PLAYERS TALK
Q: If I find a slot ticket at a casino is it mine? James Reinhold—Sun City West, AZ A: Slot tickets, or Cashout Vouchers, are technically “bearer instruments.” Officially, this means no records are intentionally kept as to who owns the cash represented by the voucher. Therefore, by definition, the individual (casino patron) possessing the ticket is the owner. However, once a Cashout Voucher is left in a ticket tray or dropped on the floor it legally becomes the property of the casino. This is, in fact, the case in all casinos in the United States. If you find a Cashout Voucher, call the nearest casino employee, identify that you found the ticket and state your intent to return it to its rightful owner. You should head over to the main cashier cage or security podium at the casino with the employee and begin the paperwork necessary for the casino’s “lost and found” policy. Many casinos will even return the funds to you if their investigation into who the rightful owner is doesn’t provide any leads. Absolutely do not take a found ticket and cash it in or leave the casino with it. If you do, you are technically stealing either from the casino or the original patron. As we all know, in a casino, there are a lot of cameras, employees and patrons who are all potential witnesses. Furthermore, a patron’s player’s card can be used to determine who was playing at what slot machine at any particular time. This provides casino management multiple options to uncover who was first in possession of a Cashout Voucher. The casino will always make every attempt to return the money to its rightful owner or ultimately just give it to the person who found the voucher.
out Vouchers! Finding cash at a casino carries the same responsibilities! Here are some tips for our readers when handling Cashout Vouchers at casinos! Before leaving any machine make sure to verify the amount, the date and time, the casino name and address and whether or not a validation number and a barcode appear on the Cashout Voucher. Call a casino employee over immediately if any of the information is incorrect or missing! In addition, take a look at the back side; it highlights basic information concerning the ticket (varies from casino to casino) including:
• The Cashout Voucher is a bearer instrument. • The casino is not responsible for lost/stolen tickets. • The patron is responsible for the accuracy of the
ticket and must immediately contact casino employees if they believe there is a problem. (This also means you do not leave the slot machine you cashed out at!)
• If there is a problem with a ticket it is void. • The casino is not responsible for the issuance,
validation or payment, of lost, stolen, counterfeit or multiple Cashout Vouchers.
• The casino is discharged from any liability or claims once the Cashout Voucher is presented for redemption.
The right thing to do is to turn in the ticket. In doing so, you are not stealing and can’t be held accountable for what happens next. If another patron truly did lose a ticket worth a large sum of money and you find it and turn it in, either the person who lost the Cashout Voucher will be grateful, or you’ll probably end up with some or all of the money if an investigation can’t determine who the rightful owner is. I’m sure if you ever lost a ticket at a casino you’d appreciate someone else doing the right thing by turning it in so you can claim what’s rightfully yours!
• The casino reserves the right to withhold validation and pay-
Oh, by the way, this doesn’t just apply to lost and found Cash-

ment pending an investigation to determine whether the voucher is lost or stolen.
• Tickets are valid for a limited number of days. This timeframe keeps getting shorter. (Tickets used to be valid for up to one year. Currently, most Cashout Vouchers are only valid for 30, 60, or 90 days.)
• Instructions on how to redeem the Cashout Voucher.

