Four Resume Do’s & Don’ts to Land the Interview
resume in your contact information and any other professional communication methods. Include your website link in your email signature, and add the link to your LinkedIn account. Creating content and being active on LinkedIn are just a few avenues to add tangible value to your resume and highlighting your approach to the industry.
By Sarah Seavey Career Educator
Don’t:
Sell yourself short A resume should NOT be a running list of tasks you have completed. Instead, a successful resume highlights most relevant skill sets and accomplishments that illustrate a complete and successful portfolio in reply to the job post. Identify your skills through your education (classes, team projects, and research), experiences (internships, work), and engagement (clubs, leadership roles, and volunteer and community service). What makes you unique? Display your capability: Your resume is one part of your portfolio and professional brand. Do not shy away from adding your accomplishments on paper and do not limit yourself to just the resume. Create a personal website that highlights your work. Add the link to your
Do: Highlight
Transferable Skills Take note of transferable skills. Transferable skills are skills and abilities which can be applied to different jobs or industries. For example, if you worked in a restaurant, transferable skills include customer service, teamwork, sales, cash handling, and supervisory experience. When transferring your skills, ensure each bullet point on your resume has a purpose. When writing a bullet point, ask yourself: • Who do/did I work with? (team size, autonomously, direct report to supervisor) • What were my tasks or accomplishments?
• How well did I complete the task? • What was the result of my effort? (awards, increased sales by 20%) • Does this bullet point demonstrate my skills and experience? • Is this bullet point clear and concise?
Do: Your Research Do your research on the company and role you are applying for. Is the company in the news recently or working on a new initiative, or have they recently won an award? What is the team currently working on? Can you identify any points for improvement? Can you solve them? What value do you add to the team?
Don’t: Go for
Quantity over Quality
Would you rather: Apply to 50 companies and have one call you for an interview Apply to 4 companies and have one call for an interview Option A requires a higher investment of your time. Your investment will go further in quality of application materials over quantity of postings. Another way to think of it is from the company’s viewpoint. Companies receive high volumes of applications and messages from candidates with general resumes. Candidates often make the mistake of expecting the company to invest the time in finding the ways the candidate matches their position. However, typically, employers spend 6-7 seconds viewing a resume for the first time.
Starting your research of the company and role during the job search phase will enhance your overall job search experience and success. First, you will have a sense of the company’s culture, mission, vision and values. This will help you go from applying to anything that sounds good, to applying to jobs you are not only qualified for but make you excited for the future. Secondly, research will add focus to your resume and better engage the reader. Lastly, detailed research will demonstrate initiative by allowing you to arrive to the interview equipped with insight and prepared to illustrate exactly why you are a good match for the company.
Remember, your first impression with the company starts during the application process, not on your first day!

GettInG hIreD: the reCruIter PersPeCtIve By Melissa Poole Career eduCator
As a Career Educator in higher education, and a former recruiter, I understand the dynamic environment that exists in the recruitment and hiring process. Should students approach a recruiter the same way they approach a hiring manager? Both roles share a similar goal of filling open positions, but the perspectives in hiring can be quite different.
What iS the Difference betWeen a hiring Manager anD a recruiter?
A recruiter’s mission is to find a qualified individual to fill a position so the company can make more money (and to make money themselves). They may not be fully invested in the role, since they will fill it, and move on to filling another position elsewhere.
They can work for the company directly, or be hired from an outside recruitment agency. A hiring manager’s mission is also to fill a position with the BEST person for the job. They have a variety of responsibilities, on top of making the final decisions on hiring. They tend to have in depth knowledge of the company and the position. They may even be the supervisor for the position, so they are often invested in the new hire for many reasons, including time and cost for training, specific experience, and longevity potential.
hoW ShoulD a StuDent begin to navigate the ProceSS? Understand how you are being evaluated: Recruiters often want to expedite the process since their main goal is to fill the position. They may use a simple rating sheet to evaluate things like personal appearance, etiquette and professionalism, confidence, and leadership potential. You could present yourself as more competitive among your peers, and in the market, by preparing for this – which means a recruiter will WANT to place you somewhere, even if the current position does not work out. The hiring manager will evaluate much more. The focus is on this role, right now. Therefore, this may be
your only opportunity with this company. They are also trying to assemble a diverse and functional team. They will be evaluating how you will fit into that team, the culture, and the company. They might evaluate your personality, supervisory style, and approach to projects.
StanD out: thiS goeS for both a recruiter anD hiring Manager. Recruiters see A LOT of students during career fairs and on-campus visits. An average student who meets the requirements might not stay top of mind, as opposed to a student who is charismatic, completes research on the position and the company, and prepares their “elevator pitch” ahead of time. Remember, there are many ways to prepare yourself for the recruitment and hiring process. The key is word is PREPARATION. These tips could get you noticed and hopefully, hired!

JoB huntInG tIPs If you are like most college students, you have given some thought to what you plan to do after you graduate, right? Of course you have! When applying for internships and jobs, follow these simple tips from the College Recruiting Team at Freeport-McMoRan for a successful application: • Set up a LinkedIn account and keep it up to date – many employers use LinkedIn to source new candidates. • Attend career fairs and networking events on campus to meet industry professionals. • Make sure your resume is concise and organized – it is the first (and sometimes ONLY) thing that recruiters will see. • Always ask the interviewer at least two questions at the end of an interview to show interest in the position and the company. • Clean up your social media. (Yes, really!) • Think about your interview response before giving an answer – otherwise, you could risk seeming too rehearsed or even disinterested in what the interviewer has to say. • Practice/prepare for your interviews

by researching the company and potential interview questions – the website Glassdoor.com is a good source for company reviews, interview questions and even salary information from current or previous employees. • Don’t get discouraged if don’t get an offer right away – take your interviewing experience and learn from it. It’s okay to even send an email to the interviewer and ask for feedback. • Many interviewers ask behavioralstyle interview questions to gauge your future behavior based on your past behavior. These questions usually start with “tell me about a time when...” or “give me an example of a time when you had to...” When responding to these questions: • Think S.T.A.R – Situation, Task, Actions Taken and Result • Keep your answer detailed but concise
So there you have it, some quick tips for your resume and interviewing. As an international mining company with over 30,000 employees, Freeport-McMoRan knows a thing or two about hiring the right people.
