PLAYERS TALK

Q&A On Everything Gaming

Q: My husband says playing the tables is better than playing the slots. I keep telling him the slots are a better bet because of the payback percentages you guys always talk about. Who is right? Jenny Blake — Phoenix, Arizona A: You are Jenny! How do we know? The gaming statistics published by the Nevada Gaming Commission indicate that the hold percentage for casinos on the slots top out at around 15%. Unfortunately, that’s where the hold percentage STARTS for most table games and can go as high as 35%. In most cases, the tightest slots like the penny slots and Megabucks (available in Nevada) are as tight as the loosest table game. Think about that for a minute. Arizona casinos don’t publish their gaming statistics the way Nevada does (because of state law), but casinos are run pretty much the same all over the country as far as their hold percentages go. So, unless you really know what you are doing, (i.e. you count cards, you can identify pay tables for all the table games quickly, you know perfect strategy and abide by it all the time, etc.) stay away from the tables and stick to the slots! Q: What happens to the extra tickets left lying around near the machines and across the casino? Thomas Rodriguez – Chandler, Arizona A: Te ch nically, casino s w ill claim th o se tick e ts as th e ir property. You should check with each casino for specific policies, but at this point it’s standard practice, especially here in Arizona. While that may not seem fair, how are they supposed to track down the original owners of all those tickets worth less than a dollar? They can’t have teams of people crosschecking security footage and player card data searching for the rightful owner! Plus, most casinos have a policy that they assume no responsibility for unattended credits (which would certainly extend to cashout tickets you mention). So, next time you find a $300.00 ticket lying around in the casino, it’s best to turn it in to an employee rather than “steal” it from the casino. Seriously! Q: Why do I see other people cashing out and then putting the ticket back into the machine moments later? Are they doing something to the slot machine? Lilly F. – Flagstaff, Arizona

A: No . Cash ing o ut h as no influe nce o n any slo t m achine anywhere. Gaming regulations on slot machines and other electronic gaming devices (such as electronic blackjack, etc.) prevent external events from affecting future spins. Some people may believe they are changing their luck with this behavior. And, if you are one such person, then there is nothing wrong with that belief. However, there is no effect at all. Q: I play here in Laughlin [Nevada] and don’t spend much time in Arizona’s Casinos. But I have visited Blue Water before. I’d like to know why there are so many casinos in Laughlin and why there aren’t any in Kingman or Flagstaff or more in Blue Water [Parker, Arizona]. Martha Pearson – Bullhead City, Arizona A: Marth a, in Ne vad a casino gam ing w as le galize d in 1931 when their state legislature passed a bill allowing for gaming within the state. As a result, having casinos or forms of casino gaming as a legal business is relatively easy to establish (as long as you have a lot of money and a very clean personal and professional record). In Arizona, with the passage of Proposition 202 over 10 years ago, casino gaming on tribal lands was formalized. Gaming in any form is not legal in Arizona unless it is conducted on tribal land or under very specific circumstances for charitable purposes. So, casinos in Arizona are restricted to Indian reservations. Furthermore, tribes are restricted to a certain number of casinos based on their size. That’s why one tribe may have multiple casinos, but another won’t. In addition, the tribe must consider if building a second casino generates additional income based on their location. Also, don’t forget that the Navajo Nation opened their first casino in Arizona this May just East of Flagstaff. Q: Why are some slots louder than others? Paul Cantor – Tucson, Arizona A: Unf o rtunate ly, th at d e p e nd s o n w h o m ad e th e slo t (the manufacturer), when it was made, and what the casino set the volume at when they first got the slot onto their floor. User operated volume controls are still relatively new on slots and not all games have them (even some brand new ones). But, if your favorite slot is too loud or too soft and there is no volume control, ask a slot attendant to change it. $