WINNING WAYS By Mark Novak
BLUEWATER Resort & Casino’s Many Positives
M
y last visit to BlueWater Resort & Casino in Parker, AZ on the beautiful Colorado River was just a few weeks ago at the end of September. I was sent there by my boss to walk the casino floor and report back. Since you’ve read this far into the issue, I’m sure you’ll recall the article in the Great Games section on page 10 announcing the arrival of yet another brand new slot to their casino floor. But, that’s not the only reason why BlueWater Resort & Casino is among my favorite Arizona Casinos. As is the case for all the casinos I frequent, I am drawn to BlueWater Resort & Casino for multiple reasons. 1. The slot floor has all of the latest games available in pennies, and it is big, open, not smoky, and has over 500 slots. 2. There is a high limit slot room for bigger bets on video poker and the slots. 3. The employees are friendly and welcoming. 4. The food is great and reasonably priced. 5. You can’t beat the view. 6. There is a water slide inside the resort! 7. The location is lucky in my opinion. Gambling with water nearby (and inside the casino!) is always a good thing. 8. The Slot Director still has the original version of Caveman Keno available to patrons. The one with the good pay table. While all the reasons I list above are important, reason 8 (the original Caveman Keno) is perhaps the most important to me in this particular case. Why? Well, the original version of Caveman Keno is hard to find these days. Fans of this Video Keno game (you know who you are!) enjoy full jackpot pays up to 2,000 credits per credit bet (1,000 in many new versions) on the upper end of the pay table, a multiplier of 10X (only 8X in many new versions) on all pays when three eggs (randomly drawn at the start of the game) are hit, and the original graphics and sounds. For those readers who have never been to BlueWater Resort & casino, I suggest you try it out for yourself as I strongly believe you will not be disappointed with your overall experience at the Resort & Casino. For those readers who are already loyal visitors, good for you! Win or lose, I always walk into this casino happy, and I walk out happy. What more can you ask for? Located on AZ 95 on the Western edge of Arizona just South of Lake Havasu, BlueWater Resort & Casino is only 165 miles from Phoenix. The drive is beautiful, easy, and fast. HOW TO PLAY TEXAS SHOOTOUT Sit Down & Get Comfortable Knowing The Game Is Player-Dealer Based
T
exas Hold ’Em is the most popular game played in Arizona poker rooms. If you want some variety, you’ll have to wander over to the Pit to play Mississippi Stud or Three Card Poker. If you want to stick to your Texas roots, many casinos in Arizona offer Ultimate Texas Hold ’Em or World Poker Tour (in 3x and 10x varieties). Another Hold ’Em-based table game you might want to try is Texas Shootout. You can sit down and get comfortable knowing the game is player-dealer based. And, each player uses their two cards and the five community cards to make their best hand. Just don’t let the fact that the game is played using a six deck shoe blow your mind. Texas Shootout Rules Like other poker games found in the Pit, Texas Shootout offers a poker bet and an optional side wager. You’ll have the chance to make another wager if you want to split your hand. That’s right. Each player and the dealer start with four cards, so your cards might be exact matches like Ace of Spades and Ace of Spades. Now you’ve got some decisions to make! Once the bets are placed, and the players get their cards, you have the chance to look at your cards and select your two best and play them or to split your four cards into two hands. If you split, you’ll need to make another bet that matches your original wager. If you do so, you’ll also have to match your side bet. Be careful! When all players have made their moves, the dealer turns their four cards over. The dealer chooses only two cards according to a “house way” chart. The best starting hand group is a pair of 8’s or better. Aces would obviously top the pair list. The next best group is an Ace-Face hand (Ace-Jack, Queen, or King) and third best is a small pair of 2’s through 7’s. After that comes an Ace with a small suited card. Starting to sound familiar? The best strategy is to choose your best two cards and play one hand. If you play the second hand, make sure it is a pair of sixes or higher, or an Ace-King or Ace-Queen. Otherwise, stick to one hand. Winning hands pay even money. The dealer wins all tie hands.
22 Arizona Gaming Guide | November 2017 | azgamingguide.com
The Side Bet The side bet offers a payout for your best five-card poker hand. You’ll have to make at least trips to get a push. The highest hand is five-of-a-kind, suited. You’ll have to sit around for a long time waiting for that hand to show up since it’s about 80 times harder to make five-of-a-kind suited than to make a royal flush. You do the math. If you are wondering about the house edge, the standard poker wager needed to play the hand is about 2.57 percent. The house edge on the side wager is about triple that, at 7.29 percent with a pay table that offers 2-to-1 on a straight. The house edge is higher if a straight pays even money. If you are betting the final hand side wager, there is also an “envy bonus.” That bonus is paid on the final value of your fellow players’ hands, so if a monster gets made, you’ll catch a bonus. If you decide to give Texas Shootout a try, let us know how it goes! Send us an e-mail to editor@azgamingguide.com with Texas Shootout as the subject. Good luck! $

A HISTORY OF WINNING BLACKJACK How A Simple Game Changed My Life
B
lackjack originated in French Casinos around 1700 where it was called "Vingt-et-un" (Twenty-and-one) and has been played in the US since the 1800's. Blackjack was named as such because if a player was dealt a Jack of Spades and an Ace of Spades as the first two cards (Spade being the color black of course), the player was paid extra. Gambling was legal out West from the 1850's to 1910, at which time Nevada made it a felony to operate a gambling game. In 1931, Nevada re-legalized casino gambling where Blackjack became one of the primary games of chance offered to gamblers. The first recognized effort to apply mathematics to Blackjack began in 1953 and culminated in 1956 with a published paper. Roger Baldwin wrote a paper in the Journal of the American Statistical Association titled The Optimum Strategy in Blackjack These pioneers used calculators, probability, and statistics theory to substantially reduce the house advantage. Although the title of their paper was "Optimum Strategy," it wasn't really the best strategy because they really needed a computer to refine their system. Professor Edward O. Thorp picked up where Baldwin and company left off. In 1962, Thorp refined their basic strategy and developed the first card counting techniques. He published his results in Beat the Dealer, a book that became so popular that for a week in 1963 it was on the New York Times Best Seller list. The book also scared the hell out of the casinos. The Casinos were so affected by the book that they began to change the rules of the game to make it more difficult to win. The rule changes didn't last very long as players protested by not playing the new Blackjack. The unfavorable changes resulted in a loss of income for the casinos, and of course not making money is a sin, so they quickly resorted back to the original rules. As Thorp's "Ten-Count" method wasn't easy to master and many people didn't really understand it anyway, the casinos made a bundle from the game’s newly gained popularity thanks to Thorp's book and all the media attention it generated. Another major contributor to the history of winning Blackjack play is Julian Braun, who worked at IBM. His thousands of lines of computer code and hours of Blackjack simulation on IBM mainframes resulted in what we refer to today as “Basic Strategy,” and also a number of card counting techniques. His conclusions were used in the second edition of Beat the Dealer, and later in Lawrence Revere's 1977 book Playing Blackjack as a Busi-
ness. Lawrence Revere was my personal mentor and I actually took one-on-one lessons from him! Lastly, let me mention Ken Uston who lived here in Phoenix and was a teammate of mine. He used five computers that were built into the shoes of our playing team in 1977. We won over a hundred thousand dollars in a very short time, but one of the computers was confiscated and sent to the FBI. The Feds decided that the computer used public information on Blackjack playing and was not a cheating device. You may have seen this story in a movie made about our Blackjack exploits, and detailed in his book The Big Player. Ken was also featured on a 1981 Sixty Minutes show and helped lead a successful legal challenge to prevent Atlantic City Casinos from barring card counters. Then a group of the MIT students used our ideas in the 1990’s and beat the Vegas Casinos out of millions of dollars. Their story was told in the movie 21. $

