PLAYERS TALK

Q&A On Everything Gaming

Q: During our last trip to Vegas, my wife got a Royal Flush dealt to her. We both play Video Poker and never saw something like that! I was just wondering what the odds of that happening are and how you calculate that? Also, just curious to know what the odds are of getting a Royal if I hold 4 cards and I’m missing just 1? It seems like I’ve missed more Royals holding 4 cards than just holding 2 or 3 cards! How is that possible? Ron Holmes—Goodyear, Arizona A: Ron, the odds of being dealt a Royal Flush are 1 out of 649,740 hands. There are 2,598,960 possible 5 card hands you can be dealt and of all those, 4 are Royal Flushes (in other words 4 out of 2,598,960). Reducing this fraction to lowest terms by dividing the numerator and denominator by 4 results in 1 out of 649,740 hands. Your chances of hitting the Royal Flush increase the more cards you hold to the Royal. I believe the perception is that 4 card Royals are the hardest to get because they make us the most frustrated! When you’re so close and you know you just need 1 card to the Royal, your heart is pumping and you’re sitting on the edge of your seat. We hold 2 and 3 card set-ups to the Royal just as frequently to no avail, they’re just not as memorable. Here are some interesting statistics: When dealt 4 out of 5 cards to the Royal, the chance of hitting the Royal is 1 in 47! When dealt 3 out of 5 cards, the chance of hitting the Royal is 1 in 1,081! When dealt 2 out of 5 cards, the chance of hitting the Royal is 1 in 16,215. When only dealt 1 card, the chance of hitting the Royal is 1 in 178,365. And, with no Royal Flush cards in the initial 5 card hand, the chance of hitting the Royal is 1 in 383,484. Q: Dear Editor, why do some machines not spin when you push the button? The objects just pop up with no spin. Mike Kisluk—Scottsdale, Arizona A: What an excellent question Mike! As soon as a player presses the “Spin” button on a slot machine, the result of the spin and what will be displayed is determined by a software

program in the machine called the Random Number Generator (RNG). The lights and animations that happen after the “Spin” button has been pressed are only for entertainment purposes. In other words, what a player perceives as spinning isn’t actually spinning because on a video slot there are no reels like there are on mechanical games that have actual physical reels. Therefore, slot manufacturers have become very creative in how they present the outcomes on the games. Some games have symbols that just “pop up” as you said, some have symbols that seem to drop from the sky, some appear in a left-to-right motion as if a window shade is being open. The way in which the outcome of a spin is presented to a player doesn’t affect the outcome of a spin, because the outcome has already been determined by the RNG. Actually, anything that a player does after pressing the spin button will not affect the outcome of a game. Some players even feel they can stop the “spinning reels” and affect a game’s outcome by stopping a WILD or a bonus symbol before it goes by. This is not possible! Enjoy the animations that the slot manufacturers have spent so much time designing for your entertainment and know they’re just creative illusions. If we didn’t have beautiful graphics, sounds, and animations on slot machines then we might as well be playing games that just pop up with a message saying “Win” or “Lose” every time we press the “Spin” button. That wouldn’t be much fun at all! Q: I think the IGT Wheel of Fortune wheel is rigged! How come it always lands on one space before or one space after the 1,000 but hardly ever on the 1,000? It doesn’t seem fair and I want to know if regulators check for that? It slows down just to make you feel that it’s going to land on the 1,000. Janet Marsh —Queen Creek, Arizona A: Janet, of course the Wheel of Fortune wheel is weighted! I wouldn’t use the word “rigged” as it seems to imply fraudulent manipulation which is absolutely not the case! I’m sorry, but I hope you didn't think that you actually had a 1 in 22 chance of landing on the 1,000 space. The “virtual” wheel has weights associated with each space. The game is programmed to land on the spaces with smaller numbers much more frequently than on

the 1,000 and other larger numbers. All similar games made by IGT and other slot manufacturers are also programmed in the same way! If they didn’t program outcomes with weights then either the payouts would be much smaller or the bonuses would have to occur way less often! Q: I love your magazine! Please tell me why the casinos are constantly changing out their games? It seems like the popular ones don’t stay around very long and others that aren’t popular just sit with empty chairs? Every time I go to Laughlin, the casinos keep changing out the games. For example, [one casino] had an Elvis game, then CSI Miami (which I actually liked) and now they have Beverly Hillbillies. Yet, Sex and the City is still there and hardly ever played. Doesn’t make a lot of sense! Also, what happens to the Progressive Jackpots that have never been given away when the machines are taken out and are gone forever? Thanks. Carol Schmidt—Buckeye, Arizona A: Carol, licensed titles, like you mention, tend to be either leased or on “participation” at the casinos. What this means is there’s profit sharing between the slot manufacturers of the games and the casinos. Therefore, if one or both parties feel that the game is not making enough money they will replace a title with a new one. Sometimes looks can be deceiving! Although a bank of slots might not have high traffic, the amount of coin-in might still be lucrative enough to justify keeping the games on the floor. On the other hand, just because a slot seems to be getting enough play and is popular doesn’t mean it’s making money for the casino. I do know from personal experience that casinos tend to keep games if they are popular with customers, even if they are losing money on the games, just to keep their patrons happy. However, they aren’t able to do this with all the games. A casino is a business after all! Careful evaluation needs to be made by looking at the numbers in the Audit Menu of the machines to see how they are performing on a regular basis. Then, decisions on games (whether they stay or go) are made by the casino executives. To answer your second question—gaming regulations dictate that any money in a progressive meter that is beyond the base reset value must be returned back to the players. What casinos tend to do is transfer the money onto a different progressive game. Next time you notice a progressive machine gone, take a walk around the floor and see if you can observe any existing progressive games with suddenly inflated values and you’ll know why! The other trick they tend to do is transfer the money from the “old” machine leaving the floor to the “new” machine being installed in its place if it’s also a progressive game. $

New Slots—Scottsdale

Casino Arizona & Talking Stick Resort

Aladdin And The Lamp By Aruze Recent additions to the slot floor at Casino Arizona include more of Aruze’s exciting Innovator Deluxe cabinets! The Innovator Deluxe is known for its Radiant Reels which are large reels dynamically illuminated by multi-colored LED lights that contain variable spin speeds designed to build anticipation for the winning combinations. The first of these exciting new themes is Aladdin and the Lamp, a 5-reel, 30-line, deluxe stepper slot game featuring an interactive magical lamp on the face of the game machine which is used to beckon the genie in bonus rounds. Actions that occur in the top box impact the spins of the Radiant Reels below and rubbing the lamp reveals the genie and a large variety of animations plus five different kinds of bonus features. The lamp “rub” releases multiple genies to the top screen and they fly down to the physical reels to transform them into wild reels. Aruze has done an amazing job with their video techniques on the mechanical reels utilizing lights, sounds and variable reel speeds. The genie seems to leap down to each reel, causing it to spin at high speeds until stopping on the full-reel image of the genie that is already on the reels. It’s a truly enjoyable and unique experience playing this fun new slot!

Alibaba By Aruze Alibaba is a 5-reel, 30-line, deluxe stepper slot game and is the second of the two new themes by Aruze that has just arrived onto the Casino Arizona slot floor. The game features a top box which allows for physical interactions during four different kinds of bonuses and other game events. Alibaba utilizes an exciting new technique called “RVL Technology” that adds a physical visual layer to the interactive top box where devices can slide in front of the LCD monitor in various game situations. RVL Technology can block the monitor from view, unveil a small percentage of the monitor, or even vibrate to provide the illusion of a shaking monitor. Players can watch Alibaba appear and disappear through the video screen doors and get surprised with treasures, thieves, or a bonus event. It’s a breath-taking technology with amazing visual effects! Talking Stick Resort has also just introduced new themes to the popular Aruze Innovator bank: King of Dragons III, Catch The Money, and Cherry Chance Shining Seven. In King of Dragons III, players can seek the dragon’s riches hiding within the magical orbs of the “Dragon” bonus. Catch the Money features the “Money Bag Chance” bonus which awards up to 15 free games and features various reel actions, including “Dancing Wheels” which rhythmically move with the game’s music. And, Cherry Chance Shining Seven has the “Cherry Chance” bonus which awards up to 8 free games with increased chances of ’7’ wins. $

Konami Gaming Expands Vegas Offices Signals more Konami games to hit casino floors soon!