Table Games—Blackjack

By Al Moe

I

f you keep track of your results at the blackjack tables you will find there is a direct correlation between how much you bet, how long you play, and how skilled you are at the game. That might seem obvious, but there are some other things that creep into the equation like how many other players there are at the table and how they play their hands. When the player on third base hits a hard hand against a dealer up card of six and then the dealer makes their hand when they would have busted, you feel cheated. And, if the dealer then gets a blackjack on the next hand, well, that’s a disaster. But only in the short term, because the next time a player does the same thing the results will probably be different. In the long term, how others play their hands will have zero effect on your bankroll. That’s because based on thousands of hands played, the cards will break-even and converge towards true probability numbers. The only thing that will remain is the subjective and selective memory of the players who think their results are based on the actions of other players, not their own play. The better you play, the more often you will win, it’s really that simple. You can prove this to yourself by dealing three hands of blackjack from a standard deck of 52 cards. Make the dealer’s hand a 10 down and 6 up. Make your hand any two cards, and make your co-player’s hand any two cards. Now draw a card as if your co-player took a hit instead of waiting for the dealer to

08 Arizona Gaming Guide | November 2013 | azgamingguide.com

bust. Sometimes it will be a card that helps the dealer and you lose. Sometimes it will be a card that busts the dealer and you win. See a pattern? No, there is no pattern. After 1000 hands the dealer will bust just as many times whether an extra card is used by the co-player or not. Honest! So why do so many players want to play alone? Selective memory and the desire to feel in control of their future. Nothing wrong with that. You should keep in mind that unless you are a card counter, playing alone will actually cost you more money than playing with a crowd! How’s that? Well, you will get a lot more hands playing alone (up to 240 per hour) compared to when you play with a crowd (as few as 60 hands per hour). With four times as many hands your entertainment dollars will get eaten up quicker. Remember, your cost is how long you play, how many hands you get, and how much you wager. So, don’t fret over how others play their hands. In the long run, only you have an effect on your blackjack results. $

Willy Wonka Slot Finally Arrives In Arizona’s Casinos!

B

lue Water Resort and Casino, located in Parker, Arizona along the scenic Colorado River, is the first casino in the state to offer WMS Gaming’s Willy Wonk a and The Chocolate Factory slot machine to an audience of slot fans who can’t wait to get their hands on this slot! The buzz behind this slot has been growing and growing among slot enthusiasts since its debut at the Global Gaming Expo (G2E) last year. Our team played this slot at G2E in 2012 and 2013 for free credits, in Las Vegas for money, and in Laughlin for money. Each time we played this slot, our excitement for its arrival in Arizona heightened. We knew this game would have great appeal with our readers and fans. The slot makes everyone feel like a kid again, the graphics are bright and vibrant, the sounds and music (all straight from the 1971 musical motion picture classic and features music from the Acad em y Aw ard -nominated original score) are perfectly executed enhancements to the gameplay, and the math behind the game provides for extended play sessions. Our consistent experience is to walk away even after one to two hours of play! The game offers numerous exciting bonus rounds, but the one that really stands out to us is the appearance of the popular Oompa Loompa characters that adds Wild symbols to the reels while expanding the reels into the top screen for the opportunity for additional wins. This slot is ready for some “Scrumdidilyumptious” fun! $ As of press time for this issue, Blue Water is the only casino with this slot. Since then, other Arizona casinos may have the game. Ask for the slot at your favorite casino (tell them we sent you!) and check our website at azgamingguide.com for updates.

WINNING WAYS

Hints & Tips

A clever way to increase your gambling budget By Lana Hartmann

V

isiting a casino and expecting to enjoy several hours worth of entertainment on a tight, limited budget is difficult, if not impossible, nowadays. Slot games have become more volatile with higher minimum bets, table game limits have been raised, and slot departments have decreased their payback percentages. The days of walking into a casino with $50-$100 and expecting to play for an extended period of time are over. Now, budgets need to be at least 2X—3X that amount (conservatively speaking) to have a fighting chance. Given that many of us don’t have unlimited spending money, we all need to carefully plan our casino budgets and get creative on ways we can increase our gambling bankroll. Here’s one idea that will put more money in your pocket for your next casino trip (or possible next several casino trips) without breaking the bank:

Etsy.com Want to sell your arts, crafts, and homemade items? Turn your passion into a business! It’s super easy to set up your own online shop on Etsy and post your products. Browse other Etsy shops for inspiration and marketing ideas!

