A unique student housing property with a “No Party policy” and innovative amenities and services thrives in Tucson a 13 mile hike, “Tucson Meet Yourself” event downtown, had a game night on site with free food and refreshments, and a movie night. We also went to the Corn Maze for Halloween and to the “International Festival of Tucson”. And that was just for October! Sahara is still the only student building in Tucson that will give every resident a FREE bicycle to ride while living at Sahara. We even maintain and repair the bikes for free.

Sahara apartments is in its 11th year of operation as a student housing project in Tucson. Ted Mehr, the owner of Sahara Apartments, has introduced a lot of innovations to the Tucson student housing market. Ted, who still manages the building on a day to day basis developed this project as the “paranoid” father of a college age daughter, who was concerned about his own daughter’s safety and comfort when she had gone to live on her own while attending college. Some of Ted’s ideas have been duplicated by others, and some are still unique to Sahara. For example, Sahara is still the only building that does not allow parties on site. Our motto is “The oasis for QUIET student living”. At Sahara you are guaranteed a quiet environment. If anyone violates the rules, the residents can call the owner, Ted, no matter what time of day or night. And he will drive down to the building to make sure the violators understand that the policy is really enforced. When students move into Sahara, they get Ted’s cell phone AND home phone numbers, you know, just in case the cell phone runs out of battery right when someone needs to call. All residents are encouraged to call Ted if they feel uncomfortable about anything. That sort of attitude is not something that you will get from the corporate-owned high rise competition. In case you think our no party policy means no fun, you should know that Sahara has an activity director who organizes many group activities sponsored by Sahara where the residents get an opportunity to get together and do fun things as a group. For instance at the time of this writing, for the month of October, we took our residents to Mt. Lemmon for the October Fest, Sabino Canyon for

Sahara is also the only student building that provides hotel accommodations on site, where visiting family and friends can stay when they come to visit our residents. The hotel also accommodates professors, researchers, workshop attendees and many groups of international students that are placed at Sahara by the University. We treat our residents like they are expensive works of art in a museum. Our gated community is protected with an infrared beam system that alerts the owner with an automatic cellphone call if someone trespasses by climbing over the walls. 80 security cameras record all events at the perimeter of the building and in the public areas. And our staff who live on site are ready to respond if required. These are some of the reasons why in our 10 year history we have never received a “Red Tag” from the police department. Offering shuttle service to and from the campus is now standard practice for a lot of buildings, but we do it every half hour from 7 AM to 7 PM, on every school day. At Sahara, you can enjoy the privacy of having your own studio apartment for a lot less than a single occupancy room at the Residence Halls, or sharing an apartment at one of the high rise buildings with people whose lifestyles may not be compatible with yours. While we admit we are not for everybody, nor do we want to be, there is a lot more that you should know about Sahara before you decide what your choice of student housing should be. Check out our website and find out why Sahara has become more popular each year as the word has spread that you can have a safe and quiet environment and still have fun. Sahara Apartments 919 N. We hope you enjoy the Spring 2019 edition of the Parents & Family Magazine from the University of Arizona office of Parent & Family Programs. We were honored to welcome over 8,000 incoming freshmen and transfer students, along with their parents and family members in the Fall 2018 and Spring 2019 semesters. We connected with you at orientation, family weekend, university and community events, and through a variety of communications. We could not have accomplished this without our campus community, community partners and YOU! If you are new to the University of Arizona, we invite you to visit our website at uafamily.arizona.edu for timely information and to sign up for our free PFA membership. If you use social media, we can be found on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest – and all links are located on our website. In February 2019 the Parents & Family Association (PFA) Board discussed ideas to further engage our Wildcat Families, creating a new mission statement of “Families for Families” to personalize communications among UA students, parents and family members and to enhance the involvement in daily campus life and the overall college experience. The board’s intention is to work with family members across the nation, developing regional groups of Wildcat Families who continue to stay connected serving one another. To this end, Parent & Family Programs has a variety of ways parents and family members can get involved no matter their location. If interested, we’d love to have your support. Springtime on our beautiful campus is my favorite time of the year. Our students are spending their days outside whether it is to study in the sun, or hangout on the UA Mall. It is especially exciting for our students who are graduating in May. If you plan to join us for commencement festivities, please check out our commencement website with everything you need to know regarding this event at commencement.arizona.edu. We want this to be a special event for both you and your student, and we extend our sincere congratulations! If your student is returning in the Fall semester or starting at the UA, please review our Wildcat Welcome Family activities piece on page 7. We also invite you to join us for Family Weekend Oct. 11-13, 2019. Finally, I would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all of the parents and family members who volunteered with us this past year. Whether serving on the PFA Board, hosting a Coffee Chat, volunteering for Family Weekend or recruiting events, we appreciate your dedication, time and commitment to the University of Arizona and your student. We wish you all the best, Bear Down! With Wildcat Pride,

