Heavy Medal: Parelli Natural Horsemanship Helps Two Riders Achieve USDF Bronze and Gold Medals By JRPR

In many cases, a troubled, difficult horse becomes an ‘at-home’ project, focusing on nothing more than ridability and sometimes setting aside the competition ring altogether. But for riders like Johnny Robb and Micaela Love, who have experienced unimaginable accomplishments through Parelli Natural Horsemanship, limiting their competitive goals was never a consideration. Both riders recently achieved United States Dressage Federation (USDF) medals, riding their so-called “difficult” horses, Zerbino Interagro and Quest.

ARIZONA DRESSAGE ASSOCIATION Announcement of Next Regular Meeting

July 11, 2016 at home of Cynthia Ganem (for details, contact enews@azdressage.org) www.azdressage.org

Important Helmet Information From ADA Sponsor Greenway Saddlery (Closed SUNDAYS AND MONDAYS from June - August)

Note: ASTM F1163-15 implemented a new standard for 2016, and all SEI/ASTM Helmets sold in the USA had to be re-tested to meet the new standard. This has caused a shipping delay and a shortage of helmets this year. Most manufacturers have started shipping small quantities of helmets but it will take through this summer to get caught up on all of the old orders.

Are You Overdue for a New Helmet? When choosing a helmet, check for the ASTM/SEI label inside the lining. Also check the date the helmet was manufactured, which is listed on the label. In our extreme Arizona heat, plan on replacing helmets that are stored in hot barns, trailers, or cars every 2-3 years. Extreme heat breaks down the styrene plastics and glues that helmets are made of which decreases a helmet’s level of protection.

TuffRider Starter Helmet - $58.95

Also, if a rider has a fall in their helmet - check for damage or cracks on the shell and under the liner inside of the shell. Damaged helmets should be replaced as they no longer provide the same level of protection. All ASTM/SEI helmets meet the same safety standards. The affordable lightweight helmets will provide the same level of protection as the high end imported designer show helmets. Many riders choose the lightweight, vented, dial-fit helmets for daily riding in our heat. If they show at a high level and purchase a high end designer helmet, they often will store it in the house between shows to keep the heat from degrading their expensive helmet. Riders should try on several styles and sizes to compare fit. Look for a helmet snug enough to not slide around. The helmet should fit just above the eyebrow and ears. The chin strap should be snug enough to hold the helmet on the head in a fall. Helmets always fit best with the hair down in a low ponytail. Show ring fashion dictates that in the Hunter and Equitation competitions all the riders hair should be tucked up inside the helmet. For those riders with beautiful, thick, long hair this creates a fitting compromise as the helmet will sit up higher and slide around more. There is an open top hair net available from Real Women Rider which allows the bulk of the hair to be distributed more evenly and can be a better option than putting the helmet on a pile of hair on the of the head. One K Defender Helmet - $209.95

Heavy Medal: Parelli Natural Horsemanship Helps Two Riders (cont) ... After meeting Pat and Linda Parelli at the World Equestrian Games in 2010, Adult Amatuer dressage rider Johnny Robb began participating in Parelli programs, quickly developing a profound respect for the training techniques and the amazing horse and rider communication and trust that the programs built. With Linda Parelli’s help, Robb introduced her Lusitano gelding Zerbino Interagro, also known as Zillionaire, to the Parelli techniques. Before Robb and Zerbino began the Parelli program, Zerbino was known for his insecurities in the dressage ring, and fear of the letters. Now, Zerbino boasts two IALHA Grand Prix Reserve National Championship titles and Robb’s USDF Gold Medal. They are now working towards earning the USDF Freestyle Gold Bar. In addition to the remarkable accomplishments that the pair has achieved in the show ring, Robb and Zerbino’s relationship has developed incredibly, as well. “My partnership with Zill only continues to grow with our Parelli training. The biggest changes I’ve seen is the incredible confidence in Zill now, and the fact that he knows to come to me when he’s scared. We do things that I never thought we’d do,” said Robb. Parelli Natural Horsemanship was an important tool in helping Johnny Robb and Zerbino

After seeing what the program did for her Interagro earn their USDF Gold Medal (Photo courtesy of Susan J Stickle) horse, the next time Robb saw a horse who was considered ‘too difficult,’ she stopped to take a second look. This horse was a chestnut gelding with a tricky bucking habit. He was called “crazy,” but Robb could see something else in him. “I brought him home and my friend and trainer Gary Yeager started working with him. Gary’s patience and kindness brought out the very best in the horse,” Robb explained. “In fact, Gary was enjoying him as a schoolmaster to perfect the FEI movements on, but we knew if he were sold to the wrong person his long history of being fearful and resistant would return quickly. I went to Linda Parelli and said, ‘Hey, this horse comes with some baggage, but he is super talented.’ Linda said she knew just the right person for him.” This is where Robb and Micaela Love’s paths would cross, creating another amazing horse and rider partnership. Love has been a Parelli believer since age 12, but although she always understood the power of natural horsemanship, it wasn’t until meeting Quest that she saw just how much Parelli could do. Love began working directly with Linda Parelli, implementing her Classical Scale of Training dressage philosophy and knowledge as an equine behaviorist to rehab, train, and unlock Quest’s potential. “Since working with Linda to implement the Parelli program in Quest’s training, he has quickly proven himself as the dream horse I have been looking for over the past five years,” said Love. “Working with Linda has given me hope that proper dressage can be accomplished naturally without sacrificing the horse’s mental, emotional, or physical needs.” 10 | THE CENTERLINE | JULY 2016