Threadflip.com Threadflip is an excellent marketplace for selling clothes and accessories! You can choose to sell your items on your own or have them sell them for you. You ship the item (for free) and they professionally photograph, price, and list it. Then, they pay you 60% of the sale in cash.

Exchangemyphone.com Empty the attic! Chances are you’re sitting on (well, under) hundreds of dollars in unwanted household goods! It’s time to say goodbye to all those items just taking up space and collecting dust. These ten websites will help you get some extra cash for your castoffs:

Amazon.com Amazon may be known best for book shopping, but did you know that you can sell virtually anything you want as well? For a small commission and transaction fee, Amazon makes it easy for both the seller and the buyer. Plus, you don’t have to pay any fees until your item sells!

Cardaddy.com Can’t find a dealer willing to give you a good price on a tradein? This website lets you list your vehicle and up to 35 photos for free.

Sell.com Say goodbye to classifieds with this great web alternative! It’s free to join and only costs a few dollars per item to post an ad that runs for up to 30 days.

Facebook.com When you’re done playing Slotomania, check out the marketplace section of Facebook. Yes, Facebook actually has a place for people to list items to sell! And, there’s no need to signup if you’re already part of the social network!

16 Arizona Gaming Guide | November 2013 | azgamingguide.com

Don’t know what to do with your old cell phones? This website buys a variety of popular phones and they don’t even have to be in perfect condition. Get your quote, ship for free, and get paid!

Furnituretrader.com Consignment shops aren’t just for clothes! This virtual store helps your old dining room set or mismatched end table find a new home and more money in your wallet. Prices to list items vary with the value of each item and length of time listed and start at just a couple dollars.

EBay.com Do you have rare items such as coins, stamps, classic toys and vintage electronics? EBay is still the best website on the internet for branded and highly sought-after items.

Craigslist.com Craigslist continues to be one of the best websites to sell large items to local buyers. Expensive to ship items such as furniture, office equipment, tools, and exercise equipment are always a hit on Craigslist. You can even list job postings and services! Intimidated to go online and use one of these services? How about having a good old fashioned garage sale? Better yet, get a group of friends, family members or neighbors together and do a community garage sale! The time is right and the weather is perfect! Make room in your closets and some extra cash in your wallet. $

Tribal Casino Revenue Up 3rd Year In A Row

T

he National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC) just recently released data that shows tribal casino gaming revenue was the highest ever in 2012 totaling $27.9 billion, marking the third consecutive year of growth of gross gaming revenues (GGR) since the recession began in 2008. “In 2012, the Indian gaming industry saw its largest gross gaming revenues ever,” said Tracie Stevens, Chairwoman of the NIGC. “For those who judge casino spending as an indicator of increased discretionary spending and economic recovery, 2012 revenues certainly display economic encouragement.” The 2012 GGR of $27.9 billion represents 2.7 percent growth in revenue from the 2011 GGR of $27.2 billion. The overall growth of GGR in 2012 is attributable to 66 percent of the Indian gaming operations, which reported an increase in gaming revenues. Of the operations that reported an increase in revenue, approximately 44 percent showed moderate growth of less than 10 percent. “Regulation has played a key role in the growth of the Indian gaming industry,” said Associate Commissioner Dan Little. “Over the last three years, our regulatory review has provided much needed reform to meet the needs of the changing industry and provide flexibility and consistency for tribes and tribal regulators.” The table above shows the revenue trends over the past 10 years. Since 2010, the Indian gaming industry as a whole experi-

