Q: I have a multi-part question involving Video Poker. 1. Do all Video Poker games use a standard 52 card deck? 2. If so, how do they determine different payback percentages? 3. How does the RNG [Random Number Generator] prevent drawing duplicate cards? James Johnston—Quartzite, AZ
Straight Three of a Kind Two Pair Pair of Jacks or Better
A: Thanks for the great question James!
Please note the change in Total Return and Casino Hold by a total of 1.2361% between the two tables!
1. All Video Poker games use standard 52 card decks. The single exception is a Video Poker game variant called Joker Poker which, obviously, uses a 53 card deck by combining the standard 52 card deck with a Joker card. Video Poker games which have multiple hands, like triple play, or even hundred play, all use individual 52 card decks. Unless you are playing Joker Poker, then it’s a 53 card deck in play. You can easily verify this by entering the “Help,” “Pay Table,” or “Game” menu on your favorite Video Poker slot machine. The menu will explain the Video Poker game uses a 52 (or 53) card deck along with other game rules. 2. Different payback percentages are determined by the pay table of the Video Poker game. For example, many Jacks or Better Video Poker games at casinos have the following pay table and payback percentage at a five credit wager (or max bet). HAND Royal Straight Flush Four of a Kind Full House Flush Straight Three of a Kind Two Pair Pair of Jacks or Better
PAY 4,000 250 125 30 25 20 15 10 5 TOTAL RETURN: CASINO HOLD:
RETURN 1.9914% 0.5400% 5.9053% 6.9064% 5.4556% 4.5134% 22.3288% 25.8501% 21.5052% 94.9961% 5.0039%
If you unwisely choose to play this game at less than max bet, anywhere from a wager of 1 to 4 credits, but for the sake of argument, let’s say one credit, the Jacks or Better pay table on a Video Poker slot machine at a casino changes to the following: HAND Royal Straight Flush Four of a Kind Full House Flush
PAY 250 50 25 6 5
RETURN 0.4967% 0.5248% 5.9118% 6.9103% 5.6748%
06 Arizona Gaming Guide | February 2017 | azgamingguide.com
4 3 2 1
4.5570% 22.3361% 25.8300% 21.5185% TOTAL RETURN: 93.7600% CASINO HOLD: 6.2400%
What changed that made the totals change? Well for starters the bet changed, but so did the pays, right? Of course they changed! The pays should be five times smaller because the bet became five times smaller. Except for one pay. That one pay didn’t change by a factor of five. The pay for the Royal Flush went from a pay of 4,000 at a five credit bet down to a pay of 250 for a one credit bet! That change is not due to a factor of five, but rather a factor of sixteen! In turn, because the chances of winning a Royal Flush are the same when playing one credit or the maximum of five, the return percentage changed to a proportionally lower value! And this is how a payback percentage is changed in Video Poker. Change the pays and you get a different payback percentage and the casino gets a different cut over the long run. Now, let’s change the pays on the pay table (at max bet) by increasing the Full House and Flush pays and see what happens! HAND Royal Straight Flush Four of a Kind Full House Flush Straight Three of a Kind Two Pair Pair of Jacks or Better
PAY 4,000 250 125 45 30 20 15 10 5 TOTAL RETURN: CASINO HOLD:
RETURN 1.9807% 0.5465% 5.9064% 10.3610% 6.6087% 4.4917% 22.3346% 25.8558% 21.4585% 99.5439% 0.4561%
Which pay table of Jacks or Better would you rather play? This last one of course! Actually, let’s play game designer ourselves and see if we can come up with a “fair” game of Video Poker for both the player and the casino. A “fair” game would be one where the payback percentage is 100%. With a little sweat and some fancy math handiwork, I think we can say the following is pretty close to a “fair” Video Poker pay table. But do you think the casinos would go for it if this pay table was made available to them? We think not, for the obvious reason!