Since beginning their journey, Love and Quest have achieved several successes both in and out of the competition ring. Most recently, the pair earned their USDF Bronze Medal. Love is looking forward to continuing their training with Linda Parelli and competing with Quest at the Grand Prix level one day. “Parelli offers a clear path to understanding horse behavior and a system to communicate with them through their innate set of values, not ours,” explained Love. “I see no end in sight for Quest and I. I still have to pinch myself regularly to make sure that the fact that I have such a talented horse isn’t a dream.” Whether riders are struggling with their dressage training, hunter/jumper goals, or just developing a bond with their horses, Robb and Love recommend Parelli Natural Horsemanship to riders of all levels and disciplines.

Micaela Love and Quest used Parelli Natural Horsemanship to help reach their goal of earning their USDF Bronze Medal (Photo courtesy of Jerome Love)

“You think of natural horsemanship as its own discipline, but in reality it’s horsemanship that can apply to whatever you’re working on. It’s not really about the carrot stick or going over a tarp; it’s building that willingness and trust with the horse,” said Robb.

Parelli Natural Horsemanship uses strategies to help horses and their owners overcome the panic default, thus allowing the horse to become a more willing partner— able to work through nervousness, tension, and fear. To learn more about Parelli Natural Horsemanship, visit http://www.parelli.com.

Horse for Sale: 2001 Thoroughbred gelding. "Gator" has been trained and shown extensively through second level both professionally and by a young rider with scores up to the low 70's. He is a fun and energetic horse that needs an intermediate rider and does really well in a consistent training program. He has very good ground manners, clips, loads, ties, etc. Only selling because owner is in college and doesn't have the time to commit to him. Gator is a very special horse and we want to find him a good home where he will be able to continue training and be loved as much as we have loved him. Asking price is $5,900 or best offer. Arlene Meyer & Midtway Join Dressage Foundation’s Elite Century Club By Arlene Meyer

My way to the Century Club began late in January when I turned 75. Lois Wittington’s stable is where I have kept my trail horse for over 10 years. Lois mentioned the Century Class to me, and I thought about it for quite awhile because I do not like to show; I get too nervous. After a week or so, I thought I could do this, but only with Lois’ help. Midtway is who I would ride. He is 26 and a “Grand Prix” semi-retired horse. So, the lessons began toward the end of February. I am sure Midtway was wondering who was on him and why. I had to learn how to bridle and saddle him correctly since I had only ridden western! That was interesting and fun. I was able to practice riding him and take lessons off and on. It was wonderful that Lois had a helmet and half chaps for me to use. I bought riding pants, shirts, boots and gloves. I learned how much I didn’t understand about dressage but found it very interesting. Around the beginning of May, Lois said that the Carefree Schooling Show was May 21st so I would have to get some serious riding in. So we did and the nerves were there but I was able to do intro test B. The wind gusts were blowing at about 30 miles per hour and after the final bow we had a bit of a rodeo but I stayed on and received a score of 65. I spend summers riding my horse in the mountains. After I return I will try to take more lessons so that maybe I will be able to do the next level up. I truly enjoyed this whole experience and can’t thank Lois and Midtway enough. I am sure I was quite a challenge.

Barn Tip: Trailer Tips for the Arizona Summer The June Barn Tip was how to help keep your horse cool while trailering in our Arizona summers. July’s tip is ... “Keep things cool with ice cubes – throw a few bags of ice cubes under your horse’s feet to cool the temperature in the trailer. Bags of ice are available at almost every gas station. Throw a few bags under each horse. At the next stop pull out the empty plastic ice bags and replenishing the ice with a few new bags. Bed the trailer with shavings so the floor of the trailer does not get slippery as the cubes melt.” One of our members tried this while trailering back from California. They emptied a couple of bags of ice cubes under the horse in a pile. (I think buying a block of ice would work too). They said the pile of ice lasted a couple of hours and when they stopped they added more. They removed the plastic (so the horse wouldn’t be upset if it started to fly around when it became empty) and kept the ice in a pile (not scattered around) so it took longer to melt and gave off more cooling. WhooHoo, it is simple, cheap and it works.

Tips from USDF for Riding at High Altitude

North American Junior and Young Rider Dressage Championship 2016 NAJYRC July 27-31, 2016 Colorado Horse Park Parker, CO Even though the Colorado Horse Park is located in the foothills of the Rockies and comparatively flat, the elevation in Parker, Colorado is over a mile above sea level; in fact its 5,869 feet above sea level. At this altitude the humidity is much lower and the sun is more intense. Competing at extreme changes in altitude and atmosphere can be an issue if you and your horse are not prepared. The information listed below is to help you understand the issues faced by competitors at high altitude and plan accordingly. Information for Riders:
