PLAYERS TALK

Q: I love playing Caveman Keno. I wonder why the various casinos, when you use their player's cards, don't assign as many play credits as they do to penny, nickel, quarter and dollar video machines. I put $100 through and get relatively few points. My husband plays penny slots and is already a top player card member. Seems very wrong! Christine Angelini – Fountain Hills, AZ A: Christine, we love Cave m an K e no too! Your question is great and gets to the heart of any player’s club program and how long, on average, a bankroll can last on a particular game! There’s so much to talk about, more than can be discussed in this response! First, concerning the player’s club structure. All casino player’s clubs operate on a basic principle. In general, the rules are quite simple: spend money, get points, the more points earned, the higher the player’s club level attained. But that doesn’t mean that all bets are equal! Spend some time doing a little homework on each player’s club. Start by visiting each casino’s website and determine if there is any information about the player’s club on the website. Then, determine the type of information. What is of particular use to player’s club holders is the value of one point in terms of dollars to the player’s club program. Look for statements similar to “$10 in coin-in ($20 coin-in for video poker) = 1 point,” or “Earn 1 Tier Credit for every $5 you play on a reel slot machine and for every $10 you play on a video poker machine.” Some machines have lower earn rates and these games will be clearly marked with the different rate. Perhaps a casino website might communicate the earning relationship between money and points using the following statement “Earn one point for every $1 of coin-in on our slot machines. Earn one point for every $2 of coin-in on video poker.” No matter the method, the end result is the same. The casino has just provided the formula for money into points. If you can’t find it online, try in person. March right up to the player’s club and ask how much does it cost to earn one point. Make sure to ask if there are any differences between machines and games! Casinos will distinguish between slots, video poker, video keno, table games, bingo, live poker, live keno, etc. Some casinos will even allow you to earn points with hotel stays, purchases at gift shops, meals at dining outlets, and so on. What must be understood while performing this type of analysis is to always compare apples with apples. So, examining the statements gleaned from casino websites above, we can already see three different basic rates as follows. $10 = 1 point, $5 = 1 point, and $1 = 1 point. Now that’s only across three casinos willing to share their information online! For video poker, the

06 Arizona Gaming Guide | April 2017 | azgamingguide.com

relationships are the same. $20 = 1 point, $10 = 1 point, and $2 = 1 point. However, that still doesn’t give you a complete picture. Just because there is a factor of 10, or 5 difference between the ratio of dollars to points in this example doesn’t mean the player’s club where $1 = 1 point is “the best.” Perhaps the player’s club with the one-to-one relationship is “the cheapest,” but what does that mean? Let’s examine the tier levels as indicated on their respective websites by these three player’s clubs. The lowest level requires no minimum points, and the next level up requires 2,000, 5,000, and 100,000 points respectively. This means a player has to play a total of $20,000, $25,000, and $100,000 (respectively) on the slots in order to move up from the basic level to the next tier level in the player’s clubs. Now which club is “the best?” Well, are we comparing apples with apples yet? Hold on! Let’s examine the benefits of attaining the increased tier level. The first player’s club offers Free Play, Complimentary Food, Direct Mail Offers, Bonus Promotion Entries, Complimentary Concert/ Event Tickets, and Quarterly Promotions. The second player’s club offers Free Play, Complimentary Food, Direct Mail Offers, Hotel Stays, Special Offers and Promotions, a 15% discount at the gift shop, and Concert Tickets. The third player’s club offers Free Play, 10% off at the gift shop, 10% off dining, 10% off the hotel, Complimentary Food, Direct Mail Offers, a VIP Lounge, a Birthday Bonus, VIP Events, Hotel Stays, a Point Multiplier, and Concert Tickets. Now are we ready to make an assessment as to which player’s club is “the best?” Well, you may be, but we’re not. The casino won’t tell you how much free play or how much complimentary food can be earned and what the ratio is to each dollar spent or point earned. That has to be done by trial and error. The best way to test this out is to keep track of the allocated gambling budget at each casino and wait for the offers and comps to roll in. Then, perhaps, one player’s club will outshine the other! Second, let’s discuss the points earned while playing slots versus video poker. In many casinos, video poker machines earn points at half the rate of a slot machine. This is consistent across all three examples we used earlier. Why? The answer is quite straightforward. Video poker machines have a higher long run payback percentage than most slot machines. If we use the worst Jacks or Better Video Poker pay table available to casinos (this doesn’t mean casinos use it), the long run payback percentage drops to a low of around 95%. And the percentage doesn’t get any lower, it can only go higher! This means

