PLAYERS TALK

Each month we print responses to a select few of the many, many questions we receive via email and in our mailbox. However, there are always recurring questions we receive on a daily basis from readers and fans which tend to overlap in their topic. In order to best serve these questions, we thought we’d put together a list of common casino myths and explain why they are false in order to respond to as many readers as we possibly can in this issue. Thank you so much for your support, kind words, and of course, your questions! Please keep them coming as we love hearing from and interacting with all of you! Alexandra Lang—Editor

cannot set up when or how the progressive jackpot will be awarded by a slot machine.

Myth: I can influence the outcome of a slot machine by stopping the reels.

Reality: Cashing out of a slot machine instructs the slot machine’s software program to print a ticket with the corresponding currency amount from the credit meter, time, date, control numbers, a barcode, casino information, disclaimers, and much more, and that’s pretty much all it does. The next spin of the slot machine is determined by the randomly selected numbers at the time the next wager is placed and not by anything else. We have a highly regulated industry to thank for that, all backed up by independent third party testing of every slot machine game. A slot machine does not “know” what came before and what will happen next. A slot machine software program simply executes commands based on a structured set of rules. Based on casino gaming industry regulations, the next spin on a slot machine is independent from the previous spin. Cashing out does not reset or otherwise influence future spins on a slot machine.

Reality: Once the “spin” button is pressed, the computer program in the slot selects multiple random numbers in order to determine which reel positions to display on screen as the resulting outcome. Pressing the “stop” or “stop reels” button forces the computer program to skip any and all sounds, lights, animations, graphics, etc. and just display the randomly selected reel positions on screen. If you are playing a reel slot, the computer program physically stops the reels as quickly as it can in order to display the randomly selected reel positions. You cannot “catch” a bonus symbol or a wild symbol on its way down the screen. If the randomly selected reel position contained a wild or bonus symbol then that is what it will display. If not, it won’t. A player cannot influence the outcome of a spin.

As a matter of fact, the casino wants a progressive jackpot to hit because they (the casino) are not on the hook for the amount! The slot machine manufacturer is the party who pays the lucky winner, not the casino. The casino (and the slot manufacturer) cannot control when a progressive jackpot hits. Myth: Cashing out and reinserting a ticket into a slot machine causes the machine to reset increasing the likelihood of a big win or bonus.

Myth: All those big progressive jackpot wins are set up by the casino to hit (or to not hit).

Myth: Just as I left a machine another person sat down and hit the jackpot (or bonus, or big win, etc.) and that could have/ should have/would have been mine!

Reality: The outcome of a spin on a slot machine is determined by the random numbers selected when a player makes a wager on the game and presses the “spin” button. If the random numbers selected by the slot machine’s random number generator (RNG) happen to correspond to a progressive jackpot’s winning combination, like lining up all of the jackpot symbols on the 20th pay line while playing max bet, then the slot machine will award the progressive jackpot. Casino gaming regulations governing the operation of slot machines ensure no external influences can interfere with the software. As a result, the casino

Reality: In order for that to be true, you would have had to have made the same wager and pressed the “spin” button at the exact same microsecond as that other individual. Is that something any of us would be capable of? Probably not. Casino gaming regulations state that a random number generator (RNG) must constantly be computing new random numbers, even when a game is inactive. The slot machine asks the RNG for numbers when the spin button is pressed. So two different people would have to press the spin button at the exact same time in order for both to hit the same jackpot. Since a slot’s RNG gen-

erates hundreds of thousands, even millions of random numbers per second, this feat is essentially impossible to reproduce between players at the same slot.

they’ll mathematically have at least a five times better chance of being awarded the progressive bonus because they are betting five times as much as the minimum bettor.

Myth: There is no advantage to betting max (or to betting more) on a slot.

And that’s just the math behind the bet (trust us, our team designed these games for a living)! What that doesn’t account for is that the game designers may have increased the chances beyond the bet factor. So, the max bettor might have a 25 times better chance than the minimum bettor of entering the progressive game! What most readers then ask is, “How do I know when my bet affects my chances of winning a progressive?”

