PLAYERS TALK

This reader letter actually came in to Sami’s email (Samantha Becker who runs Sami’s Smackdown for us) and the editorial team thought highlighting this rant in Players Talk would be more appropriate. Q: Why are we video poker players treated with NO RESPECT? First, most of the video poker (VP) machines are also keno machines! Have you ever sat alongside someone that’s playing keno while you're trying to concentrate on a poker hand? Bonk!...Bonk!...Bonk!....Bonk!...Bonk!... 15 more times [is what you listen to]. I'm playing a 50¢ or $1.00 [denomination game], which is $2.50 to $5.00 a hand and the keno player is playing just a nickel or a quarter [bet per hand]. Bonk!...Bonk!...Bonk! Secondly, why do VP Players have to put at risk twice, sometimes three times, the money as slot players for points on their rewards cards? I know about the return percentages, but the machines are in the casino and shouldn't all machines be equal? Ten dollars a point, sometimes twenty dollars a point and slot players bet five dollars a point. My favorite is, some VP machines are $10.00 a point and the next row over the VP machines are $20.00 a point (same game). Shouldn't the casinos tell people of the difference? If the casinos don't like VP players, just remove the games and make them just keno! Bonk!...Bonk!...Bonk! NO RESPECT! Lastly, why are most of the VP machines OLD? Don't these game manufactures have new machines? They sure keep developing new stuff for the slot players! Except for the multiline machines, most of the VP machines seem old and with worn out buttons! NO RESPECT! Oh, I almost forgot. What about the odds on VP consistently getting worse? 9/5, 8/6, 8/5, 7/5, and so on [editor’s note: the reader is referring to the full house and flush payouts at minimum bet]. Have the odds on slot machines gotten worse? I read all the articles and I never see any mention of the odds getting worse, just MORE lines to play. [I’m] wondering what your thoughts are on us VP players getting NO RESPECT? Hugh Monthie – Goodyear, AZ A: Hugh, we totally commiserate with your experience as a video poker player. We understand how the video poker player can feel marginalized at a casino for the reasons you mention. Your best option is to take your issues to the casino Player’s Club, or fill out a comment card. In our many years of experience in the casino gaming industry, we have found communicating your desires directly to an employee, preferably one with

PLAYERS TALK

Continued from page 6

some influence like a manager or supervisor, generally produces one of three outcomes. The first outcome may result in an understanding employee who then works to satisfy the patron. The second outcome may result in an understanding employee who provides a sufficient explanation of casino policy, but doesn’t necessarily address the patron’s concerns. The third, and least desirable outcome, is when a patron presents the issue to casino staff and is just completely dismissed or ignored. Don’t worry, we see and hear all three outcomes on casino floors all the time. As a patron, you then have to decide if you can live with the outcome or whether you should take your business elsewhere. Your first comment about video poker games and keno games being part of the same game package is a perfectly logical point. Why would the manufacturers have placed video poker and keno together on the same game? Unfortunately, the answer is one of cost and being able to offer a customer (the casino) the most product for their money. Back in the day, slot machines had little memory and computer processing power. Video poker and video keno do not require a lot of memory or processing power to display on screen. I think you’ll agree the sounds and animations are limited, as they should be, considering the type of game and the type of player who enjoys those games. In order to offer casinos the opportunity to present more than one video poker game per unit, manufacturers began cramming as many games as they could get into their video poker products. This included keno and other simple slot machine games. Currently, this practice has not changed. So us video poker players get to experience the sounds of keno while we play. The only way around this is to speak up and say something. Casinos are willing to turn down the sound in order to make players happy. Of course, they are also happy to turn the volume up upon request as well! Our personal pet peeve is listening to the attract mode (that’s when there are no credits on the game and a player is not touching the screen or any buttons) of the new version of Caveman Keno. We can’t stand that annoying screech! Ugh! Someone should do something about that awful noise. In our opinion, that screech is the best example of how to make a terrible design decision. (Hint: touch any other keno game or VP game on the screen to stop the awful screeching noise!)

