EDITOR’S NOTE

THANK YOU READERS! Wishing You The Very Best For 2018

T

his new year is going to be great, awesome, exciting, amazing, unbelievable, fantastic, and so much more! I can’t wait to see what happens! Especially, for all the new Slots coming our way!

I want to take the time and mention a special reader of ours, Joyce Galewick, who recently published her first book Dance ‘Till The Music Stops. In her eighties (no, that’s not a typo!), she has written her life story as an inspiration to all of us. Joyce says, “Never give up and never give in. You can reach the mountaintop! No matter how tough life seems, just follow your dreams, and dance ‘till the music stops.” Her book is available on Amazon.com, through ChristianFaithPublishing.com, and at the Fort McDowell Casino gift shop. Check it out! Thanks to our readers for always providing us with feedback about our magazine. We appreciate you and are grateful for your loyalty. Please don’t hesitate to reach out and let us know what you think and keep all of your questions rolling in. We get a lot of them, both handwritten and emailed, so it may take a while to get back to all of you, but we do love reading them, and responding. And, while we select some for publication by committee, we are working on being able to share all of them with all of you! Stay tuned! Please visit our Facebook at: Facebook.com/ArizonaGamingGuide, become part of our community and share your thoughts and experiences with others who also love the same casino games you do. You can sign up for our e-newsletter and find current and back issues of the Arizona Gaming Guide on our website at AZGamingGuide.com. Let me know what you think of this issue and have fun! Thank You!

PLAYERS TALK

Q: What is the better machine to play at casinos, a single play machine or a multi-game machine? Mark Frederick—Yuma, AZ A: This is a great question Mark! Thank you for sending it in! There is no difference to us as players between selecting a single play machine or a multi-game machine whether you enjoy playing Slots, Video Poker, Video Keno, or electronic Table Games. Multi-game Video Poker and Video Keno machines have been around for decades. These units were created so casinos could offer many different versions of Video Poker and Video Keno without taking up a lot of space. Regardless of which Video Poker or Video Keno game is selected by a player, the machine runs off one random number generator (RNG). Each time a game is initiated by pressing a bet button (either “Bet One” or “Bet Max”) the machine’s software asks for random numbers from the RNG. Once the random numbers have been created and stored, the machine’s software uses those values to determine game outcomes. This RNG and software behavior is dictated by regulations governing the design and performance of electronic gaming devices (EGD—an industry term used to describe Slots, Video Poker machines, electronic Table Games and any other games that might be out there) within casinos. These regulations are upheld at the state level (i.e. Arizona, Nevada, New Jersey, California, etc.) in the United States. In other countries around the world, the EGD regulatory bodies are either at the federal level or are also at the province/state level. The regulations are the same in their intent from one jurisdiction to the next where the RNG and basic game functionality is concerned. Furthermore, these regulations protect us as players. The regulations are written in the interest of fairness in order to prevent EGDs from deceiving players while at the same time allowing casinos to offer an entertainment experience to customers which provides the casino with a revenue stream not derived via fraudulent means. And, casinos want EGDs to be regulated and based on verified and tested RNGs so they can rely on simple statistics and time in order to make money rather than the proverbial crapshoot if EGDs weren’t regulated! With a single game EGD, the game software and RNG interact in the same manner as described above. A bet is placed, random

numbers are requested, generated, and stored having used the game’s software and the RNG to do so. The short term and long term effect to a player is just their luck, governed by the RNG at each machine, whether it is a single– or multi-game Slot. If sitting at a multi-game EGD has your brain racing in circles wondering what might have happened had you been playing one of the other games at the same instant, the Arizona Gaming Guide recommends you not play a multi-game machine in a casino. There is no positive result in constantly wondering “what if” especially since you have no way of resolving the question! If being at a multi-game machine does not make you neurotic, then go for it! Your experience will be the same based on your luck at that moment and not based on anything else. Q: Do you mail a monthly magazine to someone that subscribes and lives in British Columbia? TABLE GAMES By Al Moe

STRANGE STREAKS AT THE TABLES How Players Can Master Them!

