Endless Options For Gaming & Entertainment During the early 1990s, several tribes were operating casinos in accordance with the Federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act of 1988. However, at that time, the governor of Arizona opposed gaming and refused to sign compacts into law. Unannounced, raids of FBI agents were ordered on five casinos. On May 12, 1992, the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation did a victorious stand-off with the government. Their persistence paved the way for Indian gaming in Arizona. Take a look at this month’s article featuring Fort McDowell and everything that casino has to offer. Our second feature takes a look at Harrah’s Ak-Chin and their efforts in Going Green! Our “Great Games” section is filled with new slots arriving on casino floors this month. PLAYERS TALK

Q&A On Everything Gaming

Q: Why don’t the Arizona (Indian) casinos have craps tables? Some have craps machines but no tables. Maryalyce Skree—Sun City West, Arizona

reel strip background generally changes as well, to the point that some manufacturers actually write the word “BONUS” across the reel strips to avoid any confusion.

A: Maryalyce, there are no craps tables because back in 2003 they were not included in the Tribal-State gaming compacts that were approved by Arizona voters as part of Proposition 202 which established a state-wide framework for regulated tribal gaming in Arizona. Fortunately, there are companies out there that produce electronic craps, roulette, sic-bo, blackjack, poker, etc. so casinos can offer these games as "slot machines" when they can't offer them as table games. Plus, as electronic games, there is no need for dealers, physical chips, dice, cards, etc. They are much more efficient and cheaper to operate!

Q: I play keno on the machines, not live keno. My favorite game is Cleopatra Keno. Would you be able to tell me what’s the best number of spots to mark to win? Also, I was wondering if the result of a game depends on where you mark your spots. Any recommendations on what patterns to do? Thank you. Cindy Kruskowski—Mesa, Arizona

Q: Sometimes I feel like the slot games I play don’t act the same when I’m in a bonus. I really think that the “free games” bonuses are programmed differently than the regular games. Is it possible for the game to change when you’re in a free games bonus? My friend and I have different opinions about this. Debbie Robles—Phoenix, Arizona A: Yes, absolutely! Free games bonuses can be divided into two categories: free games that use the existing reel strips from the base game and free games that use bonus reel strips. When mathematicians program a game, sometimes they change the reel strips of a bonus to be able to control the volatility and hit frequencies. In other words, they can make winning combinations more likely (or less likely) to occur, introduce more (or less) wilds, and even make retriggering a bonus more probable (or less probable). In order to distinguish the bonus reel strips from the existing reel strips used during base game play, regulations in several major gaming jurisdictions, including Arizona, require a visible difference in the symbols used on the bonus reel strips. In addition, a clear statement should be displayed somewhere on screen, on the game, and in the help screen indicating that a change in reel strips has taken place during the free games. In most cases, if you look closely, the symbols have been flipped horizontally and some color change has happened as well. The

A: Hopefully you are talking about the original Caveman Keno on IGT’s older multi-game slot machines and not the new version (which has a drastically different pay table), marking 7 spots is your best bet. One of the most common settings forces the pays for the 7 spot game to be 1 credit for 3 hits, 3 credits for 4 hits, 13 credits for 5 hits, 255 credits for 6 hits, and 2,000 credits for 7 hits. Generally, this 7 spot game has the highest payback percentage in comparison to all the other spots you can play. In addition, the pay for hitting all of the spots is 2,000 credits, the highest non-multiplied award regardless of the number of spots played. Furthermore, your chances of being awarded this win are just under 1 in 45,000 whereas the other spots of 8, 9, and 10 have odds that are about 6X, 30X, and over 200X worse than those for the 7 spot game. The long-term payback for this game is approximately 93.68% and has overall odds of winning once every 4.23 spins. On average, every time you win you are winning just under 4 credits which helps to extend your play session. We estimate that 100 credits is a good bankroll to use in order to try this game. In the long run, you have a good chance of hitting 6 out of 7 spots when you play through all of the initial bankroll for a base pay of 255 credits. To answer the second part of your question, the game’s outcome is not dependent on where you mark your spots. The smart play is to pick a system and remain consistent to avoid any frustration. My team and I enjoy playing video keno very much and we tend to group the spots into a box or we just play rows or columns, but once we choose the pattern we don’t change it! $

Arizona Department of Gaming is Not Amused!

