SEPTEMBER’S SLOTS So Many To Play...So Little Time...

W

e received a lot of feedback about the Craps article on page 16 of the August 2017 issue. A big “Thank You!” to all our readers for the overwhelming interest in this classic casino game. However, we feel it is important for us to stress that live craps is not currently allowed in Arizona under any Tribal-State Gaming Compact. If a Gaming Compact changes in the future, we will be the first to let you know. To be clear, you can play craps at many casinos around Arizona on an electronic table game. Just ask any casino employee! Ok, now I’m ready to play some new slots! As the temperature cools off outside, I’m looking for all the new slots mentioned in this issue to heat things up again! Thanks to our readers for always providing us with feedback about our magazine. We appreciate you and are grateful for your loyalty. Please don’t hesitate to reach out and let us know what you think and keep all of your questions rolling in. We get a lot of them, both handwritten and emailed, so it may take a while to get back to all of you, but we do love reading them, and responding. And, while we select some for publication by committee, we are working on being able to share all of them with all of you! Stay tuned! Please visit our Facebook at: facebook.com/ ArizonaGamingGuide, become part of our community and share your thoughts and experiences with others who also love the same casino games you do. You can sign up for our e-newsletter and find current and back issues of the Arizona Gaming Guide on our website at AZGamingGuide.com. Let me know what you think of this issue and have fun! Thank You!

PLAYERS TALK

Across the years, we’ve answered thousands of questions from casino gaming enthusiasts all over the state of Arizona. Here are some of the most common issues players want to know about with the answers given by Mr. Bill Ragatz (BR), Gaming Device Manager at the Arizona Department of Gaming. So, if you didn’t believe us … Does it matter if I pull the handle or I press the button? BR: The handle you pull and the button you press to initiate a spin activate the same switch on the game. There are no gears or levers or springs which control the outcome of a spin anymore on mechanical reel slot games. Even the classic slot games with the sevens and bars are run off of a computer and a random number generator too, and they actually have been for decades. Even stopping the reels by pressing the spin button has no effect on the outcome of the game. If someone hit a jackpot on a machine, is it a good idea not to play that machine for a while? BR: The slot doesn’t remember what happened from one spin to the next. Each spin is totally independent of the spin before and completely random. There is no sequence to a slot machine. You have just as much of a chance of hitting the exact same jackpot moments after someone else hit that very same jackpot on the same machine. Additionally, it’s also not correct to believe that a machine is “due” because it hasn’t hit a jackpot for a while. Say I’ve been playing a machine for an hour and I get up and leave then a guy sits down after me and hits a big win, would that have happened to me? BR: There’s no guarantee that both you and the person playing after you would have hit the spin button at the exact same millisecond. As soon as you hit the button, that’s when the random numbers are picked by the computer program and a result is determined. One time my mom visited a casino and somebody won a huge amount of money after she got up and left her slot. I kept telling her it had nothing to do with her leaving and that it probably wouldn’t have happened to her, but it still hurts her to this day! If the progressive is not awarded and the game is taken off the slot floor, what happens to all the money? BR: Any player contribution towards a progressive has to be returned to the players in some way. If a slot machine manufacturer were to put an entire wide area network out of business, they wouldn’t be able to! They’d have to keep at least one machine running until the jackpot was hit. Then they could shut down the machine and remove it. But, if the network changes to a new group of games, the money rolls over from the old games to the new games. Even if it isn’t a wide-area jackpot hosted by

a slot manufacturer, the casino still has to distribute in-house progressives onto other progressive games in the casino. That’s part of the Arizona Tribal State Gaming Compact. Do slots that require skill, like video poker, pay more than slots that don’t? BR: Based on my knowledge, video poker has a high payback percentage because the game is designed that way. Generally, these games are set to higher denominations and are better games than other slots. I recall seeing video poker games paying back 99% or more, in the long run, if the player uses their skill correctly. In my opinion, if a player wishes to play a video slot machine they are better off playing video poker. Do casinos put higher paying machines in busy traffic areas like near the cage or near the doors? BR: Personally, I don’t think so. There are possibly a few casino executives who believe in that idea, but most do not. I’m not a slot manager but I would think the placement of the slot depends more on the game and the denomination. I used to hear a theory that the slot machines on the aisles had lower payback percentages than the slots in the middle of the row because people like to sit at the end of a row first before they move into the crowded part of a bank of slots. I don’t think there is anything to that theory. You could argue the exact opposite that “loose” machines at the ends would attract players to the “tight” machines in the middle. I do know there are players out there who prefer to play on the end of a row because they don’t like feeling crowded. I guess that’s where those theories come from. In all the certifications I’ve participated in, if a slot was set “loose” the whole bank was set to the same payback percentage. I can’t recall a single situation where the casino was selective about the payback percentage down a row of slots. Do casinos have the power to control which games are going to pay out, how much they’re going to pay out and when? BR: I’ll admit that when I wasn’t in the business I probably had just as much suspicion as anybody else! After working around slot machines as a slot tech and then with my experience here at the Department, I’m 100% convinced every spin on a slot machine is 100% random. I’ve seen the technical specifications and I know how the games communicate. The only electronic information going in or out of a slot is data on credits wagered, credits put into the game, credits cashed out, and the player tracking data. There is no communication coming into a slot telling the game to do something regarding winning or losing. I know there are some people out there that believe there are casino employees sitting in the back room making them win or lose! But, if you know the technology and the regulation of the games, you know that’s absolutely impossible! $

