How I Used My ADA Scholarship By Marji McFadden
As a first-time recipient of the ADA scholarship, I wanted to ensure that I used my scholarship award for an activity that would provide me with longlasting benefits. Initially, I considered riding with a well-respected clinician but ultimately decided on a rider fitness program. After careful research, I found the right program for me: Equifitt, taught by Heather Sansom of Ottawa, Canada. I had found numerous references to Heather and her work on the internet, and I was particularly impressed by one of her articles in which she gave a clear bio-mechanical explanation of the forces which affect a rider’s position in the saddle. After reading that article, I decided to give Heather a call. Speaking with Heather on the phone, I found her professional, personable and knowledgeable. We discussed her various fitness packages and the details of conducting our sessions via Skype from our respective homes. After sending Heather the required paperwork and a video of me riding, we met for our first session, which was primarily an assessment of my existing exercise program and postural issues which were adversely affecting my riding. I was quite impressed with the thoroughness of the assessment. Heather asked me to demonstrate all the exercises which I had been doing at home for the past several years but had become less effective over time. She liked all the exercises, which focused mainly on core strength and stability, but said that I had reached my plateau with those exercises and needed new ones. Furthermore, Heather noted that my shoulders were extremely tight due to my long hours on the computer doing translation work and that my calves and hamstrings were also very tight. She even noted some upper body asymmetry of which I was completely unaware. Before the session ended, she prescribed a set of exercises for my weak areas and several stretches for my tight muscles. The next session focused on building additional strength and flexibility. Heather completely revised the exercises she had given me in our first session. Although I was quite surprised by the complete revision, I enjoyed trying the new exercises, which again challenged my entire body. The stretches, however, Photo provided by Marji McFadden

REGION 5 DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE Hope everyone is doing well and enjoying their horses and ponies. They are truly a blessing in most of our lives and even a quick snuggle or scratch helps bring us happiness and peace. The USDF Executive Board Spring Meeting took place near the end of April at the USDF offices in Lexington, Kentucky and we had a productive couple of days. This year I was able to enjoy a wonderful walk in the Horse Park with my mother each morning and we explored the Rolex cross country course and the museum grounds and it made it a little easier to work through the meetings. We had a very ambitious schedule but we actually made it through it completely for the third year in a row – it’s getting to be a great trend. George Williams and Stephan Hienzsch opened the meeting with a status update on the organization since we had last gathered in person at the USDF convention in December, 2015. We looked at the membership numbers for 2015 versus the last few years once again and it appears that due to the National Championships there is in increase in Participating Memberships but unfortunately that is not the same case for Group Memberships. Membership overall is down just a little again in general. We came in under budget again for our fiscal year ending March 31. Congratulations to our staff and treasurer, Steve Schubert, for helping us accomplish this. We discussed some long term giving plans, investments and several other items to help with the longevity of the organization. Several wonderful educational programs were given approval for the USDF Convention in December. Be sure to mark your calendars and plan to join us November 30-December 3, 2016 in St Louis near the Arch. It will be a nice mix of business meetings and educational sessions. In 2017 we will travel to Lexington, Kentucky and closer to our main USDF office to save some expense.

