PLAYERS TALK

Q: Can you do an article on how Bingo works? I tried going to a local casino out here to get an explanation and left even more confused. I always play Video Poker but my mom wants to learn how to play Bingo and knows nothing about it. Thanks! Jason Felderman – Marana, AZ A: Bingo is a great game! There’s plenty of excitement, it offers a chance to win a lot of money for a small wager, the game takes time to play, and bingo is quite social which you can readily observe at any session. Pick your favorite casino and check their bingo session times for a game and you are all set! The game of bingo is played on a five by five grid divided into columns and rows. Each column is associated with a letter in the word bingo from left to right. Each column contains a random selection of numbers from a specific range. The leftmost, or “B,” column has five numbers from the range 1 to 15. The next column over, or “I,” has five numbers from the range 16 to 30. The center, “N,” column has four numbers from the range 31 to 45 with a fixed “Free Space” in the middle row. The “G” column, one column to the right, has five numbers from the range 46 to 60. The rightmost column, called “O,” contains five numbers from the range 61 to 75. Pictured to the right is what a modern bingo card looks like. Most casinos sell several different versions of “packs” to patrons. Generally the smallest “pack,” and therefore smallest wager, is what is referred to as a “three-on.” A player purchasing a “three-on” is buying three bingo cards per regular session game. One bingo session usually has eight to twelve regular games and up to six special games. The special games are not included in the purchase of a “three-on” and require patrons to spend more in order to participate. In any bingo hall, there is a caller who reads out the randomly drawn bingo balls one at a time. Some callers are fast, others are slow, but the interval time between balls is quite short. Each time a ball is drawn it is visible, via a small video camera, on monitors all around the hall. The caller will state the letter and

number on the ball and place it in a rack for use during the next game. Once a number is called, each bingo player must mark, or “daub,” the number (if represented) on their purchased cards using a “dauber.” Daubers are bottles filled with colored ink which pass through a tiny opening onto a sponge at the top used to make the mark on the card. The purpose of bingo is to be the first person to complete the selected visual pattern for the specific game. Some games require a “straight line” bingo, other games require all four corners to be covered, more patterns are possible like the “postage stamp” where four numbers in a square in any one of the four corners of the card must be filled in. Prior to the start of each game, the caller will describe the pattern required to win and the pattern (and any acceptable variations) is displayed on a board or screen in the hall. The patterns are also printed on the session card which describes the order of the games, when the specials occur, along with additional information. As each game is played, all the participants are hoping to become the first to complete the indicated pattern. Once a player does complete the pattern, they yell “Bingo!” in order to get the attention of the bingo staff and the game is halted. Once the bingo staff verifies a win, or multiple winners, the prize for that game is paid and play continues with the subsequent game. The games continue until the session is over. We recommend you identify yourself to a bingo hall’s staff that you are a first time player and may require some assistance throughout the session. You may be advised to sit in a particu-

Hopefully this “Intro to Bingo” article will help both your mother and you enjoy some quality time together at bingo! Good Luck! Q: When playing Double Double Bonus Video Poker and you receive two Aces and another Pair, what is the best way to play that hand? Tammy Demko – Mesa, AZ A: Tammy, Double Double Bonus Video Poker is an awesome video poker game! We’re glad you are an avid fan of the game, and of our magazine. Personally, we also enjoy playing Triple Double Bonus Video Poker but this game is quite a bit more volatile! We analyzed two different types of possible hands given your scenario in order to be as thorough as possible. All other variations will fall into either of these two categories. We also assumed we are playing the game using the pay table (listed to the right) at a max bet of five credits. Scenario One—Two Aces, a Pair, and a Jack The correct strategy is to hold the Aces. This will generate the highest return to players over time, meaning the mathematical long run, or millions of hands. Can you hold both pairs? Sure! That’s the second best strategy as it generates the second best return to players over time. However, you are worse off by “only” 12.94% in holding both the Aces and the Pair!