TAKING ADVANTAGE OF GOOD ODDS How Advantage Play In Blackjack Changes The House’s Edge

A

rizona casinos offer a very good game of Blackjack with generous player options. Unlike static games such as Keno that have the same house advantage every game, the odds of Blackjack change based on the cards removed from play each hand. That’s the beauty of advantage play. Card counting is dependent on using a point-system assigned to each card to ascertain when the mathematical edge improves to where the player has the edge over the house. When the player has the edge, they bet more money per hand or increase to multiple hands. Pretty simple. Unfortunately, learning to count cards is a big task. Just learning Basic Strategy is a stretch for many players, and most of us just want to have fun. Still, wouldn’t it make sense to learn just a little bit more if you could increase your odds of winning? To start with keep in mind that the first hand of a new shoe has excellent player odds, better than 75% of the hands you’ll see later. So, don’t be afraid to bet more on the first hand. And, you don’t have to spend hours to learn a new system of play to improve your odds. Just remember that extra aces in the deck mean more chances to get a Blackjack and be paid 3 to 2 on your wager. That’s the good stuff. Embracing Continuous Shufflers At Blackjack Many players dislike continuous shufflers because they think the dealer makes more good hands. That’s an illusion, fueled by the fact that on a standard shoe game there will be times when the remaining cards are mostly 10’s and the dealer will bust many times, which is great. Of course, logic demands that the opposite must also happen when the dealer makes lots of hands because there are many small cards remaining. Those streaks are less noticeable on a continuous shuffle machine, where by definition the cards are constantly shuffled and available to be drawn at any time. And, the house edge on a continuous shuffler is about 0.2% smaller than on a standard game with cards coming out of a shoe. That being said, if a dealer forgets to add the cards from the last hand to the machine or you are playing on a continuous shuffler like the one2six by Shuffle Master that sorts used cards into

16 Arizona Gaming Guide | September 2017 | azgamingguide.com

small batches, the cards just used won’t be dealt into the next hand. Think that might make a difference? Since you’ll get a 3-to-2 payoff for a Blackjack, it’s very advantageous for you if there are many aces left in a deck of cards. And, if you are playing on a continuous shuffler and the last group of hands held no aces, that’s an advantage for you. For instance, if during the last hand there were 26 cards used, on average they would contain two aces. But what if no aces were showing? Then the cards remaining in the shuffler would be ace-rich. There is no way to know what you will get on the next hand, but we do know that you’ll get paid 3-to-2 for a Blackjack while the dealer can only get even money from you if they get a Blackjack. Your odds are better, so bet a little more and enjoy! $ Writer Al Moe has worked in the casino industry for many years. He has lived and worked in Las Vegas, Reno, and Lake Tahoe. He also attended the University of Nevada, Reno. He is an avid writer and blogger, author of “Vegas and the Mob"—available at Amazon. He is also the proud father of four beautiful girls.

BLACKJACK PROBABILITIES Simple Numbers Provide A Better Understanding Of The Game

D

id you know that the player hand of seventeen in the long run is a losing hand against every dealer "up" card except a six? To play a winning game of Blackjack it is important to play perfect basic strategy and keep your emotions out of the game. To accomplish this it is essential to have a realistic view of what to expect when playing. A player who gets mad will usually start playing hunches and gut feelings. Next they then over bet their bankroll, all with financially disastrous results. If you understand the game it will help you to make good decisions and use common sense when playing. The following chart will show you how often you can expect the dealer to "bust" given each "up" card. Dealer Up Card 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Jack, Queen, King Ace