G

ambling and Table Game play are filled with streaks of all kinds. Some are good, some are not so good. Doyle Brunson in Super System recalled that at one point in his poker career he won 55 straight sessions, easily setting his family up with a healthy cash reserve for the coming year. His book was subtitled How I Made Over $1,000,000 Playing Poker. At the other end of the spectrum is a story from Ken Uston, the first superstar of Blackjack. His seminal work on counting cards was called Million Dollar Blackjack. He recalled a story from his Las Vegas days when he had 63 consecutive losing sessions across the green felt. That’s an unbelievable series of bad cards and bad luck he somehow managed to overcome. What’s my point? Just remember the journey can be breathtakingly high, but also soul-searchingly low. Most of the time our gambling is somewhere closer to an even plain, with minor bumps along the way. And, since the house has the favor, or holds the edge, downturns are more likely to occur. Over the course of a year, you’ll experience the full gamut of emotions that gambling brings. You’ll be happy, sad, and often frustrated. A few nights you’ll go home a winner, but more often than not you’ll enjoy an evening of play that will cost you about the same amount as one single bet per hour. Those are the facts. No matter how good you might be at World Poker Tour, Three Card Poker, or Pai Gow, there’s just no way of beating those games unless you catch a streak of good luck. And, without a lightning-in-a-bottle kit, streaks can be tough to find and tougher to catch. The good news is that even a short run of good cards can be very profitable. I once watched a woman buy-in for $100 at a Blackjack table who lost 17 straight hands. She bet $5 on each and lost everyone, including three double downs. Strangely enough, she didn’t seem upset when she had to dig for a second hundred-dollar bill. She lost one more hand (yes, 18 straight), then won her first. She let the $10 ride and got a Blackjack. She pulled back $5 and bet $20. On that hand, she got an 11, doubled down and won. She

14 Arizona Gaming Guide | January 2018 | azgamingguide.com

pulled back $10 and won three straight hands with a $30 wager. At that point, she had won six hands and lost 18, but she was even. After that she flat-bet $10, winning 15 of the next 25 hands. Then she quit, up $50. The Lucky Lady lost eight more hands than she won, but walked a winner. You can too, given a decent streak of winning hands at some point in your play. Since you can’t count on a lucky streak, the only way to walk a winner with any regularity is to raise your bets when you are winning and keep your wagers low when you are losing. I know, it’s easier said than done. Don’t give in to the temptation to double-up to get even, chasing lost money with larger wagers. Don’t try to get even tonight by risking tomorrow’s rent. Just raise your bets a little when you win and ride the winners to the finish line! Let us know what you think about this article! Send us an e-mail to editor@azgamingguide.com with “Al’s Table Games” as the subject. Good luck! $

ARE YOU MAKING GOOD DECISIONS? Analyzing Table Selection, Table Limits, Your Bankroll And More

T

he decisions that you make in regards to your Blackjack play can be influenced by your personal factors such as the amount of time you have to play. Your bankroll and your overall Blackjack skills have a great deal to do with the choices that you make at the table. Your surroundings can influence you, the number of players at your table, the rules of the casino, the number of decks used, a nagging partner or spouse, and even the management of the pit bosses have a great deal to do with the selections you make. Don't be afraid to make the correct play thinking the other players might criticize you for hitting a twelve against a two. There are very few players who know basic strategy perfectly, so don't let anyone intimidate you. The best thing about learning to play Blackjack the correct way is that it pays off. If you learn all of the right decisions to make, Blackjack has one of the lowest house edges in the casino. Your game will improve and your money will last longer. In fact, you will have a 25% chance of being ahead after 25,000 hands. You certainly can't say that about Slot machines! Here are some factors that you should consider to help you make good Blackjack decisions. Blackjack Table Selection Hands are played at a fast pace so if you choose a table with several players you have more time to make correct decisions, especially if you sit in the middle or the end of the table. Most Casinos will let you have a basic strategy chart while you play, so take advantage of that if you’re not 100% sure on basic strategy. Additionally, the slower pace will make your money last longer. Playing at a full table (on average) you will get around sixty hands an hour, while playing one-on-one with the dealer you will average approximately two hundred hands in an hour. Blackjack Bankroll Your Blackjack Bankroll should be disposable income, money that you can comfortably afford to lose. If you are a recreational player, you should look at your Bankroll as entertainment money. You could go to the movies, out to dinner, or go to the casino with your entertainment money, but once it's gone your entertainment is over. Under no circumstances should you gamble your rent, child support, or car payment money. Besides being a special kind of stupid (in my opinion) if you do, you won't play correctly either. Depending on the type of Blackjack player you are, will determine how much of a bankroll you need. The professional player who comes to the casino for one reason only, to extract money from the casino, usually has a separate stash built up from winnings. Personally, I have a journal that I use to track