To answer your second point, not all games in the casino are equal. They never will be and they shouldn’t be! Why? The answer lies with the long run average return to the players. Three Card Poker, a table game, can make the casino up to 30% of all wagers placed on the game. Across $1,000,000 wagered, the casino takes in $300,000. For penny video slots, the house edge is at least 8% and can run as high as 14%. Across $1,000,000 wagered, the casino takes $80,000 to $140,000. For video poker, the house edge can be 0% or up to 5%, perhaps 10% with really poorly informed players. Assuming a house edge of 5%, the take is $50,000 across $1,000,000 wagered. If you were the casino, where would you focus your attention? Especially if the majority of your customers want to play penny video slots? The casino is a business after all. To your third point about the age of the games, tell someone if things are broken. If it isn't fixed in a reasonable amount of time, ask why. Of course, new games are available from manufacturers, but again you have to follow the money. If a video poker (and video keno) game makes $50,000 for $1,000,000 wagered, but a slot makes almost three times that in the same amount, if you were a casino manager, where would you send your slot techs to fix things? And finally, to your comment about the video poker pay tables getting worse and worse. Ultimately this is also just about the money (unfortunately for us VP players). The manufacturers offer various pay tables to the casinos and the casinos are choosing the ones with the lowest paybacks. If we were slot directors, we’d probably try to squeeze as much money out of those games as we could too until we noticed a backlash from our customer base. The casino’s dilemma is they can't go too low, because then they’ll alienate their players. If they go too high with the payback percentage, the house edge starts to become close to zero and then they don’t make a lot of money on the games. However, some casinos in dense population areas know their video poker games will be played regardless, so they choose to make them as tight as possible in order to make the most money. Have the courage to speak up and you’ll get respect, or you can always move on to another casino if you aren’t getting the respect you deserve as a customer! Thanks for a great question! $

WINNING WAYS By Mark Novak

PLAY THIS BET & WIN … EVERY TIME Expert Slot Designers Reveal The Science Of Playing Slots—Part IV

S

ince the February 2017 issue of the Arizona Gam ing Guide, we have introduced a series of articles in our Winning Ways section. To read the previous issues, head over to our website’s Back Issues page available at azgamingguide.com! We know our readers are ready for this month’s installment of “The Science of Playing Slots” in which we examine what bet to play in order to win! This topic is probably the most controversial, the most difficult to explain, and even harder to grasp especially when you, the casino patron, is in the middle of the casino floor swept up in the excitement of playing a slot machine. The first rule is to always bet with your head and never over your head, and never drink and bet (let’s just say don’t bet impaired). Bad things can and will happen! After you’ve regained control over your betting, let’s take a look at how much you should bet... If your game of choice is a video slot, always select a wager which covers all of the possible ways to win. That is, if you are playing a 30 pay line game, wager 30 credits! If the game has 20 pay lines and offers an additional 15 credit bonus bet, wager the 35 credits! If the game offers 1024 ways to win for 50 credits, wager 50 credits! If the game offers a jackpot at max bet, play max bet! Insert the specifics of your favorite game into my repetitious sentence and I’m sure you’ll get the idea. If you are unwilling to follow this advice, my advice to you is find another game. Play a lower denomination, like nickels, two cents, or pennies. Play a lower pay line game. Don’t play a game which expects you to cough up extra credits beyond the number of pay lines. If the game feels uncomfortable to you because you can’t or won’t wager the minimum, walk away. You’ll never win and you'll never be happy. What about reel slots? The same rules apply; cover all the lines, make the bonus wagers, play max bet if the game offers pays only at max bet. If you can’t bet this way, then lower the denomination or walk away! Video poker? Don’t get me started! Bet max, bet max, bet max! If you can’t, or won’t bet max, don’t play! Ok, so now that you understand the basics, let me let you in on

16 Arizona Gaming Guide | May 2017 | azgamingguide.com

my secret strategy I use in order to win. What I implement is probably best explained by examining a case study of how I play the original Buff alo slot by Aristocrat. I love Buff alo and if you don’t, you should too. This game is so simple to understand and play it’s ridiculous. The wins that are available to players during the bonus are fantastic, plus, they are relatively frequent. That is, the odds of them happening are not astronomical. For those of you familiar with Buff alo, you’ll recall the game expects a 40 credit wager in order to cover all of the ways to win. Playing less than 40 credits locks out access to all the winning combinations on the reels by darkening certain reel positions the lower you bet. Don’t bet less than 40! Should you bet more? That depends on you. All the pays on Buffalo are proportional and there is no advantage to playing max bet. Therefore, I always start with a wager of twice the minimum bet. So, I’ll start with an 80 credit wager and I never, yes you read that right, never change my bet to 40 once I start playing 80. If you switch your bet down, you will walk away a loser. In order to win, I know I’ll need at least 100 spins on Buffalo, so I know I need to walk up with at least $80 if I’m playing 100 spins at 80 credits on a penny game. So I always risk $100 on Buffalo. If I don’t have the $100, I don’t play. For those of you who wish to play 40 credits on Buff alo, risk at least $50. If you can’t or won’t, don’t play. If you want to play 200 credits, risk at least $250, otherwise don’t play. Once I begin playing, I’m looking for the bonus. I need to get that bonus before my bankroll runs out. If I can’t hit the bonus, I’ll probably walk away with $0. If I can hit the bonus, well the sky’s the limit. If the bonus pays me a big win (as it frequently does!) then I’m willing to risk my winnings. Perhaps the bonus won’t pay much and I’ll walk away with $0 and having had fun experiencing the thrill of Buff alo. The secret lies in walking up to your game willing to risk the correct bankroll for the wager, wagering correctly, not changing your bet, and sticking to your guns—win or lose! Look, let’s be realistic. You won’t win all the time, but you can set yourself up for success with a simple strategy. And, by the way, once I’m up, I’ll increase my wager, but I’ll never decrease it! $

