September Region 5 Message Congratulations to everyone from Region 5 who qualified and competed at the North American Youth Championships in Traverse City, Michigan and the USEF Festival of Champions at the end of August at Lamplight in Illinois! We are so proud of your accomplishments. We are very much looking forward to seeing many of you at the 2021 USDF Region 5 Championships September 16-19 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It is a wonderful venue and a great area to visit. If you have some time to volunteer, please contact Jeffray at mjratgdf@aol.com. We could really use your help. Don’t forget to declare if you’re thinking about attending the US Dressage Finals in November. I look forward to seeing everyone at the USDF Convention in December! We are going to Houston this year, December 1st-4th. There will be a USDF Region 5 meeting during the convention and another one virtually before the convention, so you’ll have a couple of different opportunities to join in our discussions. All Group Member Organization's (GMO) were asked to designate their delegates for the USDF convention Board of Governors meeting by August 31st and if not determined by that date, the GMO president would become the delegate. If the GMO delegate/president is not able to attend the convention, a proxy for that delegate can be submitted at any time up until the night before the BOG meeting at the convention. The advantage for the GMO is that the delegate will be known and can receive communication from the USDF office earlier. GMO Delegates are included on a list of USDF delegates to receive e-mail communications containing pertinent information on issues that will come before the 2021 BOG meeting at convention. If GMO’s have not yet sent in their delegate information, please do so as soon as possible. Till next month! Heather Petersen Region 5 Director

The Art of The Musical Freestyle - by Beth Martinec -

A musical freestyle can be a fun way to show off your horse, your creativity and your personality. It allows you to combine the technical elements of a test while showing off the artistic beauty of classical dressage – the ultimate way to “dance with your horse”. Musical freestyles are not only reserved for the highest levels and can be performed at Training, First, Second, Third, and Fourth Level. Competitors must demonstrate proficiency by receiving a minimum combined score of 63% in the highest test of the level in which they wish to perform. There are a few exceptions to this rule for championship classes and 2019 USDF 3rd Level Freestyle juniors and young riders. More on the subject of eligibility can be found at Event: Date: Judge: Position: usdf.org Competitor No.: TIME

3

Suggested schedule time: 10 minutes per ride

MAXIMUM:

Name:

The entire musical freestyle must be completed in a maximum of five minutes for all levels, but there is no minimum time limit. The timer starts with the horse's move off after the entry halt and salute and ends with the final salute. To enter the arena, the rider has 30 seconds with the start of the music. Exceeding any of these time requirements will result in point deductions or elimination. Judging is done based on two categories, technical execution and artistic impression. Technical execution is the performance of the compulsory movements just as they would be judged in a standard dressage test. Artistic impression is judged based on the components of harmony, choreography, and degree of difficulty, music, and interpretation. Even though it's called a freestyle, there are compulsory elements that are required to be shown for each level. The scoresheet (see example included right of the third level 16 | THE CENTERLINE | SEPTEMBER 2021

Total Technical Execution (150 points possible) Deductions (forbidden movements) Errors (2 points off for each error, not cumulative) Final Technical Execution (150 points possible) Forbidden movements will incur a deduction of 4 points from Total Execution for each forbidden movement, but not for each recurrence of the same movement.

Third Level Forbidden: Any movement or transition found only in tests above the level. Exceptions are listed under Additionally Allowed. Additionally Allowed: Walk half-pirouette (no more than 180 degrees), half-pass zig-zag in trot, canter to halt, counter-change of hand in canter (only one change of direction), medium trot and/or canter on a curved line. scoresheet) lists the required movements that must be shown. The compulsory elements of the freestyle are also limited to only those in the level being ridden or to movements for the levels below. It is forbidden to incorporate any movements from higher levels. The scoresheet lists all the compulsory elements and has a list at the bottom of forbidden elements and additionally allowed movements. Choosing the music is one of the most important parts of putting together a freestyle. The best freestyles have music that is of one genre, style or theme. Music that sounds cohesive and has an underlying theme is scored more favorably than a compilation of unrelated songs. While the tempo and beat of the music does not have to strictly align with the natural gaits of the horse, it does create a better performance if the music is used to accentuate the horse’s movements and tempo, and highlights the technical components of the performance. The second most important aspect to creating a performance with high artistic impression is the choreography. This consists of several factors such as cohesiveness, use of space, balance, creativity and degree of difficulty. Choreography should not be used to replicate something that looks like a standard dressage test that has been set to music, rather it should be a creative combination of movements that creates a beautiful, balanced pattern. Good choreography can be used to highlight the strengths of your horse while minimizing any weaknesses. There is a wealth of information available on usdf.org on the rules and guidelines for the musical freestyle. Just go to: usdf.org/education/ other-programs/musicalfreestyle/index.asp

Can you spare a few minutes each week to support The Dressage Foundation? TDF is dedicated to supporting and growing dressage. By joining us as a TDF GMO rep, we can work together to grow our sport. What is the GMO Rep program? TDF is looking for people to help spread the word about the wide variety of grants that TDF provides for youth, amateurs, professionals, breeders, and GMOs like yours. TDF is looking for a representative from each GMO nationwide and your GMO does NOT have a rep. How does this program work? Reps will be our “on the ground” support to spread TDF information through flyers, posters, banners, and social media. Each rep will receive a packet of marketing materials to take to their local shows, clinics, and other events. Why should you help TDF? As a donor-supported non-profit, TDF’s mission is to support people and GMOs like yours to grow dressage. The more we work together the deeper impact we can have. Being a part of this program also keeps you updated on grant deadlines and new opportunities. GMO Reps for TDF receive: • TDF branded hat, bag, and more! • Special monthly e-newsletter for GMO Reps only • Meet-Ups and invitations to TDF special events including those only for our GMO reps • GMO recognition on TDF website • Inclusion in GMO rep only Facebook group (great for networking!) • Special prizes throughout the year Time Expectations: This program is not meant to take up much of your time. We understand your time is valuable! Normal weeks should take less than a half-hour of your time, even that might be pushing it. Taking items to an event or being a TDF representative may take up more time. As you can see, we want to be respectful of your time. Time expectations will really vary based on what is going on. TDF would like to ask for at least one year of commitment. Next Steps: • Identify who from your GMO would make a great TDF rep or maybe it’s yourself? • Sign-up here: https://bit.ly/3BOfZr9 We cannot thank you enough for everything that you already do for our dressage community. We are so excited to continue to build up our sport and support the amazing people in dressage. Sara Weiss Director of Grants and Programs 402-434-8585 www.dressagefoundation.org