Dealer Bust Percentage 35.30% 37.56% 40.28% 42.89% 42.08% 25.99% 23.86% 23.34% 21.43% 11.65%

It may come as a shock to most players that the dealer will make their hand more often than they will "bust" no matter what "up" card they are dealt. Players that are of the opinion that the dealer should break most of the time when showing a six or less have an unrealistic expectation of the game. When the dealer doesn't break when showing a small "up" card, you should expect it. I have seen many players who hit hard 17 against a dealer "up" card of a ten. The dealer will only have another ten in the hole once every 3 times, however you can see by the following chart that you will bust 69% or about two out of three times when hitting 17, making it a losing proposition. This chart will help you understand about how often the player will "bust" by taking a hit for each hand. Hand Value 21 20 19 18

Bust Percentage If You Hit 100% 92% 85% 77%

18 Arizona Gaming Guide | September 2017 | azgamingguide.com

17 16 15 14 13 12 11 or Less

69% 62% 58% 56% 39% 31% 0%

From this chart you can see why it is a "dumb" idea to double on hard twelve, or hit a hard seventeen. When hitting your hand of 14, 15, and 16, you can expect to bust over half of the time, so when you do accept it as part of the game, and move on to the next hand. Just remember it is unlikely you will win every hand, and accept the losses as part of the game. You will often times hear Blackjack players complain that they are getting "ugly" or "bad" cards, but actually you will get more "decision" hands than "pat" hands. The following chart will show you how often in the long run you can expect to receive each hand. Probability Of Player Hands Two Card Count Frequency Blackjack 4.8% 17-20 30.0% 2-16 38.7% No Bust 26.5% TOTAL 100.0% By knowing the probabilities in Blackjack it gives the player a better understanding of the game, and a "realistic" idea of what to expect. Many players get mad when they don't get a pat hand every time, or when the dealer doesn't bust when showing an up card of six or less. In reality this is what you should expect to happen when playing. Keep your emotions out of the game. Above all never get mad at the dealer, they are just dealing the cards! In fact, most of them are "rooting" for the player! $

The ARENA Poker Room Seniors Poker Open will happen on the heels of the poker room’s signature event, the Arizona State Poker Championship, which occurred August 11 through 15. More than 1,600 players of all skill levels competed for their share of the more than $1.6 million jackpot. The winner, Rellie Sigua, 38, from Daily City outside of San Francisco, took home $265,706, a $30,000 Rolex watch, and the 1st place trophy. Read more about the Arizona State Poker Championship on page 28. “I have no doubt that many of the players that participated in the Arizona State Championship will return for this event,” said Young. “We have a really loyal group of players that love to compete. Our goal is to continuously devise jackpots and tournaments that are a bit out of the ordinary, and I think the players that participate in the Seniors Poker Open will really enjoy competing against others in their age group.” Registration for the ARENA Poker Room Seniors Poker Open is currently underway in The ARENA Poker Room. The nonsmoking poker room is the largest in the state with nearly 50 tables. It maintains a full schedule of games and tournaments throughout the year. Gila River Hotels & Casinos Wins Prestigious Romero Award

State Sees Increased Tribal Gaming Contributions

The Romero Awards are the highest honor in casino marketing and Gila River Hotels & Casinos was victorious at this year’s conference for its direct mail campaign targeted at inactive guests. Members of the Gila River Hotels & Casinos’ Marketing Department, led by Corporate Vice President of Marketing Dominic Orozco, attended the award presentation in Las Vegas. “It was an honor and a true testament of the collaboration of our entire team,” said Dominic Orozco, Corporate Vice President of Marketing for Gila River Hotels & Casinos. “We are grateful for such an esteemed panel to recognize the incredible work and results.”

The Arizona Department of Gaming announced that after a strong fourth quarter of last fiscal year, Arizona saw another increase in statewide tribal contributions. A 4.8 percent increase over the same period last year, total contributions to the State from gaming revenue came in at over $26.2 million. “This is a positive start to the new fiscal year,” Department of Gaming Director, Dan Bergin, stated. “We are confident that this is a good sign of what’s to come.” Since Arizona’s TribalState Compacts took effect in 2003, Arizona tribes have contributed nearly $1.3 billion to the state and its cities, towns, and counties. The Compacts ensure that the state will continue to benefit from gaming revenues year after year. “Arizona schools, trauma and emergency services, wildlife conservation, and state tourism all receive supplemental funding from tribal contributions, which total approximately $100 million annually,” Bergin noted. The contributions to the Arizona Benefits Fund include: Instructional Improvement Fund/Education: $13,061,473 Trauma and Emergency Services Fund: $ 6,530,736 Arizona Department of Gaming operating costs: $ 2,358,613 Arizona Wildlife Conservation Fund: $ 1,865,925 State Tourism Fund: $ 1,865,925 Problem Gambling: $ 524,136 TOTAL for the quarter ending June 30, 2017: $26,206,808 The Arizona Department of Gaming, in partnership with Arizona’s tribes, regulates Indian gaming. Under the Arizona Tribal-State Gaming Compact, tribes with casinos contribute one to eight percent of their Class III gross gaming revenue to the state, cities, towns, and counties. $