Government Efficiency In Action - Will Benefit AZ Educational Fund The Arizona Department of Gaming (ADG) announced that it will have a fiscal end-of-the-year budget surplus in excess of $250,000. The agency cites improvements in operational efficiency as the main reason they are able to provide the enhanced services at reduced costs. The money saved will be given to the Arizona Educational Fund. “In today’s economic climate, state agencies are being asked to accomplish their missions with less resources,” said Mark Brnovich, Director of the Arizona Department of Gaming. The Department employed new cost-saving methods and sought innovative ways to become more proficient. Those methods proved successful over the last year when ADG oversaw the opening of two new Arizona tribal casinos. ADG employees implemented modern wireless and electronic technologies to certify gaming machines, conduct inspections, and improve efficiency in the field. Casino audit work steps were modified to be more efficacious. Enhancements to gaming employee and vendor applications were also made, establishing a streamlined process for those wishing to pursue careers or do business with gaming facilities. Director Brnovich was chairman of the Arizona Commission on Privatization and Efficiency. Now, in addition to offering cost-saving suggestions to state leaders, he is providing a real-world example of improved government efficiency. The ADG is often cited as a model state agency. “The Department continues to pursue efficient ways to protect the public, ensure compliance with the Arizona Tribal–State Gaming Compacts and regulate the gaming industry,” said Brnovich. “It is vital to keep pace in a rapidly developing field, while operating within the means of a prudent budget. In doing so, we are excited to be in a position where we can contribute much needed resources to the Arizona Educational Fund.”

Konami Gaming, a subsidiary of Japan’s Konami Corp., has just started expanding its U.S. headquarters in Las Vegas. The existing facility is nearly 123,000 square feet and the renovation includes the addition of another 193,000 square feet that is adjacent to the current building. The increase in size to a 316,000 square foot facility shows the company’s growth and future goals which includes maintaining their position as a leading slot manufacturer in the gaming industry. Alongside slot giants IGT, Bally, WMS, and Aristocrat, Konami has continued to grow a loyal following of fans with all their innovative products. Konami is clearly in a growth stage. With the facility expansion, plans on increasing staff and production capabilities are already in place. In January of this year, Konami announced a very lucrative licensing agreement with Hasbro Inc. to design and manufacture slot games using the Dungeons and Dragons brand. $

Glendale Resident Receives $500,000 Surprise

G

eorge McGurk Jr. of Glendale got a very pleasant surprise the morning of June 18, 2013, when he made his usual stop at his favorite store. He purchased one $500,000 Riches Scratcher and took it outside to scratch. After he was finished scratching the ticket and realizing he had won the amount of $500,000, he kept rechecking it. Finally, he called his fiancée to come meet him in the parking lot because he was afraid he might pass out from shock. Once he began to feel better, George went to work. He told a couple of co-workers about his good fortune and they wanted to know if the ticket was real. He decided to redeem the ticket

right away so he wouldn’t have to worry about carrying it around. George prefers the $10 and $20 games because he likes the odds. He also believes that “You have to play big to win big.” (He was referring to the cost of the ticket, not the number of tickets purchased.) After his stint in the Air Force, George moved to Arizona where he works as a journeyman lineman. He plays Powerball as part of an office pool. In his spare time, he is an active gamer. With regard to his winnings, George hasn’t made any plans except that he intends to pay off his bills and lavish his fiancée with some special gifts. He will bank a good portion of his winnings, but also intends to “enjoy life a little more.” The winning ticket was purchased at Circle K, 10625 N. 19th Ave., Phoenix. $

Hints & Tips

If I have to play at a casino with a BAD VIDEO KENO PAY TABLE...

How many spots do I play?

V

ideo keno is essentially a lottery game where players decide how many numbers (from 4 to 10) to mark on a field of eighty numbers (from 1 to 80) and what wager to place on each “spin” where twenty numbers are randomly drawn from the available eighty. Depending on how many of the selected numbers match the twenty drawn numbers determines how much is won based on the pay tables provided in the help screen. Arizona Gaming Guide staff members routinely find different pay tables at different locations on many casino floors for the same denomination. It really pays to check the help screen! However, players can be forced to pick from pay tables they know to be poor. This can happen when visiting a new casino with friends, vacationing at a casino out of town, or if the player’s favorite casino decides to make a change to the video keno games and that’s when players have to make the best out of a bad situation. Based on one example of a less than desirable (i.e. downright crummy) pay table our staff found at a casino recently (see the chart to the right), here’s some advice for video keno players in order to make the best of it!

One Example Of A Bad Video Keno Pay Table! 10 Spots

9 Spots

Odds 15.47

Hits Pays 10 10,000 9 4,500 8 1,000 7 132 6 23 5 5 Return Value Rating 89.79 13.89 80.63

Odds 6.53

Hits Pays 8 10,000 7 1,550 6 98 5 12 4 2 Return Value Rating 90.67 8.86 82.22

7 Spots

Hits Pays 6 1,500 5 68 4 4 3 3 Return Value Rating 90.76 5.62 82.37

5 Spots

3 Spots

Hits Pays 2 14 Return Value Rating 84.18 14.00 70.86

Odds—How many spins to win Return—Payback percentage Value—Average amount of a win Rating—Identifies best # of spots

 Ultimately, the math never lies with video keno. The analysis here indicates to play 7 spots. This selection has the highest “Rating” number and, therefore, in the long run is the best way to play this bad pay table.

 The “Odds” number (the average number of spins it takes to obtain a winning result) is the same regardless of the pay table. The best and the worst video keno will have the same “Odds” number based on the hits listed here. This means you’ll win something (on average) most often playing 4 spots followed by playing 7 spots. The worst “Odds” are for 10 spots. It takes over 15 games before you get a winner!

 When investigating video keno pay tables, always check the help screen and make sure to place the bet multiplier at “1” so comparisons are simple. If necessary, record the pay tables on a sheet of paper, by using a cell phone’s note app, or a quick cell phone photo (if the casino’s house rules permit photos).

 Don’t believe any video keno strategies that are not based on statistical analysis performed by a trained, experienced mathematician. Arizona Gaming Guide staff routinely finds inaccurate and totally false information on most internet sites claiming to offer video keno strategies and advice. Good luck, choose your numbers wisely, and play 7 spots! $ All of the analysis performed here is based on statistical calculations which consider an infinite number of random “spins” on a video keno game. Most players can approximate these numbers within 5-10% after only 100,000 spins. This number of spins is not difficult to achieve over a year or two of entertainment gaming with weekly play sessions lasting for only a few hours.

67th Annual Navajo Nation Fair By Lee Allen

September 2-8 Window Rock, AZ

Get set for a full week of non-stop Navajo with the 67th version of the annual Navajo Nation Fair, September 2-8 in Window Rock, Arizona. Upwards of 150,000 visitors are expected to show up in party mode for what is advertised as the largest American Indian fair in North America. “The largest gathering of Indian nations in the U.S. that cultivates and nurtures indigenous expression,” according to Multicultural Travel News. This tribal fair grand daddy, established in 1938 with livestock as its theme, has now blossomed into nearly a ‘something-for-everyone’ event. “The Fair has become a world-renowned event that showcases numerous aspects of Navajo life promoting the preservation of our heritage. This is a time to feature and honor our people and we’re happy to be a forum for their many talents, acknowledging hard work and accomplishments, and sharing our cultural pride and beauty with others,” said 2012 Fair Manager Norma Bowman. In addition to a myriad of scheduled attractions, the fair location in Window Rock is a draw in itself as one of the scenic wonders of Navajoland surrounded by four sacred mountains near Fort Defiance, Arizona and 25 miles outside of Gallup, New Mexico. This year’s fair coordinator is no stranger to heavy pressure and the dozens of demands she will face. Genevieve “Geneva” Tsouhlarkis managed the fair from 1989-1991 after making history in the rodeo world…twice. She became a National Indian World Barrel Racing Champion in the late 1980s at age 33, then rocked the rodeo arena by clinching the National Indian World Barrel Racing Championships at age 51.

TRIBAL NEWS ing us both a glimpse of the past and the key to the future. We’re grateful for ancestors who paved the way for our way of life today,” said the event coordinator. Elders Day with singing and dancing is scheduled for Thursday, September 5.

She’s still a force to be reckoned with now that her children are grown and she is able to return to her former fair responsibilities. A business/accounting graduate of the University of Albuquerque, the Standing Rock, New Mexico native says, “It’s like I never left and I am up to the challenge.” So now she’s back and ready to ride. “I want to make the Navajo Nation Fair THE place to be. I want other tribes to enter our pow wows, our rodeo, the performances, and our parade. And, I want visitors from around the world to see, hear, taste, and experience the lively spirit of the Navajo culture.”

The full slate of events planned for the 2103 event have not yet been announced to the public, but in years past they included a parade; an inter-tribal pow wow; lots of rodeo action [Junior Rodeo, Master Rodeo, Wild Horse Racing, Dummy Roping]; a half-marathon; a fund-raising golf tournament; singing and dancing; crowning of Miss Navajo Nation; a livestock exhibit and butchering contest; a carnival; a farmers market, and food pavilions galore. One of the event categories that generally results in standing-room-only viewing involves Indian cowboys and a variety of four-footed-friends that either help with the roping or are roped themselves. Expect to see the Dean C. Jackson Arena filled with spectators in boots and jeans urging on the hundreds of competing cowboys and cowgirls. “It’s been said that Indian rodeo is the most popular sport on the Navajo Nation and fans can look forward to a razor-sharp showdown of Native American competitors,” says Parks and Recreation Department publicist Roberta John. “It just doesn’t get any more rustic and original than Indian rodeo on Indian land where the theme is ‘living life in eight seconds’.” For shutterbugs in the crowd, there will be a chance to capture picture-perfect Navajo elders dressed in full regalia. “The traditional song and dance competition is a combination of unique

Because of the size of this annual undertaking, it takes months of planning and preparation to get it ready and a very large workforce and a lot of teamwork to pull it off. “We spend half a million dollars on services and contracts alone --- everything from entertainment and specialty acts to lighting, parking, and janitorial services,” says Nathaniel Boyd, Navajo Nation Parks and Recreation Contract Compliance Officer.” Interestingly enough, despite the draw for tourists from all over the planet, a Visitor Survey and Economic Impact Study reveals that a good percentage of fair visitors come from the nearly 300,000 enrolled nation members who travel from all corners of the 28,000-square-mile reservation to spend most of their fair pocketbook on the rodeo, the midway carnival, food, and beverages. Not only does the fair allow Navajo peoples to show the world who they are and what they are about, the annual event also allows hard-working Dine a chance to kick back and enjoy familiar pastimes like rodeo and pow wow. “We’re grateful that many tribal members attend the fair, but we also want to attract visitors from throughout the world because the Navajo Nation Fair is a family-fun event for people of all ages and nationalities,” said Parks and Recreation Department Manager Martin Begaye. Each year’s fair has a theme, like 2012’s “Appreciation Tradition” that honored Navajo elders as priceless treasures. The 90year-old Code Talker Chester Nez --- the only living Navajo remaining from the World War II Marine Corps platoon that developed their unbreakable secret code --- acted as the Grand Marshall. “Our elders are precious and full of wisdom, provid-

beauty and examples of traditional culture,” says John. “Tribal members from throughout the reservation follow the drum beat while wearing their finest minutely-detailed traditional attire.” There is a word of caution here --- because the population of the Navajo Nation just about doubles during the event, early arrival is not only recommended but almost mandatory. By 8am on parade morning, Highway 264 between Tse Bonito, NM, and St. Michaels, AZ, will be closed for hours as thousands of spectators line the 3-mile-long parade route. Ak-Chin Indian Community Invests in Valley Enterprises By Katie Snyder