PLAYERS TALK

Continued from page 6

the casino’s long run hold is around 5% at best. If $100,000 is wagered on this video poker game, the casino expects to retain 5% or $5,000 at most. Slots, however, especially penny slots, don’t have a high long run return to player percentage. Most penny slots have a payback percentage of around 90%. Some slots have a return-toplayer percentage in the mid-eighties! This means the casino’s long run hold is twice as high as video poker. Since the casino hold is about 10%. If $100,000 is wagered on this penny slot, the casino expects to retain $10,000. Now the reasoning behind the different ratio becomes clear. A casino expects to earn more, on average and in the long run, with slots than it does with video poker. Video keno is generally offered within a video poker machine. Unfortunately that is how the slot manufacturers provide video keno to casinos. Video keno is packaged with video poker. Of course, there are exceptions and casinos can just order video keno, but that’s an infrequent occurrence. So, most players are now stuck at the low earning rate set by video poker when playing video keno. Don’t despair! Make it a personal quest to find exclusively video keno machines which do not offer video poker. Most casinos look at video keno alone as a slot and not video poker and players can take advantage of the improved earning rate! The reasoning behind this lies again with the game’s payback percentage.

Slots, speaking generally, tend to have much better odds of obtaining a winning spin. I’m sure you know some games where you’ll bet 25 credits and win at least 5 back almost every spin. Well, that translates into an extended bankroll when each spin provides some return. Cavem an Keno only returns multiples of a bet back, not fractions of a bet like the slots! We’d suggest you track your play next time! Each of you take $100 and compare notes at the end of one play session. How many spins did you each have? How much money did each of you win, even the small wins? How did that help stretch the $100? How many points did each of you earn? Repeat this exercise at least ten times and you’ll start to see a pattern emerge. Let’s repeat the critical hint: Look for the stand alone video keno machines allowing you to play at the rate of a slot player, even if it means switching casinos! For those of you who aren’t familiar with Cavem an Keno , this video keno variant allows for a multiplier of 4X or 8X (sometimes a 10X) when players hit on two of three or three of three eggs. The eggs are randomly selected at the beginning of a spin. In general, the pay tables with an 8X multiplier are worse than those with a 10X multiplier. Unfortunately, many of the 10X pay tables are disappearing from casino floors as machine and software upgrades take place. Frequently you’ll find better pay tables at higher denominations. Good Luck! $

Caveman Keno has a payback percentage which ranges from around 82% up to 95% depending on the pay table used and the number of spots selected. That falls more into the slot range rather than the video poker range, allowing a casino to offer a better dollars to point relationship. Furthermore, Cavem en Keno can be an extremely brutal game. Your $100 on Cavem an Keno will guarantee you 400 plays on a quarter version, but not much of a chance at winning any bankroll sustaining wins because of Cavem an Keno’s relatively poor odds of receiving a winning spin. Depending on the spots you choose to play, the most favorable situation can be once every three spins, with some spots providing wins far fewer than once every several spins!

TABLE GAMES By Al Moe

HOW TO PLAY CHASE THE FLUSH Ask To Play This New Card Game In Casinos Across The State!