ARIZONA BLACKJACK SIDE BETS Make The Side Bet Or Avoid At All Costs? Well, It Depends.

A

side bet is a wager that is both optional and completely separate from your regular blackjack bet. It can add excitement to your gambling and will occasionally grace you with a nice payout like a slot machine does. And, casinos love side bets, which are sometimes called bonus bets, although the bonus usually goes to the house. Let me explain. Blackjack players who learn and use Basic Strategy are likely to do well at 21, perhaps playing to a house edge of less than 1% in Arizona casinos. Side bets usually have a higher house edge, meaning it costs the player a lot more to make those bets. How much more? Well, a great side bet has a house edge of about 2.5% and a terrible side bet has a house edge of about 38%. Yes, you read that right. It’s like playing the lottery. Unfortunately, hitting a progressive or the top payout on some side bets is almost as hard to do as hitting the lottery! So, play smart and limit your side bets and you’ll find that going home a winner happens more often, even if you learn a new option and give it a whirl. The New In BETween A side bet now found at Gila River Casinos is the all-new In BETween. If you remember playing the old game of In-Between or Red Dog, you know that the object is to be dealt a card numbered between your own pair of cards. In BETween is very similar, but it is an optional bet that has nothing to do with your final blackjack hand. It has everything to do with your starting two cards. Using the numerical rank order of 2 through 10 and Jack, Queen, King, Ace, the In BETween wager wins if the dealer’s up card lands between your first two card values. Sound complicated? It’s not. Suppose you are dealt a 6 and a Jack. If the dealer’s card fits the spread, meaning it is a 7, 8, 9 or 10, you win. If the dealer’s up card is a 2, 3, 4, 5 or Queen, King, Ace, the wager loses. The tighter the spread, the higher the payoff. The house edge is about 5.4%. Card Spreads and Payoffs One-card pays 10 to 1 Two-card pays 6 to 1 Three-card pays 4 to 1

18 Arizona Gaming Guide | May 2017 | azgamingguide.com

Any other winning spread pays 1 to 1 Triple Match pays 30 to 1 A Triple Match occurs when the player’s two cards and the dealer’s up card all match. Other Popular Side Bets in Arizona Casinos Push Your Luck—You win if your final hand of 17 to 21 ties with the dealer. House edge is about 6% for most pay tables. Buster Blackjack—You win if the dealer busts. The more cards it takes, the more you win. House edge is about 6.2% for most pay tables. Lucky Ladies—Any two-card 20 wins. Two Queen of Hearts pays the most when the dealer also has a blackjack. House edge is about 24.5% for most pay tables. Lucky Lucky—Any two-card hand of 19, 20, 21 wins, plus suited 21, 6-7-8 and 7-7-7 pay even more. House edge of about 2.62% for most pay tables. Deuces Wild—Win every time you start with a deuce as one of your first two cards. $

DIA DE LOS MUERTOS SCRATCHERS Arizona Lottery Selects Images By Local Arizona Artist Emily Costello

I

n February, the Arizona Lottery stated its dedication and support to the local Hispanic and arts communities by holding an open artwork submission for a “Dia de los Muertos” Scratchers ticket in celebration of this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month. The ticket highlights a talented, local Arizona artist while commemorating the traditions and festivities of Hispanic Heritage Month. The Arizona Lottery received dozens of original and inspiring submissions, and after careful consideration by a seasoned panel of judges, local Arizona artist Emily Costello was selected. Emily submitted two original artworks of vivid imagery that captured the cultural aspects of Dia de los Muertos. “We are thrilled to engage with our community, and in this case, the Hispanic and arts communities, in a new and exciting way,” Gregg Edgar, Executive Director for the Arizona Lottery, said. “Emily Costello’s artwork is a remarkable depiction of the traditions and festivities of Dia de los Muertos and Hispanic Heritage Month, and she is an excellent representation of the local Phoenix Hispanic and arts community.” Emily is a self-taught painter, printer and mixed media artist and her art is inspired by her Mexican heritage, its cultural icons, imagery and the events that have shaped her life. Her paintings are strongly influenced by her grandmother who encouraged her to follow her passion for creativity. FORT MCDOWELL TRIBE RECOGNIZED President Bernadine Burnette Given Tribal Gaming Visionary Award