Aristocrat Licenses AMC’s

“The Walking Dead” Engrossing New Video Slot Coming To Casinos Fall 2013 Zombies are about to take over casinos all across America, because slot manufacturer, Aristocrat Technologies, has inked a licensing agreement to bring AMC’s hot monster hit “The Walking Dead” to casinos starting in early fall 2013 which will be coinciding with the launch of the series’ highly anticipated fourth season. The thrilling and chilling new slot game puts players right in the middle of the show’s gritty post-apocalyptic world that includes stunning video clips and images from the show.

Agents from the Arizona Department of Gaming (ADG), with assistance from the Arizona Attorney General’s Office, recently did a sweep of illegal gaming devices at locations all throughout Phoenix and Tucson. They served simultaneous warrants at an array of locations including grocery stores, shopping centers, and a private residence. Agents seized approximately 24 gambling devices worth an estimated value of $132,000, a vehicle, $12,000 in merchandise and over $16,594 in cash. The investigation began when ADG received an anonymous call regarding several suspected illegal gambling devices in Phoenix and Tucson. Arizona gambling statutes indicate that prizes in “amusement” gaming devices cannot be offered as a lure to separate players from their money. Undercover ADG agents confirmed the devices were operating illegally with prizes such as gift cards, iPads, TVs, Kindles, Play Stations and other electronic devices. The seized machines are now being further inspected as they may also have been manipulated to not allow a player a chance to win until a certain number of losses were reached, which is also a violation of the statutes. “There’s a big difference between amusement gaming and illegal gambling,” said Mark Brnovich, Director of the ADG. Although portrayed as amusement-type devices, these machines were engaged in separating consumers from their money with lavish prizes, some too big to even fit in them,” added Brnovich. Evidence gathered by ADG agents suggests possible violations including: possession of gambling devices, benefitting from gambling, promotion of gambling, and possession of gambling records. As the investigation continues, additional charges may be filed by the Attorney General’s office. No arrests have been made at this time. To report suspected illegal gambling, contact your local police department or ADG at 602.255.3888.

Since its debut in October 2010, “The Walking Dead” has become the most watched TV drama in cable TV history. The season three finale set rating records, attracting 12.4 million viewers total, with 8.1 million viewers between the ages of 18 and 49. “Capitalizing on the show’s dedicated following, we have designed a game that will appeal to the show’s audience,” said Dallas Orchard, Aristocrat’s Vice President of Gaming Operations. $

$54,666 Bad Beat Poker Jackpot Hits At Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino

Winning a hand with four kings is a pretty good bet. However, as Glendale resident Thomas Reynolds (pictured on the right above) discovered recently, losing that hand can be much more rewarding. The Valley resident took home the largest share of a $54,666 jackpot when his unlikely loss triggered the progressive jackpot at Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino. Reynolds’ four kings were beat by another player’s king high straight flush at the table. Called a “bad beat” because of the incredibly low probability of losing the hand, it turned into one of the best beats Reynolds could have hoped for. The Bad Beat progressive jackpot at Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino was at $54,666 when Reynolds’ four kings were beaten and the amazing jackpot was split between the nine players at the table with Reynolds taking home the largest share. $

Harrah’s Ak-Chin recognizes one outstanding employee for his innovative efforts By Katie Snyder

E

nergy efficiency has become a goal for most businesses. It’s not often that environmental solutions are framed as economic investments. But in Maricopa, Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino Resort is doing just that—doubling down on one employee’s innovations, benefitting their bottom line and bettering the environment too.