remained the same. In addition, Heather advised me to start 20 to 30 minutes of power-walking / jogging two days a week for aerobic exercise. Prior to the following session, I sent Heather a new video of me riding. The improvement in my lower leg was already evident! In this session, Heather revised my exercise program yet again to challenge me further and prescribed additional exercises from her e-book Killer Core Workout for Riders. She then suggested we do the next session at my barn so that she could provide me with immediate feedback and instruction in the saddle. In the meantime, I needed to find an assistant for the session with a Skype-enabled tablet, which fortunately was fairly easy. With my assistant ready with his Skype-enabled tablet and my horse Baci tacked up, we started my mounted session. First, Heather assessed my position in the saddle at the halt. After noting some tension in my back and shoulders, she asked me to dismount so that she could guide me through a five-minute series of pre-ride stretches, starting from my ankles and 10 | THE CENTERLINE | JUNE 2016
extending upward to my shoulders. Once back in the saddle, Heather re-evaluated my position in the halt and instructed me to drop my shoulders, engage my core, find my seat bones, and lift my toes. Keeping my new position in mind, I then rode forward in the walk. After a few circles, Heather asked me to halt and do a rein-back in my new position. Baci’s response was remarkable: his rein-back had never felt so correct and easy! After a few more rein-backs, Heather asked me to trot. Given Baci’s bouncy trot, I found it quite challenging not to revert back to my old bad habits; nevertheless, I was determined to succeed! With our session about to end, Heather suggested I practice my new position a few more minutes on my own before dismounting. The next session Heather and I connected from our respective homes. Based on her findings during the previous mounted session, she assigned me a new set of very challenging exercises to further strengthen the muscles I needed to maintain a correct position in the saddle. Heather also admonished me to frequently assess my position in the saddle and adjust myself as
How I Used my ADA Scholarship (cont) needed. Fortunately, my trainer Missy Gilliland has been a huge help in reminding me when my position needs adjusting, both in my lessons and at shows! Given my positive experience with Heather, I decided to take advantage of her Spring Top-Up promotion. In these sessions, she assigned me new exercises to further challenge me and add variety to my fitness program. With a lengthy list of exercises in hand, I imagine I’ll stay challenged and interested for a long time to come! I would definitely recommend Heather to any rider who wants to improve her position in the saddle and is comfortable working via Skype. “Thank you ADA for awarding me this scholarship to make my sessions with Heather Sansom of Equifitt possible. It was a very rewarding experience which will significantly benefit me over time!” Marji McFadden on Baci

Axel Steiner Discusses By Michell Combs
the Dressage Test Collective Marks
The final session of the L Program, Part 1, took place over the beautiful weekend of April 16-17 at Central Arizona Riding Academy. Session C provided an overview of the Collective Marks: Gaits, Impulsion, Submission, Rider’s Posture and Alignment and Rider’s Effective Use of the Aids. Alex Steiner was the weekend’s instructor. Axel retired from his FEI 5* status due to the FEI age regulations. He is an active USEF “S” judge, provides clinics throughout the country, is on the USDF “L” faculty, and is a USEF judge examiner. Axel is also now a commentator for dressage events. Before starting the session to explain the Collective Marks, Axel told the group that the role of the judge is to “correctly place the class based on quality of performance”. He also said that judges should sparingly use the half marks (.5’s). He told the L Participants to “make up your mind”. Collective Marks on the test sheet provide a summary of the overall performance. Judges consciously make a point about the horse’s or rider’s training gap in the section. The scores are assigned with thoughtful consideration. The Collective Marks section is an important part of the final score, counting from 15%-30% of the total.
Gaits
The gait score evaluates the freedom and rhythm of the horse’s movements in walk, trot and canter. Some judges think of a score for each gait and then divide by 3 to come up with the score. Other judges have a general feel of what a 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, etc. is for them. The reason a lateral pace is scored harshly is because it is the judge’s job, through the scores and comments, to protect the horse. Axel says that a horse with a pure walk (4 beat), trot (2 beat) and canter (3 beat) should never receive less than a 5 in the gait score.
Impulsion
The impulsion score evaluates the horse’s desire to carry itself forward. The judge evaluates the elasticity of the steps, the suppleness of the back and engagement of the hind quarters (engagement is the flexion of the grounded hind leg, and lowering of the croup). As every L Participant knows, the walk has NO impulsion. Axel brought up discussions about what the impulsion score may be through evaluating different movements. For example, the group saw video and live demonstrations of lengthened strides and medium paces. Axel explained to the group what a 16 | THE CENTERLINE | JUNE 2016
good movement was, versus seeing the horse’s hind shoes and noticing the hocks are out. He explained that if the hocks are out, the horse is not stepping under enough.
Submission
There is a general saying that the more impulsion your horse has, the more submission your horse needs. There are many pieces involved in evaluating the horse’s submission, such as willing cooperation, harmony, attention and confidence, acceptance of the aids, straightness, lightness of the forehand, ease of movement and collection (at second level and above). Submission isn’t a word to mean subservient. Submission demonstrates that the horse understands what is being asked and then promptly, willingly and confidently reacts to the rider’s aids without negative tension. Negative tension and resistance will lower the submission score. Although all parts of the test can have an influence with this section, the group watched circles and lateral movements to demonstrate the horse’s ability, confidence and precision in the execution of the movements. For example, the group observed correct bend in the circle, alignment and reach in the leg yield, to lower and engage the hindquarters showing lightness and mobility, and self-carriage for the shoulder-in.
Rider
There are two scores assigned to the rider in the Collective Marks. One score is evaluating the rider’s posture and alignment. “If the rider’s core is not strong enough, he or she will be in deep trouble,” Axel said. “The rider has to be as much an athlete as the horse.” The video presentation showed the various typical rider postures. The group saw the ideal form and then the deviations, such as perching forward or leaning back or the “chair seat”. Axel asked the group to notice, “If you cut off the reins, would the rider fall off?” A rider can have correct posture, but the second rider evaluation determines the score on his or her effect on the performance. The score evaluates the JUNE 2016 | THE CENTERLINE | 17
rider’s correct and effective use of the aids. This is in regard to the rider’s timing of the aids and correct geometry. It’s the rider’s job to make the horse look as good as possible, Axel asked, “Did the rider show the horse to its best advantage?” He said that it’s not the horse’s job to make the rider look good. Axel didn’t spend time reviewing the “further remarks” which is the written summary at the very end of a dressage test. He thought the L Participant binder fully covered that. A bonus for the group was on Saturday evening when Sue Curie provided a brief presentation on judging the musical freestyle. She discussed freestyle rules and had the group look at movements to music to evaluate if the music enhanced or distracted from the performance. As always, the group was very appreciative to the brave demonstration horse and riders. Without them learning wouldn’t be as effective. Thanks to Dori Vlatten-Schmitz and her amazing volunteers for a wonderful and coordinated weekend.
Nuggets Does your trainer or clinician or fellow rider have some quotes or pearls of wisdom that he or she states that crystallize a concept for your riding? If so, please email them to centerline@azdressage.org and they will be considered for publication.
“Your corners and short sides are what make your movements. Nine times out of 10, you have to do something out of a corner. If you ride a bad corner, you ride a bad movement.” Charlotte DuJardin