I

n Indian Country, life is viewed as interconnected and every decision has physical, economic, social, and spiritual consequences, and all these impacts must be carefully considered. Tribes are investing on and off their Native lands in ventures such as hotels, golf courses, manufacturing, solar and wind technology, entertainment venues, tourism, health care, the hospitality industry, and gambling enterprises, all of which have begun to generate significant revenues for the interconnected community. Over the last three years the Ak-Chin Indian Community has made significant investments both on tribal lands and in the surrounding communities. “We have made great strides, not only in the Ak-Chin Indian Community but at a regional level as well, to diversify our development efforts and improve the quality of life for our tribal members through well-evaluated economic ventures and capital projects,” said Ak-Chin Tribal Chairman Louis J. Manuel Jr. “We are excited about our joint efforts and partnerships so far this year and we look forward to working together to find more ways to continue investing in the greater community.” Since 2012, the Community has made significant investments on the reservation, from a multi-million dollar partnership with Quail Run Building Materials, Inc. to create a manufacturing center, to a multi-purpose justice center that houses the police department, detention, probation, public defender’s office, prosecutor’s office, courts and programming space for rehabilitation services, to a multi-million dollar Water Reclamation Facility. “With the new Water Reclamation Facility, we are able to provide advanced water and wastewater system capacity for current and future development in the community,” said Tribal Chairman Manuel.

Pictured left to right Delia M. Carlyle Terry Enos Chairman Louis Manuel Jr. Vice Chairman William J. Antone Gabriel L. Lopez

And off the reservation there have already been three announcements this year which include: ● A Partnership agreement with the Arizona Rattlers for the 2013 season, which includes naming rights to the arena football team’s field, now Ak-Chin Field ● A $10 million investment in the City of Maricopa, in which funds will be allocated to Maricopa Unified School District and to the operation of the City’s Copper Sky Recreational Complex, a multigenerational/aquatic center and regional park ● And, most recently, a partnership with Live Nation Entertainment on a deal that gave a West Valley concert venue that holds 20,000 a new name—the Ak-Chin Pavilion. “The recent partnership with Live Nation Entertainment was just one of the more than 100 capital projects in the works both on the reservation and off the reservation,” said Jayne Long, the capital projects manager for the Ak-Chin Indian Community.

The addition of the Water Reclamation Facility came just before the Community’s planned commercial center, now known as the Ultrastar Multi-tainment Center at Ak-Chin Circle located directly north of Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino Resort. Completed in late 2012, the center features a 12-screen movie theater and a 24lane bowling alley, an arcade, laser tag and restaurants as well as an outdoor amphitheater.

Through fostered relationships on both a local level as well as with major business leaders throughout Arizona, the tribe looks to continue to make investments in various communities throughout the state, improve the quality of life and create a strong future for everyone. $

That doesn’t include what has been accomplished so far in 2013. In May, the tribe expanded their farming enterprise to include a full Potato Washing Plant on reservation where potatoes are washed, inspected, sorted, packed and then sent to local food distribution plants. This recent addition has allowed the Community to expand their partnerships with popular potato chip companies like Frito Lay and Poore Brothers chips.

About Ak-Chin Indian Community: The Ak-Chin Indian Community has an enrollment of more than 937 members and is nestled into the Santa Cruz Valley of Southern Arizona. The Community lies 58 miles south of Phoenix in the northwestern part of Pinal County. Ak-Chin is an O'odham word translated to mean "mouth of the wash" or "place where the wash loses itself in the sand or ground.”