“While there are clearly defined environmental benefits, there are also significant dollar savings by improving the energy efficiency of your property,” said Robert Livingston, general manager at Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino Resort. Jonathan Schultz, a maintenance technician at Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino Resort, was recently recognized as a Chairman’s Award winner, which honors employees that display

exemplary service and demonstrate an outstanding commitment to the Harrah’s brand. The Chairman’s Award also recognizes employees who demonstrate the best customer service and who serve as role models, not only for co-workers, but throughout the Maricopa community. The idea to help Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino Resort become a more green property came more than 2½ years ago when Schultz was first hired as a maintenance technician at Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino Resort, and right away he saw an opportunity that he just couldn’t pass up. “From day one, I realized the amount of energy being used on a day-to-day basis,” said Schultz. “With my electrical background and knowledge of buildings, I knew there was something I could do to help.” It wasn’t long before Schultz had a solution. After analyzing current costs and energy use, he devised a plan that would use modern, more efficient technology to help regulate temperature and properly maintain electrical equipment throughout the property - ultimately saving the casino resort thousands of dollars each year.

How did he do it? “As part of the plan, I started by reevaluating all the slot machines on the casino floor to make sure they were properly installed and not overloading the circuits,” explained Schultz. “Implementing a temperature control system and installing new LED light bulbs also helped with the energy conservation efforts and cutting costs.” And he didn’t stop there. He also replaced the propane heater that was being used with an electric heater that runs on a timer, changed the way the kitchen receives hot water, in turn saving electricity, and even installed metering devices to control water use on dishwashers in the casino’s three restaurants. Overall, the use of the new modern technology and green initiatives helped the casino resort save nearly $60,000! This consisted of conserving approximately 75,000 kilowatts of electricity at the price of $46,000, as well as 658,000 gallons of water, which saved an additional $12,000. And all this is just for one year. “When an individual helps a business take steps to save energy, reduce waste and conserve water, all those efforts, no matter how big or small, add up. As we can see, Jonathan’s efforts have made a difference at Harrah’s, and hopefully have inspired others to look and to improve their community as well.” said Livingston. Becoming more “green” has long been a goal for the Harrah’s brand. In 2007, Harrah’s, as part of the larger Caesars Entertainment Corporation, adopted sustainability goals for all their properties. The initiatives included carbon emissions reduction, energy conservation, renewable energy, alternative fuels, water consumption, waste diversion and recycling. Since then, efforts by the Caesars Entertainment Corporation properties have earned the company numerous awards as well as the reputation as an environmental leader in the hospitality industry. “Harrah’s as a company has a commitment to making a positive change in the communities we serve,” said Livingston. “Thanks to Jonathan’s innovative efforts, those of our other Chairman’s Award winners and our CodeGreen employee program we are able to do just that.” Casinos are unique in that they fully operate 24-hours a day. Between the gaming, dining and lodging, casinos can consume a lot of energy in the communities they are located. Over time, Schultz’s innovations will not only help better the environment and create less waste, but reduce cumulative energy costs, potentially saving the casino millions of dollars. “It’s hard to know where you can improve unless you can really see where you are using or wasting the most,” said Schultz. Continued from page 19

According to Schultz, any business can cut down on waste and improve their bottom line if they want, but they need to start by analyzing costs and energy consumption. His recommendations for other businesses? Start off small. “Making your business more sustainable doesn’t have to be as elaborate as utilizing alternative forms of energy,” said Schultz. “Doing even the littlest things like recycling, remembering to turn out the lights or not letting sinks run can help significantly.” Schultz suggests: Print less to help cut costs on paper, maintenance and ink. Refill old ink cartridges instead of buying new. Go paperless in the office – it is 2013! Keep lights turned off in unoccupied areas. Use water saving equipment instead of water bottles to help cut down on the amount of plastic being thrown away. Shut down computers at the end of the day. And of course, it always helps if you can get the whole office involved.

20 Arizona Gaming Guide | July 2013 | azgamingguide.com

“Being more sustainable and green makes for better business and a better community,” said Schultz. “There are always more things we can be doing to help make our businesses operate more efficiently.” With several more innovations on the way, Schultz is looking forward to connecting employees and customers to raise awareness about the on-going sustainability efforts at Harrah’s AkChin Casino Resort. He hopes to continue implementing new energy-efficient products and green initiatives as the company and technology advances. $

Queen Creek Resident Claims $1 Million Powerball® Prize

O

n Saturday, June 8, Valerie Sanchez decided to get her Powerball tickets from her car and check them for the draw on May 18. She received the surprise of her life when she saw that one of the ten lines she purchased was a $1 million winner! Sanchez is a resident of Queen Creek and the last of three second prize winning tickets to be claimed from the record-breaking $590.5 million Powerball jackpot!

