My Ride With Lilo Fore By Pamela Polydoros
The Lilo Fore Clinic ended not even 24 hours ago, and I feel the urgency of putting my thoughts down on paper, not only from what I learned riding my mare as the Training Level demo rider, but also what I gleaned from two days of auditing. I can still hear Lilo's voice in my head so clearly, as she instructed riders to TROT, TROT TROT, with that wonderful inflection of hers, drawing out the word so you could almost feel it. The same thing with her cue for bend : "Bending - Bending - Bending", drawing out the word so it sounded like the word itself was bending, as she guided a rider. Or, to prompt the rider for rhythm at the trot, she'd make this wonderful clucking sound to a beat, prompting the rider to dance to that beat with her equine partner. I was one of the recipients of the ADA Scholarship, and I used the funds to pay for this clinic. I rode my 4 year-old American Saddlebred mare, Nirvana's Beauty Mark (aka "Pineapple"). This was the only the second time I've taken Pineapple off my property, and she did remarkably well in Bar A's covered arena, with the intercom on and a large number of auditors sitting ringside. I was the first rider on Saturday, and the last rider on Sunday. Saturday morning, when our lesson began, Lilo could see that Pineapple was tense, Continued on page 4

Qualifying period for 2022 State Championships: October 1, 2021 through September 30, 2022
v $25 Nomination fee must be received before qualifying scores are earned. v Once the horse has been nominated it is not necessary to pay additional qualifying fees on entries. Qualifying refers to Regional Championship qualifying, not to State Championships. Scores are tracked for State Championships, once the horse has been nominated. v You must be a member of an Arizona GMO by August 31, 2022 to ride in the Arizona State Championship Show. Horse Name: Horse USDF Number Horse USEF Number Owner Name Owner Address Owner Email/Phone # Owner USDF number Owner USEF number The Arizona State Championships will be held at the Arizona Dressage Association (ADA) Fall Fiesta, November 2022 at WestWorld of Scottsdale, AZ. For scores to count toward qualification for the State Championships, a $25 nomination fee must be paid for each horse. This fee must be paid before any rides will count toward qualifying. Since only one horse/rider combination can compete at State Championships, the fee goes toward the horse. Multiple riders may qualify on the same horse if the nomination fee has been paid for that horse. If multiple riders qualify on the same horse, one rider only may compete in the State Championship classes and the concurrent Fall Festival show. See State Championship Rule 5. There are two ways to file your Nomination Form: 1. Send the nomination with a $25 check, payable to Arizona Dressage Association (ADA) to the address listed below. 2. Include the nomination and check, payable to ADA, with your show entry to any Recognized show in Arizona-ADA, Tucson Dressage Club (TDC) or any ADA/TDC Recognized shows. and she had me just walk her for a bit to relax her. Then we picked up the trot, did a little bit of leg yielding, and did one canter at the end of our ride in a 20 meter circle at A, each direction. Lilo kept it simple and uncomplicated for my youngster with a focus on forwardness and relaxation. One of the things that Lilo wanted to work on was encouraging Pineapple to not duck behind the vertical, which she tends to do when she is anxious, and especially at the walk if given a long rein. She had me shorten the reins a bit to disallow this habit, and it did help. We finished the ride with a good feeling of calmness. Lilo wanted more from the ride on Sunday. Lots of trot, some medium trot, leg yield from one end of the arena to the other, and lots of cantering, both in 20 meter circles and down the long side. We also worked on the shallow loop, which Lilo said would improve the canter quality. Pineapple is not that balanced yet at the canter, and will occasionally switch leads. Lilo instructed me to hold the outside rein steady to help prevent that, and it worked like a charm. Another thing that Lilo wanted to work on was to encourage Pineapple to lower her head a bit and stretch her nose out, instead of wanting to duck behind the vertical. This was happening a lot in yesterday's fast paced lesson. Lilo instructed me to keep my hands low and reach a bit forward to encourage Pineapple to stretch her neck. We finished our ride with a great feeling of accomplishment. Here are some of my notes that I jotted down from auditing that really resonated with me, and I will try to apply them when riding my two mares: • Throughout the clinic, the importance of straightness was emphasized, along with forwardness. Also, the importance of riding figures and geometry correctly, including corners, in the proper training of the horse. • Keep hands even and on either side 4 | THE CENTERLINE | OCTOBER 2021
of the withers. Don't allow hands to cross over the withers. • Push the horse's hind end to the hands. ALLOW this for more forward. Lilo used the word "Allow" often, and with great emphasis. • Only a straight horse is supple, and only a supple horse is straight. • Be aware of where the body of the horse is when riding. • Don't hang on too long. Go to the feeling you want, and then release. • Stay over your hands. • FEEL the barrel of the horse bend (Feel was another word used often and with emphasis). • A bending rein is not a pulling back rein. • Think "self carriage", not "hold carriage". • When riding a 20 meter circle think: "quarter circle, to quarter circle, to quarter circle, to quarter circle". • "Up" thinking. Think "uphill" in downward transitions. • Think about riding the right diagonal pair of legs and then the left diagonal pair of legs at trot. • Raise the expectations of the quality of your horse. • Know what the tendency of your horse's body is. • Do more centerline work. • Have a place that you want to arrive at.
Both having the opportunity to ride, and also to audit this clinic provided me with important new tools for my training tool box, which I am looking forward to applying to my two mares. Thank you, ADA, for funding this educational experience, which I am certain will improve my rides.