HAND Royal Straight Flush Four of a Kind Full House Flush Straight Three of a Kind Two Pair Pair of Jacks or Better
PAY RETURN 4,888 2.7157% 250 0.5564% 125 5.8878% 45 10.3367% 30 6.6729% 20 4.5234% 15 22.2495% 10 25.7839% 5 21.2737% TOTAL RETURN: 100.0000% CASINO HOLD: 0.0000%
Extending our answer even further, this last table tells you
when this Jacks or Better Video Poker becomes a “fair” game if a progressive is attached. So, for this example, with a 9/6 Jacks or Better pay table, if the progressive rises to $4,888 for a dollar game ($1,222 on a quarter game), the game is “fair” at that time. Anything above that amount and the game is actually in your favor at that moment, and not in the favor of the casino! 3. To keep track of cards which are already used and to prevent errors involving dealing secondary cards, the computer software running the slot machine has an algorithm designed into it for this purpose. In fact, almost all computer programmers will either encounter this exercise (called drawing without replacement) early on in their studies, or if self-taught, early in their careers! $

TABLE GAMES By Al Moe
DON’T FALL FOR THESE MISTAKES An Overview Of How To Approach Gambling At The Tables
P
laying table games like Blackjack and Pai Gow is my favorite way to gamble, but sometimes I have to remember that gambling is just like the ocean. The experience always starts great, but when I lose, I get seasick. So, take my advice instead of reaching for the Pepto-Bismol … learn the basics, respect your cash, and have fun! Based on those ideas, here are a few things you can do at the tables that will improve your likelihood of winning. You Have a Lifetime to Gamble Gambling is wagering on the unknown, so try not to sweat it if you have a bad night. And remember not to throw good money after bad. You can’t learn everything in one day (because it’s impossible), and you don’t have to try and get even if you have a bad run. The cards run funny for everyone, no matter your skill level. When things go bad, don’t make the mistake of thinking things will turn around soon. Call it a day while reminding yourself you can come back another time; casinos are open 24/7. At the very least, take that hunger you have to one of the restaurants in the casino and get a break from the pressure of gambling. You’ll make better decisions when you aren’t hungry, or tired, or sweating the bucks you just lost. And, if you have too much alcohol, you’ll find that drinks aren’t really free. Gambling is Entertainment Most people head to the casino for a little fun, so don’t ruin things by risking more money than you can afford. Set a specific budget for gambling, just like you would for a round of golf or a nice meal. Then, refrain from dipping into your wallet for an ATM card and getting more cash. That’s likely to compound the agony since it’s rare for a player to dig themselves out from a deep loss! Treat your bankroll like a good friend, and it will stick with you through thick and thin. Toss it all on a table, and you may soon be parted.
Another personal choice is refusing to leave when you are losing, as mentioned above, and the flip-side, refusing to leave when you are winning. There’s nothing wrong with quitting a winner. In fact, it’s a great thing to do! Choosing the Wrong Table I’m not talking about going to Pai Gow or Let It Rid e when you want 21 (although that might be bad too), I’m talking about playing at a table with a higher limit than you want. You’ve got to give yourself a fighting chance, and playing at a high limit table on a short bankroll is a bad idea. If your bankroll only allows you to make a few wagers, you’re likely to go broke quickly and ruin your evening. Make sure you have at least 20 units to start. Next month, we’ll look at wagering mistakes to avoid! $
Being Superstitious is Unlucky I’ve heard players say they don’t use their Player’s Club card because it makes them unlucky. Well, I think the harder you study the games you play, the luckier you’ll get, and the only thing unlucky about a Player’s Club card is that you don’t earn any benefits if you refuse to use it. Still, that’s a personal choice.