Sanchez is still in a state of shock, but plans to pay off her bills and get a new car. She will decide what to do with the rest of her winnings after she talks to her financial advisor. Her advice to other Lottery players is to “check your tickets!” The winning ticket was purchased at the Chevron located at 1990 S. Alma School Road in Chandler. This is the 24th $1 million Powerball second prize winning ticket sold in Arizona since $2 Powerball launched in January 2012. Fifteen co-workers from Safford, Arizona also held one of the three second prize winning tickets for the record-breaking $590.5 million Powerball jackpot. Calling themselves “The Safford Fortunate 15,” Donna Talley, Wendy Layton and Gloria Ogas claimed the group’s winning tickets at the Lottery Office in Phoenix. Each member of the lucky pool received a check for $46,666.90 after taxes. Talley purchased the winning Quick Pick ticket at the Giant Service Station located at 300 E. U.S. Hwy. 70 in Safford. She received a call from a co-worker saying they had five matching numbers the morning after the draw. When she walked into the store after church on Sunday to check the tickets, the clerk said, “We’ve been waiting for you!” The redesigned $2 Powerball game offers quite a number of appealing features to players, including better overall odds and jackpots that grow bigger, faster. The starting jackpot doubled from $20 million to $40 million and the second prize for matching all five numbers, without the Powerball, increased from $200,000 to $1 million. Players must be 21 years or older to purchase or redeem tickets. $

WINNING WAYS

Hints & Tips

8 STRATEGIES

to stretch your bankroll int o longer play sessions

Video Keno: Basic Video Keno (not Cleopatra, Caveman, or other specialty keno games), for the most part, is a better quarter or dollar bet than the slots. Make sure to find an older IGT Game King with a good pay table. In order to extend a bankroll into a longer play session, pick six numbers to play. The long run return to player is not the best, but the better odds on catching your numbers for wins and lower volatility make a difference!

2

Video Poker: For many, it’s a “must play” during each casino visit. This game, in most cases, has the lowest house margin across the slot floor. Stay away from all multi-hand games as they increase your bankroll requirements and volatility. This also applies to Multi-Strike video poker, it’s an extremely volatile game but offers a better payback percentage than other video poker games. Ultimately, a good paying Jacks or Better game is your best bet here.

Bingo: Avid bingo players already know that for a fixed buy-in, they receive a guaranteed amount of entertainment. In most bingo halls, the minimum buy-in is so low it’s peanuts compared to what most slot players consider a meager bankroll! Plus in many halls the schedule of games is arranged with breaks between sessions. Players are able to play at the casino practically all day long when a hall offers two or three sessions daily.

addition, players may enjoy the solitude of playing at a table alone, but playing at a full table extends the time it takes to complete one hand across the entire table. Wager the minimums at full tables to extend play. For poker enthusiasts, make sure to inquire about low buy-in daily tournaments. They are a fixed expense for hours of play.

cess in arriving with a small bankroll hoping to extend their play session into hours and hours. At the very least, play the progressives without the “life changing” jackpots. Stick to the smaller jackpot systems. Look for progressive games with random entries into the jackpot game or those where even a minimum bet offers a chance to win.

Non-Progressive Slots: Honestly, a sure bet is to play any slot made before about 2003. This means find IGT’s Cleopatra or Texas Tea, WMS’ older games like Lucky Lemmings, Aristocrat’s games are always volatile but Sun & Moon is a good compromise, as immediate “go to” games. Remember to ask a slot attendant for older games on the casino floor if they are not easy to locate.

Themed or Non-Themed Slots: Can’t wait to play Sex and the City, Wizard of Oz, Superman, Deal or No Deal, and so on? Maybe a wait is what is required! Remember that all these themes are owned by a third party, that means the slot manufacturers have to pay a license fee on top of their existing costs. Sure they are fun, but not a good choice if the bankroll is short and a long entertainment time is critical. Play the slots without the big “brand names.”

