A unique student housing property with a “No Party policy” and innovative amenities and services thrives in Tucson a 13 mile hike, “Tucson Meet Yourself” event downtown, had a game night on site with free food and refreshments, and a movie night. We also went to the Corn Maze for Halloween and to the “International Festival of Tucson”. And that was just for October! Sahara is still the only student building in Tucson that will give every resident a FREE bicycle to ride while living at Sahara. We even maintain and repair the bikes for free.

Sahara apartments is in its 11th year of operation as a student housing project in Tucson. Ted Mehr, the owner of Sahara Apartments, has introduced a lot of innovations to the Tucson student housing market. Ted, who still manages the building on a day to day basis developed this project as the “paranoid” father of a college age daughter, who was concerned about his own daughter’s safety and comfort when she had gone to live on her own while attending college. Some of Ted’s ideas have been duplicated by others, and some are still unique to Sahara. For example, Sahara is still the only building that does not allow parties on site. Our motto is “The oasis for QUIET student living”. At Sahara you are guaranteed a quiet environment. If anyone violates the rules, the residents can call the owner, Ted, no matter what time of day or night. And he will drive down to the building to make sure the violators understand that the policy is really enforced. When students move into Sahara, they get Ted’s cell phone AND home phone numbers, you know, just in case the cell phone runs out of battery right when someone needs to call. All residents are encouraged to call Ted if they feel uncomfortable about anything. That sort of attitude is not something that you will get from the corporate-owned high rise competition. In case you think our no party policy means no fun, you should know that Sahara has an activity director who organizes many group activities sponsored by Sahara where the residents get an opportunity to get together and do fun things as a group. For instance at the time of this writing, for the month of October, we took our residents to Mt. Lemmon for the October Fest, Sabino Canyon for

Sahara is also the only student building that provides hotel accommodations on site, where visiting family and friends can stay when they come to visit our residents. The hotel also accommodates professors, researchers, workshop attendees and many groups of international students that are placed at Sahara by the University. We treat our residents like they are expensive works of art in a museum. Our gated community is protected with an infrared beam system that alerts the owner with an automatic cellphone call if someone trespasses by climbing over the walls. 80 security cameras record all events at the perimeter of the building and in the public areas. And our staff who live on site are ready to respond if required. These are some of the reasons why in our 10 year history we have never received a “Red Tag” from the police department. Offering shuttle service to and from the campus is now standard practice for a lot of buildings, but we do it every half hour from 7 AM to 7 PM, on every school day. At Sahara, you can enjoy the privacy of having your own studio apartment for a lot less than a single occupancy room at the Residence Halls, or sharing an apartment at one of the high rise buildings with people whose lifestyles may not be compatible with yours. While we admit we are not for everybody, nor do we want to be, there is a lot more that you should know about Sahara before you decide what your choice of student housing should be. Check out our website and find out why Sahara has become more popular each year as the word has spread that you can have a safe and quiet environment and still have fun. Sahara Apartments 919 N. THE PFA, ALUMNI ASSOCIATION & OFFICE OF ADMISSIONS PRESENT

2018 SUMMER SEND-OFFS By Marc Acuña Director of Alumni & Student Engagement at the UA Alumni Association

For more than 16 years, the University of Arizona Alumni Association and the Parents & Family Association have partnered to celebrate the UA’s incoming freshman class by hosting Summer Send-Off celebrations across the country. This year we are also working with the Office of Admissions to plan a more engaging opportunity for alumni, parents and most importantly future Wildcats! National alumni chapters and current UA parents host send-offs to welcome incoming UA students. The send-offs also have the mission of educating students about the transition to college and helping create the feeling that these students are a part of the Wildcat Family and now Wildcats for Life! These events are also a chance to educate parents and family members about campus resources including the Parents & Family Association and the Alumni Association. Hosted by alumni, friends and parents of the UA, summer send-offs begin in early July in over twenty cities.

NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION CONTINUED FROM PAGE 13

Come prepared with your questions and experience the University of Arizona firsthand! There are a few things for your student to do in order to be ready for New Student Orientation. Luckily, the UA has students covered with the Next Steps Center (nextsteps.arizona.edu) to ensure they don’t miss anything. The Next Steps Center is a digital checklist with all the important steps your student will complete before starting classes in the fall, including paying their enrollment fee and registering for an Orientation program. It is also vital for students to complete their math, second language, and writing placement through the Next Steps Center before attending Orientation. The purpose of these placement assessments is to help your student succeed in their first semester by ensuring they register for the level of classes that matches their current abilities and experience. All students should complete placement requirements at least seven business days prior to their Orientation session, as a placement is necessary to register for subject-specific courses like math, science and English. Please make sure your student utilizes the Next Steps Center on a regular basis so they are prepared to attend and thrive at New Student Orientation. Through this site, your student has the option to create a UA Essentials account for up to five family members. This account gives guests information about important offices and services on campus. Students can also choose to give family members access to view their student and financial information and even make payments through Guest Center, which can be accessed with the UA Essentials account. If you have any questions with regards to Orientation or Next Steps, don’t hesitate to contact us at (520) 621-5293. Once again, welcome to the Wildcat family, and we look forward to seeing you and your student this summer at Orientation!

GLOBAL EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING:

INCLUSION & MULTICULTURAL ENGAGEMENT GEL PROVIDES STUDENTS from diverse backgrounds with experiences that will improve their employment prospects after graduation. PHOTO COURTESY OF DAN XAYAPHANH By Dan Xayaphanh, Director for Global Experiential Learning

The traditional definition of success in higher education used to be just graduating with a high GPA. With the intense competition of job searching, students today have to include extracurricular involvement that will make them stand out from their peers. This is what Global Experiential Learning (GEL) does. The University of Arizona (UA) is investing in marginalized student populations and low socioeconomic status (SES) students in hopes of changing the demographic of experiential learning opportunities both locally and abroad. In 2017, the UA created the new GEL area to provide more cost effective and shortterm opportunities to all University of Arizona students with a focus on marginalized students and low SES. GEL is an area where students develop knowledge, skills, and values from direct experiences outside a traditional academic setting both

These experiences provide students a deeper insight and understanding of their own cultural perspectives while building a culturally competent community. GEL challenges students to consider their own ethnocentric perspectives as they learn from and experience global perspectives. domestically and internationally. The GEL began with a study abroad program in Mexico and alternative spring break programs in the Navajo Nation, Hopi Nation, and Hawaii. Since then, GEL has expanded to include an experience in Southeast Asia as well as domestic experiences that highlight historical and current issues in these areas. Domestic

experiences this year will include programs to the Mount Lemmon Japanese Internment Prison Camp to uncover the injustices toward Japanese Americans during World War II, the Mexico border wall to discuss immigration issues, Biosphere 2 to discover natural incarceration, and a stay on the Navajo Nation to experience the DinĂŠ culture. All of these experiences have intentional programming for students to get hands-on experience with these communities and the issues they face. program also cultivates student exploration of parallel identity issues within the host community including, but not limited to the Asian, Indigenous, African, Latinx and immigrant experiences. Many study abroad programs require students to be absent from the UA for one to two whole semesters. For marginalized students or low SES students, this causes barriers to access. These students often carry a perception that they will be prolonging their expensive education that is already a struggle for them to afford. To address these barriers, GEL experiences can last anywhere from one day to one month and occur during winter, spring and summer breaks that do not fall within the traditional semester schedule. There is also an opportunity for students to gain between one and six credits that can contribute to the completion of their degree. Expenses

can be a concern for these students, so GEL seeks financial aid through scholarships and grants to assist with lowering program costs. Due to these funding sources, GEL can offer all its domestic programs to students free of charge, which allows students who cannot afford to participate in longer programs to participate in GEL.

Acknowledging the lack of diversity in traditional study abroad programs is a step in the right direction toward helping students participate in these experiences and stand out to employers. If you would like to learn more about or help support GEL, please visit our website at gel.arizona.edu.