98° have made their Christmas plans for this year. The group is embarking on a 31-city 98° at Christmas tour starting in November, highlighting their new album Let It Snow. This special holiday tour arrives at Desert Diamond Casinos & Entertainment’s Diamond Center on Friday, December 22, 2017. Tickets start at $25 and are on sale through Star Tickets and at Desert Diamond Casino’s Rewards Center. Doors open at 7pm and the show starts at 8pm.
From his Dove Award winning gospel albums to his genredefining Southern rock anthems and his CMA Awardwinning country hits, few artists have left a more indelible mark on America’s musical landscape than Charlie Daniels. He began his career playing bluegrass music with the Misty Mountain Boys. After moving to Nashville in 1967, however, he began making a name for himself as a songwriter, session musician and producer. His own unique voice as an artist emerged as Charlie recorded his self-titled solo album in 1970 for Capitol Records. Two years later he formed the Charlie Daniels Band and the group scored its first hit with the top ten “Uneasy Rider.” Since then, the Charlie Daniels Band has populated radio with such memorable hits as “Long Haired Country Boy,” “The South’s Gonna Do It Again,” “In America,” “The Legend of Wooley Swamp” and of course, his signature song, “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” which won a Grammy for Best Country Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group in 1979 as well as single of the year at the Country Music Association Awards. Last year he recorded and released his newest album, “Night Hawk,” a unique spin on cowboy songs both well known and uncovered through the years. Treena Parvello, Director of Public Relations and Communications for the Tohono O’odham Gaming Enterprise, said, “The Diamond Center welcomes another legend in the music industry on December 9! The Charlie Daniels Band is returning to Desert Diamond Casino with tickets starting at only $25!” $

Treena Parvello, Director of Public Relations and Communications for the Tohono O’odham Gaming Enterprise, said, “Nick and Drew Lachey announced the official reunion of 98° in 2012 and ever since then Desert Diamond Casinos & Entertainment has been waiting to bring them to Southern Arizona! Fans shouldn’t wait long to get tickets for this must-see holiday show at the Diamond Center on December 23, a perfect gift for your friends!” The vocal quartet comprised of Nick Lachey, Drew Lachey, Justin Jeffre and Jeff Timmons who are renowned for signature R&B-tinged, four-part harmonies will release Let It Snow, their new Christmas album on October 13, 2017 via UMe. It is their first new album in 4 years and a follow-up 18 years in the making to the now classic album This Christmas. Recording Let It Snow was an easy decision. "As a group, our favorite record, hands down, is This Christmas,” says Drew. "We’re proud of the music, the harmonies, the production. It's a Christmas record that every year people can put on and enjoy.” "We have primarily a female audience, but we’ll have guys come up to us and say, 'You know what? I love the Christmas album; my mom bought it for me.’ It’s bro code that the Christmas album’s allowed," Timmons jokingly added. DO CASINO VISITORS SET A BUDGET? And, More Importantly, Do They Stick To It?
Y
ou’ve been down on your luck and the jackpots have been few and far between. The money you brought with you to the casino didn’t last as long as you’d hoped it would. Now you’re out of a bankroll, aren’t quite ready to go home, and wondering what to do? Tempted by all the ATM machines just a spitting distance away, you struggle with the urge to give in and just take out more money. Funny how you may have to walk around a while to find where the restroom, buffet or players club is at a casino, but an ATM always just happens to be right in front of you—with at least one person waiting in line! Not setting a budget or going over a predetermined amount is the biggest mistake gamblers make and we’ve all been guilty of it at one time or another. If you don’t consider how many spins on a slot machine or hands at the blackjack table your money
34 Arizona Gaming Guide | November 2017 | azgamingguide.com
will buy you when determining your budget for a night out at the casino, then you may be setting yourself up for disappointment! Bringing $100 with you to the casino if you intend on playing for several hours may not be such a realistic expectation. If you’re playing the slots at 50 cents per spin, your $100 will buy you 200 spins. You may be done with those spins and out of money in 15 minutes or less if things don’t go well. Always be realistic when setting your budget. You don’t want to be out of money waiting around for your friends or family or, worse yet, running to the ATM for more money! $