Live Keno: No matter what anyone says or what you may read online, live keno is the last place to look for a good long term payback percentage. Live keno has some of the highest house edges in the casino gaming industry! Some games run at a 30% house edge or even higher. However, live keno is slow, very slow. The excitement factor is also pretty low as well. The game progresses in the same manner as paint drying on a humid day, but bankrolls last! $

Betting On Gluten-Free The sticky truth about gluten and what some casinos are doing to provide their patrons with gluten-free dining options.

M

illions of Americans suffer from poor digestive health and cope with symptoms such as bloating, abdominal discomfort or pain, constipation, diarrhea and even neurological problems that include headaches, dizziness, fatigue, and lethargy on a daily basis. Doctors now know that one of the main culprits is a protein called gluten that can be found in wheat, rye, and barley. Approximately 15% of the U.S. population has gluten intolerance, but unfortunately many people are never diagnosed! Eliminating foods that contain gluten can make dreadful symptoms start to diminish almost immediately and, in some cases, disappear entirely within just a couple weeks! What exactly is gluten? The prefix of the word “gluten” actually gives away its definition. Gluten is a sticky protein composite that gives products their chewy structure. It’s also the glue that’s used to preserve food for a longer shelf life. This sneaky sticky stuff can be found in all our favorite foods such as cereal, pizza, bagels, crackers, pasta, cookies, cakes, bread and most baked goods. In fact, it even creeps up where we’d least expect it to like in ice cream, deli meats, sausages, soups, salad dressings, gravies, and even some spices such as curry powder and dry mustard powder! The key is to carefully read the food labels and recognize all the terms that directly or indirectly refer to gluten on food labels. Why is gluten bad for us? Since gluten is a glue-like substance, it sticks to the stomach lining and intestines, clogs up the colon, slows down the digestive system, weakens the immune system, and hinders the absorption of important vitamins and minerals for the body. Because gluten is also linked to inflammation in the body, several people who suffer from gluten intolerance experience inflammatory conditions like fibromyalgia, arthritis, and chronic fatigue syndrome. The fact of the matter is our guts were just not

28 Arizona Gaming Guide | July 2013 | azgamingguide.com

adapted to digest gluten and break it down into individual amino acids. And, some people are just more sensitive to the effects gluten has on the body than others. How can a person live gluten-free? Gluten is no laughing matter, especially if your body has a hard time processing it! Thanks to the increasing selection of glutenfree foods, it has become easier for people to eat healthy diets and live symptom-free. A healthy gluten-free diet consists of lean meats, healthy fats such as olive oil and avocados, fish, poultry, dairy, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and whole grains that don’t contain gluten such as brown rice, quinoa, and amaranth. Other grains considered suitable for gluten-free diets include millet, taro, and chia seeds. Alternatives to wheat flour are gram flour (derived from chickpeas), buckwheat (which is not related to wheat, in spite of its name) and nut flours (such as almond flour). Casinos introduce gluten-free options to their menus. Several casinos all across Arizona have been finding ways to provide their patrons healthier alternatives, and that includes offering gluten-free dining options. Apache Gold Casino Resort has several gluten-free items on their menu such as cherry chicken salad, pasta primavera, flat iron steak, grilled salmon and prime rib just to name a few. Guests can call ahead of time to Storytellers Steakhouse at Cliff Castle Casino Hotel and Chef Joanne will prepare a dish specifically designed for their dietary needs. She’s even gotten creative catering to walk-in requests. However, Desert Diamond Casinos truly goes above and beyond with an extensive selection of gluten-free dishes. “Our goal is to create magnificent food that leaves our guests feeling happy and fulfilled, whatever their dietary needs,” said Chef Michael Bujold. Their efforts even extend to their Employee Dining Room which will soon offer heart-healthy and glutenfree options as well!