Annamarie Tellez

PARENTS & FAMILY ASSOCIATION SPRING UPDATE

A MESSAGE FROM THE PFA BOARD CHAIR By David Bidwell, PFA Advisory Board Chair

Greetings University of Arizona Families, My name is David Bidwell and I am the chair for the UA Parents & Family Association (PFA) Advisory Board. I call New Jersey home and have a daughter who is a senior at the University of Arizona. The UA Parents & Family Association is similar to the PTA/PTO you might have been involved with during your student’s K-12 years. The primary goals for PFA is to provide outreach, to be a source of information, resources, and support for the families of UA students. You are welcome to connect with fellow parents through social media, to email Board members in your area with questions and concerns and to contact UA staff members in Parent & Family Programs. I also encourage you to attend events hosted by PFA including Summer Send-Offs in local areas, Wildcat

If you are interested, please send us an email at dos-uafamily@email.arizona.edu. I am excited to share that PFA is bringing back the second annual Family Weekend Golf Challenge with a new twist. We are hosting a Family Golf Challenge on Friday, October 11 from 9 am-noon at the Topgolf location in Tucson. Topgolf’s tournament offers a casual, social environment with golf games and challenges for people of all skill levels. All proceeds benefit the UA campus pantry. We hope you will bring your family along to participate in the tournament. Students are welcome as long as they are not missing class to attend. On behalf of the entire PFA Board, I extend a warm welcome to all of you and look forward to meeting you in the year ahead! Bear Down!

A HALF CENTURY OF

NEW STARTS

NEW START STUDENTS attend the closing keynote address of the 26th Annual New Start Academic Conference. This year’s theme was Borders and Boundaries: Finding and Redefining Our Limits. By Tom Murray

In 1969, The University of Arizona piloted a program to increase access to education for students who have historically faced barriers to attaining a college degree. In 2018, the New Start Summer Program welcomed its New Start alumni attribute > Many their success at UA to their participation in New Start, so much so that the program regularly has participants whose parents are also alumni of the program. 50th class, beginning a year of celebration of a half a century of helping students create a foundation for their success at UA. In that 50 years, over 14,000 new Wildcats began their UA career with New Start with incredible success. Many New Start

alumni attribute their success at UA to their participation in New Start, so much so that the program regularly has participants whose parents are also alumni of the program. The program has changed in 50 years, as it should. Student needs change, the university systems change, and so New Start must change with them. However, the program’s focus on meeting the needs of Arizona students has not. In 2018, New Start welcomed over 375 stu-

dents, its largest class in eight years. Nearly all of those students were Arizona residents, 76% from southern Arizona. These students took two classes, earning 6-7 units of credit, placing them a half a semester closer to graduation. Nearly 300 of them also had the opportunity to live on campus for the program. New Start’s commitment to financial access is also going strong. In 2018, over 98% of New Start students CONTINUED ON PAGE 11 CONTINUED ON PAGE 11

received some form of financial aid and 70% paid nothing for tuition and student fees, program fee, or the dorm. This is accomplished through two financial aid programs. The first, the New Start Pell Promise, is a UA commitment to cover remaining expenses after a student’s Pell grant is applied. Students who do not qualify for the Pell grant but still cannot pay out of pocket for the program can apply for the New Start Friends and Alumni Scholarship. Beyond the costs of the program, New Start has also begun working to help students meet their basic needs, partnering with Youth on Their Own to support incoming students who are experiencing homelessness and developing programs to help students facing food insecurity to get access to food. So what’s next for New Start? The program has recently joined Thrive Center, a brand new UA department committed to ensuring that students don’t just survive college, but thrive. Thrive Center has a special focus on serving first generation, low income, students of color and joining this office presents a perfect synergy of programs and services that will ensure New Start students are supported from their very first day of New Start all the way through their college graduation. As we begin to recruit for the 51st class of New Start, our biggest plan is to more intentionally and effectively activate our alumni network. With over 14,000 alumni, New Start has the capacity to connect its newest students with former students who can learn from their academic and career experiences. Whether it is being a judge at New Start’s annual Academic Conference, conducting mock interviews, or simply meeting with students for coffee, alumni have so much to offer. And that’s not just student alumni! We know that many “staff alumni” – former group leaders, peer advisors, resident assistants, tutors as well as instructors and professional staff – have incredible life experience.

NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION

HELPING YOUR STUDENT TAKE THEIR NEXT STEPS By Damien Snook, Director, New Student Orientation

Welcome to the Wildcat family! The next few months will be very busy planning with your student for their upcoming transition to the University of Arizona. We hope to make that process a little bit easier through the Next Steps Center and New Student Orientation. the opportunity to learn more about services to help your student succeed, meet staff from across campus, and find out how to get connected and stay involved with the University. Come prepared with your questions and experience the University of Arizona firsthand! There are a few things for your student to do in order to be ready for New Student Orientation. Luckily, the UA has them covered with the Next Steps Center (nextsteps.arizona.edu) to ensure they don’t miss anything. The Next Steps Center is a digital checklist with all the important steps your student will need to complete before starting classes in the fall, including paying their enrollment fee and registering for an Orientation program. It is also vital for students to complete their math, second language, and writing placement through Next Steps Center before attending Orientation. The purpose of these placement assessments is to help your student succeed in their first semester by ensuring they register for the level of classes that matches their current abilities and experience. All students should complete placement requirements at least a week prior to their Orientation session, as CONTINUED ON PAGE 15

development. However, this past year cements our campus’ reputation as an international and national leader shifting beyond legal compliance made possible by the support of the Student Services Fee (SSF) Grant and the Disability Resource Center. The Disability Cultural Center (DCC) is a new and exciting space for students, faculty and staff to explore and celebrate disability identity, culture and community. The DCC offers a variety of events and programming, such as movie screenings, peer-led discussions, social gatherings and campus visits from authors and disability rights activists that promote an authentic and intersectional perspective on disability. UA continues to challenge widespread disempowering and negative views on disability by providing disabled students and their allies dedicated space to celebrate and explore disability identity and the depth of the disability experience. One student shared “the DCC has allowed me to be me and gain a sense of community and family. In addition, the DCC has provided resources that I was unaware of enabling me to be more independent and develop my identity as a wheelchair user.” The DCC hosted their first open house in September 2018, gathering over 200 students, faculty and staff in our center to introduce the new space. The space is decorated with photographs and artwork by disabled people to spread disability history, culture and pride of our community. If you are an artist and want to be featured in the space, please contact us. In the fall of 2018, the DCC hosted their first campus wide event featuring the work of disabled author Eli Clare, Brilliant Imperfection Grappling with Cure. Eli speaks, teaches, and facilitates all over the United States about disability, queer and trans identities, and social justice. This event engaged over 150 people across campus and our local community. For the spring, the DCC planned a wide array of programming and events including a screening of the documentary Murderball, featuring wheelchair rugby athletes. The DCC partnered with the Adalberto & Ana Guerrero Student Center, Disability Resource Center, UA Student Services Fee, LGBTQIA+ Resource Center to host Annie Segarra for a campus wide event. We invite all campus and community members to stop by anytime (hours: Monday through Friday 9 a.m.-4 p.m). We are located on the second floor of Disability Resources in Highland Commons D217.

FACULTY FELLOWS

23

THE POWER OF STUDENT-FACULTY INTERACTION By Caitlin Kerrigan, Coordinator, Faculty Programs

From the minute students step on campus, they matter to a faculty fellow. The UA is home to some of the most engaged, innovative, and caring professors in the nation. Research demonstrates student-faculty engagement outside the classroom promotes student persistence, educational aspirations, and degree completion (Pascarella & Terenzini, 2005). Additionally, interaction between student and faculty is a significant factor in supporting college student learning and retention (Campbell & Campbell, 1997; Kuh & Hu, 2001; Lillis, 2012). While it may be intimidating for students to approach faculty members, rest assured that there are programs set up at the UA to help build the bridge between students and faculty; programs like the Faculty Fellows. Established in 1984, the Faculty Fel-

lows consist of 60 exceptional faculty who bring a small liberal arts college feel to a large, Research I university. With backgrounds ranging from Aerospace & Mechanical Engineering to Gender & Women’s studies, there is one thing that all Faculty Fellows have in common – an unwavering commitment to student success. Each fellow is assigned to one of 44 sites across campus including dorms, cultural and resource centers, and Arizona Athletics. Spending dedicated time at their site each week provides students with an opportunity to build relationships with faculty outside the classroom, breaking down traditional barriers and encouraging feelings of mattering and belonging. Every interaction with a faculty fellow is informed by our programmatic goals to: • Foster students’ connection to UA as a whole