T

here’s a new poker table game in town called Chase the Flush and players will notice it resembles both High Card Flush and Ultimate Texas Hold’em. It’s a combo deal. It’s also a game played with a standard English deck of 52 cards but no Joker or Wild Cards. And, like most poker games these days, it takes two mandatory bets to play. After players get chips, they are required to bet on the Ante spot and the adjacent X-Tra bonus spot in equal amounts. Players may also wager on the Sam e Suit Bonus side wager, but we’ll get to that in a minute. After all wagers are placed, the players and the dealer each receive three cards. Only the players look at their cards; the dealer is in it until the end and players compete to beat the dealer’s best flush hand with their three cards and the four community cards that follow. Everyone uses all seven cards to make their best flush hand. The dealer must make at least a 3-card flush of 9-high to qualify. After seeing their three cards, players have the option to check or wager 3x their Ante bet in the All in spot. Then the dealer turns over two of the community cards and asks the players how they wish to proceed. If they haven’t already bet on the All in spot, they now may check, or wager 2x their Ante bet on the All in spot. Finally, the dealer turns over the remaining two community cards. Now the players who have not wagered on the All in spot must fold or bet 1x their Ante wager. Then, the dealer exposes their own three cards and announces their best flush hand. How to Win at Chase the Flush Players must beat the dealer’s flush hand to win but, again, the dealer must qualify. If the dealer does not qualify, the Ante bet is a push. If the dealer does qualify, the player wins if their flush is more cards (such as 5-cards over 4-cards) than the dealer’s. If the dealer and player hold the same number of flush cards (such as 3-cards each), then the highest card will win. When the player has the higher flush hand, they win the Ante and All in bets – even money. The X-Tra Bonus wager is a tie un-

less the player has at least a 4-card flush. Then payments are based on the payout chart. When the player and dealer tie (such as 3-card flushes running K-8-4 each), all three wagers push. When the dealer has the better flush hand, the player loses the Ante, All in and X-Tra bets. Same Suit Wager The optional Sam e Suit Bonus wager pays only when the player and dealer’s flushes are of the same suit, and the player’s flush is at least 4-cards. The player does not have to win the hand to be paid on the Sam e Suit Bonus wager. Strategy Make the All in 3x bet with any three suited cards or two suited face cards, or check. Make the All in 2x bet with any three suited cards. Make the All in 1x bet with any three suited cards or two suited pairs of face cards. It’s one more bet, so go ahead. $ Writer Al Moe has worked in the casino industry for many years. He has lived and worked in Las Vegas, Reno, and Lake Tahoe. WINNING WAYS By Mark Novak

THE SCIENCE OF PLAYING SLOTS—III Expert Slot Machine Game Designers Reveal Secrets And Strategies

S

ince the February 2017 issue of the Arizona Gam ing Guide, we have introduced a series of articles in our Winning Ways section. To read the previous issues, head over to our website’s Back Issues page available at azgamingguide.com! We know our readers are ready for this month’s installment of “The Science of Playing Slots” in which we examine whether or not slot machines are “set up.” One of the most frequently asked questions we have received from family, friends, people we interact with, and our loyal readers over the years is certainly the following: Are the slot machines in the casinos set up? I’m sure our readers would appreciate the short answer, so I’ll provide it, and then proceed to explain why (i.e. provide the long answer anyway). The short answer is no. Anybody who says otherwise is selling something (and there are many people). If they aren’t selling something, then (and I don't want to be rude here) they just don’t know the facts of how slot machines, casinos, and the gaming industry in general operates. Few people do. Even those who do work in the industry, don’t understand how slot machines and casinos operate. I’ll go one further with the “no” answer which will assuage any fears our readers may have. The casino has no slot machines (or any electronic gaming devices) on their floor which are “set up” to do anything. The next question a reader might pose when presented with this information would be: How do I know? I just do, because I (and other members of the staff here at the Arizona Gaming Guide) were in a position to be hired to do the “secret” work of the industry. I’ll let you in on some of those “secrets” right now! First of all (I love lists!), all slot machines are governed by a random number generator verified by the slot’s manufacturer, an independent third party and at least one state gaming regulatory agency to be mathematically random. Second, I was the guy who personally performed and verified the statistical and mathematical testing on four separate slot

