PLAYERS TALK

Question: My question for you is: What is the difference between the slot machines that have the bingo cards on them and the ones that don't? I heard that the machines that have bingo installed means you are playing the bingo cards and not the slot game. Is this true? Cheryl Johnston—Glendale, Arizona Answer: The difference between slot machines with Bingo cards on them and the ones without is a key classification and functionality criteria which we will explain below. Class II slot machines are simulating a very large game of Bingo. The outcome of which is determined by one main “Boss” computer. The slot machines in the Class II setting are essentially “Worker Drones” to the “Boss” waiting to be told what to do.

Number 009 019 029 039 049 059 069 079 089 099

Win $1 $2 $3 $4 $5 $7.50 $10 $12.50 $15 $30

That’s 10 winners out of 100 outcomes. If we set a game rule that it costs $1 to play, with $90 in total wins (add up the winners) this hypothetical game returns 90% to the player and takes 10% for the house over time.

Once a Class II slot machine’s bet button has been pressed, this Worker Drone asks the Boss for a bingo card. The Bingo card is displayed somewhere on screen. The Worker Drone asks the Boss to play Bingo with the assigned Bingo card. The Boss randomly draws a specific outcome from all the possible outcomes available to it within the Bingo game it is currently running and then based on the outcome drawn informs the Worker Drone if they won or lost on that spin.

Now, because we are playing a Bingo game, remember how Bingo works. The caller in a Bingo game waits for a ball to be blown up a tube from a collection of 75 balls which are randomly bounced around in a globe subjected to air currents. The Bingo caller continues to announce balls in the order they are drawn out of the air chamber.

Over time, Worker Drones continue to ask the Boss for outcomes, which the Boss provides until the number of outcomes is exhausted. Then the Boss starts a new bingo game and the process begins all over again.

With a Class II slot the same mechanics apply. There are a defined set of outcomes (in our case 100) and a random number generator continues to draw outcomes out of the entire set of outcomes. But, and pay close attention here, just like in Bingo, once an outcome (i.e. ball) is selected, it is no longer part of the remaining outcomes.

So, to summarize, Class II slot machines (including Video Poker, Video Keno, etc.) with Bingo cards on their game displays are participating in a massive Bingo game. Random numbers are generated by the Boss and are doled out to individual Worker Drones on the casino floor. Class II slot machines are designed to function in the following way. Define a massive pool of numbers. Let’s keep things simple and have our massive pool be the numbers 001-100. That’s 100 numbers. Next let’s assign 10 numbers to be winners. Those numbers will be 009, 019, 029, 039, 049, 059, 069, 079, 089, and 099. All other numbers are losers. Now we assign the win amounts to the winning numbers. Let’s pretend we decide on the following set of winning amounts as listed at the top of the next column.

So, to provide an example with our newly constructed Class II game, we’ll have two Worker Drones playing Bingo with our Boss. Worker Drone 1 is a game called Crazy Colossal Cougars Of Cash and our player presses the bet button and spends $1. Worker Drone 1 asks the Boss for an outcome, the Boss randomly generates the number 033, sends the message back to Worker Drone 1. Worker Drone 1’s Bingo card displays a loser and Crazy Colossal Cougars Of Cash also displays a loss in some fashion. The player at Worker Drone 1 bets $1 again. Worker Drone 1 askes the Boss for another outcome. To be clear, the Boss has all the outcomes except 033 at its disposal! 033 was used and is now out of play! Just like in real Bingo, if N33 was called, it can’t be called again until the next game of Bingo begins! (Continued on page 8)

PLAYERS TALK (Continued from page 6)

Now the Boss picks from the remaining 99 outcomes randomly and comes up with 089. 089 is a winner (worth $15)! Worker Drone 1 displays a winner on the on-screen Bingo card, displays a winner on Crazy Colossal Cougars Of Cash by entering a bonus, or perhaps lining up a bunch of Crazy Colossal Cougars! Now, another player sits down at Worker Drone 2 while player 1 (at Worker Drone 1) is talking to their friend on the phone about how they just won $15. The player at Worker Drone 2 makes a $1 wager on a game called Delightfully Dubious Dragons Of Cash. Worker Drone 2 asks the Boss for a random outcome. The Boss has how many outcomes to choose from currently? That’s right, 98! Worker Drone 1 used up 2 outcomes already, 033 and 089. Those two outcomes aren’t available anymore! The Boss selects the number 099 randomly for Worker Drone 2! Sweet! The player at Worker Drone 2 just won $30! So the Bingo card on Worker Drone 2’s screen displays a winner and all the Delightfully Dubious Dragons line up for an on screen “Big Win!” Yay! Meanwhile, the player at Worker Drone 1 finished talking with their friend saying, “This machine is hot, I hope I hit the jackpot!”