Welcome to Hub At Tucson! Fill a unit and you will each receive a $250 Gift Card! Enjoy over 5,500 square feet of panoramic view of University of Arizona campus, downtown Tucson, and southern Arizona mountain ranges. 1011 N. Tyndall Ave. 520.881.1818 HubAtTucson.com @HubAtTucson

• Help make a large school feel much smaller • Create avenues for student-faculty relationship building. While these are the guiding principles of the program, each fellow has a different approach to connecting with students at their sites. Don McCarthy, faculty fellow in Coronado Hall spends his Monday nights preparing s’mores for 800 students. What starts as dessert quickly morphs into meaningful conversations with students. “My most interpersonal conversations have come as I prepare 100 dessert items weekly in the kitchen and then serve door-to-door. Students see me working hard to serve them and this regular, friendly effort is appreciated. I always have interesting, lengthy conversations, often follow ups with the same students or student groups. CONTINUED ON PAGE 25

Sometimes they join me in the kitchen to help cook or visit while their laundry is drying or they are just waiting for me to appear on their hallway and then help me serve other students.” While Don makes s’mores, Crystal Soltero, faculty fellow in Posada San Pedro Hall connects pre-health majors to opportunities in the Tucson Community and at UA Banner medical institute. “As a faculty fellow for Posada San Pedro, building community is my main role. I want to connect students to opportunities in the greater UA community to help make the large campus more navigable.” As Crystal works to connect students to the Tucson Community, faculty fellows Ed Prather and Faten Ghosn work to create community within the VETS Center. Lunch on Wednesdays in the VETS Center is unlike any other across campus as Ed and Faten host weekly roundtables with students. “Student veterans are a very diverse population of folks who come from a unique set of backgrounds and who are facing a unique set of challenges. To this end we have worked to create an inclusive and supportive environment in which Vets feel both safe and supported.” Each week, Ed and Faten get to know more and more about student veterans. What they noticed was that VETS students are different and the best way to make a difference is to empower them to become leaders for one another through the creation of the Peer Advocacy Liaison Program (PALS). The PALS program gives veterans the tools and knowledge needed to navigate the UA as they transition back to civilian life. While each professor has their own approach to student engagement, what makes the faculty fellows unique is their dedication to connecting to students outside the classroom. Fellows volunteer their time because they love students. It is my sincere hope that all students are able to meet and interact with fellows, who I can guarantee will make your students feel like they matter and belong as a member of the Wildcat Family.

WORKING TO REDUCE FOOD INSECURITY

UA CAMPUS PANTRY

Food insecurity is a growing concern across college campuses. Universities are hearing from their students that obtaining nutritious food has become more difficult while managing other economic stressors (i.e. tuition, textbooks, fees). In order to help students and maintain a high retention rate, institutions are turning to food pantries as a way to help students. The University of Arizona is no exception to this and is becoming a model for assisting students in need. Started in 2012, the UA Campus Pantry works to alleviate food insecurity on The University of Arizona campus. This service is a unit of the Associated Students of the University of Arizona (ASUA) and is entirely operated by student leaders. Any student, faculty, or staff member with a valid CatCard can use the Pantry. The Campus Pantry employs a “client choice” model, where users can choose the items they need. Each item is awarded a point value (i.e. cereal is 2 points, canned veggies are 0.5 points), and each client has 4 points to use per visit. The Pantry gets items through sustained food drives and monetary donations used to purchase perishable items and those not easily donated (milk, bread, and peanut butter). The Pantry also has a great relationship with Arizona Student Unions and the

CAMPUS PANTRY INFOGRAPHIC PHOTO COURTESY OF UA CAMPUS PANTRY Controlled Environment Agriculture Center, who operate a greenhouse on the roof of the Student Union Memorial Center. This garden provides fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, and bell peppers that are directly routed to the Pantry for immediate distribution. The Pantry operates 11 hours a week and is open Wednesday from noon7 p.m. and Friday from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. During the Fall 2018 Semester, the pantry saw an average of 233 clients per distribution, nearly doubling the amount of users from the Spring 2018 Semester. The Pantry also is planning

on adding a third distribution day sometime in Spring 2019, and has the eventual goal of operating MondayFriday starting in September 2019. The Pantry serves as a bridge for our community members who do not have consistent fresh eating options. Continued support of the Campus Pantry helps meet the growing demand and ensure all Wildcats have a fundamental need satisfied. To learn more about the Pantry and how families can support its efforts, please visit http://www.campuspantry. arizona.edu.