WINNING WAYS By Mark Novak
THE SCIENCE OF PLAYING SLOTS—I Expert Slot Machine Game Designers Reveal Secrets And Strategies
W
hile the internet and technology in general are great tools, both continue to make bogus information and lies more readily available to the world than the truth. When we started the Arizona Gam ing Guid e , it was our intention to publish a magazine dedicated to slot machine fans with a focus on providing fact based strategy for slots and all other casino games in addition to dispelling any myths and incorrect information available to the general public. In our opinion, we have the knowledge to accomplish that mission better than any other source on casino gambling because, as a team, we have decades of critical experience working in the casino industry. And, most importantly, we actually design slot machines with our bare hands—that is, our bare computers! Who better to reveal the truth than the people who put the games together from scratch? To date, we have yet to encounter an accurate source on casinos and slot machines on the internet, radio, TV, or in any form of print, aside from our publication. Please don’t believe what you read, see or hear about casinos and slots out there because, overwhelmingly, most is wrong. What is really hard to bear is listening to the strategies on playing the slots that we overhear on the casino floors. Most players and so-called advice givers focus on these common questions: What slot do I play? When is the best time to play? Which casino is the best/luckiest/loosest? How do I know when a slot is going to hit? What bet should I play in order to win? When do I give up on this game and try a new one? How do I get out of a losing streak? How do I keep a winning streak going? Which machines are set up? Should I use my player’s club card? And on and on…but you get the idea! What we want you to understand is that our professional experience working in the casino gaming industry is rooted deeply in the sciences. We present facts, not falsehoods. Reason, not guesses. Advice based on an intimate knowledge of how a slot machine operates. Not advice based on a hunch from a “professional gambler” or a know-it-all (who may live with you!). And certainly not from someone who is trying to promote their own self worth, or is trying to sell you something!
Over the course of the next several issues, we’d like to dedicate this section to dispensing some truly practical advice for all of our slot loving readers and fans out there! A lot of the advice we’ll present will help answer the questions posed earlier (which are actually your questions!) and dispense plenty more strategy beyond those questions. Where we’d like to begin is with an analogy. Think back to when you were younger and bought that precious ticket to an amusement park. The entire point was to ride rollercoasters, Ferris wheels, spinning swings, and so on. Once you selected a ride, that ride was supposed to entertain you. Some rides were fun, some were boring, others were somewhere in-between, some just had one element in them (like going backwards, or a really big hill) that kept you interested regardless of the fact the remainder of the experience was not very remarkable. Does this sound like a familiar memory from your childhood? More likely than not, if you are at the casino now, you are somewhat of a risk-taker by nature and elements of risk are part of your life in one way or another going all the way back to childhood! This risk-taking nature, and the reward we get from the thrill of risking or the feeling when the risk pays off, is why many people enjoy amusement park rides and enjoy gambling! Extending our amusement park analogy to the casino, you can easily identify many parallels and one massive difference. (To be completely honest, it took us a while to find a decent “real world” analogy for a casino and slot machines until we finally settled on amusement parks and roller coasters!) Any idea what the major difference is between casinos and amusement parks? Ok, ok, we are laying it on a little thick! Randomness. As you well know, the outcomes on the slots are determined by a random number generator. Other casino games have randomness designed directly into their structure. While an amusement park and the rides therein present a specific experience, a casino game provides gamblers with an experience governed by random behavior. We don’t particularly want roller coasters to exhibit random behavior—although they do feel as if they behave that way at times—but we do want random behavior from our casino games! In the end, the amusement park takes money in exchange for amusement. And, in keeping with the analogy, in the end, the casino also takes money in exchange for entertainment. $

WIN UP TO $3,500,000 ON A SCRATCHER! Arizona Lottery To Launch First $30 Ultimate Millions Ticket
T
he Arizona Lottery is launching the state’s first-ever $30 Scratchers ticket, Ultimate Millions, and the payout is even bigger than the tickets themselves!
