos for visitors to feast their eyes on since 1970, and this weekend is no different. An estimated 100 new vendors will join 300 Tucson natives and returning artists in displaying their wares this weekend.

Though the street fair falls just short of an artsy madhouse, attendees should not be daunted.

Food

“If you want it on a stick, we’ve got it,” Tallis said. “Blow off your diet.”

But really, with more than 30 food vendors, the opportunities to indulge are endless.

“The kettle corn — I have an obsession with that,” said Ginger Lunt, a sales associate at Creations on Fourth Avenue.

The street fair functions as a beer garden too, offering six different locations to booze up while you walk around. No one goes thirsty at the street fair.

The street fair allows visitors to discover both local and visiting merchants without leaving this single street.

“There’s a lot of really cool artwork,” Lunt says. “You can get some pretty cool prints.”

Not to be missed: - Klickitat Pottery: earthenware pottery, inexpensive - Desert Vintage: high-quality clothing, slightly pricey - Rustic Candle Company: hand poured candles, in earthy tones and fragrances - Creations: local women’s fashion (there is always a sale) - Creative Ventures Craft Mall (side lot): local stained glass artists and jewelry makers

The fair is free, meaning it is perfectly acceptable to stroll down the street and gawk at all the colorful personas on display. Just, you know, be subtle about it.

Music

Two stages, located at central locations on Fourth Avenue, offer a variety of free entertainment. The Community Stage North, located on Fourth Avenue and Fifth Street, will host dance performances, music and variety acts throughout the weekend.

The Main Stage South, on Fourth Avenue and Seventh Street, will feature professional music groups.

Not to be missed: - Tucson Magnet High School Jovert Steel Drums: Friday/Saturday at 10 a.m., Finding parking at the Street Fair is difficult, but not impossible. There are numerous Community Stage North parking garages both downtown and near the UA that offer daily parking with rates from - Zuzi! Dance: Sunday at 11 a.m., Community Stage North $5-$15, depending on metered time. Also, neighboring residential areas often open - Stefan George: Friday at noon, Main Stage South spaces to visitors, at varying prices. The bus is a cheaper means of getting to the fair, and - Electric Blankets: Saturday at 2 p.m., Main Stage South there is a free bicycle valet as well. Walking, however, is highly encouraged.

it. The cow is better known as “Oreo,” as it was named by two classes of 3-year-olds at the Catalina Methodist Day School where the Water Harvesting Committee first used the Water Cow to educate the public about water harvesting, Personeus said.

You don’t have to be a kid or a parent to get involved with the farm. Every Monday, volunteers are invited to help out from 8 a.m. to noon, Sparks said. On “U-Pick” Tuesdays, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., participants are able to pick fresh, organic produce and purchase it. Plus, three paid internships are offered to current UA students interested in working at the farm in the summer.

Tucson Village Farm is about getting everyone in the community involved in healthy, local, sustainable eating practices. So go ahead — dig in.

But it’s El Guero Canelo that has the truly prize-winning Mexican food. Featured on Travel Channel’s “Food Wars,” the Sonoran dog is equal parts artery-clogging and delicious.

Head over to The Hub if you’re looking to show your friends a more upscale dining

experience. The atmosphere is lively, but it’s Hub’s ice cream parlor that really wows. Catch up with your best friend over a bowl of Thin Mint ice cream.

If your visitors hail from the Midwest or the East Coast, it’s an unwritten rule that you have to take them to In-N-Out. Let them sink their teeth into a double-double burger and experience the decadence that most of us locals take for granted.

Now, you probably haven’t thought about bar-hopping on Fourth Avenue since your 21st birthday. Despite the fact that it’s a freak show, it allows you to do a lot with your friends in a little time.

Everyone knows the layout of Fourth, which means you’re familiar with the best happy hour deals, as well as the best places to eat when the drunchies inevitably set in.

For those under 21, take your friends to one of the many the pool parties set for this spring.

The Seasons, Campus Crossings at Star Pass and The Standards are foolproof options guaranteed to prove to your friends that the UA is the cooler school.

Elliott’s in-house vodka hits hard

Elliott’s on Congress will be celebrating its one-year anniversary on May 10, which is a feat in and of itself considering the downtown streetcar construction it’s had to suffer through.

Though Elliott’s owner Billy Elliott said construction was frustrating and slowed business, the fences have now come down.

The challenges the restaurant has faced over the past year will pay off when the streetcar begins delivering people right to its front door.

