Kevin McCall delivers on ‘Definition’ Casey Lewandrowski

P

roducer and Grammy-nominated songwriter Kevin McCall teaches the right way to create quality panty-dropping music with Definition, his newest R&B-style mixtape. Move over, R. Kelly and Trey Songz, because Definition is the new go-to playlist for getting it on.

The Weeknd’s Trilogy is arguably the most sensual music currently on the airwaves. While McCall’s voice differs from the hazy whisper of Abel Tesfaye, McCall’s sound is innovative, yet still holds true to the classic origins of R&B. McCall’s buttery voice will make listeners melt as they work their way through 13 tracks of swelteringly sexy music. The combination of his impressive range, suave sound and tantalizing lyrics will ensure you listen to the tape in its entirety, and repeatedly.

While other R&B artists mostly sing their lyrics, McCall draws from his varied talents and raps as well. This combination switches up the pace of the music and adds bravado to the soft sound that rhythm and blues usually provides.

McCall manages to avoid being excessively crude, even though his lyrics are graphic and lines like “Legs up I’m’a handle that / if it’s good baby then I’m’a double back” will undoubtedly

make more timid listeners blush.

Definition offers a wide range of emotional and sexual levels. Less intense tracks such as “Turn Me On” use a playful beat and rapped verses, combined with catchy bars ideal for grinding up on a stranger in the club.

In contrast, a majority of tracks, like “Anticipation,” have lyrics like, “Imagine what it’s going to feel like when I finally give you what you’ve been waiting for / ain’t had it yet but I already want more” that will induce a weakin-the-knees feeling in even the most jaded of listeners.

McCall’s songs were not made for one night stands or quick flings — they were made for long, sweaty nights filled with passion, and his lyricism does more than just hint at that.

With the exception of “Party City,” featuring Travis Porter, and “Sweetest Joy,” featuring 2 Chainz, every song on this tape will get fans in the mood to get between the sheets.

But McCall’s deviations from the strictly sexual won’t disappoint audiences. Even when he strays from his standard R&B equation, it’s still decently produced rap music.

The only disappointment listeners might feel is when the slow jams stop — Definition is the kind of mixtape that leaves your mouth watering for more.

ART uncovers Shakespeare’s ‘Cymbeline’ Arizona Repertory Theatre brings 17th-century work into World War I era with stunning set, versatile performances from large cast CECELIA MARSHALL

FASHION MEETS FILM UA sophomore brings music, couture and cinematography together for his own take on visual arts Erin DeSoto

P

eter Calvillo, a film and television sophomore, is pushing the boundaries of today’s concept of visual art with his work in fashion film.

If you’re unfamiliar with the genre, don’t feel bad. Fashion films have yet to reach mainstream audiences, but they are all the rage in the underground fashion and music industries.

“A fashion film is a combination of music, clothes and film … It brings all the aspects of the visual arts together,” Calvillo said.

Calvillo has produced one fashion film so far, titled “Gravity,” and is currently working on his next piece.

The outfits for “Gravity” were purchased at Buffalo Exchange and the music is from one of his favorite electronic bands, Proxy, but Calvillo plans to begin designing his own clothes and mixing his own music for his upcoming films. He said that his main goal with “Gravity” was to get the hang of producing a fashion film from scratch.

“The first video was mainly just to set up a start of what I wanted to do and get the feel of how to work everything,” he said.

“Gravity” may have been intended as a foundation for Calvillo’s later work, but it certainly isn’t lacking in ingenuity.

“My inspiration for ‘Gravity’ was the way clothes have their own personality when they move through space, and aren’t just lifeless,” Calvillo said.

So what can viewers expect from his next fashion film?

Calvillo said his second piece, which is still in the early stages of development, will be more political than his previous work.

“It’s about gun control,” Calvillo said. “I’m going to touch on masculinity and femininity, and the militant aspect of things. It’s about people’s thoughts on how guns define their strength.”

The film is slated for release in early April, Calvillo said.

With assistance from his friend Connie Lee, a prepharmacy sophomore, Calvillo will be designing all the clothes for this film himself and producing his own music, making the entire film an inhouse effort, the culmination of Calvillo’s talents.

“I have been working on making my own music for a — Peter Calvillo, while now; it’s just hard on filmmaker a college student budget,” Calvillo said. “I’m really inspired by Lady Gaga — she’s fucking awesome — and Nick Knight — he’s the fashion film master. But Grace Jones is who really inspired me for this next film.”

The music for his new film has been inspired by the electronic house group Autoerotique. Calvillo said he is drawn to electronic music because of the rhythm, yet is open to anything that encourages inspiration.