The new game kicks off in February, bringing bold 12-inch tickets with a green holographic background and large fonts to Lottery retailers. The only thing more eye-catching is the payout, with four top prizes over $3.5 million. This first-ever $30 ticket offers the highest payout in Arizona Lottery history. It’s a flashy new ticket perfect for active players who are eager to win! “The highest priced tickets we’ve had in market were the $185 Million Cash Explosion and its successor, the $200 Million Cash Explosion, both priced at $20, and we saw an overwhelming success with both,” said Gregg Edgar, Executive Director of the Arizona Lottery. “It only made sense for our team to think about introducing a ticket with an even higher price point. Our core players love the prize structures of the tickets with the high price points, and this $30 ticket will have an even better prize structure and better odds than our $20 tickets. The increased ticket price will generate higher commissions for our retailer partners, as well as increased transfers to vital programs across the state.” Improved odds of winning top prizes also set the $30 Ultim ate Millions ticket apart from other Scratchers tickets. Those who don’t win the top prizes can still win cash prizes ranging from $30 to $100,000. Players will have a 1 in 2.5 chance of winning any of the cash prizes, and the $30 Ultim ate Millions has more than $83 million in cash prizes available to lucky Arizona players. The $30 Ultim ate Millions stands out because of the ticket’s larger play area, including a chance to multiply your winnings by 100 times. Additionally, the ticket will have three bonus boxes to scratch where players can instantly win a cash prize of $50, $100 or $500. “Aside from the regular game play on this ticket, players get more chances to win with the 100X multiplier and the three bonus boxes. It’s like a cherry on top!” Edgar said. “We chose this play style because it is familiar to our core players, and we are anxious to see the response about this new game play experience with instant wins, increased odds and the historic top prizes.” The $30 Ultim ate Millions Scratchers ticket will be available February 7, 2017 and players can purchase tickets at all 2,900+ Arizona Lottery retailers. For more information about Ultim ate Millions and other Arizona Lottery games, please visit their website at arizonalottery.com. $ Scratchers® is a registered service mark of the California Lottery.

10 Strategies To Maximize Your Entertainment Dollars By Lana Hartmann
V
isiting the casino is a fun and exciting entertainment option. Whether you enjoy playing the slots, trying your luck at the tables, or hoping for the chance to be able to yell out “BINGO,” you will find a varied selection of gaming opportunities in the casinos here in Arizona. If you are considering participating in this form of recreation, you need a game plan. You have to be just as organized about a night out at the casino as you would be preparing a party or doing you weekly grocery shopping. For example, looking through the weekly ads and collecting coupons can save you a lot of money on your groceries. Also, writing out a grocery list introduces order to your shopping and prevents you from going over your budget or forgetting items you may need to go back for again later. The path towards a “lucky” and “winning” year is to follow some basic guidelines outlined in this article. If some of the topics are already part of your routine, good for you! Spend the extra time to introduce yourself to those concepts you are not familiar with. No matter what, use this opportunity to make a change and approach your casino entertainment in a new way this new year. We are certain this can only assist you in having a continued positive experience at the casino for this year and for many more years to come. Happy New Year! Good luck and have fun! 1. Establish A Bankroll. Every smart gambler plans in advance as to how much money will be spent during a particular casino visit. Your bankroll is the amount of money you are willing to spend on wagering. Remember that you should also plan a separate bankroll for transportation, food, drink, lodging, tips, sundries, and so on. Don’t count your winnings as part of your bankroll, or use them to “adjust” the bankroll as your casino visit progresses. And, leave the plastic at home! Withdrawing money at the casino can result in exorbitant fees. 2. Always Use A Player’s Card. Sign up for a player’s club card and never make a single wager at a casino without using the card, no matter what your favorite game is. From bingo to live
24 Arizona Gaming Guide | February 2017 | azgamingguide.com