Reality: Nothing could be further from the truth for most games on almost all casino floors. This is one myth that can actually cost you the difference between winning $1,000 and over $1,000,000! During casino visits over the years, members of the Arizona Gaming Guide staff have witnessed fellow slot players lining up winning combinations for progressive jackpots while playing at less than max bet and missing out on the life-changing prizes. What’s worse is when members of our team observe people playing minimum bet (say 30 credits on a penny game - 30 cents) on a slot connected to an in-house progressive with five levels where the higher you bet the more chances you have to be awarded the bonus game which pays the jackpots. We’ll even hear players complain, “Why don’t I ever get the bonus game for the jackpots?” Well simply put, if one player on that group of games is playing max bet (say 150 credits or $1.50)

A player’s only option is to make one simple step a habit before each play session on a brand new game: Read the help screen. Look for the “Help,” “Game Rules,” “Pay Table,” or similar button on the button panel or onscreen. Casino gaming regulations for slot machines require every slot not only post each win and how to achieve it, but other important game rules and best playing strategies as part of the game. Then you’ll know if you should bet more or not and what the effects are of your bet. On some, but not all, games betting more than the minimum may increase your chances of winning! Make sure you know all the game rules and place wagers you feel comfortable making when playing. $

TABLE GAMES By Al Moe

ARE YOU LUCKY LUCKY? Blackjack Side Bets Heat Up The Action At Your Favorite Table Game

A

re you Lucky? Some people seem to be, but only for a while! Then the next thing you know they are trying to pour their beer into the shuffle machine, which dealers as a whole seem to frown upon. Go figure. As for me, I always feel lucky when I play table games. If I don’t feel good, I don’t play, and I rarely play side-bets or bonus wagers because the house edge is often quite high. Recently, things have begun to change in that area, as with the new Lucky Lucky wager you can play at Casino Del Sol in Tucson. The game is distributed by Aces Up Gaming who says, “Lucky Lucky was named the most played side bet Blackjack game in Las Vegas in 2012.” Now I don’t know exactly what that sentence means, but the game is pretty simple and the house odds are as low at 2.62% depending on the pay scale used, according to the game description supplied on the company’s website. How to Play Lucky Lucky Lucky Lucky is played on a standard blackjack game with all of the casino’s rules in place. The only difference is that you have the option of wagering from $1 to $25 on the bonus spot each hand. When you play Lucky Lucky you’ll be rooting for a twocard hand of 19, 20 or 21. Why? Because that’s what you get paid for, silly. In addition to the 19, 20 and 21, there are a few other hands to look for! A suited 21 pays 15 to 1 instead of the regular 3 to 1, which is pretty cool. You can expect to see that about once in 84 hands. You’ll also find that a two-card hand like 7-7, 6-7, 7-8 and 6-8 become much more interesting, since 7-7-7 and 6-7-8 are winning bonus hands too! That means you might want to play your hand a bit differently to take advantage of the big payoffs. When you have a 13, 14 or 15 against a dealer up-card of 2 through 6, you usually stand pat. However, if you have a chance to make a high-paying Lucky Lucky hand, you might want to take a hit. In fact, it’s almost always worth going for the bonus, but you’ll have to make that decision on your own when the time comes.

Also, what happens when the dealer makes blackjack and you hold a hand like suited 7-7? Ask first! $

WINNING WAYS By Rodric J. Hurdle-Bradford

2015 NFL SEASON PREVIEW Kicking Off An Exciting Season

A

s another season of National Football League begins this month, and with the way last season ended with New England’s exciting last-second victory, this may be the most highly anticipated season ever. Here’s how the Arizo na Gam ing Guid e thinks the season will go down. Look for an old-school NFL matchup in the Super Bowl. In the end, a certain team from the Midwest may be asking the league, “Hoosier Daddy?” AFC East The New England Patriots have shored up their defense and are poised to repeat as Super Bowl champions. The addition of Ndamukong Suh, Kenny Stills and Greg Jennings make the Miami Dolphins the dark horse to take the division. The New York Jets have a new coach in former Arizona Cardinals assistant Todd Bowles, while the Buffalo Bills took the Jets former coach Rex Ryan and added superstar running back LaSean McCoy.

Tennessee Titans and Jacksonville Jaguars are headed for another irrelevant season.