all the Worker Drones before the new Bingo game starts. How do we know all this? Well, we have designed Class II slot machines from the ground up, that’s how! So, what’s different about Class III slot machines? Class III slot machines have their own random number generator. They are not Worker Drones to Bosses. They aren’t playing a giant Bingo game with everyone else in the casino. Class III slots have all outcomes available to them at all times from one bet to the next. Yes, on a Class III slot you can hit bonus after bonus after bonus after bonus from one spin to the next to the next forever. This of course is exceedingly unlikely, but when compared to a Class II slot, if a Worker Drone is randomly assigned a winner, which is then represented as a bonus on screen, this can only continue for a finite number of times (however unlikely) until the number of winning outcomes represented by a bonus is exhausted from within the Bingo game. A Worker Drone can’t win with another bonus again until all the other outcomes were used first ending the Bingo game. A Class III slot has no such limitations!

Unfortunately for both players, the jackpot (the highest win in our example) is not available anymore as it was just used up and won’t become available again until the Boss has randomly drawn and assigned all 100 numbers to Worker Drone 1 and Worker Drone 2 in our hypothetical set up.

So, which is better? Class II or Class III?

That’s how a Class II (Bingo driven) slot machine set up works. Once an outcome is drawn by the Boss and sent out to a Worker Drone, that outcome isn’t available anymore until the entire set of outcomes is exhausted and the Bingo game starts over.

It may look like a slot, it may feel like a slot, but you are playing Bingo against everyone else in the casino.

Of course, on a massive scale (our “massive” example included only 100 outcomes) the number of outcomes is vast (like billions) and the number and variety of winning outcomes is much more diverse. For example, our hypothetical game could be expanded simply by doubling the number of outcomes. Outcome 009, as a $1 winner is repeated with outcome 109. Outcome 019, as a $2 winner is repeated with outcome 119, and so on across 200 outcomes numbered 001 to 200. But why stop at 200? Take our fictitious game and instead of doubling (multiplying by 2) we could multiply by 10,000. We now have 100,000 winners across 1,000,000 outcomes. Of course, we also have 900,000 losers as well! Now, all 1,000,000 outcomes have to be played through by the Boss and

08 Arizona Gaming Guide | November 2018 | azgamingguide.com

Personally, we don’t like the concept of Class II slots. You are playing Bingo when you play a Class II slot. Not all of the outcomes of the game are available to you.

Class II slots are random. Mathematically, Class II slots are sound. There is no cheating going on. You won’t tell or feel the difference between a Class II and a Class III slot, but we prefer to play a random number generator with all the options available to us from one spin to the next. Due to our experience, we’ve seen behind the curtain, past the smoke and mirrors, so to speak, in the casino industry. Class III is the way to play. Why are there Class II and Class III slots? Essentially, so tribes without state compacts can still operate “slot machines” without the repercussion of operating Class III slots which are treated as Electronic Gaming Devices and are subject to taxation and strict regulation. Class II slots are just a Bingo game. Tribes can run Bingo games on their reservations without much involvement by the state or the federal government in terms of taxation and oversight. $

GOT AN IDEA FOR A NEW TABLE GAME? Casinos Are Always Looking For New Games!

G

ot an idea for a new table game? You might live in the perfect state. Arizona offers almost two dozen casinos and plenty of gamblers. Are they looking for new games? Always. Will they love anything that comes out? Well, not exactly; it comes down to what’s fun, easy to learn, and a win-win for the customer and the casino. Blackjack is the most popular table game in the world. Simple to learn, good odds, and casino owners love it because the game is in the public domain. No pesky royalties to pay to a game inventor. Most popular games like Pai Gow and Ultimate Texas Hold’em come with monthly fees. That cost isn’t much to a casino, but the payback is sweet for an industrious soul who harnesses lightning and proves their game is more than just a one-time flash in the atmosphere. Still, it’s a numbers thing. With hundreds of new games designed and pitched to casino owners each year, very few are field-trialed, and fewer accepted by the public. Game Inventors Successful game inventors hold a winning combination of utter determination and good luck. A person who marries a spark of genius with a dash of gaming savvy can succeed. Could it be you?

rights and ownership. That’s a nice payoff for his years of work. