January 2022
This past year has been quite the journey with the event that took place on February 13, 2021 in our life journey with Mojo (HS Varado). On January 14th, 2022 Bobbie Lynn O’Hara, (Bobbie Lynn Dressage) cruised down center line with Mojo (HS Varado) in hand, once again! This time she wore “Tails”! The two of them took on their first test at the FEI level. Together they received a qualifying score in the Pre Saint George test. They also sailed to victory with the top score in the Pre Saint James class! It took a little longer for the two of them to arrive to this FEI goal, to even show again and to ride off with their “Tails”… but they made it! We are very proud of them both! 1/16/2022 Queen Creek, AZ The 37th Champagne Dressage Show I & II 2022 Read the full story of Mojo's journey back to the show ring on Page 18.

Qualifying period for 2022 State Championships: October 1, 2021 through September 30, 2022
v $25 Nomination fee must be received before qualifying scores are earned. v Once the horse has been nominated it is not necessary to pay additional qualifying fees on entries. Qualifying refers to Regional Championship qualifying, not to State Championships. Scores are tracked for State Championships, once the horse has been nominated. v You must be a member of an Arizona GMO by August 31, 2022 to ride in the Arizona State Championship Show. Horse Name: Horse USDF Number Horse USEF Number Owner Name Owner Address Owner Email/Phone # Owner USDF number Owner USEF number The Arizona State Championships will be held at the Arizona Dressage Association (ADA) Fall Fiesta, November 2022 at WestWorld of Scottsdale, AZ. For scores to count toward qualification for the State Championships, a $25 nomination fee must be paid for each horse. This fee must be paid before any rides will count toward qualifying. Since only one horse/rider combination can compete at State Championships, the fee goes toward the horse. Multiple riders may qualify on the same horse if the nomination fee has been paid for that horse. If multiple riders qualify on the same horse, one rider only may compete in the State Championship classes and the concurrent Fall Festival show. See State Championship Rule 5. There are two ways to file your Nomination Form: 1. Send the nomination with a $25 check, payable to Arizona Dressage Association (ADA) to the address listed below. 2. Include the nomination and check, payable to ADA, with your show entry to any Recognized show in Arizona-ADA, Tucson Dressage Club (TDC) or any ADA/TDC Recognized shows. Check the 2022 Arizona Dressage Omnibus or ADA and TDC websites for complete State Championship rules. January Region 5 Message I hope everyone had a great Holiday season! We had a productive 2021 USDF Virtual Convention at the beginning of December. Many thanks to those of you who joined us. We had good interaction and discussions at the two Region 5 meetings. Congratulations to everyone who “received” their rider awards during the Salute Gala. Don’t forget there are two more virtual awards presentations coming up in January – on the 22nd we will celebrate the Horse of the Year Awards winners and on the 23rd we will celebrate the All Breed Awards winners. These will be Zoom presentations and I hope you will join in to cheer on our members and their accomplishments. This year, one of the key items that was covered at the virtual convention were the upcoming rule changes, which include the new attire expansion for showing. There was a good presentation on these rules during the USEF Open Forum. During this forum, upcoming proposed rule changes were also covered. Please be sure to leave your feedback for these proposed changes on the USDF Website - https://www.usdf.org/competitions/usefrulechanges.asp. Your input is greatly appreciated. The elections for new members of the USDF Executive Board was another key item this year. We welcomed George Williams back as the USDF President. George was nominated from the floor to run against Steve Schubert and Kevin Reinig. Lorraine Musselman returns as the treasurer, Debby Savage (2), Anne Sushko (4), and Bess Burton (9) returned Regional Directors. We welcome new Regional Directors