CAREER READINESS IT’S WHAT WE DO

In 2015, the University of Arizona created the 100% Engagement Initiative with one goal in mind – to make UA graduates the most competitive in the career and graduate-school markets. Since then, thousands of UA students have utilized 100% Engagement to reach new levels of career success. Last year, engaged students averaged a starting salary of $54,870, roughly $5,000 more in starting salary than the national average for college graduates and $7,500 more than nonparticipants. In addition, engaged students were more likely to get accepted to gradu-

students reporting they were working in a career related to their area of study or interest.

WHAT IS 100% ENGAGEMENT? 100% Engagement is a program that helps students develop the job skills employers look for. Through engagement opportunities such as research, field world, internships, and study abroad, students gain valuable technical and interpersonal skills such as how to lead, collaborate effectively, and solve complex problems. THINKING OF LIVING OFF-CAMPUS? TRY OFF-CAMPUS HOUSING By Teresa Kolb, UA Off-Campus Housing Office

Check it out at offcampus.arizona. edu.

Is your student moving offcampus or looking for a new place to live next year? The University of Arizona Off-Campus Housing (OCH) Office is here to help! OCH is a free resource for all UA students. We provide tools, resources, information, and events designed to help with housing needs and make searching for a place to live an easier experience! Whether your student is currently living in a residence hall or already living on their own, OCH is a great resource. We offer:

• This year’s Off-Campus Housing Guidebook is in 10 locations around campus, including the Student Unions. Our guidebook offers lots of information to help make the transition from living on campus to off-campus smoother. There is also an electronic version of the guidebook available on our website on the “resources” page.

• A comprehensive website that allows your student to search for a place to live by distance to campus, amenities or price range. The website also offers a roommate search function, utility contacts, printable forms, and much more.

Students (and family members!) are encouraged to visit our office for personal help. We’re located on the 2nd floor of the El Portal Building at 501 N. Highland Ave. If you have questions or need additional assistance, contact OCH at offcampushousing@email. arizona.edu or (520) 621-5859. We are here to help.

explore a career in marketing. During her engagement experience, Zendejas worked with Tallwave leaders to draft a marketing campaign to broaden the consulting agency’s messaging and social media presence, making a direct connection to the workforce before graduation.

PREPARING STUDENTS FOR JOBS OF THE FUTURE Engagement experiences serve as stackable add-ons to academic majors, giving students a broad portfolio of experiences to draw from as they begin their careers. In the near future, having a varied skillset will become even more important. Between 2015 and 2020, 7.1 million jobs are expected to be lost to automation, according to the World Economic Forum. Today, the average worker will hold 10 different jobs before the age of 40, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This number is projected to grow to 12-15 with the rise of automation. Through 100% Engagement, students gain a diverse set of job skills, helping them evolve into adaptable, flexible workers that are prepared to transition to jobs of tomorrow.

The District on 5th is more than just a place to live—it’s a place where you can live, learn and play just steps away from The University of Arizona.

GO, GO, WILDCATS, GO! VOLUNTEER UA PRESENTS THE ASUA CHEER AND BASKETBALL LEAGUE By Alexei Marquez, Coordinator of Service, Student Governance and Programs

The Associated Students of the University of Arizona (ASUA) Cheer and Basketball League is a University of Arizona student run program for Tucson youth, 8 to 13 years of age. This league has several purposes. First, get Tucson youth onto the UA campus early and more often in their educational career. Second, to provide volunteer opportunities for current UA students during the spring semester. The ASUA Cheer and Basketball League was established over 20 years ago with the cheer portion being added in 2002. In recent years, the program has been functioning under the budget and supervision of the CONTINUED ON PAGE 28