keno and everything else in between, make sure you have and use your player’s club card at all times. Having signed up for the club, the casino will offer you valuable coupons and information on promotions in the mail or through e-mail if you prefer. Not many establishments are willing to reward you for your patronage in the same way as the casinos. So, take advantage of all the freebies offered to you for your loyalty because you deserve them! 3. Set Your Own Rules. Make a serious resolution for yourself this year when it comes to your participation in casino entertainment. Commit to a set of rules you agree to follow and make them reasonable for yourself. Don’t make multiple goals which are extremely difficult to adhere to. For example, I plan to make X casino visits this year. During each visit I make, I will set aside a bankroll of Y dollars for gaming per day. Z dollars (of the Y dollars per day) will be used to play Video Poker and the remainder will be used to play $5 Blackjack. This kind of selfdiscipline pays off over time. 4. Slow Down. Play one machine at a time. Playing two or three machines at once just means you are risking your money two to three times faster. Don’t play frantically. Sit back, relax, and have fun. While playing your favorite slot, wait for the credits to rack up. Avoid using the quick spin feature and enjoy the sounds and animations the slot manufacturers have designed for winning combinations. Your money will last longer. When playing at the tables, don’t play one-on-one against the dealer. Play with more people which will naturally slow down the game play and the number of hands. And, don’t forget to schedule breaks. Wear a watch and keep track of the time. Set an alarm if you have to! 5. Use Promotions & Offers During Casino Off-Peak Times. Casinos offer great deals during the week on food, lodging, and golf. Playing with a player’s club card could even earn you 2x to 10x more points on a weekday. Many casinos also offer short, usually 15 or 20 minute, free tournaments that give you a chance to win cash and prizes without having to risk any of your own bankroll.
6. Play The Slots Wisely. Always be familiar with the game you are playing. The best way to do this is to read the pay table rules! Know what the minimum and maximum bet requirements are. When playing a slot connected to a progressive, know if you need to be playing the maximum number of credits to be eligible for the progressive. You don’t want to be feeding the meters without even having a chance at the progressive! Understand that the penny slots have the largest house advantage. The higher the denomination, the higher the payback percentage! Be aware that Video Poker, when played optimally, tends to be the best slot to play on a casino floor. Just make sure to keep your eye out for the best pay tables! 7. Break All Larger Bills Into Smaller Bills. It takes much less effort to spend $100 when it’s already in the machine then when you have to reach five times in your wallet for a twenty dollar bill each time. By the same token, limit your play with tickets. Holding a $200 ticket just doesn’t feel the same as holding cold, hard cash in your hands. If you win a significant amount on a slot machine, cash it out! There is much less temptation to play through the money and give it all back. 8. Know Your Game. If you have a favorite game, then you should learn everything you can about it. All casino games are based on defined rules which you can learn, understand, and recall at a moment’s notice if needed. Realize that most people
have little to no idea about the casino game they enjoy playing the most. Many table poker players use this to their advantage time and time again. You should definitely be the most knowledgeable poker player at your table, not someone else. You should understand how a slot machine game works before you play it. You should play Video Poker using optimal strategy. 9. Love Your Game. You’ve got to love the game you are playing. Negativity and disillusionment are very serious distractions when engaging in casino entertainment. If you no longer feel passionate about a particular game, it’s time to move on. The excitement has to be there in order for you to enjoy the game itself. Without some sort of spark; monotony, boredom, and loss of concentration will interfere with your enjoyment. Having a keen interest and truly enjoying a game will keep you sharp! 10. Play And Build Your Status At One Casino. Your comps will be much nicer if you spend $100 at the same casino rather than $20 at five different ones. Plus, the better your status the nicer the rewards. We’re not saying play at only one casino all the time. Arizona has wonderful gaming options for day and overnight excursions, but limit your play to predominantly one casino for your regular excursions. Pay very close attention to which one provides you with the best customer service, your favorite comps and offers, and the best loyalty program. We wish you a lot of luck and fun in 2017! $ azgamingguide.com | February 2017 | Arizona Gaming Guide