16 Arizona Gaming Guide | January 2018 | azgamingguide.com

the date, casino, time, and wins/losses. I know down to the penny how much I win or lose. I have statistics for the last 30 years. Doing this also demonstrates how good or bad your game really is. What ever size your bankroll is, you should only risk a fraction of it on any one hand. If you are going to be playing a few hours 1%-5% of your bankroll is all you should be betting per hand. If you are playing at a $5 table you need about $500. That way you can lose 20 hands per hour for up to 5 hours. Blackjack Table Limits When choosing a Blackjack table, find one that has a minimum bet you are comfortable with. Generally, that bet should only be 5% of your Bankroll. I think most players are the most comfortable with playing at a $5 table, although they are getting harder to find, especially during peak times. Basic Strategy Decisions Basic Strategy was developed by running millions of simulations on an IBM mainframe to find out the best way to play each hand in Blackjack. If a Blackjack player knows basic strategy perfectly, over the long run they can reduce the casinos’ advantage to around –0.54% depending on the casinos’ rules, and how many decks that are used. Most players at some point start playing hunches which gives the casino an additional 5% advantage over them. That means instead of losing 50 cents for every $100 put into play they lose $5 for every $100. With chart in hand, go to the table and when each hand comes up look at the chart and play the hand correctly. Not only will you give yourself the best chance of winning but the other players at your table will appreciate your text book play. Blackjack Factors As you can see, there are many factors that affect your decisions you make at the Blackjack table. If you would like to discover additional tactics that can help you win, or need basic strategy, go to my free website FreeWebs.com/TJsBlackjackCorner. Let us know what you think about this article! Send us an e-mail to editor@azgamingguide.com with “TJ’s Table Games” as the subject. Good luck! $ Writer TJ Jorgensen has been a professional Blackjack player for over 20 years. WINNING WAYS By Mark Novak

PUT MONEY IN YOUR WALLET How To Quickly Boost Your Bankroll!

V

isiting a casino and expecting to enjoy several hours worth of entertainment on a tight, limited budget is difficult, if not impossible, nowadays. The days of walking into a casino with $50-$100 and expecting to play all day long are over. Given that many of us don’t have unlimited spending money, we all need to carefully plan our casino budgets and get creative on ways we can increase our bankroll. One idea that will put more money in your pocket for your next casino trip (or possibly next several casino trips) without breaking the bank is to empty the attic, the garage and the storage unit! Chances are you’re sitting on (well, under, or next to, or actually paying to store) hundreds of dollars in unwanted household goods! It’s time to say goodbye to all those items just taking up space and collecting dust. These websites will help you get some extra cash for your castoffs.

• Amazon.com may be known best for book shopping, but did you know that you can also sell virtually anything you want? • When you’re done playing Slotomania, check out the marketplace section of Facebook.com. Yes, Facebook actually has a place for people to list items to sell! • Exchangemyphone.com buys a variety of popular phones and they don’t even have to be in perfect condition. Get a quote, ship for free, and get paid! • Do you have rare items such as coins, stamps, classic toys and vintage electronics? EBay.com is still the best website on the internet for branded and highly sought-after items. • Craigslist.org continues to be one of the best sites to sell large items to local buyers. Expensive to ship items like furniture, office equipment, and exercise equipment always do well. Better yet, get a group of friends, family members or neighbors together and do a community garage sale! $

M

ariah Jordan Sharpe, representing the Colorado River Indian Tribes (CRIT), was crowned Miss Indian Arizona 2017-2018 on October 14, 2017 at the Chandler Center for the Arts. Mariah also won the Best Evening Wear, Oral Presentation, Essay, and Community Service Awards. The theme for this year’s program was Elders – Our Spirit, Our Foundation. Mariah is the daughter of Chaweka Fisher and Isaac Sharpe. She is an enrolled member of CRIT located on the Colorado River in Parker, Arizona and is of Mohave and Chemehuevi descent. Currently Mariah resides in Phoenix, Arizona where she attends Paradise Valley Community College pursuing a degree in health and wellness. Her goal is to complete her Bachelor’s Degree and then apply to medical school. Her platform as the 56th Miss Indian Arizona is to help connect

youth with their elders to preserve cultural knowledge. Mariah states, “Our elders are living treasures and I would love to bring attention to how much we can learn, grow, and treasure them.” The new Miss Indian Arizona enjoys time with family and friends, paddle boarding on the Colorado River, golfing and learning traditional stories and songs from her elders. Mariah will now face a rigorous year of travel to many Arizona Indian reservations and special appearances at various schools, pow-wows and other state events. She will also travel to several out-of-state events. In addition to this schedule, she is expected to maintain her school attendance which will be very challenging. The Miss Indian Arizona Association’s philosophy is that education is a very high priority. As the new Miss Indian Arizona, Mariah is literally following in the footsteps of her elders. Tracing her heritage back to her

It’s still a feeling I haven’t grasped yet. I see the crown and I see the sash, but it hasn’t hit me fully,” Sharpe said in an interview. This year’s winner is definitely an example of the power of positive thinking, a fact she openly admits in a recent interview. "I guess you could say growing up I always saw myself as being Miss Indian Arizona one day and it's a dream that came true." During last year’s Miss Indian Arizona, Sharpe competed and was awarded the second attendant title (second runner-up). However, Mariah is not one to quit and has always been focused on self-improvement from a young age. She said in an interview recently, "I was an introvert and I didn't like it. I went to my mom a month before our Junior Miss (CRIT) pageant and told her, 'Hey, Mom, I wanna run. I want to come out of my shell and be able to express myself to our community.' We spent a whole month preparing for a pageant and then came pageant time, I was on that stage in front of our community scared as ever, shaking, and look where it's landed me!” Representing Arizona’s 22 Native American tribes, as well as her own, Miss Sharpe is now a cultural and goodwill ambassador within and beyond the borders of this state and tribal reservations. Surrender