machine platforms across my career as a slot machine game designer and mathematician. After having tested four game platforms, all of which were approved by gaming regulatory bodies all over the world, testing was performed by people who worked for me. I know the slots are random, I helped make them that way. That was my job. Third, all slots are governed by the random number generator. That is to say, each spin (or hand, or roll, etc.) is independent of previous spins. And each spin’s outcome is determined by the random number generator. Unfortunately, for all those conspiracy theorists out there, casino games are ruled by chance. Even if the game is electronic. Fourth, when a slot machine is designed, it is created to operate over the “long run” which in mathematical and statistical terms means “forever” in terms of time. Realistically, relating the “long run” back to slot machines this means at least one million spins, probably more, way more. So, imagine designing a game with a top prize whose odds of occurring is once in every 250,000 spins. This top prize is mathematically predicted to happen four times across one million spins, or forty times across ten million spins. Put the slot on the floor, let it be played for several years and we can observe millions upon millions of spins (if the game is popular and played a lot). The casino is presented with the information that the top prize hits once every 250,000 spins. But that does not mean the game will hit the top prize every 250,000th spin! No, if we collect all the data on the machine, we’ll be able to calculate an average number of spins for the top award and it will be close to 250,000. How do I know? I’ve actually inserted data collection routines into the software of the games I designed and, years later, asked the casinos for the results. Fifth, casinos can’t set up slots. That violates a ton of casino gaming regulations. Actually, it’s literally impossible based on the way the slots are designed. And, finally, all casino games are governed by regulations stating a game (no matter the form) must be fair to the player. So I leave it to our smart and loyal readers, who are you going to believe? The people that worked for the companies that make slots and who actually designed the games from scratch (that’s us!) and who have experience and degrees longer than the Macy’s parade, or that other guy? $ azgamingguide.com | April 2017 | Arizona Gaming Guide

TRIBAL NEWS By Malory Knutson

PASCUA YAQUI TRIBE RECOGNIZED Casino Del Sol Wins First Place Tribal Spirit Of Giving Award

T

he Pascua Yaqui Tribe and their enterprise, Casino Del Sol, was recently recognized with a first-place honor for their Employee Tribal Cultural program at the Tribal Spirit of Giving Awards ceremony during Raving’s 19th annual Indian Gaming National Marketing Conference. The Tribal Spirit of Giving Awards recognize Tribal organizations and their history of uncommon generosity and support to their Native and non-Native communities. These prestigious awards highlight the acts of giving that Tribal casinos and governments have done on behalf of their communities, employees, and customers. “This award reflects the commitment to community and culture that is so important to Casino Del Sol and the Pascua Yaqui Tribe,” said Kimberly Van Amburg, CEO of Casino Del Sol. “To be recognized for something that we hold so dear to our hearts is a source of great pride for our organization, and is the reason we call ourselves the Sol of Tucson.” Each year since Casino Del Sol opened, more than 22 years ago, the Pascua Yaqui Tribe has implemented an Employee Tribal Cultural Program. For four days during the week of Easter, all casino and Tribal operations are closed, to allow the more than 1,500 employees to participate in the Pascua Yaqui Lenten and Easter ceremonies. The Tribe also pays all employees during this time off, allowing them to spend this time with family and friends without worry of financial hardship. This closure allows employees to focus on their cultural festivities without having to choose between their work responsibilities and cultural responsibilities. In addition to the Easter ceremonies, Casino Del Sol also offers time off to employees to participate in important non-Lenten cultural ceremonies, such as honoring a passed on loved one or celebrating other cultural holidays. In the nearly 23 years of this program, Casino Del Sol has sacrificed revenue and paid out more than 500,000 man hours during the Easter holiday. Additionally, more than 250,000 man hours have been paid out for other cultural ceremonies. This is over and above the traditional paid time off most other companies provide which truly shows Casino Del Sol’s appreciation to their employees.