Problem Gambling: Hope And Help Is Available Arizona’s Office Of Problem Gambling Hosts Annual Symposium
You probably know someone who has had problems with gambling. Gambling addiction affects 3 to 5 million people in the United States alone every year. Problem gambling can have devastating consequences that can affect all aspects of people’s lives. Not only do problem gamblers experience financial consequences, but there are emotional and even physical consequences that can affect themselves, as well as their families and friends. Gambling can be defined as risking money or valued items, or sometimes behaviors, in the hope of gaining something of greater value. The majority of people can gamble for the purpose of recreation and entertainment without it leading to problems. People will spend relatively small amounts of their disposable income on occasional gambling activities such as purchasing lottery tickets, attending a day of racing at the horse track, or spending an evening with friends at a local casino. They do not anticipate that they will necessarily win, and they enjoy themselves. Gambling is not the focus of their activities. However, some individuals will gamble with the money they intended to use for their living expenses. They may experience what could be considered a high during the activity or they may lose track of time as they escape into their gambling behavior. They often will experience extreme emotions in relation to wins and losses that could result in depression, anger, or even in some cases violence. What is called Pathological gambling was first recognized as a medical disorder in 1980. At that time, it was included as a diagnosis in the DSM-II by the American Psychiatric Association. DSM stands for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders. It is the manual published by the American Psychiatric Association which lists all classifications of mental disorders. Most recently, in the DSM-IV, pathological gambling was reclassified from an impulse disorder to an actual addiction. The DSM-5 indicates that the symptoms of Gambling Disorder are: Gambling which persistently and repeatedly leads to clinically significant impairment or distress over a 12 month period, as indicated by four or more of the following criteria: 1) Tolerance—the need to gamble with progressively more money to achieve the desired level of excitement.
30 Arizona Gaming Guide | February 2017 | azgamingguide.com
2) Withdrawal—restlessness and irritability accompanying efforts to cut back/stop gambling. 3) Repeated unsuccessful attempts to cut back/stop gambling. 4) Preoccupation with gambling, including ruminating on past gambling, planning future gambling, or thinking of ways to acquire money for gambling. 5) Self-soothing and medicating mood with gambling. 6) Chasing losses—following a gambling loss, further gambling is engaged in to try to recover the losses. 7) Shame—engages in lies to hide the extent of gambling. 8) Intrusion of consequences or time spent gambling into peripheral areas of life (work, education, and relationships). 9) Becomes reliant on others for money for expenses that have been depleted due to gambling. 10)The gambling behavior is not better accounted for by a manic episode. In Arizona, we are fortunate to have hope and help available to those who may be suffering from a gambling addiction. The Arizona Department of Gaming; Division of Problem Gambling has a toll free 24-hour helpline where people can gain information and access resources from experienced counselors. 1-800-NEXT-STEP offers free, confidential information to anyone who calls. Additionally, information can be accessed from the Division of Problem Gambling’s website; problemgambling.az.gov. There you can find other resources including: Tribal/State funded outpatient treatment Information on the Self-Exclusion Program; offering a voluntary process to exclude themselves from tribal casinos. Educational information of the disorder of Problem Gambling The Arizona Division of Problem Gambling also holds a symposium each year on problem gambling. This year, renowned experts in the field including; Dr. Jon Grant Professor of Psychiatry & Neuroscience from the University of Chicago and Keith Whyte the Executive Director of the National Council on Problem Gambling will be the Keynote speakers. Both of these presenters have decades of knowledge and experience in the field of Problem Gambling. Multiple topics will be presented at this year’s symposium and it is open to the public. The symposium will be held at the Black Canyon Conference Center on Monday, March 6, 2017 from 8am to 4pm. For more info, visit problemgambling.az.gov, or call 1.480.990.1887. $