Aces and only the Aces. By “worse” pay table, we mean a pay table where the values for the Full House and Flush are lower than 45 and 30. Some pay tables in the casinos might have these values as low as 30 and 25. These “worse” pay tables mean your long run return to player when using optimal strategy will approach 94.66%. That is, the casino holds around 5.34% of all money wagered on the game over the long run. If you are fortunate to find a casino whose Double Double Bonus Video Poker pay table is the one we listed, then your optimal strategy return to player percentage climbs to 98.98%! This reduces the casino’s long run hold to just 1.02%. Look for this pay table in higher denominations (dollars or five dollars) as it won’t be available to you in pennies, nickels, or even quarters. Good luck! $ Royal Flush Straight Flush 4 Aces With A Kicker 4 Aces No Kicker 4 2’s, 3’s, or 4’s With A Kicker 4 2’s, 3’s, or 4’s No Kicker Four Of A Kind Full House Flush Straight Three Of A Kind Two Pair Pair Of Jacks Or Better

4,000 250 2,000 800 800 400 250 45 30 20 15 5 5

Scenario Two—Two Aces, a Pair of Kickers, and a Jack The correct strategy is to still hold the Aces. Holding both pairs is still the second best strategy. In fact, holding two Aces and discarding the pairs is the same strategy when playing Triple Double Bonus Video Poker! Even if you are playing a Double Double Bonus Video Poker game with a worse pay table, the strategy remains the same. Hold the

WINNING WAYS By Mark Novak

HOW DO I STOP MY LOSING STREAK? Expert Slot Designers Reveal The Science Of Playing Slots—Part V

S

ince the February 2017 issue of the Arizona Gam ing Guide, we have introduced a series of articles in our Winning Ways section. To read the previous issues, head over to our website’s Back Issues page available at azgamingguide.com! We know our readers are ready for this month’s installment of “The Science of Playing Slots” in which we examine how to end a losing streak! Let’s start off with a quote from Charles Swindoll in order to help answer this question and set the tone for the rest of the article. The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill. It will make or break a company ... a church ... a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude ... I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me, and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you ... we are in charge of our Attitudes. Your luck, or lack thereof during a losing streak, is directly dependent on your attitude. If you doubt this, you may need to keep a more open mind as modern science is beginning to crack the surface of what many once considered to be myth. Your thoughts and emotions influence your life in ways which are not fully understood but science can actually measure. So, let’s look at the basic statement in Charles Swindoll’s message: your attitude is the one thing you can control. If you are on a losing streak, the worst thing to do is to recreate the horrors of the streak in your mind and turn into a Debbie Downer. Whining about your misfortune to your friends, fellow casino players, casino employees, etc. only makes it worse! Is it OK to vent? Of course! Get the negativity out as quickly as you can and move on with a changed attitude! Let me give you an example of how I created and then defeated a recent losing streak just with the power of my attitude. I never like receiving money as a gift from anyone prior to a casino trip where the intent of the money is to supplement my

16 Arizona Gaming Guide | June 2017 | azgamingguide.com

bankroll. I can’t explain why, but this money is now cursed for me. I think if I lit the money on fire it would burn longer than the length of time it takes for me to play the money through a slot machine. Go figure! So I begrudgingly accepted the gift and, as the presenter intended, I made it a part of my bankroll. Needless to say, I won a total of $70 off the $300 given to me. I was not able to play for very long, I barely made any points on my player’s club card and was absolutely down about what had happened yet again. I spent the rest of my evening relaxing and having fun in the casino not playing. That’s right, not playing! I willed my losing streak to stop. I felt strongly that if I continued to play, after the first miserable experience, it would only continue. So I stopped! The next morning, my losing streak was forgotten. My attitude was positive, I was looking forward to playing an old favorite progressive slot of mine (Life of Luxury Progressives: Riches Of Rome and Far East Fortunes by WMS) with some free play the player’s club offered me. I turned $110 of free play into a $160 win, a $200 free games bonus, and then a $240 progressive win. I played for quite some time, made a ton of points on my player’s club card, had a great experience and cashed out $500 as a bankroll for the next day. I played with the $500 across two additional days and walked out with $200 in my pocket! Had I continued to be negative, I’m certain I would have remained a loser. The secret lies in changing your attitude, which you are in control of. The slot machine doesn't control your attitude, neither does the casino. You alone are in charge of your attitude. And, if that attitude of yours is bad, you’ll lose, guaranteed. On the flip side, a good attitude opens up the possibility for winning streaks. Does it guarantee a winning streak? No! A slot machine is still governed by random behavior. A slot is designed to make a casino money over the long run. We, all of us casino visitors, know we are paying for entertainment and the chance at winning, but ultimately we are playing a losing game. Your attitude will always beat the house edge. Your attitude is in charge of how you feel, not someone or something else. Use your attitude as your primary weapon in a casino. Use your attitude as a shield. Above all, have a good attitude all the time. Everything, including those losing streaks, become subject to your attitude. $

