out of every test. Some judges will even take the time to discuss the ride or certain things they noticed with the scribe if there is time between rides.
The Duties: Scribing is a big job for a volunteer. The scribe must accurately write down all the comments and scores the judge makes as well as make note of errors that the rider makes. These comments and scores come rapidly during the test so absolute focus is important for a scribe. A whole system of shorthand notations allows the comments to be captured quickly. A chart of these comments can be found at the end of the article. The scribe is also responsible for keeping track of the schedule; making sure that the judge is aware of the time and if the tests are running on time, or if they are getting behind. The scribe checks that the test has the correct number and matches the competitor’s number. They must also verify that the test is the correct level and test for the class. If a mistake is made in Scribing Resources: organizing all the test sheets, one can get labeled with the wrong he “USDF Guide for Scribes” is an number or the wrong test sheet is used for the competitor. It is excellent reference that contains a the scribe’s job to catch these errors before the competitor starts thorough explanation of all the duties the test. If that doesn’t happen, then as soon as the scribe notices of a scribe. Download it at usdf.org/ the error, she must tell the judge and then be prepared to quickly docs/ShowFlash/web/generalinfo/ adapt on the y to continue to score the test in a way that the test before/guideforscribes.pdf. There are can be transcribed to the correct sheet once the ride is nished. plenty of opportunities to learn more
T
Do The Best Job: To be the most valuable, the scribe must remember that they are there as an assistant and to do a vital job. Scribing is not an opportunity to sit in the judges’ box for a day of watching tests and getting a private audience with the judge. Chatting should be kept to a minimum and only engaged in if the judge initiates it. Also remember that comments about speci c horses/riders should be held in con dence and that as the scribe, it is not professional to give the judge any information or opinions about the competitors.
about scribing and to gain scribing experience. Many USDF groupmember organizations (GMOs) hold “learn to scribe” volunteer-training sessions. If you’re nervous about scribing at a “real show,” volunteer to scribe for a USDF “L” Education Program participant or at a “ride a test” clinic.
Writing quickly and legibly is also extremely important. Tests are important learning tools for the competitors so it is important that they be able to read all the comments. Those comments should also be exactly what the judge said. It’s okay to abbreviate the comments, but not to change them or paraphrase in your own words. The meaning of a ‘fairly good circle’ and a ‘good circle’ for example, are two different things. Focus on the scores. Most of the time, the judge will give the comments for the movement and then the scores but with the speed of the test, there often is not time to write down the whole comment

rst. A scribe must start writing the comment and then write down the score immediately as it’s given. Once the score is captured, go back and nish the comment. Most of the time, this means that the scribe cannot watch the test but instead must fully concentrate on writing and keeping track of each movement of the test. Tests can move quickly so if a mistake is made, a score is missed, or there is any question about what movement the rider is on, the scribe must let the judge know right away. It’s best to catch any errors or miscommunication right away both on the part of the scribe and the judge. The scribe can also verify what movement is being performed to make sure they are keeping up and to remind the judge if they may have missed a score. Judges appreciate having a competent scribe – it makes their job that much easier. That being said, they don’t expect perfection and everyone makes mistakes. Do your best, communicate and check in with the judge often. They make mistakes too so if you think of the job as a partnership, you both will be able to do your best work and have fun and learn in the process.
Opportunities for Learning: If you have never scribed, it can be a daunting prospect. There are many ways to get some training and experience. The USDF provides a wealth of information in the form of articles, training videos, audio les and quizzes. Just go to USDF, sign into your member page, go to the education library and do a search for ‘scribing’. Scribing a fun and educational way to support the ADA. It can give you motivation to keep showing or get back into the ring and can give you a wealth of knowledge on how to ride a great test. It lets you meet new people and learn from them. If you want to scribe or want to learn to scribe contact the ADA and they can help you nd the learning tools you need or set you up to scribe along with an experienced person so that you can learn the ropes. Don’t be afraid to try it out. It will be the most rewarding volunteer opportunity you can have!

May 2022 Update Summer is here and shows are full swing, as are many educational programs, clinics and fun horse activities. I’ve been blessed this spring to attend some very good quality programs and I’m looking forward to more shows and programs this summer. Our USDF Executive Board Spring meetings have just concluded and it’s wonderful to see all the programs coming forward from our various committees. The new tests for next year are going to be super, and the educational offerings at the 2022 USDF Convention will be fantastic. I hope you can join us this year in Lexington, Kentucky! I cannot wait to see everyone face-to-face. I like Zoom, but nothing beats sitting down in person and sharing ideas, drinks and (gasp!) hugs. The deadline for Participating Member Delegate nominations was April 15. Our region will have 5 PM delegates for the 2022 USDF Convention. Elections will be held very soon! Our Group Member Organizations need to start the process of appointing or electing who they are going to be sending to the convention as GM delegates. As of May 10th, our potential candidates for the 2022 FEI North American Junior and Young Rider Championships August 9-14 in Traverse City, Michigan will be finalized. As I write this, we have 12 riders who have declared (7 Juniors and 5 Young Riders). If you would like to contribute or help with their fundraising efforts, please contact Joan Clay, our Region 5 Jr/YR FEI coordinator at jnclay@comcast.net or 970-420-0877. This competition is a reasonable distance for us to travel by trailer, which makes things much more feasible, but we still need your help in order to be able to. If you’re a rider, PLEASE DON’T FORGET TO TURN IN YOUR DECLARATIONS! I hope everyone stays healthy and happy. If you have news you’d like to share, please let me know, we’re try to get it out and about for you. Happy Spring! Till next month! Heather Petersen Region 5 Director