“I’m still trying to define my style, but [fashion films] are what I love doing,” he said. “I want to do music and eventually perform. I’m going to make a big production of myself.”

DHOP is back and bigger than ever K.C. Libman When it comes to drunken late-night food on the weekends, students’ choices are severely limited. There’s the ubiquitous Mexican food stands strewn throughout the city, Jimmy John’s or Mama’s Hawaiian BarB-Cue, and that’s really it.

However, Friday night there’s one more option to choose from, and it’s for the carb fanatic in all of us: Delta Delta Delta sorority is hosting its DHOP all-you-can-eat pancakes event once again.

For the uninitiated, DHOP is something of a tradition. Once a semester, cabs flock to Tri Delta’s house on Second Street, unloading intoxicated passengers who are graciously welcomed into the house by the women of Tri Delta. For $5, patrons can gorge themselves on warm pancakes bathed in syrup and leave Tri Delta more than satisfied.

DHOP, however, is more than just pancakes — it’s a fundraiser with 100 percent of proceeds going to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to benefit pediatric cancer research.

Donations of pancake batter, juice and syrup allow Tri Delta to give back as much as it does, but there’s also a lot of manpower that goes into DHOP. “This year, we’re implementing four shifts, with a setup crew and a cleanup crew, and some girls stay on as just cooks,” said Claire Rudder, president of Tri Delta’s Phi Beta chapter at the UA and a junior studying bilingual elementary education.

While impromptu singalongs and random dance parties with drunk patrons always go on at DHOP, Rudder said there’s been nothing quite like their turnout last semester.

“It was just the sheer number of people that we had,” Rudder said. “As much as we were trying to prepare and set up different ways to get the pancakes to people faster, our whole house was packed with people, and we weren’t quite prepared for how big it got.”

Tri Delta is hoping that Friday’s crowd will be just as big, if not bigger.

Each DHOP, Tri Delta attempts to raise between $5,000 and $10,000. It met its goal last semester by raising around $8,000.

If that’s any indication of how tonight’s event will go, then it’s definitely going to be busy, and it’s up to the patrons to help out in their own way.

“If people could be just as patient as they can, that’d be great,” Rudder said. “We’re making the pancakes as fast as we can, but there’s always more on the way.”

No matter what your plans are Friday night, DHOP’s worth checking out. Even if pancakes aren’t your thing, you can buy a DHOP T-shirt or simply donate to St. Jude’s. Either way, you’re giving back and getting something in return — whether that be a stack of pancakes, the feeling of supporting a wonderful charity or both.

“It’s a staple of the Greek Life philanthropies,” said DJ Beaver, a civil engineering senior. “It’s a great way to finish up your night of partying, and it’s for a great cause.”

Something not so sweet restaurant review

Something Sweet Dessert Lounge is a fun, casual dessert eatery and a great meeting place to catch up with friends.

As its name suggests, this restaurant offers sweet treats as well as coffees, teas, hot chocolate and soda fountain beverages.

The menu is a sweet-aholic’s dream with pages of pies, ice cream, shakes and cakes. From raspberry swirl cheesecake to apple pie to an espresso torte, Something Sweet’s selection is diverse.

The restaurant also offers savory foods like soups, salads, sandwiches and melts, and with a whole shelf full of games like chess and Jenga, it’s easy to hang around with friends for a while.

On the surface, this laidback lounge seems like a perfect place for everyone, from the dessert connoisseur to the average student with a sweet tooth.

But if you think it sounds too good to be true, you’re right.

Three of the four times I visited Something Sweet, I was completely disappointed with my dessert.

The idea of an eatery centered entirely on desserts always made me want to give it another chance, but no longer. In nearly all of my experiences, the food was mediocre and tasted like prepackaged freezer fare.

The peanut butter cake, simply a chocolate cake topped with peanut butter frosting, was dry and bland.

I found myself just nibbling at the frosting, which was the only thing this dessert had going for it.

However, Something Sweet staff said that more than 40 of the desserts are, in fact, made from scratch in-house with ingredients from various local farms, Shamrock Farms and Costco.

Recently, I ordered a blueberry pie, one of the special pies that is not normally offered. I was anticipating a warm pastry with flaky crust and fresh, gooey blueberries oozing from the sides. But the pie I received had an oddly chewy crust filled with dry blueberries in a hard, gelatinous blueberry substance that looked like it had come from a preserves jar.

The Boston cream pie is a better bet. The fudge frosting was rich and decadent, the cake was fairly moist and the custardy cream filling was a nice addition that gave the cake a soft, meltin-your-mouth texture.