Someone is Looking for You ! There IS a superior intelligence “out there” — and a loving one too. Your Creator wants you to acknowledge Him, and come to know Him and His ways. Don’t be deceived by evolutionism. All creation screams of intelligent design! The odds alone of DNA evolving are virtually nil. Evolutionism is the only “science” that denies the law of degeneration (entropy). God alone is the origin of life, and the true God wants/needs no one to take away life for Him – beware the “god” that does! God exists, and the Bible is His Word. What is unique about the Bible? For one thing, it is the only book with fulfilled prophecy (Isaiah 46:9-10). Test it yourself! For starters, try (current situation) Psalm 83 and Zechariah 12; (reformation of Israel after nearly 1900 years) Isaiah 66:8, Jeremiah 16:14-15, Jeremiah 31:7-10, Amos 9:9-15, Ezekiel 34:12-31, Ezekiel 36, and Ezekiel 37:21-22; (suffering/crucifixion of Christ) Psalm 22 and Isaiah 53; (future situation) Zechariah 13:7 - 14:21; (timing of the 2nd Coming of Christ) Joel 3:1-2, 2 Peter 3:8/ Hosea 5:14 - 6:2. “No one knows the day or the hour!” you cry? The Word says: 1Thessalonians 5:1-6. “Too hard to read and understand” you say? Try the KJV/Amplified/Complete Jewish parallel bible (biblegateway.com). “It’s all in how you interpret it” you say? The Bible, despite numerous transcribers over hundreds of years, is remarkably consistent/coherent and interprets itself. Our Creator is the actual author (2Peter 1:16-21). Beware of modern, liberal translations from “the higher critics” which seriously distort the Word! Finally, if there is a God, why is there so much evil? We have rejected God, and now see what it is like to live in a world where God has permitted us (temporarily) to rule ourselves. Give up your lusts, and come to your Creator and follow His ways (Jude 1:18-25). All that this world has to offer is as nothing compared to what He has in store for those who love Him (1Corinthians 2:9 , John 14:15) Isaiah 55:6-9!

Supporting public education in Tucson and Pima County since 1930.

Louise Foucar Marshall The relationship between our founder, Louise Foucar Marshall, and the University began over 100 years ago in 1898. A professor at UA and a shrewd business woman, she bought land around the University and founded the Foundation in 1930 to support education and youth. Since that time, Marshall Foundation, through the management of its real estate assets and the rede redevelopment of the area known as Main Gate Square, has donated over $24 million to the University of Arizona in scholarships, special projects, and to not for proots in Pima County.

Marshall Foundation is a proud supporter of UA Parent & Family Programs, the University of Arizona, its families, innovators, thinkers, and creators as the work you do enriches our community and the world. Maximize Your Student Housing Dollars!

afety More Sm fort, o C d n a ! Less Cost

See Sahara Apartments advantages compared to the rest.

Student housing properties offer many choices depending on your budget. But few offer safety, comfort, modern amenities, quiet environment, AND a low price. Yes, our lower monthly rents include all utilities, HD Broadcast TV, and high-speed Internet.

Compared to the dorms:

Sahara offers many advantages compared to the dorms but most significant is the absolutely lowest rental rate for double occupancy studios for students in Tucson when you consider all the free services and amenities that are included in the rent. Our studio apartments are larger than the dorm rooms, include full kitchens and baths, roommate matching service, and we have onsite affordable hotel rooms available for family and friends. With all these advantages, consider checking us out before you write that dorm check.

Compared to other properties: Sahara offers easy choices. Share a studio with full kitchen and bath or live in that same studio solo. Our single occupancy studios are some of the lowest priced in Tucson. Why take the chance of ending up with the “roommate(s) from hell” when you can have a studio apartment all to yourself for less? All students appreciate our 24/7 quiet environment, modern amenities, and added savings compared to other properties.

Sahara Apartments advantages to maximize housing dollars: We deliver modern amenities, advanced safety and security features, comfort, and quiet environment unmatched by other properties. And with all these extras you still save big.

Advantages include: More Safety and Comfort, Less Cost! • Our famous “No Party” Policy creates a quiet environment 7 days a week. • Sahara sponsors social events on-and offsite, and has recreational facilities to encourage exercise, games, and fun • Sahara studios: 2 to 2.5 times larger than a dorm room, all with full kitchen and bath • 100% FREE utilities • FREE bicycles to use for all residents • Heavy block construction for less room-to-room noise