AFC Central Expect a three-way tie at the top in the most competitive division in football between the Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals and Pittsburgh Steelers, all of whom had roughly the same B-grade draft and free-agent signings. The Cleveland Browns will continue to be the laughing stock of the league.

NFC East The Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles will battle for this division down to the last week. The manic New York Giants did not do much in free agency, and this may be longtime coach Tom Coughlin’s last stand. The Washington Redskins still have no direction and are destined for last place.

AFC West Peyton Manning is back to deliver one last division title with the Denver Broncos. The Kansas City Chiefs seem destined for an average season, while the San Diego Chargers are too distracted by their possible relocation to do anything significant on the field. The talented, but young, Oakland Raiders are about two seasons away from being real contenders.

NFC North The Green Bay Packers are poised to win the division and the conference. Expect a fall off for the Detroit Lions without Suh and an average season for the Chicago Bears. Adrian Peterson rejoining the Minnesota Vikings will not keep them out of last place.

AFC South By adding veteran wide receiver Andre Johnson and running back Frank Gore, the Indianapolis Colts are among the favorites to win the Super Bowl. The Houston Texans added Vince Wilfork to help JJ Watt and will challenge for the division title. The

22

Arizona Gaming Guide | August 2015 | azgamingguide.com

NFC South The worst division in the league will stay the same. Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers will win by default, but the New Orleans Saints and the average Atlanta Falcons will be within two games of the division lead. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be in last pace.

NFC West The Seattle Seahawks will repeat as division winners and may get back to the Super Bowl. The hometown Arizona Cardinals will finally finish second in the division, good enough for a playoff spot. The St. Louis Rams have injury-prone Nick Foles to lead them to an average year, while the mass exodus of the San Francisco 49ers has them destined for last place. AFC Playoffs Expect to see Manning and the Broncos pay a visit to the Colts which could be Manning’s last game ever. At some point expect a physical 13-9 game between either the Ravens, Bengals or Steelers. However, when those teams have to go to either Denver or Indianapolis with the Super Bowl on the line, they will come up short AFC Champion: Indianapolis Colts NFC Playoffs The Cardinals will probably host a home playoff game, or go on the road to play a weak NFC South division winner. If the Seattle Seahawks somehow secure home field advantage throughout the playoffs for a third straight season, expect a third straight Super Bowl appearance. However, the Green Bay Packers have a chip on their shoulder after last year’s heartbreaking playoff loss to the Seahawks, and with a weakened NFC North division they have an easier track for home-field advantage. NFC Champion: Green Bay Packers Super Bowl: Green Bay Packers versus Indianapolis Colts The Aaron Rodgers (University of California, Berkley) versus Andrew Luck (Stanford University) Super Bowl matchup in San Francisco would be the most unique storyline we have ever seen in sports. Along with being a dream quarterback matchup, the game would come down to the last minute and whoever has the ball last. The Colts overall horsepower on offense gives them a slight advantage over Rogers and The Pack. Expect a classic game. ompeting in TournEvent of Champions casino qualifiers across the country, the nation’s best slot tournament players are vying for a chance at the National Championship and $1 million. In the month of June, 31 additional qualifiers punched their tickets to the finals in Las Vegas. And, by the time you read this, another 30 qualifiers will have been added to the list just in July. August’s lineup of casino qualifiers will allow almost another 30 lucky winners to punch their tickets to attend the National Championship at the Wynn’s XS Nightclub in Las Vegas, Nevada on September 29-30, 2015. Qualifying rounds will continue into September with more than 175 slot players expected to compete for the National Championship and a grand prize of $1 million.