enced approximately 3 percent annual growth—reaching its largest GGR so far last year. In keeping with the trend, Arizona also experienced an approximately 3 percent annual growth with the largest growth during 2012 at 3.9 percent. The 2012 GGR is calculated based on independently audited financial statements received by the NIGC through June 20, 2013. Financial statements are submitted by Indian gaming operations in accordance with the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. Gaming revenues represent the net win from gaming activities, which is the difference between gaming receipts and payouts. The NIGC is committed to the prompt and efficient regulation of the Indian gaming industry, which spans more than 420 gaming establishments, associated with nearly 240 tribes across 28 states. The Commission’s dedication to compliance with the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act ensures the integrity of the $27 billion Indian gaming industry. To learn more about the NIGC, visit nigc.gov. $

New research reveals Americans spent $2.6 billion on illegal offshore gambling websites in 2012— generating nearly 10 percent of the $33 billion worldwide online gambling market—according to research conducted by the American Gaming Association (AGA). The new research, developed by H2 Gambling Capital, reinforces the critical need for policymakers to safeguard Americans from illegal online gambling operators like those depicted in the new film “Runner Runner.” "Runner Runner” is a fictional account of a lawless online poker world ruled by shady and unethical characters that sadly is not far from reality for millions of Americans who simply want to enjoy one of our favorite pastimes in a safe online environment," said Geoff Freeman, the president and CEO of the AGA. “Americans account for nearly 10 percent of the global online gaming marketplace at a time when the business is illegal in all but three American states. It is past time for policymakers to put necessary safeguards in place.” “Runner Runner” is currently being shown in movie theaters all across Arizona. Send us an e-mail to editor@azgamingguide.com and tell us what you think of the film! azgamingguide.com | November 2013 | Arizona Gaming Guide

At least one member of the pool has already spoken to an attorney, and the others are not far behind. None of the three winners have any immediate plans for their winnings. The winning ticket was purchased at a retailer located at 10989 East Dynamite Boulevard in Scottsdale, Arizona.

They’d purchased some tickets for the Pow erball, put them away, and forgot about them. When one of the pool members remembered to check them, she redeemed them for $4 and called to tell them, “I re-invested our winnings.” She didn’t tell them she purchased four Quick Picks on The Pick instead of Powerball.

Terry Bear of Flagstaff went to his favorite store to redeem three tickets. He then purchased three Neon 5’s Scratchers, one of which turned out to be worth $50,000. He couldn’t believe it. After all, he’d just won $1,000 on a Scratchers ticket two days ago. Terry is the first Neon 5’s $50,000 top prize winner. Terry works several jobs in the retail industry to make ends meet, and the timing of this win is perfect. Although, he watches what he spends, he plays Scratchers two or three times a week. He plans to pay off some bills, move to a new apartment, and save the rest. $

A friend spotted a Lottery press release stating the location of the store that sold the winning jackpot ticket and, noting that it was near her friend, called to tell her to check her tickets. The pool member went and checked, found the matching ticket, and immediately had her husband recheck it. Then she called one of the other pool members, and her husband called the third. That’s when they discovered that she’d purchased The Pick . At first, the other two thought it was a joke, but they soon discovered it was no joke, but the real thing.

rom giveaways to thousands of dollars in free slot play, Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino is making sure no one goes home emptyhanded. While giveaways and other “comps” have been a staple of casinos in the past, this popular Southeast Valley casino is offering new Mega Money Sweepstakes amounting to thousands of dollars in prizes for their valued guests.

“One of the great things about coming to Harrah’s Ak-Chin is that it is like you are given the keys to Las Vegas,” said Mike Kintner, director of marketing at Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino. “Through our Total Rewards program, our guests can unlock benefits and other rewards that can be used throughout the entire Caesars’ family of casinos, worldwide. Unlike other casinos in Arizona, guests can take the rewards they earn with us to locations all over the world.” For those who have not signed up to become a Total Rewards member yet, it’s not too late. It is free to sign up and for the remainder of 2013 new members receive $15 in free slot play and a free buffet. A quick drive down highway 347 reveals just how great the November promotions will be! Mega Money For a chance to win up to $250,000, visit Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino on November 11, 18 and 25. Starting at 10am, all Total Rewards members will receive one game piece containing six numbers (1 through 50). Then every hour, on the hour, between noon and 6pm, six winning numbers will be announced. Players will scratch off the numbers on their game piece to see how much they win. The prize depends on how many numbers match, with the chance at the $250,000 jackpot. 26 Arizona Gaming Guide | November 2013 | azgamingguide.com