The mixed berry cobbler, on the other hand, was the most disappointing of all. Cobblers should be a pleasing concoction of warm, soft fruit in a thick compote with a cake or pielike crust. The crust can be on both the top and bottom or just on the top, and whether it’s cake-like or pie-like is a matter of personal preference.

Either way, this baked dessert should be warm when you receive it, ready to fall apart as soon as you dig your fork in.

The mixed berry cobbler I received, however, was a meager dish of berries with a thin sauce and a bit of powdered mixture sprinkled over the top. The powdered mixture was likely a typical streusel topping: flour, sugar and maybe a tiny bit of butter and cinnamon. The berries themselves may have been cooked, but this was far from a cobbler. I had to ask for some extra streusel topping just to add a little more substance to the dish.

This is not to say that you shouldn’t ever go to Something Sweet. It’s a great place to have a get-together with friends and the restaurant does offer some fun treats — just bear in mind that it’s no top-tier bakery.

Arizona’s pitching ‘can’t be sloppy’ in weekend series luke davis Ten games into the 2013 season, No. 10 Arizona (8-2) is off to almost the exact same start as last year’s national championship team.

Friday, the Wildcats will look to keep up with last year’s standards as they begin a three-game home series with the University of San Francisco (4-5).

The Dons were swept by Cal Poly in their season-opening series but have won three out of their last five, including their most recent 2-1 victory over the same San Jose State team that Arizona swept last weekend.

Even though the Wildcats took care of business last weekend, outscoring the Spartans 32-15 in the three-game series, head coach Andy Lopez wasn’t satisfied with his pitching staff’s toughness and overall performance.

The two-time national champion coach said he would like to see his Wildcat pitchers play with more consistency throughout the game, no matter the score. A lack of consistency can be a sign of poor effort, and that would most likely result in a loss against a tougher opponent, according to Lopez.

“Missed location of pitches,” Lopez said about his pitching staff’s performance after last Saturday’s 15-4 win over San Jose State. “We can’t be sloppy when we’re out there on the mound. We shouldn’t be

walking guys with six, seven, eightplus leads.”

Arizona will start juniors Konner Wade (1-0) and James Farris (2-0) tonight and Saturday, respectively.

Redshirt junior Stephen Manthei will throw on Sunday after a strong 7.2 innings of work last Sunday in the Wildcats’ 9-4 win over the Spartans.

This weekend, the Arizona pitching staff will face a lackluster Dons team that has a batting average of .252 and has only scored 38 runs in nine games.

Arizona’s bullpen has been up and down so far this season. Reliever Augey Bill and closer Mathew Troupe have been the only two Wildcats to be consistent when called in for duty. Freshman Tyger Talley and sophomore Tyler Crawford have made good appearances, but have also had sloppy ones.

That being said, Lopez will not be afraid to call upon one of his many bullpen pitchers this weekend if necessary.

Arizona’s offense has kept up with last season’s standards. In 65 games last season, the national champions averaged 7.35 runs per game. So far, through 10 games in 2013, the Wildcats have averaged 9.7. As the season progresses and the competition gets tougher, Lopez expects that number to decrease slightly.

But third baseman Brandon Dixon doesn’t think it will dip too

much.

“I think with our lineup we can get back into any game. I don’t expect us to have many one-run games,” Dixon said, referring to the Wildcats’ 3-1 loss to Utah Valley this past Tuesday.

Dixon is one of the key reasons the Wildcats have been able to average so many runs early in the season.

The first year everyday starter has reached base in every game this season and leads Arizona with a .406 batting average and a .688 slugging percentage.

Dixon hits fourth in the lineup, behind center fielder Johnny Field and ahead of second baseman Trent Gilbert. The three have a combined batting average of .370 and 38 RBI. In total, the trio is responsible for 42 percent of Arizona’s 97 runs so far.

But Lopez still wants to see his offense hit better and more to Hi Corbett’s large dimensions.

San Francisco brings an average pitching staff to Tucson this weekend, one that may struggle to keep the Wildcats from scoring early. Two of the Dons’ three starting pitchers have earned run averages over 10.00.

This weekend, Arizona looks to keep improving, as there is now less than a month until Pac-12 conference play begins. But in order to have a valiant showing against the Dons, Lopez will need to see more from his pitching staff.

After going 2-3 last weekend, some home cooking may be just what Arizona softball needs, as it hosts the Wildcat Invitational on home turf this weekend.

No. 21 Arizona (10-5) will host its second and final regular season tournament this Friday through Sunday, welcoming Portland State, UC Riverside and Boston University for the Wildcat Invitational, a threeday, 10-game tourney.