Desert Diamond Casino—Sahuarita February 24

Hon-Dah Resort Casino January 19

Country music star Aaron Watson is making a special Tucson Rodeo weekend appearance at Desert Diamond Casino’s Diamond Center on Saturday, February 24, 2018. Tickets are on sale now through Star Tickets and at Desert Diamond Casino’s Rewards Center. Tickets start at $15. Doors open at 7pm and the show starts at 8pm.

The name says it all! Based out of Arizona, Surrender is a complete re-creation of the famous Hall of Fame rockers Cheap Trick back in the late 70s and early 80s.

West Texas native Aaron Watson isn’t interested in what someone else thinks he should do. But instead of getting lonely as he sidesteps expectations, he’s gaining followers, hundreds of thousands of them. Throughout his 17-year career that spans a dozen albums and more than 2,500 shows throughout the U.S. and Europe, 39-year-old Watson has stubbornly and sincerely identified with the everyman, even as he’s proven to be the exception to the rule.

The concert is amazing with the band playing all the famous Cheap Trick hits like I Want You To Want Me, Dream Police, Surrender and many more.

The latest evidence of Watson’s homespun singularity is Vaquero, an ambitious 16-song set of character-driven storytelling, level-headed cultural commentary, and love songs for grownups that promise to further solidify his status as one of today’s finest torch-bearers of real country music. Vaquero is the follow-up to 2015’s The Underdog, an acclaimed collection that made history as the first time an independent, male country artist had ever outsold majors to premiere No. 1 on the Billboard Country Albums Chart. Refusing to worry about charts or current trends, Watson hopes the main thing Vaquero accomplishes is bringing his growing legion of fans joy. Treena Parvello, Director of Public Relations and Communications for the Tohono O’odham Gaming Enterprise, said, “We’re so excited to welcome Aaron Watson to the Diamond Center for a special rodeo weekend show! Southern Arizona loves the rodeo and country music, so bringing the two together is a real treat. Get your tickets early, because they’re sure to go fast!” $

The show brings back the original lineup of Rick Nielsen, Robin Zander, Bun E' Carlos and Tom Peterson.

The cast recreates the era with the exact instruments, costumes and looks. You can’t help but get sucked in and believe it’s the real musicians they portray. Surrender is the tribute act bringing you closest to the sights and sounds of classic Cheap Trick. $ Upcoming Entertainment At Hon-Dah Resort Casino: Jan. 2-6 Walker Williams (Country) Jan. 9-13 In-A-Fect (R&B) Jan. 16-20 The Doo-Wah Riders (Country) Jan. 23-27 Clark County Band (Country) Jan. 30-Feb. 3 High Rise (Variety) Feb. 6-10 Orchard Fire (Country) Feb. 13-17 Kid-n-Nic (Variety) Feb. 20-24 James Presley Band (Country & Variety)

SAMI’S SMACKDOWN By Sami Becker

THE POWER OF POSITIVE THINKING! How I Maximize My Enjoyment And Minimize My Losses

M

y casino trips and my approach to them has evolved over the years. I used to accept most invitations from friends or family to go to a casino. Now I go to a casino when I feel like going.

I see now how I can clearly trace this losing and winning discrepancy between being invited and going when my gut tells me to back to my attitude.

I keep financial records, as all casino enthusiasts should, of my trips. These records include my bankroll, where and when I go, what I played (down to the machine numbers and their location), free play, other comps, free concert tickets, gas, etc. Most importantly I track my wins and losses.

When I decide to go, I’m happy and positive in my overall attitude. When others invite me to go, I may have to rearrange my week, my weekend, or something else in order to make it work. And, frequently, I’m not having that gut feeling to go. Coincidence? I think not! I’ve got the records to back up my claim. Think about your casino trips, is there a similar pattern? $

After reviewing the accumulated data, I began to notice a pattern. When I took a trip based on my “desire to go,” let’s call it my instinct, I’d be even or up. When I took a trip when other people invited me, I’d be down and rarely even. The numbers don’t lie, which is why all my readers should keep records!

Do YOU have a RANT OR RAVE? If so, write me at: sami@azgamingguide.com or by mail at: “Sami” Arizona Gaming Guide PO BOX 20636 Mesa, AZ 85277. If I pick your topic for publication in a future issue, you’ll get a $25 gift card!