If players match: 1 number, they get $15 in Free Slot Play 2 numbers, they get $50 in Free Slot Play 3 numbers, they get $250 in Free Slot Play 4 numbers, they get $1,000 in Free Slot Play 5 numbers, they get $10,000 in Free Slot Play 6 numbers, they get $250,000 in cash! After each round of numbers are called, winners can then decide if they want to redeem the game piece for the prize above. Or they can “take their chance” for the Mega Money later in the day. They can hold onto their game card and wait for new numbers to be announced, but… they cannot redeem previous hours’ numbers because there is only one redemption per guest each day. “But everyone is a winner, because all guests that visit will get $5 in free slot play each promotional day,” said Kintner.

TRIBAL NEWS

rom the Museum of Northern Arizona’s focus on Navajo and Hopi to the famed Heard Museum in Phoenix with its permanent collections and changing exhibits to the oldest and largest anthropology museum in the state (Arizona State Museum in Tucson), if you’re looking to learn about Native Americans in Arizona, opportunities abound. Latest to join the educational efforts via museums and cultural centers is the tiny (400-square-feet) Pascua Yaqui tribal site recently opened in Tucson’s Old Pascua Village. “This is a place to transfer knowledge and culture to all interested parties,” says Director Guillermo Quiroga. “The Museum honors elders who worked and sacrificed to be able to see it become a reality where we can share our histories and memories with those who love our culture.”

By grand opening standards, Chea Vatnatek a (From the Beginning) was a modest effort in the former residence the tribe has owned since 1988. “The building, built in the mid-1920s and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, wasn’t deteriorating—it was on life-support,” architect Corky Poster told attendees. Newly-refurbished, the urban museum boasts 4,000 pictures and artifacts, and is already going digital. “We’re a traditional people, but we accept technology,” says Quiroga, “and by doing a digital collection, we can share these images.” Other Southern Arizona learning sites include the beautiful 38,000-square-foot Tohono O’odham Nation Cultural Center and Museum in Topawa, a $15 million facility that offers an intimate glimpse into tribal life through an extensive collection of basketry and pottery. The Amerind Foundation Museum in Dragoon features a 1,600-square-foot gallery exhibition showing how Native cultures depicted figures of humans, animals, and even plants. In the heart of Tucson on the University of Arizona campus lies the big grandpa of anthropology exhibits in the state, Arizona State Museum, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution. For over 120 years, ASM has focused on the indigenous cultures of Arizona, the American Southwest, and Northern Mexico, caring for millions of artifacts in perpetuity including the world’s largest collection of Southwest Indian pottery and American Indian basketry. Recently named as director, Dr. Patrick Lyons says, “ASM’s future is as vibrant as its past is storied.” The shining star in the Phoenix Valley is Heard Museum where, since 1929, visitors from around the world have been enchanted with American Indian art, culture, and history with an emphasis on tribes of the Southwest. Heard houses more than 40,000 pieces of art and cultural artifacts in a permanent collection and in a dozen long-term and changing exhibit galleries. In addition to its flagship location, Heard also operates a community museum in North Scottsdale. Other near-Valley Native cultural opportunities can be found at the Gila River Indian Community’s HuHuGam Heritage Center in Chandler, opened in 2004 “for the preservation and display of important cultural artifacts and art.” Nearby is the Ak-Chin Him-Dak Museum in Maricopa, a bit different from most others in that the traditional museum building is replaced by land and territory displaying tribal crafts, exhibits, and photographs.