America’s favorite arena rock group, Styx, is returning to Desert Diamond Casino’s Diamond Center on Friday, February 24. Tickets start at $25 and are on sale through Star Tickets and the Rewards Center. “Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto” may be an integral part of pop culture, referenced on shows such as South Park and The Simpsons, but this signature song epitomizes the attitude held by this group of musicians, together known as Styx. With an openly hostile view of materialism, consumerism, and unemployment, Styx grew from their artsy progressive rock image into one of the country’s most famous arena rock groups ever. Coming out of Chicago in the early 60s and changing their name as new members were brought on, Styx eventually formed, hitting it big in 1974 with their breakthrough single Lady. They went on to produce some of the most well-known songs around, including Com e Sail Aw ay, Babe, Blue Collar Man, Show Me the Way, and of course, Mr. Roboto. Styx’s biggest success came in 1981 with the release of their concept album Paradise Theater. The album reached the number one spot on the Billboard pop album charts and produced five hit singles, including The Best of Tim es and Too Much Tim e on My Hands. In addition to becoming their fourth multi-platinum album, Paradise Theater helped the band win a People’s Choice Award that same year. Despite several of the band members taking time to try out solo careers, Styx came back together in 1996 for the Return to Paradise tour. It was such a success that the group decided to unite for good and have since performed at Super Bowl pre-game shows, and as recently as 2012, re-recorded two discs’ worth of its classic hits—Regeneration Volume I & II. Treena Parvello, Director of Public Relations and Communications for the Tohono O’odham Gaming Enterprise, said, “Desert Diamond is once again honored to bring rock legends Styx to the Diamond Center! SAMI’S SMACKDOWN By Sami Becker
STOP OTHER PEOPLE’S NEGATIVITY Shut Down The Senseless Comments And Move On
W
henever I am in an elevator at a casino and it stops on the way down, I always cringe. I’m sure I’m not alone with this feeling. I always hope the individuals coming on won’t say much beyond the typical pleasantries. Unfortunately, human beings love sharing and feel the need to enjoy the company of other people who will embrace their misery by validating their emotions with similar experiences. So, the big booming “Are we all going to the same place?” or “Are you making your deposit downstairs now or did you already do it today?” Not to be outdone by “Well, it looks like all of us are going to have lighter wallets pretty soon” or the most insidious “Are you winning or losing?” followed by the parting jab “Are those suitcases for all the money you’re going to win?” Wow! Yikes! These commentaries are not funny and for those who do laugh at them, it’s just a way to deal with an uncomfortable
42 Arizona Gaming Guide | February 2017 | azgamingguide.com
situation. These inane comments are filled with negativity and don’t belong in an environment where people go to relax, have fun and be entertained. Here’s how to make sure you beat the negativity of others: get off the elevator and use the stairs as soon as someone walks on, agree with whatever stupid comment they just made and focus on something else, or just strike up a conversation you can control all the way down to the bottom. Just don’t let it get to you! $

FUN FACTS By Lana Hartmann
THE POWER OF POSITIVE THINKING The Mayo Clinic Lists Multiple Benefits To Optimism
A
ccording to information on the Mayo Clinic website, mayoclinic.org, your personality traits can affect your health, quality of life, and longevity.
If you look at the world through eyes that always see the glass half full it may help your body remain healthy even during times of stress, regardless of if the stress is emotional or physical. Your personality and outlook on life can even affect your significant other and close relatives or friends, for good or for bad. So, maybe it is time to take a look inward and reflect on how you view the world. Do you wake up grumbling or do you wake up happy? Are you the type of person who is sarcastic, ironic and focused on all of the problems you perceive around you or are you joyful, compassionate, empathetic, and roll with
the punches (if any) that life throws your way? Once you’ve determined where you stand, don’t think you are stuck. Personal improvement is just around the corner. Identify areas you can change, check yourself, be open to humor, follow a healthy lifestyle, surround yourself with positive people, practice positive selftalk and consider visiting the online resources on positivity at the website mayoclinic.org! $