Arizona Gaming Guide | August 2015 | azgamingguide.com

The in-casino qualifying competitions are approaching the halfway point and the competition is fierce said GCA CEO Ram Chary. “Many of our partner casinos, who have been with us from the beginning, are reporting record crowds. Driving traffic and excitement to the casino floor is what TournEvent® is all about, and we’re seeing that the secret is out and slot players from across the country are focused on the opportunity to compete for the Championship.” The TournEvent of Champions takes slot tournaments to a whole new level. Two TournEvent of Champions buses are crisscrossing the country through August, visiting 22 states with more than 250,000 players competing for the chance to represent their favorite casino in Las Vegas. Casinos are hosting slot leagues, semi-finals and then in-casino finals to find their top players to represent them at the National Championship. TournEvent of Champions began in 2012 with regional competitions in California and Washington. The event crowned its first national champion in 2013 after 88 players from 77 casinos competed in the finals at Lagasse’s Stadium at The Palazzo in Las Vegas. The 2014 event expanded to 123 players from 98 casinos and a total purse of $500,000. In 2015, TournEvent of Champions is expecting more than 175 players from 100 casinos to compete for the $1 million top prize. How To Participate: Step 1 (Semi-Finals): Get your hands on a Golden Pass by competing in your home casino’s semi-final tournament. Ask for more information at the player’s club at your favorite casino. Here in Arizona, there are three casinos participating. They are Desert Diamond Casinos, Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino, and Casino Del Sol. Step 2 (In-Casino Finals): Return with your Golden Pass and prove you have what it takes to claim the top spot by competing against other Go ld en Pass earners at your home casino’s final tournament. One winner from each casino will advance to the National Slot TournEvent in Las Vegas (all expenses paid). Step 3 (National Championship): Pack your bags and your best good luck charm as you and your guest head to Las Vegas to compete in the Championship for your share of $1.3 million! TRIBAL NEWS Words By Lee Allen Photo By Navajo Nation Fair

AMERICA’S LARGEST INDIAN FAIR 69th Annual Navajo Nation Fair, September 6-13, 2015

W

elcome to Dinetah (Navajoland).

If bigger is better, then the annual Navajo Nation Fair is the best. And this year’s event, the 69th time that Navajo Parks and Recreation has presented “the largest gathering of Indian nations in the U.S. that cultivates and nurtures indigenous expression,” promises to put a new face on an already world-renowned event. Top Events USA notes that what really defines the fair and makes it an international attraction isn’t just the cowboys and cowgirls, it’s the Navajo people. “The Navajo Nation Fair on the largest reservation in the U.S. offers a time for people from all over the reservation to unite with friends and family. It’s a nice blend of both modern and traditional practices that attempts to shorten the gap between Navajo youth and their elders.” Kicking off on Monday morning, September 1st with a baby contest and going full throttle through a wild horse race, a rodeo (with as many as 900 riders from several Indian rodeo associations), a fry bread contest, and a wrap-up pow wow with room for as many as 500 dancers on the afternoon of Sunday, September 7th --- this is truly a something-for-everyone event. “It’s a time to feature and honor our people, acknowledging talent, hard work, accomplishments, and shared cultural pride,” said previous Fair Manager Norma Bowman. “It showcases numerous aspects of Navajo life that promote and preserve our heritage.” Begun in 1938 and centered around livestock as its theme, it has become the grandpa of all tribal fairs. Another former manager, Genevieve Tsouhlarkis, said, “The Fair is THE place to be for visitors around the world to see, hear, taste, and experience the spirit of the Navajo culture.”

“The real draw is the beautifully-dressed Navajo elders in traditional attire and vintage jewelry, dancing a traditional two-step to the beat of Native drums --- a glimpse of Navajo culture found at the fairgrounds along State Highway 264.” And as an ultimate compliment, indigenous guides who lead tours at NDN2rs call the fair “the most pure microcosm of Navajo culture to be experienced.” Like other events of this nature, cotton candy and Ferris wheel rides play a part, but this is an Indian rodeo in Indian Country. Skip the hot dogs and curly fries for once and try some hot fry bread or Navajo tacos. During the fry bread contest, you’ll see how it’s made right from starting the fire to making the dough and frying it to perfection. First-time visitors: If your plans include attending the parade (or any aspect of the fair on parade day), you need to plan ahead to get to Window Rock very, very early as Highway 264 between Tse Bonito, New Mexico and Saint Michaels, Arizona fills quickly with thousands of spectators. Once the parade begins, Navajo Nation police close off the highway at Coal Mine Road to Saint Michaels intersections, both coming and going from Lupton and Fort Defiance, and through traffic is not permitted (starting somewhere in the 7-8am timeframe and remaining closed until about 3pm). While visitors don’t need passports to travel on the Navajo Nation, this is a sovereign and self-governing nation with specific tribal laws and regulations enforced by Navajo law officers. Alcoholic beverages and firearms are strictly prohibited throughout tribal lands that run through northeastern Arizona, northwestern New Mexico, and southeastern Utah --- thousands of acres that make the Navajo Nation the largest North American Indian tribe.