Wildcats start conference play EVAN ROSENFELD After dropping three out of five games last weekend in Fullerton, Calif., Arizona’s No. 16 softball team returns home to Rita Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium on Saturday to host the No. 17 Washington Huskies in the first series of conference play, which runs through Monday.

The Wildcats and Huskies both participated in last weekend’s Judi Garman Classic, with Washington going 3-2 and Arizona going 2-3. The Wildcats are currently undefeated at home with a perfect 13-0 record to complement their 20-8 overall record this season.

“We want some victories,” head coach Mike Candrea said. “That’s the bottom line. Our biggest goal is to improve each week and put more things together, so it would be great for us to come out, have good pitching performances, supply some offense and play good defense.”

Arizona hopes to capitalize on its offense this weekend and looks to sophomores Hallie Wilson and Chelsea Goodacre and freshmen Lauren Young and Mandie Perez to provide enough runs to support the Wildcats’ pitching.

Wilson has hit three home runs in her last eight games, after hitting just two in her previous 76 career games. She batted .444 with one home run in three games against Washington last season.

After opening the season just 2-of-22, Goodacre has become a force to be reckoned with, composing a 21-game hitting streak where she has hit .544 with 31 hits in 57 at-bats.

She leads the team in three categories and is batting .418 this season with 10 home runs and 32 RBI. She has hit .647 with six

home runs and 21 RBI so far in March.

“I’m feeling pretty good about the way I’m hitting right now,” Goodacre said. “It’s kind of nice to see all of my hard work paying off, and hopefully it will continue into Pac-12 play.”

Young homered in last weekend’s tournament and hit six home runs in her last eight games, after hitting just two in her first 20 games as a Wildcat.

After beginning the season with four hits in her first 28 at-bats, Perez has finally settled into a groove and hit 14-of-34 since. She hit .400 in last weekend’s tournament and said she is looking forward to this weekend’s action.

“I feel so much better now than earlier in the season,” Perez said.

“I think we are going to come out strong. We have been working hard and touching up on our weaknesses.”

The Huskies will come prepared, boasting a pitching rotation with — Mike Candrea, UA head coach a team ERA of 1.98. Although Washington does not usually overpower its opponents with its offense, the Wildcats should remember that the Huskies possess a .352 team batting average and a .447 OBP with 30 stolen bases.

In the teams’ past matchups, Arizona defeated Washington in 60 of 84 games and five of their last seven meetings, including two of three last year in Seattle.

“They’re a good team,” Candrea said. “They have quite a few people who have returned. All of their pitching is back, and if you look at the stats, they look like they’ve gotten a little bit better. We are going to have to make the plays when we need to, make the pitches when we need to and get the hits when we need to.”

Sixth-seeded Arizona tops Belmont, goes 81-64 in its first NCAA tournament game 21 points and hit three 3-pointers. Kerron Johnson, Clark’s backcourt partner, added 22 points and two 3-pointers. But outside of those two, the Bruins shot 3-of-14 from long range.

Late in the second half, though, Arizona started taking its foot off the pedal, and Belmont capitalized.

Starting at the five minute, 35 second mark, Clark hit a three, then J.J. Mann stole the ball and hit a trey of his own, bringing Belmont within 11 points at 64-53.

While Arizona might have slowed down on defense, it did no such thing on the other side of the ball.

The Wildcats outscored Belmont 17-10 the rest of the way, but more impressive was their otherworldly second-half efficiency: Arizona shot 67.9 percent (19-of-28) from the field and 62.5 percent (5-of-8) from long range and scored 49 points.

“We played the score,” Mark Lyons said, “but it’s hard. They were fighting for their life. Of course they’re going to play a lot harder than us, but we stayed with it and still pulled out the win. It wasn’t as close as they wanted it to be.”

It wasn’t close, despite Tarczewski and Solomon Hill’s foul trouble and Arizona’s 16 turnovers and the 22 points Belmont scored off of them.

Hill committed three fouls in the first half and never really found his groove, finishing with nine points, four rebounds, one assist and three turnovers.

But it didn’t matter in the end.

Now the Wildcats move on to the next round to face Harvard on Saturday.

“We’re very excited to still be in the tournament,” Miller said.

The way the game opened, it’s a wonder the 11th-seed Belmont became such a trendy pick to upset the sixth-seed Wildcats.

After the tip and a few passes, Nick Johnson found freshman center Kaleb Tarczewski down low. Tarczewski attacked the basket, went to the free throw line and hit both free throws.

Then Tarczewski hustled back on defense and blocked Trevor Noack’s attempt at a layup.

