Many of us know from experience that the job search is challenging, and requires a great time commitment.

Questions come up that are difficult to answer: current resume trends, skills employers are seeking, or hiring stan-

dards of different industries. As you transition from college to the start of your career, guidance during this time is essential.

The Design Your Search (DYS) program supports every student in a job and/or internship search process with resources and directions that address common job search topics and questions. These topics include how to create action plans and research industries, how to customize resumes and application materials, and how to best evaluate opportunities to accept an offer that is a match for you.

One of the core principles of this program is that you are encouraged and empowered to take charge of your career, so DYS is a self-paced program. You can utilize the program to meet your

needs based on your goals. As the job or internship seeker, you determine the number of hours you spend in the program, the activities and resources you use, the amount of interaction you want with a Career Educator, as well as your ultimate goal of what you want out of Design Your Search. One unique aspect of the program is that it is intended to provide support through you receiving and accepting an offer.

In this program, you can learn about conducting a successful search through our online program modules in D2L. In addition, you will get consistent help from trained peers, and through one-on-one meetings with a Career Educator who will communicate with you at critical points or when you have questions.

Having a strong resume or CV is important, as is making a plan for research, so many of the steps can also be applied to how one would navigate grad school applications.

CHOOSE YOUR OWN 

You have to start somewhere, or so the saying goes. In college, the usual place to start is choosing a major. Once you do that, suddenly you have a place to start: a set of courses to take, specific things to learn, and people to meet.

For some, knowing the career they’re pursuing makes choosing a major easy.

For others, choosing a major is a necessary part of college, and just a path to get them started, to somewhere. Which leads to the questions, does that path always have to lead to a career? Should it?

The short answer is not really. Student Engagement and Career Development surveyed three UA alumni who work for Vanguard, none of whom majored in finance or a major related to finance. So how did they find themselves so far afield of their major, working at one of the world’s largest investment companies?





Thomas Johnson, Supervisor, Personal Advisor Services, grew up wanting to work in sports, and entertained the idea of becoming a professional athlete.

Thomas Johnson “I abandoned VANGUARD the idea of being a professional athlete pretty quickly in high school,” remembers Johnson. “I was just not athletically gifted enough to realize that dream.” As a sports fan, though, he still wanted to be involved with sports.

“I thought it would be really interesting to either be a sports broadcaster or a sports writer, which led me to becoming a Communication major and a Journalism minor at UA.” His experiences in and out of the college classroom enabled Johnson to

have a successful, decade-long career in sports broadcasting right out of college, but eventually he was ready to make a change.

“I’m the type of person that’s always looking to challenge myself and to continue learning and growing, so I was looking to make a drastic change for my second career,” explains Johnson.

Still, Johnson found himself relying on some old skills to open new doors.

“When I decided to switch gears and change careers, I truly saw the value of my Communication degree as numerous different industries listed it as a desirable major for jobs in their companies,” says Johnson.

And it was certainly a skill-set that helped him start a new career in finance at Vanguard, as well as having a growthmindset.

“While I had no real business or finance background to speak of, I knew how to talk to people, which Vanguard also recognized. I still had the drive and desire to learn about finances, but no

matter what change I have made in my career, I have always been able to fall back on my superior communication skills to get me through until I was able to fully educate myself on the nuances of the new role.”

In the end, it was the skills Johnson developed as a communications major that allowed him to forge different careers in very different industries.

“When I was in school, I did not even have a fleeting thought about the financial industry, and yet here I am a supervisor of financial advisors,” says Johnson. “It was a winding path, to end up in a role like this. But it was the best path for me, so it’s important for students to have an open enough mind to realize that not all paths are a straight line and to have the willingness and courage to take a different path when they feel it is time.”

“In the end, no matter what major you are, the more you learn and grow in this world, the better the person you will be in the end.”



ONE DAY EXPERIENCE, LIFETIME IMPACT

Growing up is a constant evolution, and the same can be said of our hopes and dreams. When it comes to career, how many of us declared early on that we would be a veterinarian, or a fire fighter, or an architect? Most of us have made and revised such career proclamations many times over, starting as soon as we learned to talk and stretching right up through the present day. But the “you” of kindergarten or middle school or even yesterday is not necessarily the “you” of today. Realizing what you love to learn, do, and become over your lifetime is ideally what you came to college to find out, right?

With these truths in mind, we created the UA Job Shadow Program to deliver real-life career exploration experiences to as many Wildcats as possible.

So, what, exactly, is a job shadow?

It’s a one-day, professional experience where you get to spend time at and

soak up the realities of a workplace and the roles within it. Because of our wide network of alumni and friends, we offer shadows throughout Arizona and across the country. The shadow opportunity is free to UA students, though travel and transportation is entirely up to you.

Each employer offers a different, custom experience, depending on the role of the host and the vibe and environment of the company. But every single shadow promises that you get real-time,

real-world insight into your career learning and desires.

With only a year of the program under our belt, we have already witnessed huge revelations from participating students of all backgrounds and passions.

“I learned so much about the city and about city issues in the span of a day.

The experience was very personable and interesting,” freshman, Political Science Major (Shadowed with Office of Tucson City Councilwoman Regina Romero) Students seeking liberal arts degrees have discovered future possibilities in tech, public policy, and healthcare.

“Our host was incredible. He was patient and answered all of our questions, every activity was completely organized and curated for our interests. He made me feel very welcomed and motivated to learn about this field,” senior, Studio Art Major (Shadowed with City of Mesa Forensics) While other students go into the shadow knowing just what they want to do and walk away from the day even more certain of a life path. Equally as remarkable and important are those students who thought they wanted to pursue medicine, or real estate, or entertainment, only to definitively decide that it’s surprisingly not the right world

for them.

“In one day, I learned that I wanted to change my career path, and how to stand out as an applicant,” sophomore, Pre-Neuroscience & Cognitive Science Major In every case, the job shadow experience is a day extremely well spent.

We want nothing more than for UA students to find clarity and purpose.