F

ort McDowell Yavapai Nation President Bernadine Burnette was recently honored at the National Center for American Indian Enterprise (NCAIED) with their Tribal Gaming Visionary Award at the 2017 Reservation Economic Summit (RES) in Las Vegas, Nevada. The prestigious Tribal Gaming Visionary Award is presented to an individual, gaming leadership, gaming enterprise or tribal government for their efforts in promoting Native-to-Native business along with exemplary contributions to create jobs for Native people and communities. National Indian Gaming Association Chairman Ernie Stevens, Jr., who also serves on the NCAIED Board, presented the award to Burnette. He said, "President Burnette is a leader who wants to get work done efficiently and effectively, and it is always with her tribal community and Indian country in mind. The outstanding growth of the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation is a reflection of their vision of self-sufficiency for their tribal members. The Nation has developed eight enterprises that have diversified their business portfolio and extends their Native-toNative trade and employment opportunities." Burnette, who also serves as the Chairperson of the Arizona Indian Gaming Association (AIGA) and is the former Secretary of the National Indian Gaming Association, accepted the award on behalf of her community. "I humbly accept this recognition on behalf of the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation. The vision of our community comes from our ancestors, and the road we take is in the direction of our people. We are guided by our sovereignty and grounded in Yavapai traditions and culture, always striving to improve the health, well-being, and happiness of our nation." Burnette was elected President of the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation in 2016 and has served for more than two decades as a Tribal Council Member and during that time has held the positions of Secretary, Vice President, and President. In 2012, then Vice President Burnette was named "Indian Gaming Advocate of the Year" by the National Indian Gaming Association for her work to preserve gaming rights. She was selected as "Woman of the Year" by former Arizona Governor Jane Hull and honored by the Arizona Republic for her resolute leadership as one of only seven female Native American tribal Presidents in the nation in 1999.

The Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation is one of 22 tribes in the State of Arizona and has been an integral part of the economic growth and impacts state-wide. They are also in the forefront to the protection of native rights. In 1948, two Yavapai veterans of WWII sued the state of Arizona for the right to vote and won. In 1981, Fort McDowell successfully fought against the construction of a dam that would have flooded much of their reservation. In 1992, the U.S. Government seized the Yavapai Nation's gaming machines, which led to an 18-day peaceful standoff that resulted in a victory for Fort McDowell and tribal gaming across the nation. President Burnette is a pioneer who remains a powerful advocate for all of Indian Country. She will be the first to tell you she serves at the pleasure and wishes of her community, who are so deserving of this award. $

SAMI’S SMACKDOWN By Sami Becker

WANT TO WIN BIG? PLAY THESE SLOTS! Hints & Tips To Give You A Slight Advantage

M

any of the rants I receive echo the same sentiment and that is players keep increasing their bankroll while their chances of winning seem to be decreasing. The penny video slots can be extremely enjoyable however they can also be very draining on your bankroll. As volatile as these slots have become over the years, their primary purpose is to entertain. If you want to increase your chances of winning, and you want to win BIG, then you have to play the mechanical three reel stepper games in either quarter or dollar denominations. These “classic” slots are still on the casino floors for a reason! Smart gamblers continue to flock to them and jackpots of tens of thousands of dollars occur on these games every day! Here are some hints & tips to give you a slight advantage: ● Stick to the ‘tried and true’ favorites like Triple Luck y 7’s, Double Diamond, Ten Times Pay, Blazing 7’s, Triple Double Wild Cherry, Sizzling 7’s and Red White & Blue.

34 Arizona Gaming Guide | May 2017 | azgamingguide.com

● Most mechanical reel slot games produce a win about once in every 12 to 20 games. However, if you stick with Double Diamond, Blazing 7’s and Red White & Blue, you will have a win about once in every 7 spins on average! ● The jackpot on the Double Diam ond slot hits often (about 1 in every 50,000 spins on average). This translates to approximately one jackpot every three days! ● Come prepared to risk at least 300X your wager. And, make sure you have documentation on you for those large taxable hand pays! Good luck! $