The Pascua Yaqui community celebrates with the opening of its tiny museum in Tucson's Old Pascua Village—"a place to transfer knowledge and culture," says Director Guillermo Quiroga. Pictured top left and bottom: The blessing and the music during the opening ceremony. Pictured top right: One of the museum displays of Yaqui pascola masks.

Ak-Chin Indian Community’s Vekol Market Offers Farm-To-Table Experience

By Katie Snyder

A

fter two years managing a Gilbert coffee shop, Norm Potter is enjoying a new venture as the general manager at the Vekol Market and Café. After being rebuilt from the ground up in April 2012, the new 6,000-square-foot Vekol Market replaced the 34-year-old commissary on the Ak-Chin Indian Community. “While the development of the new market was quite the undertaking it allows us to be an alternative shopping and dining venue for customers and feature local ingredients from right here on the Ak-Chin Farms,” said Ak-Chin Tribal Chairman Louis J. Manuel Jr. “Roughly half of the market’s customers come from surrounding areas such as Casa Grande and Maricopa and the other half are Community members.” The Vekol Market’s café is a hit amongst the locals too. In fact, just last year the café was nominated for “best pizza,” “best sit down restaurant” and “best Mexican food” by InMaricopa Magazine. This farm-to-table concept is a Maricopa first, with dishes prepared with produce from local growers. “Sustainable food and intriguing atmosphere make this market and café stand out from the rest,” said Potter, general manager at the Vekol Market. “Our diverse menu and homemade options have quickly garnered local attention.” The café offers breakfast, lunch and dinner. Inside the market, executive chef Mark Alcala prepares fresh salads and homemade options that change based on what fresh ingredients are available. As for the baking—Potter creates all the dessert and baked good recipes from scratch. Vekol Market has quickly become known for their homemade muffins because the flavor combinations are so unique.

32 Arizona Gaming Guide | November 2013 | azgamingguide.com

“We really wanted to focus on fresh menu items with ingredients sourced locally,” said Potter. “We try and use as many fresh items from our own farming enterprises, such as Hickman’s eggs, and also partner to get as many items as possible from nearby farms as well.” With made-to-order meals as well as grab-and-go boxed meals, Vekol Market has been able to provide quick and healthy options for people on the go. Some of the fall items market-goers can expect: homemade green chili, fresh baked muffins, traditional bean soup, and homemade potato chips. But the fresh food isn’t the only thing customers love about the café. The dining area includes television, Wi-Fi access and a patio with outside seating! So, what’s next for the Vekol Market? “We have recently taken our healthy eats on the road and started a catering service,” said Potter. “We are eager to showcase some of the recipes from the Vekol Market café and the local produce from around the area.” “In addition to our local produce inside the market, we will invite Community members to sell traditional Native American items and art as well,” said Potter. “Our hope is that through our food we are not just able to embrace sustainable cooking but that we are able to create places for Community members and residents to gather for years to come.” The Vekol Market is located at 47021 West Farrell Road in Maricopa, Arizona. Frank Sinatra, Jr. planned a career as a pianist and music conductor but destiny led to his debut in show business as a singer. In 1963, the 21-year-old made his debut as a singer in Manhattan. Following his debut he performed in major clubs and showrooms throughout the US, Canada, Japan, Brazil and England. In 1988, he joined his father's staff as musical director and conductor. In 1993, both father and son were booked at the Desert Inn in Las Vegas--Frank Sr. in the showroom and Frank Jr. in the Lounge. "It was a lot of work conducting for my father and then singing two of my own shows, but I can't remember when I've had so much fun," Frank Jr. said. Following his father's death, Frank Jr. created a special performance featuring his father's voice. The tremendous success of the event led to performing his father's music on tour. CASINO NIGHTLIFE

