REGION 5 DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE Fundraising efforts are once under way for the USDF Region 5 Juniors and Young Riders as they try to qualify and travel to the 2015 FEI North American Junior and Young Rider Championships. The Championships will be held July 14-29, 2015 at the Kentucky Horse Park. It is a very large undertaking to take our group of 8 riders to Kentucky with their horses, grooms and Chef d’Equipes and they need all the support we can give them. If you would like to contribute or help with their fundraising efforts, please contact Joan Clay, our Region 5 Jr/YR FEI coordinator at jnclay@comcast. net or 970-420-0877 or our Fundraising Chair, Julie Barringer-Richers at jabr57@gmail.com or 720341-5033. Gaited Dressage ADA recently added gaited dressage to its schooling show class offerings. Barbara Hanes, a local trainer who specializes in training gaited horses in dressage, instructed a small group of L Graduates on what gaited dressage is and how to review a gaited dressage test. Pam Polydoros graciously hosted the event in her lovely home, and provided gourmet pizza and treats for the attendees. There are 25 recognized gaited breeds in the United States. Typical breeds are: Tennessee Walker, Paso Fino, Missouri Fox Trotter, Saddlebred, and more. Arizona’s gaited dressage community chooses to ride USEF dressage test patterns within their horse’s gaited movements. Barbara began with a power point introducing the gaited horse and slides to show the different gaits, which can vary by the breed. Then the group looked at the technical elements of what is desirable and undesirable. The group watched gaited dressage tests and learned to observe a correct, energetic, consistent gait. Then the group reviewed the balance, suppleness, harmony, and other traditional dressage criteria within the tests. Barbara said that gaited horses are supposed to bob their head longitudinally. Although connection is important, the rider must not restrict the horse’s head movement. After the session the group discussed how to apply dressage methodology to gaited dressage in order to place the class correctly and provide helpful and meaningful comments with the scores. Gaited dressage exhibitors are looking for encouragement from the judges, and their trainers are looking for helpful direction as to what the judges are looking for so that they can advise their clients correctly.

Auditing the “L” Program By Michell Combs

The L Program, a training program which began in 1989, is designed to educate and prepare participants to judge dressage schooling shows. Participants who pass with distinction are eligible to apply to the USEF “r” training program which is the beginnings of the path to becoming a USEF licensed judge. Passing the L Program requires a three-part testing process: a written exam, oral exam and practical test (judging 6 full tests at each level training, first and second). A minimum score is required to pass the program and there is a minimum score to pass with distinction. A participant who passes the L Program is known as an L Graduate. I first participated in the 2007-2008 program. When I decided to pursue the USEF “r” training program I had to retake the L Program since it had been over 5 years since I first participated. This meant I had to audit all of part 1 again, and be a participant in part 2, requiring retesting. In 2016 the minimum scores will increase in order to pass the L Program with distinction. The L Program is not just for judge education. It is also perfect for anyone who is training or showing. Auditing is as informative as participating! In part 1 session A with Bill Solyntjes, we spent two days reviewing the L Program, learning expectations of judging, judging methodologies and biomechanics. My bullet point notes are listed below. • A judge must know the USEF rules pertaining to showing and dressage • A judge must know the rules for errors, and what is and is not an error • A judge must understand the meaning of the marks and half marks 0.5 -10.0 • A judge must understand the relevance of biomechanics. “By biomechanics we mean the way that muscles move bones to produce and sustain various forms of action: as regards the horse, mainly locomotion; as regards the rider, mainly position and giving of aids.” Baron von Blixen-Finecke • There must be a general standard for the gait score and how to arrive at it • A judge has to utilize a standardized methodology so the class can be placed correctly • In part 1 session B with Axel Steiner, we spent two days reviewing how to be a good judge, understanding the purpose of each level, evaluating a horse’s gaits and differentiating essence vs criteria. My bullet point notes are listed below. • A judge should be approachable • A judge should encourage the rider • A judge should reward, not punish “but keep it in the ball park” • A rider should not underestimate the importance of the centerline to halt. The judge can view how straight the horse is and how relaxed the rider is. • In the loops, the judge must really pay attention to the changes of bend – emphasis on s in changes • A judge must understand the directives of each movement • A judge should not give a score too early • A rider should be cognizant of trying to fix a problem in a movement. For example, frequently adjusting the angle in a shoulder-in makes things worse resulting in an inconsistent angle and an unhappy horse. APRIL 2015 | THE CENTERLINE | 15

• A judge must be able to tell if the left or right side of horse is better • The first time a judge sees a problem (i.e., wrong canter lead) the judge should be lenient. However, if that problem resurfaces a second or third time, each additional time the score will be even lower for that same problem. • The rider should not underestimate the value of preparation: from preparing to ride a corner, diagonal, transitions, etc. In Part 1 session C with Janet Foy, we spent two days reviewing the collectives, fine-tuning our comments and score (methodologies) and developing the further remarks summary of the test. My bullet point notes are listed below. • A square halt is not required for a score of 7 • In the free walk contact is not required • In the free walk how low the neck goes isn’t as important as how he is using his neck and back • A judge should try to have some positive comments on the test • A judge must know the essence of the movement • In a lengthen stride or medium pace, freedom can be used to increase the gait score, but never to lower it • What belongs in impulsion “can he do it” must be clearly differentiated from submission “will he do it” • A judge must understand the purpose of each level and not write something that is inappropriate • A judge must notice if the shoulders are rolling or lifting, as well as learn many more visual indicators • A judge doesn’t count the number of steps in turn on the haunches • Further remarks should not be generic, if you could say one thing to save the rider’s life, what would it be? The participants in the program have their work cut out for them! As they are discovering, there is a lot to organize visually and mentally in order to see, understand and articulate what happens inside the ring. There is an abundance of literature and video information about the L Program readily available so I hope that these brief bullet points are insightful.

Born and raised south of Munich, Germany, Verena grew up riding Dressage. She trained with both local and international trainers in Germany throughout her younger years, training the Lusitano that she owned with her mother to the Grand Prix. At 18, she moved to Spain for two years to ride for and train with a rider and clinician from the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain. After her education in the classical school, she returned home to Germany where she managed a large training facility and worked with horses of all breeds and riders of all skill levels from Training Level to the FEI levels.

Verena's goal as a rider, trainer and instructor is to help both the horse and the rider rise to their highest potential with an emphasis on correct basics and application of the classical principals of dressage training. She has a limited number of spaces remaining on her training roster and is accepting horses and riders from Training Level to Grand Prix at Scottsdale's Premier Dressage Training Centers, Bar A Ranch and El Samaritano Equestrian Center. With training programs that can be customized to fit individual requirements, you can start achieving your goals now! Call 208-680-2173 to learn more.

Barn Tip: Apply Reflective Decals On dark roads at night, other drivers may only see your reflective tape and trailer lights, If you lose your lights your trailer may not be seen at all. Does that thought scare you? It should! Enhance on-road safety and increase your trailer’s nighttime visibility with reflective decals, reflective pictures and reflective signage. “Caution Horses” decals let other drivers know you’re hauling live cargo, so you’ll need more room to maneuver than other vehicles, and also enhances visibility. “Place reflective decals all over your trailer’s back and side panels,” said trailering expert Rebecca Gimenez, PhD. “Also apply decals to the inside of the back doors and ramp. That way, you can be seen even if you have to open the doors.” Brakes and lights are notorious for failing; this is your backup plan.

Good luck trailering pro! Tip? watters4@cox.net