The award-winning direct mail campaign was targeted to inactive players who had not been to the casino recently and encouraged them to come back with an offer of free bonus play. The direct mail campaign resulted in an offer redemption rate of more than 17 percent. In addition to winning the Gold Award in the Inactive Program category, Gila River Hotels & Casinos was given honorable mention for the Herschel travel bags gift program. This year’s Romero Awards boasted 120 nominees who were from companies all over the world. The judging panel consisted of four casino marketing experts who together have more than 125 years of experience and were led by John Romero, the innovative marketer of who the awards are named after. Categories are divided into large and small gaming facilities in areas such as direct mail marketing, community relations and electronic marketing. For more info, visit WinGilaRiver.com. $

Pop rock star Gary Puckett is set to perform at Desert Diamond Casinos & Entertainment’s Diamond Center on Tuesday, October 10, 2017. Tickets start at $15 and are on sale now through Star Tickets and at Desert Diamond Casino’s Rewards Center. This is a special early performance with doors opening at 2pm and the show starting at 3pm. Following the show, guests can also present their ticket stubs to receive a buy one get one free buffet meal at Desert Diamond Casino Sahuarita. In the 1960s, Gary Puckett and The Union Gap took the world by storm, earning six consecutive gold records touting hits such as Young Girl, Woman, Woman, Over You, and Lady Willpower. The singles were so well received that Young Girl was later reissued in England and—six years after its initial release—hit the No. 1 spot and achieved a Silver Record Award for the second time. The group eventually disbanded to pursue solo careers. Gary Puckett has continued to tour over the years, including being a founding member of the Happy Together Tour, playing sold out performances in more than 100 cities nationwide. Gary was also invited to tour with The Monkees on their national reunion tour. Today, he performs to standing room only crowds, doing more than 150 performances every year. Treena Parvello, Director of Public Relations and Communications for the Tohono O’odham Gaming Enterprise, said, “The 1960s are coming alive in the Diamond Center on October 10! Don’t miss out on hearing Gary Puckett perform your favorite hits live for only $15!” Desert Diamond Casinos & Entertainment has three locations in Southern Arizona (Tucson, Sahuarita, and Why) and one in the West Valley. SAMI’S SMACKDOWN By Sami Becker

COURTESY & RESPECT MATTER No, This Is Not About Customer Service! This Is About The Customers!

O

ver the years, I hope my readers have recognized by now I don’t hold much back. And, judging from the emails and letters I get, all you loyal readers (I am grateful!) agree with how I address the topics I choose to write about. By the way, so do some casino employees based on what they write to me! So, forgive me if this offends anyone, but this month, I’m going to lay into some of what I consider to be the most obnoxious, self-centered, unaware casino patrons out there! I’m talking about the “smackers” of the button panels. Look, I have to get this topic off my chest as I’ve found the best therapy is to communicate your feelings about the present moment in the present moment, so bear with me here. As a direct result of the “smackers” I bring my iPod mini (which I acquired as a gift thanks to a casino) with me every time I visit a casino. Why? To drown out the noise emanating from a “smacker’s” hands! While I love the sounds of the slots, I don’t like to listen

34 Arizona Gaming Guide | September 2017 | azgamingguide.com

to smacking buttons at full force and I’d rather listen to my tunes than the loud staccato walloping of a button panel. Unfortunately, I have to choose between ruining my hearing via an iPod, or a senseless “smacker” hammering away. My solution: I get up, cash out and let the “smacker” know how much they are bothering me and find another game elsewhere. I don’t need their angry, negative, frustrated, luck-killing energy around my positive, lucky vibe! Alas, I wish other human beings would have enough courtesy and respect for themselves and the rest of us! How do “smackers” make you feel? Write me! $

Do YOU have a RANT OR RAVE? If so, write me at: sami@azgamingguide.com or by mail at: “Sami” Arizona Gaming Guide PO BOX 20636 Mesa, AZ 85277. If I pick your topic for publication in a future issue, you’ll get a $25 gift card!