Edgewater E Center presents LOS TUCANES DE TIJUANA

and INTOCABLE

Los Tucanes de Tijuana and Intocable, two Latin bands with extraordinary success on tour and in the recording industry, will perform in Edgewater’s E Center this fall. The Los Tucanes de Tijuana concert is Saturday, September 14. Intocable will perform Saturday, October 26. Both concerts start at 8pm. Tickets for both concerts start at $25. Led by Mario Quintero Lara, Los Tucanes de Tijuana has been the top band in Mexico for more than 24 years, performing corridos (ballads) in the LatinAmerican tradition. Lara has earned awards as the top composer of the most played songs in the US (in their genre). They are the only Regional Mexican Band to have 6 songs at one time on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums. The band has sold more than 13 million albums worldwide. Grammy Award winning Intocable is a Tejano/Norteño musical group from Zapata, Texas. The band rose to the top of the Tejano and Norteño fields with a musical signature that had fused Tejano's robust conjunto and Norteño folk rhythms with a pop balladry. Intocable could very well be the most influential group in Tejano, and their tough Tejano/Norteño fusion has become the blueprint for dozens of Tex-Mex groups. CASINO NIGHTLIFE

The Brand New TSR Lounge By Ramses Ja

W

hen it comes to nightlife, no one does it better than Talking Stick Resort. From the shows they put on inside their ballroom, to the concerts they bring to their showroom, they are unmatched. When it comes to their pool parties, they are simply the best…and, of course, not enough can be said about their rooftop nightclub Degree 270. The creative minds at Talking Stick Resort, however, felt that there was another level of entertainment that could be achieved. Just when you thought it couldn't get any better, they introduced the TSR Lounge! The TSR Lounge comes to life every Friday from 8pm until 2am and every Saturday from 5pm until 2am. This experience takes place in the beautiful atrium at Talking Stick Resort. A dance floor is constructed, a DJ booth is rolled out, and the lighting, sound and furniture feel like they come straight out of an Ibiza mega-club! There are also two bars to keep the drinks flowing and…best of all…there is no cover charge! I can't imagine it getting any better! This experience fits nicely in-between the Release pool parties (taking place every weekend all Summer long) and the opening of the primary night club Degree 270. Also, because the TSR Lounge goes until 2am, it serves as an overflow for when the Degree 270 hits capacity…not that it isn't a big enough attraction on its own! Some of the city's biggest names are regular DJs at the TSR Lounge including Q Ward, Robert Michael, Emmanuel, Hospe and on occasion…even me! Partying at the TSR Lounge in the atrium is a very special experience. The openness of the room feels very welcoming. There are balconies all around and the music constantly draws people to peer over them. Dancing almost feels like a performance where you're the star of the show! In addition, because the atrium is just behind the casino floor, it's a very convenient place to come celebrate big wins!

SAMI’S SMACKDOWN

Karma can be a harsh mistress By Sami Becker Sami, I’m sick of watching people stiff the cocktail servers! I can’t believe how cheap people can be! Last night I sat next to someone playing $4 per spin on video keno and she didn’t give the servers a single dime. It’s deeply upsetting to me. If I don’t have change to tip then I don’t order a drink. These people are rude, insensitive, and I say it again—cheap! I hope you print my letter and my plea: People, please take what you are willing to put down as one bet (at the tables, on a slot, whatever), just one bet, and give it to the cocktail servers. If you’re betting 40 cents a spin on the slots, give a 40 cent tip. That’s not asking for much! Thank you for always being so candid. When I read the magazine, I start from the back because I’m always interested to read your opinions. Helen Moreno—Gilbert, AZ I agree that it’s down right infuriating when casino visitors are so insensitive that they don’t realize cocktail servers, as well as the floor

attendants, bartenders, valet attendants, bell hops, dealers, restaurant servers, and other casino service employees, depend on tips to earn their living. To all the cheapskates out there I say, ‘if you pinch your penny too hard you might just break it in half (gasp) and then what?’ Just remember, Karma can be a harsh mistress! Helen, the world needs more people like you! Thank you for taking the time to write in and caring about other people’s feelings. You offer excellent words of advice—make just one less bet at the blackjack table or on the slot machine and give it to a well-deserving casino employee. Put a smile on someone else’s face and see how a small gesture can mean so much to another person! $