Desert Diamond’s Gluten Gluten--Free Menu Options The Steak House (Tucson location) Located at Desert Diamond Casinos and Entertainment off Nogales Highway, the Steak House offers a refined chop-house style dining experience set amid the excitement of casino gaming action. Featuring several gluten-free steak and seafood specialties such as the tender bacon wrapped filets of beef with mushrooms in a tantalizing brandy-dijon mustard cream or the Himalayan salt brick ahi tuna with wasabi and pickled ginger. With a warm ambience and exceptionally flavorful culinary selection, the Steak House is sure to satisfy. Gluten-Free Options Include: Himalayan Salt Brick Ahi Tuna Desert Diamond Bacon Wrapped Shrimp Shrimp Scampi Chicken Marsala Steak Diane Kurobuta Pork Chop Pasta Primavera Agave (Sahuarita location) The Agave Restaurant, located at Desert Diamond Casinos and Entertainment in Sahuarita, offers a full range of culinary experiences with their “New” American Cuisine inspired menus. Choose from a varied selection of flavors including favorites like tender prime rib or lamb tenderloin as well as exotic specialties like macadamia encrusted cod, Louisiana Creole pasta, or pan seared venison. They also offer several gluten-free options, such as the cedar plank grilled salmon, crab meat stuffed prawns and the hearty New York steak. Dine in the comfortably casual, southwest atmosphere or go “al fresco” and enjoy the spectacular sunset from the courtyard facing patio - all just steps away from the exciting casino floor. Gluten-Free Options Include: Shrimp Diablo Cedar Plank Salmon Crab Meat Stuffed Prawns New York Steak Prime Rib Filet Mignon

Bet you didn’t know… Gluten is present in over-the-counter and prescription medications, vitamins, lipsticks and even the glues used on envelopes! For those people who want to (or are required to) follow a completely gluten-free diet, all products in all aspects of their lives need to be closely investigated before use!

Nevada’s Oldest Player’s Club

Celebrates 27 Years! At The Pioneer Hotel & Gambling Hall In Laughlin

This July, the Pioneer Hotel & Gambling Hall celebrates their player’s club, The Round-Up Club, turning twentyseven years old! Back in 1986, management at the casino introduced the first player’s club in the state of Nevada. That’s right! The Pioneer in Laughlin had the Las Vegas Strip beat in offering the player’s club to their patrons. This month, the Round-Up Club has a Prize Wheel every day in July. If you earn 1,000 points in one day (by the way a $2 wager earns 1 point and 1,000 points is $5 Cash Back!) you’ll get to spin for more credits, rooms, or food. There will also be Hot Seat drawings every day (except Sundays) during the month. On Hot Seat drawing days, from 1 to 10pm, at the top of the hour the casino gives away $50 in free play. That’s $500 for the whole day! Check with the Round-Up Club for details. Plus, July 19 and 20, you won’t want to miss the $49 Video Poker Tournament with a $4,000 top prize!

A New Lounge & Stores At The Colorado Belle... Plus, A New Look For Edgewater’s Race & Sports Book! New construction was under way at Colorado Belle and Edgewater Casino Resorts. The new projects began just as a massive 1,979 hotel room remodel and renovation at both properties was wrapping up. A lounge providing free live entertainment opened in June on Colorado Belle’s casino floor. The venue now features live bands every weekend and extends out from the Casino’s River Bar toward the casino with seating for almost 50 guests. A long-time fixture on Colorado Belle’s “D” Deck, the Marshall’s Gift Shop has moved to the Belle’s casino floor. The shop is located on the east side close to Chill!, the popular indoor/ outdoor daiquiri bar, and features gifts and sundries. William Hill, the Edgewater’s Race & Sports Book operator, has begun a refurbishing project that will give the book an all new high tech look with twelve 46” screens for odds display, 25 carrels featuring 19” screens and more space at each seat, 50 flat screens ranging from 19” to 80” for race and sports viewing, and ample seating, including seating at new granite tables. The book will remain open during the construction period.