To which Martin Begaye, manager of the Navajo Nation Parks and Recreation Department, organizers of the event, adds: “We’re pleased that visitors come here to enjoy our magnificent scenery, but we also want them to know that the true beauty is our unique language, culture, and way of life. The Navajo Nation Fair is a family-fun event for people of all ages and nationalities.”

Once you arrive at the 100-acre fairgrounds (a mile west of Highway 264 and BIA Junction N12 in Window Rock), many attendees head straight for the Dean C. Jackson Arena and one of the most popular events in Indian Country --- rodeo --- several in fact, an All-Indian Rodeo, Senior and Youth Rodeos, and the ever-popular Wild Horse Races.

The Arizona Department of Tourism describes the fair this way:

According to fair publicity: “It’s been said that Indian rodeo is

the most popular sport on the Navajo Nation and rodeo fans can look forward to a razor-sharp showdown of Native American competitors. It just doesn’t get any more rustic and original than Indian rodeo on Indian lands with Indian cowboys.” If the Navajo Nation Fair is on your Bucket List, save some additional time to savor what else Window Rock, the capital of the Navajo Nation near the Arizona-New Mexico border, has to offer. “Unlike other capital cities in the U.S.,” reports the Arizona Department of Tourism Visit Arizona web page, “Window Rock is both a center of political activity and a great venue for cultural, historical, and educational experiences for the entire family.” The fair in September and the PRCA Rodeo over the 4th of July

weekend are two event attractions, but there are other draws to the area too. Like the Navajo Veteran’s Memorial Navajo Tribal Park, a majestic circular rock formation that serves as a backdrop for the capital and home to a hand-carved Code Talker statue that pays tribute to Navajo veterans. Just north of Window Rock is a sanctuary of solitude, Bowl Canyon, home to Asaayi Lake, a few miles off Indian Route 12. Other area attractions include the Navajo Nation Zoo --- the only tribally-owned zoo in the United States --- and the archival Navajo Nation Museum. ADG’s Illegal Gambling Shutdown

On July 9, 2015 in the afternoon, investigators from the Arizona Department of Gaming and members of the Phoenix Police Department served a search warrant at a business named Ten & Two located at 2945 East Bell Road. During the joint operation, almost a dozen people were detained in connection to the business and one will be facing multiple charges including operating an illegal gaming facility, promotion of illegal gambling, and racketeering. Several people who may have been customers inside the business were also arrested for various outstanding warrants or drug offences. Over the past month, investigators have been looking into the business and found it was operating as a sweepstakes based internet café. The illegal gambling operation allowed paying customers to play casino style games on computers inside the business. The games simulated what is often seen on the screens of electronic slot machines inside regulated casinos. However, these businesses often attempt to disguise their illegal activity by changing the games to appear as sweepstakes games. For example, on the screen players might see the word “reveal” instead of the traditional word “spin” as on an electronic slot machine. The change in verbiage does not make these machines nor the business legal under Arizona law. The Arizona Department of Gaming takes complaints about illegal gambling businesses very seriously. These unregulated cash businesses can often attract violent crimes to area neighborhoods, as recently seen in the Phoenix area. The recent partnership between ADG and Phoenix Police has lead to the closure of two of these illegal gambling operations after serving search warrants on each during the past month. Those operations have also lead to the voluntary closure of at least eight other known illegal gambling locations and the eviction of two businesses by their landlords. $