TABLE GAMES By Al Moe

HOW TO PLAY CAJUN STUD Play Poker With Two Dealt Cards & Three Community Cards!

Y

ou don’t have to be a Ragin’ Cajun to play new table games in Arizona; you just need to know the rules! So, imagine you’ve already taken a lap around the casino. You’ve fed the slots and prayed to the Keno Board. You round the final turn towards the table games, and there it is—a new poker game. The layout is vaguely familiar; the dealer offers a beguiling smile. You hand over cash for chips without even thinking. Sound familiar? They might be smiling because at Cajun Stud , by Galaxy Gaming, you aren’t playing against the dealer. It’s just you and the other players trying to make a winning combination, high or low! Check the layout for the pay tables, and you’re good to go. Now you just have to take a seat, watch the dealer shuffle, and make a wager in the now-familiar Ante circle. You can play with just the one bet, but that’s old school. Try a side bet, and you’ll have more chances to win. The object of the game is to achieve a poker hand that matches a pay table. Other wagers include the optional Pocket Bonus, Board Bonus, Lo-Ball, and Five Card Jackpot wager. Once you bet, the dealer will give you two cards, and you’ll have to make a Raise wager of 1x, 2x, or 3x your original Ante wager, or fold. Don’t worry; your side bets will stay in action if you decide to fold away your Ante wager. Community Cards and Raises The dealer will reveal the first community card and offer you a chance to make an additional raise of 1x, 2x, or 3x your original Ante wager. This means you’ve got to bet more money or fold, forfeiting your Ante wager and 1st raise. Next, a second community card gets revealed, and the process is repeated. You must raise 1x, 2x, or 3x your Ante wager or fold before the dealer reveals the final community card. Now you’ll use your starting cards and the three community cards to make a five-card poker hand. You need a pair of jacks or better to win at least even-money. Check the pay table for payoffs. The better the hand, the higher the payoff. A pair of 6’s through 10’s earn a push. Lower pairs and no-pair hands lose. Pocket Bonus If you wagered in the Pocket Bonus spot, your bet is on your

18 Arizona Gaming Guide | June 2017 | azgamingguide.com

two-card starting hand. You’ll need a pair to win 5 to 1, or an ace and a face card to win 10-1 or more. Board Bonus If you placed a wager in the Board Bonus spot, you are wagering on the three community cards. You’ll need at least a pair to win even-money. No pair, no money. Higher hands pay better, up to 50-1 for a three-card royal flush. Lo-Ball Bonus The Lo-Ball side bet pays when you make a no-pair, no-straight, no-flush hand with your highest card, a jack or lower. A queen or higher is a losing hand. Payoffs are as high as 100 to 1 for a 7high hand of 7, 6, 5, 4, 2. Five Card Jackpot Bonus A wager on the Five Card Jackpot Bonus wins if a player makes at least three-of-a-kind. A royal flush pays the progressive jackpot. $ Writer Al Moe has worked in the casino industry for many years. He has lived and worked in Las Vegas, Reno, and Lake Tahoe. He also attended the University of Nevada, Reno. He is an avid writer and blogger, author of “Vegas and the Mob"—available at Amazon. He is also the proud father of four beautiful girls.