July’s Headlining Entertainment At The Edgewater Country singer/songwriter Clay Walker headlines an All-American Independence Day Weekend celebration in the Edgewater’s E Center. Walker’s July 5 concert occurs between two nights of spectacular fireworks over the Colorado River. The E Center will host a concert by Jeff Bridges and The Abiders July 27, and R&B legends The Spinners will be featured August 3. Each concert starts at 8pm. Tickets for Clay Walker start at $22.50. Tickets for Jeff Bridges & The Abiders start at $27.50. The Spinners concert tickets start at $15. Tickets for all E Center concerts are on sale at edgewater-casino.com. Clay Walker made his country music debut in 1993 with his smash hit “What’s It To You.” Since then, he has sold over 11 million albums, had 11 No. 1 hit singles, four RIAA platinum and two gold certified albums. His current tour follows the release of his critically acclaimed 9th studio album “She Won’t Be Lonely Long.” Outside of the stage and studio, Clay recently released his first book entitled Jesus Was A Country Boy in which he shares his life’s struggles—including being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at 26—and how his faith got him through everything. Walker established Band Against MS (BAMS) in 2003 with the goal of helping others living with MS. Oscar-winning actor Jeff Bridges portrayed grizzled former country music legend Bad Blake in the 2009 film Crazy Heart. Following the release of Crazy Heart, Bridges, a life-long musician, collaborated with Grammy Award winning singer/songwriter/ producer T-Bone Burnett to produce the album Jeff Bridges. Bridges and his band perform music from Crazy Heart and from his albums. The Spinners have acquired twelve gold records with hits on top of both Pop and R&B charts and are one of the few groups who have four lead singers. CASINO NIGHTLIFE

Throwback Thursdays At Arizona Room Patio Grill By Ramses Ja

Latin Dance Lessons

At Casino Arizona Latin Fire Dance Nights & Retro DJ Weekly at Arizona Room Patio Grill Casino Arizona’s beautiful new Southwestern cantina, The Arizona Room Patio Grill, is not only ideal for watching live music and sports entertainment, but for dancing as well. On May 20, the restaurant began hosting Latin Fire Dance Nights. Former ASU Latin Ballroom Exhibition member, Jack Mann and professional dancer Nikki DiGiorgio have teamed up as the Latin Fire Dance Duo to teach free classes every Monday and Tuesday evening. The weekly lessons are designed to be a fun and easy experience for all and run approximately two hours from 6-8pm. The class is open to beginners, intermediate and even the most experienced dancers. Anyone looking for a fun and healthy way to get active and meet new people will want to check out Latin Fire Dance Nights. Additionally, every Thursday night guests can show off their skills learned during Casino Arizona’s Throwback Thursdays. Resident disc jockey, DJ Perry, takes the stage every Thursday night to spin the best dance music from the 70s, 80s and 90s. The Arizona Room Patio Grill also regularly offers a delicious dinner menu featuring a variety of southwestern-style foods, specialty cocktails, wines and craft beers. The restaurant is open daily from 11am to 2am. For more information on Latin Fire Dance Lessons, Throwback Thursdays and the eatery, please visit their website at casinoarizona.com.

H

ello, all! I’m really excited about this month's installment! Recently, my travels took me to a brand new cantina restaurant at Casino Arizona! I was able to grab a bite from their menu full of bold, Southwestern flavors, watch a game on their massive TVs and, in general, enjoy the openness of the architecture. This is the Arizona Room Patio Grill … a cozy indoor/outdoor spot that is just perfect for gaming breaks, gourmet dinners and everything in between! It wasn't until night fell, however, when things began to take on a life of their own! I had been invited here by a good friend and former coworker of mine named DJ Perry and it was no ordinary night! This was Throwback Thursday, which meant that at 9pm Perry would take the stage (yes there is also a stage), set the lights (yes there is an awesome lighting system), and play the songs that would ultimately get us all on the dance floor (yes there is an oversized dance floor)! As the name suggests, Throwback Thursday is all about music from a better time! Having worked with Perry at Mega 104.3 FM and 101.1 FM The Beat (both old-school based stations) for several years, I was already familiar with his expertise on the turntables. The crowd that gathered for a night out was, however, pleasantly surprised! Perry treated all of us to the most danceable hits from the 70s, 80s and 90s, and the packed dance floor was a sure sign that his selection was second to none! Because of the openness of the Arizona Room Patio Grill, I traveled freely from the dance floor to the patio where I could socialize by the gorgeous pond and enjoy the cool night air and then back inside to the full bar, a majestic sight all by itself! I could really tell that a lot of thought and creativity went into crafting the ambiance of this place! I then traveled to one of the booths for a cozier seat. Here I was treated to the videos being displayed on the screens that earlier played host to the sporting events I watched. After a bit, the music began calling me back to the dance floor … and I responded! Perry is THAT good! Once 1am came, the party began to wind down. Perry closed out his set in a most epic fashion and many of the partygoers began to settle into their booths or pour out onto the casino floor to win some early morning coin! While I had a great time at this place, I must admit that there was one thing missing … YOU!