LAUGHLIN, NEVADA By Joe Hagan Director of Marketing, Tropicana Laughlin

TROPICANA LAUGHLIN The First Installment Of “Ask Joe” Arrives

A

s promised, we are bringing our readers closer to the action by answering your questions. We have been letting the mail and e-mails pile up for several months for the first “Ask Joe” installment. Our team has hand-picked a few questions and asked Joe Hagan, the Director of Marketing at the Tropicana Laughlin to provide us with his responses. If you have a question to “Ask Joe” regarding casino marketing, or any other related topic, don’t hesitate to write in. If we select your question, you’ll walk away a winner with a $25 gift card! All you have to do is follow the instructions in the green box at the bottom of the page. For now, let’s enjoy what Joe had to say in response to some of our reader questions! Q: Years ago casinos used to offer lots of "specials" designed to get people to come into the casinos, today they all seem to have disappeared. Sid Leckron – Yuma, AZ A: Sid, I know you are speaking about casinos in general, but the Tropicana Laughlin still has some excellent deals available. Probably the biggest seller is our Steakhouse “Early Bird” Twin Lobster Tails special for $19.99. Second is the Bottomless Pasta Bowl for $7.99 available in Passaggio from Sunday to Tuesday. On Mondays, Tropicana Laughlin offers the Club 50 promotion (for guests over 50 years of age) which provides a free cup of coffee, a $0.99 bagel after earning 25 points and a $1.99 Buffet after earning 50 points. Who can say no to a $1.99 buffet? And lastly, Tuesday through Thursday you can get a Poolside Café bagel sandwich for $1.99 after earning 100 points. Q: Do you receive more comps playing blackjack, video poker, slots or Texas Hold’Em on your players card? Judy Spaulding – Surprise, AZ Judy, that is a tough question because there are a lot of variables involved and these are four very different types of games. Let’s start with establishing that most casinos give comps based on theoretical win, a calculation based on the average hold of a game over a really long period of time. As for the games, we can start with splitting them by live action (Blackjack and Texas Hold’Em) and machine games (slots and

36 Arizona Gaming Guide | August 2015 | azgamingguide.com

video poker). The big difference between these is the human factor. For live action games you have to make sure that the pit boss is tracking your play. This can greatly affect how you earn comps since a missed rating is missed comps, and a rating error can give more comps than you should be getting. So when first sitting down at the tables, make sure they have your card and are rating your play. On machine games, it all depends on the theoretical that is set per machine. Given that all of those things are equal, you should earn comps about equally from all four types of games. It behooves casinos to work diligently to ensure that all patrons of the same level get treated equally, and comps are a big part of that. Q: How much does it really cost a casino to give out free play? Jason Felderman – Marana, AZ A: Another good question! Jason, for all practical purposes, it costs the same as if we gave it as cash or any other item. A lot of people look at free play as it should cost nothing because there is no cash going into the machine. But let’s consider this…when you hit that $1,000 jackpot are you getting cash or free play? Cash of course! Casinos use a mix of free play, dining offers, events and promotions to make a guest’s experience more exciting. Understand that my responses are generated from cases I have seen and are based on my professional experience in the casino

Do you have a question for a Marketing Director? Have you ever wondered about the people working behind the scenes? Do you want to find out how it really works? We know you do and here is your chance to find out! Send your question in an email with “Ask Joe” in the subject to our address at editor@azgamingguide.com and if Joe selects your question to be answered in an upcoming issue, you’ll get a $25 gift card! gaming industry and don’t necessarily represent every casino, player, and situation out there. That’s all for now from Joe, so keep writing in your questions for Joe to answer and have us print in upcoming issues! Country superstars Rascal Flatts will be performing at the Laughlin Event Center on Saturday, September 26, 2015. You can purchase room and ticket packages through the Tropicana Laughlin as they have the best deal in town. Plus, if you are up for a slot tournament with a $2,500 prize pool, the Tropicana Laughlin hosts the River Fund Slot Tournament on the second Sunday of every month. That means the remaining dates for 2015 are August 9, September 13, October 11, November 8 and December 13.