Barn Tip: Trailer Tips for the Arizona Summer At some point, all riders will have to trailer horses. Whether it is a short jaunt for lessons or a long trek in the Arizona heat, it is important that you provide your horse with a comfortable and safe ride. Here are a few ideas to insure that your horse travels like a VIP: 1) Ventilation is a must – It is surprising how much body heat horses generate and how quickly they can turn a cool trailer into a sweat lodge. Always open every window and all vents in the forward position on your trailer BEFORE starting your journey. Good ventilation is important for your horse’s respiratory health so do not forget to provide it on the trailer. 2) Soak hay - Horses tend to drink little to nothing when they are on the trailer. This is especially bad in Arizona. Simply soak your horse’s haynet in a large plastic trash container the night before a long trip to help your horse stay hydrated. When horses are yanking hay out of their haynets, the air can get dusty but if the hay is soaked it is a total nonissue. If your trip is long enough trip to need more than one haynet, carry extra soaked haynets in large plastic yard bags. Use the soaked hay promptly so it does not mold. 3) Offer water with Gatorade – Not all horses will drink on the trailer but mixing a bottle or a few scoops of powered Gatorade in with a bucket of water is enough to entice a lot of horses to take a drink. The Gatorade also provides your horse with some electrolytes and it is cheap. Start offering your horse a bucket of water with Gatorade after every ride and they will learn to love that special drink. Then on a long trailer trip take a bucket or two, line them with a kitchen trash liner with a twist tie and then fill them with the Gatorade water. The liner will keep the water from splashing out. Offer your horse drinks at all stops. 4) Keep things cool with ice cubes – Don’t let your horses sit in a hot trailer, while you ride in an air-conditioned vehicle. In Arizona the weather can get so hot that even with all the windows and vents open your horses will still be sweating in the trailer. If the weather is hot, throw a few bags of ice cubes under your horse’s feet to cool the temperature in the trailer. Bags of ice are available at almost every gas station. Throw a few bags under each horse. At the next stop pull out the empty plastic ice bags and replenishing the ice with a few new bags. Bed the trailer with shavings so the floor of the trailer does not get slippery as the cubes melt.

Riders are advised that equipment may be checked, including whip length and bits. No entry fees will be refunded unless cancellations are received by the closing date for that show. At management’s discretion, if a horse/rider combination is scratched due to severe lameness, illness or other serious reason after the closing date, the entry fee may be held over to the next show. If not used at the next show, the entry fee will be dead and not refunded. If a show is “oversubscribed”, all riders will be included based on entry post mark date, up to closing date. If there are over entries, priority will be given to ADA members.
I have read the NAC of ADA Schooling Show Rules and accept and agree to abide by them.