“It’s always good to be home,” head coach Mike Candrea said. “We look forward to playing at Hillenbrand in front of our crowd, and it beats traveling, that’s for sure.”

Last weekend in Palm Springs, Calif., Arizona lost 5-0 to No. 1 Oklahoma, 6-0 to Ohio State and 3-0 to No. 13 LSU. The Wildcats beat Long Beach State 4-3 and Loyola Marymount 5-3.

“It’s been a tough week and I think we’re all ready for it to be the weekend again so we can prove to Coach that we’re ready and we’re going to play our best,” sophomore first baseman Hallie Wilson said.

The Wildcats only scored nine runs in the five games last week, despite getting 27 hits and drawing 15 walks.

Arizona hit just .128 with runners in scoring position.

Arizona drove in runs one out of nine times with a runner on third and had fewer than two outs last week.

“We’ve tried to raise the bar a little

bit in practice, a little more focus, and talked a lot about having a plan at the plate,” Candrea said. “So we’ve kind of changed the structure of our BP and things and we’ll see how it works.”

Friday, Arizona opens the tournament with UC Riverside (5-9) at 4 p.m., followed by a 6 p.m. game with Boston (1-4).

Candrea said that UCR has a new coaching staff but is well-prepared.

“I think it will definitely be a good challenge for us,” Candrea said. “I don’t think we can even worry about opponents right now. We just need to worry about ourselves.”

This is the 18th Wildcat Invitational.

It started in 1988 and then was staged every year from 1996 to 2011. Arizona is 84-3 all-time in the Wildcat Invite, and its last loss was 2-1 to Creighton in 2008. Arizona is also 84-3 in its other tournament, the Hillenbrand Invitational.

On Saturday, the Wildcats face BU again at 4 p.m., followed by Portland State (4-11) at 6 p.m.

“Boston U, I don’t know much about them,” Candrea said.

“Hopefully they’ve been in the snow for a while, get out here and don’t know what the dirt looks like.

But they’ve had some tradition of postseason play.”

After back-to-back heartbreaking losses to rival Arizona State, the Wildcats (12-15, 4-12 Pac-12) will look to take advantage of their final two games at home to improve their record and move up in the conference standings.

Currently sitting in 10th place in the conference standings, the Wildcats are hosting ninth-place USC (8-19, 5-11) tonight and third-place, No. 17 UCLA (21-6, 12-4) on Sunday.

With an almost 0 percent chance of getting an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, Arizona will need to win, or at least have a strong showing in the conference tournament, in order to reach the big dance.

Not only are these the final two games of the season and two important games for conference standings, they will also be the last games seniors Davellyn Whyte and Cheshi Poston play as Wildcats in McKale Center.

Sunday, the two will be honored for their accomplishments before the game. While both have achieved a lot at Arizona, neither of the seniors have made a trip to the NCAA tournament.

As her final season comes to a close, it’s clear that Whyte has left a lasting imprint on the program. On Feb. 19, Whyte finished a double overtime loss to the Sun Devils with 31 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists, the first triple-double in Arizona women’s basketball history.

Just five days later, against the same ASU team, Whyte finished the game with 18 points to give her 2,007 for her career, making her only the second woman in Wildcat history to score over 2,000 career points. Adia Barnes

(1995-98), who scored 2,237 points in her four years in Tucson, was the first.

Also in that game, the point forward fell just three assists shy of another tripledouble. Friday, Whyte will be honored before the game for her 2,000 career points.

Since Whyte became a Wildcat in 2009, she has led the team in scoring and improved her season total every year.

However, as of right now, Whyte is not on pace to surpass her 2011-12 total of 544 points. Whyte needed 684 points this year to pass Barnes’ career record. The 684 points would have been the most points scored in a single season by an Arizona women’s basketball player as well, a record also set by Barnes.

But Whyte has always been more worried about the team’s accomplishments than her own. Entering their final season, Whyte, Poston and head coach Niya Butts made it clear that getting the seniors to their first NCAA tournament was one of the most important goals for the season.

With just two games left on the schedule, it will be up to the team to help the two graduating Wildcats accomplish that goal.

Throughout the season, Butts has talked about how the team hasn’t made or finished plays when it mattered most.

This weekend, the Wildcats have an opportunity to end the season strong as they host a Trojan team that is currently riding an eight-game losing streak and a nationally ranked Bruins team that could potentially face Arizona in the first or second round of the conference tournament as it did last season.

The Wildcats upset the Bruins 61-57 in the first round before falling to ASU in the second round.