You can enter the tournament for just $5 or by bringing 5 nonperishable food items valued at a $1 each (at least). The tournament is held from 10am to 4pm with the first place winner walking away with $1,000 in free play, second place receives $500 in free play, third wins $250 in free play and 4th through 14th places are also in the “money” with free play. CASINO BINGO By Satara Williams

BINGO PLAYER WINS $60,000 Casino Arizona’s Bingo Bonanza Awards Huge Jackpot

L

ady luck was with Barbara Goguen on June 19. The bingo enthusiast played Casino Arizona’s Bingo Bonanza and hit the jackpot for a whopping $60,000. “Casino Arizona crowns new winners on a daily basis,” said Ramon Martinez, director of public relations for Casino Arizona. “We’re proud to announce Barbara as our latest recipient and can’t wait to see what she does with her earnings.” During Bingo Bonanza, the first 45 numbers are pre-called. Players must then score a bingo in 50 numbers or less for the big win. As a progressive game, the jackpot starts at a set amount and increases until it is hit. The jackpot has now been reset to $5,000, allowing other hopefuls a chance to join the winner circle. For more information on Casino Arizona’s Bingo games and prizes, call 480.850.7777 or visit CasinoArizona.com/bingo.aspx. $

SAMI’S SMACKDOWN By Sami Becker

THE CASINOS ARE TOO COLD! How To Handle The Indoor Cold With Arizona’s Outdoor Heat

M

ay and June mark the beginning of the hot season in Arizona as all of our readers certainly know. The snowbirds go back to whence they came to return again in six months, and the weather begins to play tricks on everyone. During my recent casino trips in The Valley and Tucson, I heard plenty of people complain about how cold the casinos were. Fellow patrons were making comments about the low temperature, the drafts, and endless variations of the same thing. What really surprised me was how year after year, the same issue of temperature comes up during the same times of the year. Now, of course, I understand. Many casino visitors are sensitive to the cold, and drafts, and to a whole host of other environmental concerns. Especially when many of them, being snowbirds, are escaping the cold to enjoy the heat. of the summer. However, the casinos are trying to regulate temperatures inside their building when not only is the temperature unexpectedly rising outside, but thousands of warm bodies, breathing out warm air, are playing at slot machines which also generate a lot of heat. So, what do they have to do? Make a decision when, exactly, they switch from heating to cooling, and once they start cooling, how cool do they attempt to maintain their property? Just like we all try to avoid turning on the air conditioner at home, the casinos want to wait as long as possible while still maintaining a level of comfort which will be attractive to customers and not harmful to all of the expensive equipment on the casino floor. What happens when the ACs do kick in to high gear because outside it’s over 100 and it’s only May? Well we all feel cold because we are used to not having an air conditioner continually blow a stream of cold air on us while we are inside. Most of us have been trying to enjoy the gorgeous Arizona weather inside by keeping our windows and doors open. I know this will sound really strange, but make sure you dress in layers when you go to a casino, no matter what time of year it may be. Bring a light jacket at the very least, even in the middle

42 Arizona Gaming Guide | August 2015 | azgamingguide.com

Some people may look at this suggestion as completely nuts, or that I sound like a parent chastising a child, but I just think it is practical and will potentially prevent you from going home with a cold because of a draft. No one wants to be sick, right? Realize that your favorite machine may just be right beneath an AC vent, or in the middle of a very cold draft. And, if you decide to plop yourself down at your favorite game for even just 30 minutes, your t-shirt, shorts, and sandals won’t keep you warm, or comfortable for very long, regardless of the time of day. At home, we know where the drafts and the vents are and we will either seek them out or shun them depending on the time of year. But at a casinos, we’re not in control of the AC, so come prepared. And, once the summer is over, the complaints will start about how the casinos are too hot, right? Well, if you remember to start dressing in layers... $

FUN FACTS By Mark Novak

THE KOI FISH IN ASIAN CULTURE Representing Success To Wealth And Riches

T

he koi fish is a domesticated variety of carp originally bred for decorative ponds and landscaping in the Chinese and Japanese cultures over the last two centuries.

Many of the Asian cultural attributes of the koi symbolize several lessons and even trials individuals often encounter in life. The koi fish has a powerful and energetic life force, demonstrated by its ability to swim against currents, travel upstream, and even up rapids and waterfalls. Some of the characteristics associated with the koi include: Good Fortune, Success, Prosperity, Longevity, Courage, Ambition, and Perseverance. Since koi come in many different colors and patterns, the two most important for us casino visitors are: Ogon - This solid, silver colored koi symbolically represents success in business and wealth. Yamabuki The Yamabuki koi is gold in coloring and symbolizes riches and wealth. $