Konami’s Slots At NIGA New Themes + New Math = Great Slots

T

his year’s National Indian Gaming Association’s 2017 Tradeshow & Convention featured a complete array of Konami Gaming, Inc.’s latest game developments for its proven Concerto Collection of video slots. The company’s top premium, progressive, and base game options arrived to San Diego for more than 6,000 casino executives and tribal leaders to see and explore first-hand. Among Konami’s top highlights included Castlevania themed slots; all-new progressive game series such as Cai Lai Si Ji and Sm ash Sm ash Festival; custom single screen releases Dragon Fury and Pharaoh’s Fury. Cai Lai Si Ji (Stand Alone Progressive) Cai Lai Si Ji was among the showcase progressive games of NIGA 2017. This 4-level standalone progressive bonus combines with a unique collection of custom base games including Wealth of Dynasty, Winning Animals, and Power of Riches—each with very brilliant Asian-style art elements. Smash Smash Festival (Local Area Progressive) Bursting with fun fiesta flare and colorful celebration, Sm ash Smash Festival is Konami’s first original KP3+ linked jackpot bo-

nus. Instead of traditional metering progressive prizes, this linked game progresses the number of available prizes in the jackpot pool with each mystery-trigger selection until a player is awarded the Smash Time bonus to redeem all prizes in the central pot. All jackpot amounts are fixed, and odds of achieving the mystery trigger increase with higher extra bet levels. Dragon Fury & Pharaoh’s Fury Dragon Fury is among the original new debut theme that Konami showcased on Concerto Crescent and Concerto Stack during NIGA. This KP3+ platform game is a MultipleLines 7-8-8-8-7 title with a unique bonus that dramatically increases the number of high-value dragon symbols across the reel sets during the free games according to the number of trigger free game sym-

Castlevania bols, up to 241 dragon symbols for 6 trigger symbols. Pharaoh’s Fury also has an available progressive bonus option and carries a free game feature with bursts of extra wilds across the reel sets according to the number of trigger symbols. Additional free games can be won during the feature, and tally below the reels for redemption after the first set of free games is completed.

NIGA CHAIRMAN RECEIVES AWARD Ernie Stevens, Jr. Honored With Charlie Hill Spirit Award

T

he family of the late Charlie Hill honored the Chairman of the National Indian Gaming Association (NIGA), Ernie Stevens, Jr. with the Charlie Hill Spirit Award at the Indian Gaming 2017 Tradeshow and Convention which was held in San Diego, April 10 - 13, 2017. The Charlie Hill Spirit Award, established by NIGA and the family members of the late Native American Comedian four years ago, recognizes the positive impacts by an individual to Indian communities. The award is termed a "spirit" award and is in honor of the outstanding work and commitment to furthering the quality of life of Indian people, which was one of the late comedian's greatest passions. As a stand-up comedian Mr. Hill's quick wit, humor, and Native wisdom touched spirits and is a reminder that changing the world happens one laugh at a time. NIGA Chairman Ernie Stevens, Jr. said, "I am truly honored to be recognized by Charlie's family. He had such a real passion for life and presented that passion through his greatest skill of making people laugh." Stevens continued, "Charlie and I were always at each other. He knew so much about the world around us especially as it relates to sports and politics. Initially, I was surprised at his knowledge; later I looked forward to our exchanges. While most of it was teasing and scrutiny, I always learned and/or was pressed to do my research just to be sure he wasn't tricking or misleading me. I really miss those lengthy verbal sparring matches. It is my privilege to receive this award in Charlie's memory." As Chairman of NIGA, Stevens has for sixteen years served as the national spokesman for the Indian gaming industry. In this role, he has worked to educate Congress, the media, and the public about the positive impacts of Indian gaming on tribal and nearby communities. Stevens is also responsible for shaping policy initiatives that have the potential to impact the industry. He has testified before Congress on a number of topics from Internet gaming to proposed amendments to the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. In addition to his role as spokesman, Stevens has worked to build consensus among NIGA's diverse 184 Member Tribes, and is often quoted as saying, "Our membership is our strength, and we are strongest when our voice is unified." He has also succeeded in building strong coalitions with other Indian and non-Indian organizations to help strengthen the