A

new executive chef has been appointed at southern Arizona’s premier entertainment destination: Acclaimed Tucson chef Ryan Clark has been promoted from his position as chef de cuisine at PY Steakhouse to executive chef for all of Casino Del Sol. In his new role, Chef Clark will oversee all culinary operations at Casino Del Sol and its sister property, Casino of the Sun. This consists of in-room dining, meetings catering, and the property’s ten restaurants including the Forbes Four Star and Wine Spectator award-winning PY Steakhouse, plus Ume, Tequila Factory, Festa International Buffet, Abuelita’s Taqueria, Moby’s, Oasis Bar, Prema Lobby Lounge, Streetscape Deli, Wildcats Grille and Sunflower Café. “In this new position, I have the opportunity to expand upon what we started at PY Steakhouse one year ago,” said Casino Del Sol’s Executive Chef Ryan Clark. “My vision is to bring the freshest dishes made with local ingredients to all menus across the entire Casino Del Sol property, serving more of our guests exceptional food.” At 32, Tucson native Ryan Clark has a wealth of experience in the food and beverage industry. His career began at the age of 16 when he worked under James Beard winner Alan Zeman at his restaurant Fuego! in Tucson. Then after graduating at the top of his class from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, Clark returned home to Arizona to hone his craft at such notable eateries as Elements at Sanctuary Camelback Mountain, Canyon Ranch Resort & Spa, The Dish Bistro and Lodge on the Desert. In 2013, Clark opened Agustin Kitchen at Mercado San Agustin in Tucson’s burgeoning downtown. With Clark as executive chef and partner, the restaurant received rave reviews and garnered many accolades. In 2016, Clark left Agustin Kitchen to become the chef de cuisine for Casino Del Sol’s PY Steakhouse, where he maintained the restaurant’s stellar ratings and continually elevated the dining experience with his inventive seasonal menus and partnerships with local purveyors. “We are more than excited that Chef Clark is continuing his exemplary career with us at Casino Del Sol,” said Casino Del

Sol’s Executive Director of Food and Beverage Victor Gonzalez. “Just as he brought his culinary magic to PY Steakhouse, we are looking forward to the positive impact his passion and prowess brings to the entire property and the farm fresh cuisine we serve our guests.” In addition to his membership in the American Culinary Federation as a certified executive chef, Chef Clark is a sought-after guest at national and international culinary events, and shares his talents with junior culinary students in Arizona’s Careers through Culinary Arts Program. Get your funk on! Average White Band is widely regarded as one of the best soul and funk bands in the history of music. Though best known for its timeless instrumental mega-hit Pick Up The Pieces, the band' s strength is its accomplished songwriting, stretching across several gold-selling albums and multiple Grammy nominations for Atlantic Records. Even with Scottish roots, the six-piece band got inspiration from R&B heroes - legends like Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Donny Hathaway and others - and developed a unique sound that was enthusiastically received by audiences in the U.S. and throughout the world. While many songs like Cut The Cake and Let's Go Round Again became hit singles, other tracks like Schoolboy Crush and Stop The Rain became much sampled grooves by other artists. Many more tunes, such as Cloud y and A Love Of Your Own are considered among the finest soul album tracks ever recorded.

Show your support Saturday, October 7th! Santana Insurance Agency and event host Mazatzal Hotel & Casino present “Saluting Our Veterans,” a benefit concert featuring the legendary Charlie Daniels Band (CDB). All proceeds specifically benefit local Payson military veteran charities. From his Dove Award winning gospel albums to his genre-defining Southern rock anthems and his CMA Award-winning country hits, few artists have left a more indelible mark on America’s musical landscape than Charlie Daniels. An outspoken patriot, beloved mentor to young artists and still a road warrior at age 80, Charlie has parlayed his passion for music into a multiplatinum career and a platform to support the military, underprivileged children and others in need. His own unique voice as an artist emerged as Charlie recorded his self-titled solo album in 1970 for Capitol Records. Two years later he formed the Charlie Daniels Band and the group scored its first hit with the top ten Uneasy Rid er. Since then, the CDB has populated radio with such memorable hits as Long Haired Country Boy, The South’s Gonna Do It Again, In America, The Legend of Wooley Swamp and of course, his signature song, The Devil Went Dow n to Georgia, which won a Grammy for Best Country Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group in 1979 as well as single of the year at the Country Music Association Awards. This is an outdoor concert, rain or shine, and is open to the public of all ages. Preferred Tickets are $40 advance, $50 day of event. General Admission Tickets are $25 advance, $35 day of event. Gates open at 5pm and the show starts at 7pm. Tickets are available online at their website, mazatzalcasino.com or at the cashier cage. CASINO BINGO

NEW BINGO GAMES AT THE FORT The Fort’s Bingo Hall Debuts Event Tickets & Fast Action Quick Shot

T

he bingo hall at Fort McDowell Casino near Fountain Hills is introducing two brand new bingo games to their April lineup of sessions!