Theresa Franco At The TSR Lounge By Ramses Ja

I

f you've partied anywhere in Old-Town Scottsdale in the past decade, chances are that you'll recognize one of Talking Stick's newest faces. Theresa Franco is the beauty behind the beats at Talking Stick Resort's TSR Lounge every Saturday night. I caught up to her to ask her a few questions about her style of DJing, her idea of a perfect party, and her plans to take over the game! Ramses Ja (RJ): Tell me a little bit about your background. Theresa Franco (TF): Well, I've always been a big fan of music. I started out waitressing about 12 years ago, and up until a couple years ago, I spent 4-5 nights a week in nightclubs across Scottsdale. In that time, I really gained an understanding of a solid DJ set and what it took to make a crowd move. When I caught the bug to get behind the turntables, I already had an idea of what a set should sound like. I spent a lot of time at The Mint, and that helped a lot too! RJ: What is your favorite type of crowd to play to? TF: I love all types of music! Hip-Hop, EDM, Pop…everything! So, I guess I prefer playing open format sets. I let the crowd inspire my sets…that way I always give them what they want. Usually when people come out on a Saturday night, it's to celebrate a birthday, or a bachelor or bachelorette party…or something like that. I want to make sure that I have something for everyone no matter what their preference is. I like to play for the people who come out to have fun. If we are in sync, it makes for the perfect party! RJ: Do you find yourself typecast since you are a woman? TF: Sometimes, but I think it gives me an opportunity to prove myself. It's the narrow-minded people that don't expect much, so when I actually rock the crowd, I know that they'll take notice and remember my name. Adversities are only what

40 Arizona Gaming Guide | November 2013 | azgamingguide.com

you allow them to be. I take my craft seriously and am constantly honing my skills and evolving as a DJ and an entertainer. RJ: So what's next for Theresa Franco? TF: I'm really enjoying my residency at Talking Stick right now. I usually do gigs here and there, but to have a residency and to be able to learn a crowd over time is awesome. I'm working on locking in another residency as well…I like how it suits me! Other than that, I'm looking into some opportunities radio and out of state gigs as well. The future looks very bright for me right now, so I'm in a happy place! Life is beautiful! RJ: That's awesome! Keep going…I know everyone will be rooting for you! $

Talking Stick Resort’s TSR Lounge is located just downstairs from the main casino floor in the Atrium. The TSR Lounge features a live DJ, drink specials, and a plush ambiance to enjoy your weekends out. Enjoy the party at the TSR Lounge every weekend on Fridays from 8pm to 2am and Saturdays from 5pm to 2am! For more information, visit talkingstickresort.com or call 480.850.7777.

SAMI’S SMACKDOWN

WHY does my friend get MORE? By Sami Becker OK, I’d like to know how my friends always have better offers from the casinos. Their free play is like $75 when mine is only $20. And they get better food offers than me! One month, Sally got four different free play offers and I only got one. What is up with that? I go to the casino more often and I know my bankroll is the same or larger than my friends. Julie T. from Sun City, AZ Oooh...that can really piss someone off. Julie, I know exactly how you feel. In my opinion and years of experience, every casino operates their player’s club offers in different ways. To further complicate matters, offers vary by what level player you are. In general, the more often you play, and the larger the bankroll, the better offers you receive. However, casinos can (and do) examine on an individual level who gets what offer. Furthermore, casinos may be interested in enticing certain players with offers in order to have them visit more often. For example, if I visit a casino monthly with a bankroll of say $500, I may get a $50 free

48 Arizona Gaming Guide | November 2013 | azgamingguide.com

play offer every month and a $100 food voucher in the mail. My friend who visits once every three months with a bankroll of $300 may get offers of $50 free play twice a month and a $100 food voucher as well. That hardly seems fair, but if we take the casino’s perspective on the situation, they may be looking to convert your friend into a monthly player rather than having them remain a quarterly player. I have two suggestions for you. First, speak up about your situation by contacting a player’s club representative (preferably a supervisor or manager). Make sure you explain all the details of your situation. If you don’t like what you hear, you might be in the market for a new casino. Second, change your visit frequency or lower your bankroll, or both and see if there is a change after a month or two. You may be surprised by what happens with the offers you receive in the mail! $