industry. In the face of constant challenges, while Stevens has served as Chairman, NIGA has consistently defended any movement in Washington, DC against the Principles of Tribal Sovereignty. Stevens has led NIGA and worked to protect tribal sovereignty and strengthen the Indian gaming industry. Hill, who was a member of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin, moved on to the Spirit World on December 30, 2013, after a long battle with lymphoma. He was an internationally renowned stand-up comedian, actor, and writer. Hill’s prestigious entertainment career included movies such as the Reel Injun and The Big Show. He also made his TV debut on The Richard Pryor Show in the 1970s and has been on Late Night w ith David Letterman and The Tonight Show . Charlie Hill and his wife Lenora have four children: daughter, Dine' Nizhoni; daughter, Nasbah; daughter, Nanabah; and son, Nabahe. Since the creation of the Charlie Hill Spirit Award, NIGA and the family have recognized other notable leaders such as the late Floyd Westerman through his son Richard Tall Bear Westerman, Keith Secola and Buffy Saint Marie. $

Tribal Gaming Revenues Surpass Commercial Gaming For The First Time New Report Claims A recent Nathan Associates, Inc. Indian Gaming Industry Report written by Alan Meister, PhD created for Casino City Press, claims Tribal Gaming Revenues are greater than Commercial Gaming revenues as of 2015. Meister broke down casino gaming revenue into three categories: Tribal, Commercial, and Racetrack Casinos. Tribal Gaming Revenues are estimated at $30.5 billion, Commercial Gaming Revenue is reported at $29.8 billion, and the Racetracks are accounting for $8.5 billion. As most tribes are not required to report their revenues in a public manner, as all commercial casinos must, the report relies on data obtained directly from tribes at a state level and also through a variety of means including the use of modeling and the incorporation of population data in addition to other

economic factors. The report claims Tribal Gaming, as a whole, showed significant signs of growth in 2015 and will face challenges to that growth in the years to come. $

SAMI’S SMACKDOWN By Sami Becker

PETS IN CASINOS—YES OR NO? When Unrestrained And/Or Untrained Animals Become A Liability

D

uring a recent casino outing, I was not having much luck and encountered a serious situation which made me cash out and leave the floor. As a result of the incident I witnessed, I probably won’t be back to that casino either! A bulldog with “service animal” (yes, the quotes are intentional here) markings was being led by an older man down a walkway in the center of the casino I was visiting in the evening. The dog was freed from the man’s control as the leash slipped from his hand. The dog began barking and charged a woman sitting next to me. Once the dog approached the woman it proceeded to bite and scratch her leg, drawing a lot of blood. As the screaming by the dog’s owner, the woman being mauled by the dog and the husband of the attacked woman began, security rushed in. That’s when I decided to hit cash out and leave!

34 Arizona Gaming Guide | June 2017 | azgamingguide.com

I took it as a sign to not play anymore. I was losing and felt this was the last straw. Now in what world does a “service animal” start barking, charge, and then proceed to maul a human? I guess the dog didn’t like the woman's six inch heels, revealing skirt and clothes, or her attitude? In any event, I question the validity of most of the “service animals” I see in casinos. I think they are just untrained pets with convenient equipment. I’m no dummy, I know what can be bought on Ebay and Amazon. But what do you think? True service animals aside, should pets be allowed in casinos? Do you have any horror stories? Write me! $

Do YOU have a RANT OR RAVE? If so, write me at: sami@azgamingguide.com or by mail at: “Sami” Arizona Gaming Guide PO BOX 20636 Mesa, AZ 85277. If I pick your topic for publication in a future issue, you’ll get a $25 gift card!