Bingo Event tickets or “Ball Games” are pull tabs with a twist! Event tickets contain 2 ways to win - instant winners and “Hold” tickets used to play along with Bingo, or the event or ball game. They are easy to play and fun to win! There are three basic types of Bingo Event Tickets or Ball Games: 1) Single Ball – often called last ball called tickets, 2) Dab or Coverall Ball games and 3) Derby or Race Games. Each of these games contains instant winners for the playback action and "HOLD" tickets for the “Event” Prize or Ball Game.

Fast Action Quick Shot is a game where numbers are pre-drawn and players purchase sealed bingo cards which are then matched against the pre-drawn numbers. If a specified pattern is achieved, then the player usually wins a prize according to a prize table. Some versions are played until a player achieves a top level prize and then new numbers are drawn and the game begins anew. This type of bingo may be played over days, weeks or months depending on the difficulty of achieving a top level prize. For more information about these new games and much more, contact the Fort McDowell Bingo Hall in person, online at FortMcDowellCasino.com, or by phone at 1.800.THE.FORT. $

SAMI’S SMACKDOWN By Sami Becker

STOP SAVING MACHINES FOREVER! Read Sami’s Advice For The Rant Printed In The Previous March Issue

T

hanks for the rant Dennis! Take comfort in knowing you are not alone in feeling upset about “saved” machines which sit idle for long periods of time. Most casinos have “house rules” posted near an entrance, on slot machines, or available at the cashier and player’s club. These “house rules” tend to spell out how many machines a patron is allowed to occupy. Some go as far as highlighting a procedure for how a slot is to be “saved” in the event a patron needs to use the restroom, change a ticket, etc. Generally the procedure involves a casino employee “saving” the machine for you until you return. Just don’t forget to tip the employee when you receive excellent customer service (casino security employees generally are not allowed to accept tips)! In the future when you encounter blatant abuse of “saving” a slot as you’ve described, do something about it because you can! As you rightfully point out, the casino would prefer someone who wants to play a slot to actually play

42 Arizona Gaming Guide | April 2017 | azgamingguide.com

and not be prevented by another patron from doing so. My advice would be to point such situations out to a nearby slot attendant or security officer. Typically, these employees are trained to handle these types of occurrences at a casino. For those “savers” out there among our readers, please be courteous of others! Get a slot attendant or security officer to “save” your slot for you while you run your quick errand. By “saving” your game using an employee you may disappoint another patron, but you won’t upset them! Thanks for understanding and good luck! $

FUN FACTS By Lana Hartmann

EASTER’S NEW CLOTHES BRING LUCK Don’t Forget To Wear Some New Clothes This Month!

M

any of you may recall the tradition of wearing new clothes for Easter, but did you know those new clothes may actually ward off bad luck and bring you good fortune? As far back as the 15th Century, historians have found a proverb from Poor Robin’s Almanac referencing new clothes for Easter and their impact on a person’s future. "At Easter let your clothes be new; Or else for sure you will it rue." One hundred years later during the 16th Century in the reign of the Tudors, the belief “evolved” into a more specific curse unless strictly adhered to. If a person did not wear new clothes for Easter, their old clothes would be eaten by moths and evil crows would nest around their home! Currently, the New York Easter Parade, which dates back to the 1870s, is a tradition where women wear their newest and most fashionable clothing. Wealthier New Yorkers would emerge

from worshipping at a church on Easter Sunday in their new clothes and the less wealthy residents would stand on the streets to watch them. This tradition is probably a precursor to New York Fashion Week. Retailers of clothing recognized an opportunity in the event and began using the tradition as a way to promote and sell their goods. By the early 1900s, the New York Easter Parade was as important as Christmas to retailers if you can believe that! $
