Patterson resigns from House By Luke Money DAILY WILDCAT

Several weeks into a far-reaching ethics complaint about his conduct as a legislator, Rep. Daniel Patterson has officially resigned from the House of Representatives. The House Ethics Committee voted unanimously to remove Patterson from office on Wednesday, and the full House was planning to vote on the issue later that afternoon. Patterson submitted his letter of resignation to Speaker of the House Andy Tobin before the matter was called to a vote. Patterson, who had represented

Legislative District 29 since 2009, was the subject of an ethics inquiry stemming from allegations of domestic abuse, charges he still Daniel faces. The re- Patterson port, compiled former state in part by princi- representative pal investigator Michael C. Manning, levies a variety of allegations against Patterson, including that he violated house rules and decorum and tampered with the alleged victim in his domestic

violence case. In his resignation letter, Patterson wrote that he believes the ethics committee violated both house rules and his constitutional rights during the investigation, and that the whole process was “unfair.” “The rights of Arizona voters and constituents in Tucson (Legislative District) 29 have been badly disrespected by the Ethics Committee,” Patterson wrote. “The will and decision of voters has been violated again by the House.” Patterson has called the report “garbage” and released an official response to the allegations on Tuesday. In that response, Patterson

repeatedly asked for an opportunity to confront his accusers. “The Manning report, which fails tests of what a true independent investigation should be, should be dismissed now,” Patterson wrote. “Nearly all the claims in the Manning report are not substantiated.” Patterson alleged that the report was akin to a “fishing expedition,” meant to find a reason to remove him from office and that the investigation was “far too liberal and broad” in scope. According to the Arizona Revised Statutes, the Pima County Board of Supervisors will appoint a citizens’ committee to seek out three qualified

candidates who are eligible to fill the vacancy. The board will then choose one of the three to serve out the remainder of the term. Since Patterson was an independent, all candidates must be registered independents in Pima County. Per the statutes, that committee will be formed within the next three business days and then have seven days to choose the candidates. The board is expected to name an interim legislator within the next five days. Online at DAILYWILDCAT.COM Review documents related to Daniel Patterson’s resignation.

DAILY WILDCAT Freshman guard Josiah Turner will leave the UA and transfer to another program, the school announced Wednesday. Center Kyryl Natyazhko will also leave the team to pursue a professional career in Europe. Arizona now has one scholarship to spare for the 2012-13 season after it entered the day one above the limit of 12. The Wildcats added two transfers, Duquesne guard T.J. McConnell and Cochise College forward Matt Korcheck, this offseason and are in the running for threestar guard Amedeo Della Valle. Turner played in 29 of the Wildcats’ 35 games a year ago, starting 17 of them. The Sacramento, Calif., native is the second member of Arizona’s highly regarded 2011 recruiting class to leave the school after center Sidiki Johnson was dismissed from the team in December. “I learned a lot in my year at Arizona and would like to thank my coaches, teammates and the fans for all of their support,” Turner said in the UA’s release.

Spring Fling now in full swing By Savannah Martin DAILY WILDCAT ASUA’s annual Spring Fling kicks off today at 4 p.m. and will continue into the weekend, with games, rides and snacks for all. General admission costs $5, but is free with a valid CatCard or military identification. A free shuttle to the fair will be available to and from Old Main and Linkins Hall, and parking at the fair will cost $5. Spring Fling began in 1974 and has grown to be the nation’s largest studentrun carnival, according to the Associated Students of the University of Arizona. More than 25 attractions and 20 food booths brought at least 25,000 people to the event last year. While this year’s festivities will continue Spring Fling’s longstanding traditions, carnival-goers can expect some changes and new attractions as well. For the first time in Spring Fling history, attendees can pay for their admission and tickets with credit cards, according to Brittany Steinke, a history senior and executive director of Spring Fling. The update was made along with several other service-oriented changes in an effort to address customer complaints, Steinke said. Another enhanced feature of Spring Fling 2012 is the array of live performances. The carnival will showcase two

to three local acts each day, Steinke said, including the 1980s pop cover band, ‘80s and Gentlemen, which takes the stage on Saturday at 7 p.m. Children may find entertainment in the kid’s corner, which now features face painting and book readings. Spring Fling brings the UA and Tucson community together, Steinke said. Thirty four student organizations from across the university and 19 sponsors from throughout the city will contribute to this year’s carnival. “It’s so great for me to see the community partner with students,” Steinke said. “We at Spring Fling know that this is not an event that could happen without Tucson.” Also, as a not-for-profit fundraiser, all of the clubs and organizations participating keep all of the profits from their individual booths, Steinke said.