The tone was set for the game, and Arizona never trailed in a commanding 8164 second-round NCAA Tournament win at EnergySolutions Arena. “[Tarczewski] knew he was the difference in the game,” said point guard Mark Lyons, who scored a game-high 23 points.

While everyone was focusing on Belmont’s sweet-shooting reputation, they overlooked the Wildcats’ size advantage.

The Bruins’ tallest contributors — Blake Jenkins and Trevor Noack — are 6-foot-7.

“I guess the stat that’s overwhelming is rebounding,” head coach Sean Miller said.

“That shows the effort level we played with.”

The trio of 7-foot Tarczewski, 6-foot-10 Grant Jerrett and 6-foot-8 Brandon Ashley outrebounded Belmont all on its own. The three had 21 rebounds between them and Arizona had 44 as a team, while the Bruins grabbed 18 boards. Arizona also outscored Belmont 36-18 in the paint.

“Every time we got the ball in the post, something great happened,” guard/forward Kevin Parrom said.

Tarczewski finished with 12 points on a perfect shooting night (5-of-5), along with eight rebounds and one block, before fouling out with three minutes to go.

“We knew we had the size advantage,” Tarczewski said. “The guards did a great job of handing me the ball in post where we could score and make plays out of it. We did that really well tonight.”

Manufacturing runs, though, has separated the No. 12 team in the country from the defending national champions.

Arizona ranks in the top 20 in

many national offensive categories and is fifth in hits in the country. But those hits haven’t always translated into runs when needed. Oregon, though only ranked in a couple top national categories, still manages to win games by moving runners around the bases through sacrifice bunts and flies and timely doubles.

Defensively, the Ducks limit runs by having a .987 fielding percentage, the third-highest in the country.

Oregon’s discipline and execution of minor details have helped it compensate for many of the skills it lacks. However, there have been times this season when the Ducks struggled against an explosive offense and pitching staff.

Earlier this season, Oregon lost two out of three both to No. 2 Vanderbilt and on the road to thenNo. 17 ranked Cal State Fullerton.

If the Wildcats want to follow in the path of the Commodores and Titans, they will need to see tough performances from their three weekend starters, something they’ve lacked for much of the season.

ALT LAKE CITY— Arizona against Harvard: not exactly the matchup any reasonable person expected.

But that’s March Madness.

Expecting anything less than the unexpected is just plain naive.

On Saturday, the Wildcats will take on Harvard at 3:10 p.m. The game will be televised on TNT. After the 14-seeded Crimson pulled off a stunning 68-62 upset of the third-seeded New Mexico Lobos, I immediately began searching for Harvard’s locker room to gather player reactions.

Right when I was about to ask a security guard if he knew where it was, I heard a loud roar to my right, followed by a person shouting at the top of his lungs “Let’s [f------] go!”

I safely assumed that it wasn’t a New Mexico player.

“Pandemonium,” said guard Christian Webster, describing the post-game scene in the locker room.

“Jubilation,” said Wesley Saunders, a guard.

“I don’t know any other words for that,” added guard Laurent Rivard, with a laugh.

The assumption was that Arizona, a six seed, would face the Lobos for a chance to advance to the Sweet 16 in Los Angeles.

“Whoever wins HarvardNew Mexico is gonna be a great team,” Arizona forward Kevin Parrom said before the HarvardUNM game. “We gotta bring it defensively, or we’re going home.

I think everyone understands that.”

It would have been the Lobos’ first-ever Sweet 16 appearance; instead it was Harvard’s first-ever tournament win.

high seven rebounds. “Nobody thought this was going to be the upset. Everybody had other upsets on their bracket, I’m sure.

Everybody looked past Harvard.

So it’s just amazing for us.”

Odds are, unless you can claim to be from Cambridge, Mass., you don’t know much about the Crimson.

“I mentioned to our players that people root for underdogs, but they follow top dogs,” head coach Tommy Amaker said.

Here are the facts about this particular underdog.

at Michigan for six years before being hired by Harvard in 2007.

Amaker has a career record of 287-203, and this marks his third NCAA tournament appearance.

Two of those came at Harvard — this year’s and last’s — and mark the Crimson’s first appearances since 1946.

“He’s given us a huge boost,” Smith said. “He told us to lay it all out there, and he’s always had faith in us. How much he’s behind us, he really believes in this team.”

The coach

Two of Crimson’s best players — guards Wesley Saunders and Siyani Chambers — are underclassmen.

Saunders, a sophomore, is the Crimson’s leading scorer, getting 16.5 points per game along with 4.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.9