October Region 5 Message The USDF convention is just around the corner and sadly, we’re back to a virtual convention this year. With Covid numbers on the rise again, it’s a safer and easier way to meet. We are very hopeful that convention will be back in person in 2022. I hope that more of you are able to join us. Be sure to check the convention schedule and attend the Region 5 meetings, along with the Board of Governors and learn more about how your USDF works. The information and schedule will be posted at.www.usdf.org/Convention/. We are electing a new president of USDF this year and there are two candidates for consideration. Both candidates will be speaking during our 2nd regional meeting at the convention. Your Participating Member Delegates to the USDF Convention for 2021 are Joan Clay, Cecilia Cox, Sarah Lindsten, and Sarah Martin. These ladies will be representing our Region during the voting portions of the Board of Governors meetings, in addition to representatives from each GMO. If you have an opinion on a Presidential candidate or any other things of import, please reach out to the delegates and let them know your thoughts. – their contact information can be found at https://www.usdf.org/about/about-usdf/ governance/nominating/delegates.asp. We will have the USDF Region 5 Jr/YR clinic with George Williams at Hobby Horse Farms in Longmont, Colorado on October 23-24, 2021. Spectators will be allowed this year and we hope that you’ll join us. Thank you very much to Kaite Lorentz for the donation of your lovely facility for this clinic. Congratulations to the folks who will be selected to ride – we don’t know who they are at the time I write this, but it’s great to see more depth forming in our youth for Region 5 again! There are many fun things on tap for education with our GMOs in the near future, so please be sure to check your local calendars and participate in these great opportunities! Till next month! Lessons From The Lilo Fore Clinic The Lilo Fore Clinic held at Bar A Ranch on October 2nd and 3rd was a treat to attend. At each level, Lilo had a way of honing in on the most important pieces of what the horse and rider needed to work on to achieve their best work at that level. Since the rides were in order of level on the first day, with Training Level going first all the way to Grand Prix as the final ride, it was very easy to see the clear result that focused training achieves over time. Lilo had a few main points that she talked about throughout all of the rides. She spoke a lot about the importance of riding with short reins so that the contact is appropriate for the level that the horse is training. She elaborated by saying that a horse that is ridden without contact or in a situation where the contact is always dropped by the rider is being put in a position where they must constantly chase the contact. A horse that has to chase the contact is never working through its body and will end up heavy on the forehand. The contact created with the reins should never be dropped and must be consistent so that the horse can trust that the contact will be there to help them rebalance and maintain selfcarriage. She also talked a lot about creating impulsion and suspension with a forward tendency. These are the tools used to create collection and by using them appropriately at each level, the horse is correctly guided to higher and higher degrees of self carriage. Even at the Grand Prix level, this was a major focus of Lilo’s work with the horse and rider. There were many great learning moments for each of the rides. The following is a list of just a few of the points that resonated with me as I watched. Training Level: • The walk is only as good as the horse’s reach into the connection. • Ride with an appropriate rein length for the frame you want to ride the horse into. • The reins should provide a steady connection for the horse to ride into so that you can help balance the horse. •
In leg yield, the front leg should lead the way.
•
Maintain the horse with a straight neck, even on a 20-meter circle. The inside rein should be
8 | THE CENTERLINE | OCTOBER 2021
very similar to the outside rein. • Even on a nervous horse, work on getting the horse to stretch out. Don’t shorten the neck and punish the horse for being nervous. • Make sure the horse understands to move forward into the connection. First Level: • Expect the horse to be on the bit and have a steady acceptance of the contact. • If your hands are empty, then you have no topline and you are not working the back. In warm-up, do what you need to do to build that “bridge” and fill the connection. • The walk has activity and forward desire, but no suspension. • Correct bending is through the ribcage and is created with the inside leg. A horse cannot bend if it is being pulled around the circle.
Second Level: • In the canter, channel the impulsion into something more, not smaller or less. • Be electric in the walk to get a good canter depart. • Don’t hold the horse in self carriage, instead help them go into self carriage. • A lack of self carriage can be a problem of balance and straightness. • It’s easy for the horse’s shoulders to fall out if place and if the shoulders go one way, the
OCTOBER 2021 |THE CENTERLINE | 9
haunches go the opposite direction. • Third Level: • Ask the horse to be more uphill, with more impulsion. • Ride every stride in trot to get more expression. • Pretend that the horse has more suspension than he does, so that your body communicates that suspension and impulsion to the horse. Like you want to put a little passage in the trot, but still ride this forward. • Allow the horse to “climb up the mountain”, but don’t release the reins so the horse falls down and comes out of suspension. This applies for trot and canter. • Don’t ride the trot the horse gives you, ride the trot you want. • For travers the horse needs to bend behind the saddle, so you need to move the haunches a little in with a little collecting. • Impulsion is not speed, it’s articulation and suspension that then turns into self carriage.
Grand Prix: • Precision and correct positioning will improve your scores by ½ a point. • Canter changes must go forward. Trust the horse and allow the changes to come off the ground. •
10 | THE CENTERLINE | OCTOBER 2021
If a horse cannot do a lateral movement,
it needs more forward and more collection. • Collection is not less; it’s not slower. Collection is creating more volume and scope within a smaller space. It’s up to the rider to get that scope out of the horse and to maintain it with balance. • Collected exercises are still forward thinking. If you miss that piece, your scores will go down. • You just contain the energy you create. You have to trust yourself and trust the horse with the volume you create.
