Recognition of Service

his past year was full of challenges for many of us. Our club had to come up with innovative ways to carry on our dressage shows amidst the COVID pandemic. Luckily for us, we have the best members and the best group of people who always work tirelessly behind the scenes to organize our shows and make them happen. We wanted to take the time to recognize some of them this year for their tireless support to our organization and our members. At the ADA Spring Celebration Show competitors' party, we recognized Sue and Duncan Plasman for their work as Show Secretary and their continuous support to our club. I am sure if someone wanted to know the history of our club, that these two would be the people to ask! We recognized Jay Chabucos for his work as our show manager. He is the driving force behind our shows organizing them, and ensuring that our dressage community has a positive experience. Another hardworking member of the team that we were very happy to recognize was Phillip Kast. Not only is Phillip our announcer extraordinaire, but also the work force that brings together all the show equipment to the site, and skillfully builds our dressage courts. Continued on page 3

We recognized Kay Lorenzen, as she has been instrumental in ensuring that our club receives the financial support needed to help us bring these shows to our members. Kay not only helps us with fundraising, but she has also served our club as the president of our ADA Board for several years. Another member to be recognized was Meredith Conn Watters. Meredith is our Show Program coordinator. She is always ready to take all the last-minute information and put it together to build our show programs. Our shows would not happen without these special members of our community, and we are happy to recognize them for all they do for our club!

O

ur Spring Celebration Show had many special treats for us that were especially wonderful after a year of almost no showing. We had several vendors, a beautiful photo backdrop, and a washrack completely stocked with Farnam grooming products and complimentatry hoses. The competitor swag bags and awards tables were filled with gifts from Greenway Saddlery and Farnam. And for a special treat, we were entertained at the competitors' party with a wonderful vaulting demonstration!

Meet the Trainer - Julie Sodowsky Name: Julie Sodowsky Julie Sodowsky Dressage, Winter Rose Equestrian Center, 6740 E. Jomax Rd, Scottsdale, Arizona How did you start with horses and then dressage? was horse crazy from my earliest memory but never had the opportunity until I received my Master’s degree in English Literature. I made a natural progression from Hunter/Jumper, to Combined Training to Dressage with a bit of race track riding on the side!

I

What motivated you to become a dressage trainer? I was always serious about my riding. I had worked at the University of Colorado prior to my first marriage and was not hired at OSU when my husband was doing a surgical residency there. I was showing my horses, doing well at the shows, and had people wanting to take lessons and have their horses in training. That gradually morphed into a full blown business which I never turned back from! What person and/or horse inspires you? Hilda Gurney has always inspired me because she has trained and shown so many breeds of horses from big warmbloods to small Arabs and everything in between. I also believe that dressage is an “equal opportunity sport” and that basic dressage is beneficial for every horse and rider. What is your favorite word or phrase when you teach?

“Be patient, not emotional.”

What is your general training philosophy? That we have to understand our horse’s mentality and then apply the training scale to each horse’s unique personality in such a way that there is harmony between horse and rider. Without harmony we do not have the partnership which is the greatest reward in our dressage journey. How do you stay up-to-date with dressage trends or education? Educational seminars, clinics and online learning tools. What do you do in addition to teaching? I have received the USDF Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medal. I have trained and shown many different breeds of horses from scratch to the FEI levels and received many USDF Horse of the Year and USDF Breed Awards. I judged as a USEF R dressage judge from 2004 – 2016.

8 | THE CENTERLINE | APRIL 2021

What or who is your support system? My husband, Juan Lopez Torres, and clinicians I’ve worked with. What animals do you have aside from horses? Dogs, cats, and birds! What is your favorite activity in your non-horse time? Attending Luke Bryan concerts and meeting up with my friends that are also Luke fans. What will you do when you retire? LOL! I will probably never retire!

Meet The ADA Volunteer - Joy Hoffman Do you have a horse and dressage background? I recently bought an 11 year old QH mare. My background is many years of dressage and combined training. I got my first pony at 6 years old and began doing combined training and dressage with a different pony and an OTTB at 16 years old. I have shown through Second Level dressage and Training Level eventing. What motivated you to become an ADA volunteer? I knew my horse addiction would come back once I moved to Arizona and wanted to get back into horses. I volunteer because since I am not showing now, it is fun to volunteer since without volunteers these shows and events do not happen. There will be a day I show and will not be able to volunteer. What is your favorite volunteer position/job? I enjoy being a runner the most. I get my exercise, get to talk to people (I’m very social), and watch everything. What person and/or horse inspires you? The person who inspires me the most is Denny Emerson. I know he is an eventer but I love how on Facebook he is constantly making people think and re-think all kinds of topics related to horse care, training, and showing. How do you stay up-to-date with dressage trends or education? I am very old school having just got back into the field. I have joined ADA/USDF and like to read as much as I can. What do you do in addition to volunteering? I work full-time for a software company, getting back into riding shape, hiking, and writing a number of books (adult fiction, children’s fiction, and non-fiction). My nonfiction book is about baseball strategy and how it can be applied to business. What animals do you have? I have an 11 year old QH mare named Athena. What is your favorite activity in your non-horse time? Other than hanging out with friends, hiking and writing. What was the last book you read? Non-fiction – "Change Up" (How to Make the Great Game of Baseball Even Better) by Buck Martinez Fiction – "Should Have Seen It Coming" by Rick Tuber What TV shows are you obsessed with? I like the weird ones… Lost, Grimm, Fringe. What is your favorite way or place to escape? Riding my horse or hiking in White Tanks.

April Region 5 Message

here sure has been a lot of snow in Colorado the last few weeks! It has been desperately needed and hopefully we will have greener pastures this coming spring and summer, but our horses have had very little turnout due to all the mud the last few months and they are a bit stir crazy at times.

Prize lists will be coming out soon for the 2021 Great American/USDF Regional Championships and we are very much looking forward to hosting one this year at HIPICO Santa Fe in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The New Mexico Dressage Chapter of RMDS has been working very hard to make this show a great success and we are looking forward to having a more central championships for our region for the first time in a long time. Please mark your calendars and plan to join us September 16-19, 2021. For the 2022 Great American/USDF Region 5 Regional Championships, we did not receive any bids. There are some irons in the fire to find a solution that will work, but if you have any ideas for venues with 300 stalls, 4 competition arenas and date availability in September or early October, please reach out to me as soon as possible. It will greatly aid in our expanding our current options. The deadline for Participating Member Delegate nominations is April 15. Our region will have 4 PM delegates for the 2021 USDF Convention in Houston, Texas December 1-4. You can check the status of our delegate nominees by going to the link below. Please check your status to make sure your acceptance is there if you would like to be a PM delegate candidate. If you are not listed and you would like to be a PM delegate, please contact Dorothy Kapaun at dorothykapaun@yahoo.com. Please do not commit to be a delegate unless you know you can attend. There is some financial assistance from our Region for those PM delegates who do attend the convention. http://www.usdf.org/about/about-usdf/governance/nominating/accepted.asp As of March 22, our potential candidates for the 2021 FEI North American Junior and Young Rider Championships August 10-15 in Travers City, Michigan will be finalized. As I write this, we have 8 riders who have declared (6 Juniors and 2 Young Rider). If you would like to contribute or help with their fundraising efforts, please contact Joan Clay, our Region 5 Jr/YR FEI coordinator at jnclay@comcast.net or 970-420-0877. This competition is a reasonable distance for us to travel by trailer, which makes things much more feasible, but we still need your help in order to be able to. If you’re a rider, PLEASE DON’T FORGET TO TURN IN YOUR DECLARATIONS! Till next month! Heather Petersen Region 5 Director