Noah Rattner (6) and Helen van der Voort (8). The budget for our fiscal year April 1, 2022-March 30, 2023 passed with no issues. For Region 5, our finances are steady. The NAYC kids need to do some fundraising if they would like to use the funds in their account to go to NAYC for 2022. The 2021 NAYC team worked hard to not deplete the account. The PM delegate grant of $200 per delegate was re-approved for 2022 PM delegates. Convention for 2022 will be held in Lexington, Kentucky. If you are interested in serving as a PM delegate, please contact our nominating committee member for Region 5, Dorothy Kapaun. To all of our wonderful Region 5 committee members, your hard work doesn’t go unnoticed and we really won’t be the great organization we are without you! Many thanks to everyone for your support of myself as Regional Director. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns! Till next month! Heather Petersen Region 5 Director

The Heart Attack by Virginia Williams
It was one of the best weeks of our life together. Our trainer had just finished participating in a scheduled clinic
with a well-known dressage coach on a cool February morning in Northern Phoenix, AZ. I looked at my trainer, she glanced at her coach and he said, “You are both ready”. The excitement of moving onto the FEI level of Dressage, just exploded inside of all of us! Here we go Mojo. Here we go!! That night we registered to compete in Temecula, CA at the end of the month. That was on February 6th, 2021. On February 13th, it all came crashing down, literally when I received a call from our barn manager. Mojo (HS Varado) had been found injured in a turnout adjacent to his own. He was bleeding, but stable and being transported to the local surgical center about 6 miles away. I was to meet him there. As I drove the 12 mile route, numerous scenarios were going through my mind. There is a five foot steel pipe fence in those turnouts, how could Mojo have gotten into the run next to his? Where were his injuries? How much blood had he lost? Who found him? Is anything broken? I needed to get a grip, calm down. Calm down for him! I arrived before he did. As the trailer pulled in I searched the windows, making sure I could see him. There was his head, he’s standing, I thought it to myself. Pulled to a stop, the driver got out and opened the side door, that’s when I got my first glimpse at some of the damage. Even with his turnout blanket still on, I could tell from the rips and dangling biases, the blood stained regions across the front flap that this horse experienced something tragic. He was led from the trailer by Jorge, the main groom and staff manager of the barn. He had elected to ride with Mojo to keep him calm and reassure him. It broke my heart to see them side by side in this situation. I was relieved as well. Mojo was in the best of hands. As they came down the ramp I saw some difference in Mojo’s gait, but it was not drastic in any way. I was somewhat relieved. It was not until we got Mojo into the examination bay at the surgery center and pulled back the front flap of his turnout blanket, that I realized the extent of the injury. On February 13th, 2021 all our goals for Mojo and his Trainer, changed! I am sharing our journey with Mojo because I feel his story has a purpose! Only people in the horse world will understand the 180 degree turn-about we had to make on that day… competition and show goals have now turned into Rehab and Recovery. Years of training up the dressage levels has now been turned into clearing drain tubes, wound care, physical therapy, cold water treatments and 24/7 stall confinement. What could have caused such an accident? Once we had Mojo stabilized, we found out through our Barn Manager, that a Mylar Balloon had attached itself to the turnout blanket Mojo was wearing that late Winter morning. Mojo tried to escape form the object, unsuccessfully! In doing so, he tried to jump a 5 foot steel pipe fence, right at the five inch capped fence post. Obviously he failed to clear the fence. His right front shoulder impacted the post, on the corner of the cap, and due to his speed, he flipped over the fence and landed in the adjacent turnout.