or cheer portion of the program. The League typically runs over the course of four weeks in the beginning of the spring semester, ending with a tournament style championship game in the McKale Center. This is the highlight of the season as our participants have the opportunity to take center stage on the same basketball court where the Arizona Wildcats basketball teams and cheerleaders play and perform. Leading up to this moment, UA Students host basketball practices for about two hours once a week to get their team ready for the big day. During these times, the basketball players learn the basic skills and principles of basketball, with an emphasis on sportsmanship and overall participation. As one can imagine, the range of ability with each player varies from first timers to students who eat, sleep, and breathe basketball. In order to make sure that each team remains competitive — since there is no cap on how many Tucson youth participants we have in our league — we have established a scoring system that parents fill out during registration. If a parent is unfamiliar or uncertain of their child’s basketball abilities, they can bring them to the UA Rec center to have them evaluated by our coaches and student directors. Cheer, on the other hand, is more of a one team, one-unit practice session for the group. Typically, the unit gets together for about three hours on Saturdays and performs during halftime at the basketball games. Like basketball, cheer also focuses on basic cheer skills, but emphasizes participation and sportsmanship in working as one team. In order to maintain this great program the League relies heavily on the participation of our UA Wildcat students. Last year, our cheer and basketball coaches recorded between 42-55 service hours, while our scorekeepers recorded an average of about 10 hours. Overall, this program is a win-win situation for the UA and the Tucson community. We are proud that it has continued to stand the test of time, but even more proud to see past league participants return and eventually contribute to the program when they become Wildcats.

NEW UA CAREER DEVELOPMENT PLATFORM

PUT HANDSHAKE TO WORK FOR YOU! By Kim Mathie, Marketing & Communications Specialist, Student Engagement & Career Development

Last summer, Student Engagement & Career Development (SECD) launched the UA’s new career development platform, Handshake — which replaced Wildcat JobLink. Since then, UA Students in Handshake are outpacing students at peer institutions:

>

“Students need a career tool that is intuitive to use, like their favorite websites, and that provides ample opportunities to connect with internships, jobs, and career events that they actually want.” — Abra McAndrew, Assistant Vice President, Student Engagement & Career Development

they’re logging in and activating their accounts, completing their profiles and sharing their profiles with other UA students at a higher rate than other large universities using Handshake.

THE RIGHT TOOL FOR THE RIGHT JOB (FORGIVE THE PUN) Handshake allows students to easily search and apply for on-campus jobs, internships, and full-time opportunities with employers recruiting UA students. “Students need a career tool that is intuitive to use, like their favorite websites, and that provides ample opportunities to connect with internships, jobs, and career events that they

actually want,” says Abra McAndrew, Assistant Vice President, Student Engagement & Career Development. “When students share their interests on their profile, Handshake, in return, provides students with jobs and curated content that is relevant and is always updating and adjusting to what students want,” says McAndrew. To get the best results and attract employers, SECD encourages students to complete their profile by adding in their work experiences, skills, interests, and organizations. It can be done quickly by uploading a current resume. Handshake also recommends related opportunities and content so CONTINUED ON PAGE 33

students can expand their net a little wider. “As anyone with a Netflix account knows, there are rewards when you look past the edges and see what else is possible,” says McAndrew. The searching doesn’t just go one way in Handshake. “Employers can also use the tool to search for students,” explains McAndrew. “They can get a customized list of possible applicants. So long as a student’s profile is public, employers can find them.” Handshake will notify students if and when an employer looks at their profile, and students are always in control of their profile’s visibility. Students can favorite employers or organizations to receive notifications when they post a new opportunity or plan to be on campus. Students can also sign up for career events and appointments with career educators and automatically add reminders about them to their calendar so they never miss an opportunity. This past September, Handshake launched Campus Profiles to students. Students have always been able to make their profiles public to employers, and now they can optin separately to make their profiles public to other students on the UA campus. This allows students to connect with peers with similar interests, see how other students are preparing for different careers, or network with those who completed an internship at a company where they’d like to intern. “The peer to peer network is very important among college students,” says McAndrew. “Being able to network with other UA students who may not be in their same classes or organizations, and connect through their career goals, interests, and internship and job opportunities is extremely valuable.” Students can also use Handshake to join Career Fairs, connect with employers through information sessions and workshops, make appointments with career educators, and find different career events across campus.