FUN FACTS

Since metal was both an expensive and scarce commodity across Europe during the Middle Ages, most household dishes and jars were made out of an orange clay called “pygg.” People put away their money for safe keeping in these “pygg” jars. Eventually, they just became known as “pygg banks.” As a visual pun, potters just began shaping the “pygg banks” into the shape of a pig as a joke. Paper currency is composed of 75% cotton and 25% linen. Red and blue synthetic fibers are distributed evenly throughout the paper. Prior to World War I, the fibers were made of silk. Martha Washington, wife of George Washington, appeared on the face of the $1 Silver Certificate in 1886 and 1891 and the back of the $1 Silver Certificate in 1896. She is the only woman in history to have ever appeared on a U.S. currency note. U.S. currency is green because that was the color most readily available in large quantities. Green is also relatively high in its resistance to chemical and physical changes. The approximate weight of one bill, regardless of the denomination, is one gram. Since there are 454 grams in one U.S. pound, it would take 454 bills to equal one pound! A mile of pennies laid out is $844.80 which means America is about $2.5 million wide coast to coast.

Here's hoping I see you in the Arizona Room Patio Grill next Throwback Thursday at Casino Arizona! For more information about the Arizona Room Patio Grill, please visit their website at casinoarizona.com. $

Before the days of paper money, Americans traded animal skins including deer and elk bucks! That’s the reason why the word “buck” is used to describe money. The origin of the dollar sign ($) comes from the standard abbreviation of the Spanish Peso (P). The plural form was a large “P” with a small “s” above it and to its right (Ps). Eventually the dollar symbol sign came to be by superimposing the “s” upon the “P.” The hands of the clock on the back of the $100 bill are set at 4:10! Although it can’t be seen with the naked eye, it can be examined with a 20-fold magnification. There are no records explaining why that particular time was chosen. The office of Currency Standards will replace any torn or damaged currency if at least 51% of the note is intact.

SAMI’S SMACKDOWN

Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell By Sami Becker

W

hen I say “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” I’m not talking about the former U.S. policy on gays serving in the military! I’m talking about people learning to keep their mouths shut at the casinos! Don’t ask a fellow gambler, “How’s it going?” or “Are you winning?” or anything to that effect! They don’t like it, because they don’t know how to answer that question. If it’s going well, they could jinx themselves by saying it out loud and their luck could turn around. If it’s not going well, then admitting it could mean they’ve sealed their fate. Winning at the casino is based on luck. And what is luck? Luck is just chance, timing, destiny, whatever you want to call sitting down at the right machine at the right time and hitting the button at the precise millisecond for a jackpot, or picking the winning keno or lottery numbers! So it’s no wonder gamblers, like athletes, are superstitious. Everything they do, or even what they think, could affect the final outcome!

48 Arizona Gaming Guide | July 2013 | azgamingguide.com

Don’t tell people about your wins (or losses for that matter) unless they ask. Even seemingly innocent comments can just generate feelings of anger, jealousy, and frustration. It’s difficult for a person to be happy for someone else if all they’ve been doing is losing. And, why disappoint someone interested in playing a game by telling them another player won on the game before they sat down? Slots don’t have memories! Each spin is independent of the spin before! Be mindful of what you say while you’re at a casino; especially to strangers you’ve never met before. While gambling, there’s no such thing as an awkward silence. $