A Heart-Shaped Mylar Balloon on February 13th, the day before Valentines Day, was Mojo’s Heart Attack! After three hours of reconstructive surgery by two surgeons, I witnessed my trainer settling Mojo in for his first night at the surgical center. My eyes filled with the tears I could no longer hold back! Seeing her head to head with him in the corner of his stall, told the whole story of how their journey to the FEI level together, might never be experienced. It was heart wrenching, but the important thing was, Mojo is here and we were ready to do all we could to get him the best care and treatment possible for our new journey!!! We changed our goal plan! Put our team together and set up a daily schedule of procedures, therapies, professional services and emotional stall support. Yes, I said emotional stall support. Mojo was going to be in a closed, 12 X 12 stall for months. So, we encouraged other clients in the stable to stop and use the grooming tools we provided to groom Mojo’s face and neck, as he recovered. To this day, I feel that one simple grooming bucket saved him mentally from going stall crazy! Month after month, we faithfully followed all doctor’s orders. Mojo’s injury lost all its hide. It gradually sluffed off to expose his muscle and tendons. It was heart breaking to see the destruction! I would make weekly trips to 2 or 3 different drug stores and buy up all but 2 tubes of Neosporin antibiotic creams so we could coat his large wound after his daily cleanings. We spent over $1,500 on the antibiotics alone! No matter what, we did not alter from our goals. After 3 months of stall physical therapy and total confinement, we could add short walks to Mojo’s daily routine. Our trainer would slowly walk him from his stall, 50’ to the end of the barn isle. She and he would stand and just watch as the farm workers went through their daily procedures of taking horses to turnouts, cleaning and grooming areas. We could tell Mojo enjoyed those moments out of his confined area. He’d bock when asked to return back to his stall. He’d hesitate before stepping back into his 4 boxed-in walls. As his owner, I pulled myself out of the rehab and recovery and just focused on his mental and emotional program. Body messages, some game ready treatments for lower leg swelling, etc. It gave me personal time with him that was quality time for both of us. Isle walks turned into short laps around the small working arena and eventually outdoor laps. We called it “his Vitamin D treatments! He loved getting back outside, in the sun. Sometimes we’d just hang out and watch all the other dressage riders train and condition their amazing horses. Just happy to be back in the environment. Mojo never lost his work ethic. We often thought he was wondering why he was in “Time Out”. He always kept a positive attitude during his rehab. In August, we were able to start mounted walk rides. Our trainer was elated but conservative. We’d come so far in 6 months. The injury was scaring over, new hide was developing, peach fur was starting to develop externally and Mojo’s gait stride was getting less and less noticeable. The wound was healing strong! Our trainer dedicated every minute she had with Mojo, to quality attention in every detail of his new training JANUARY 2022 |THE CENTERLINE | 19
goals. We did not know if we’d ever see this stage of training again. Walks gradually turned into trot work. Trot work into Canter work. By September, she’d gone from Training Level conditioning routines to First, Second and Third level movement exercises. By October, Mojo was being challenged with Fourth Level skills-sets. They were both getting close to where they were in February, before his tragic event occurred. This entire time, I was thankful we did not have to consider putting Mojo down, as in euthanasia. Early on we had the Vet follow-up with a series of X-Rays to ensure no bones had been damaged from the impact Mojo sustained during his attempt to flee from the Mylar ballon. We had prepared ourselves that he may never compete at any level due to the injury and the blown out muscle he’d received from his attempt to jump a 5’ steel rail fence. I programmed myself that everyday would be a bonus. No matter what, Mojo would always have the best care and life possible in spite of this freak event in his life!! My husband and I would do all we could to make sure he’d live out his life comfortably. Today, as I put the final touches on Mojo’s Story, I am over joyed to share that he is performing movements at the FEI level once again. 2022 will be our 2021 for Mojo and his trainer! Ten months have passed since his “Heart Attack” as I call it. It was a pause, a time out, a blink in all of our lives. A long moment that veered us into another direction. All because someone showed their love to someone in heaven or maybe even on this earth. They did this by releasing a heart-shaped balloon into the Arizona sky. Those balloons have to come down eventually… this one landed on my horse. All our lives were changed in that moment by that heart-shaped balloon on February 13th, 2021. Thousands of dollars went towards healing Mojo’s injury. Many, many hours of time by dedicated people were spent at Mojo’s side to keep him comfortable and sane throughout his ordeal. Mojo now carries the scars inside and out from the day someone’s heart landed on his back! He’ll be the one coming down center line with the battle wound on his chest!! Please feel free to share this story. What goes up, must come down! I constantly see remnants of balloons littered in power lines, gutters and in fields where livestock graze. It’s not only a problem externally, like in Mojo’s case, but internally for most ranchers. Sheep and cattle will ingest these balloons and get very ill if not die from them. My request is to THINK before releasing anything into the sky. Maybe it was your fault Mojo spent 10 months healing from trying to escape the balloon you let go? Your ballon scared him so bad, he tried to take flight over a fence so strong and tall, that the impact flipped him to the other side and tore a hole in his muscle the size of a baseball. Your balloon ripped skin off his shoulder the size of a legal pad! Maybe your balloon did this to my horse? Maybe not? If you’d just take the time to THINK next time… maybe planting something solid in the earth would be a better way to show your love? PLEASE, everyone!! Let’s keep it grounded!!
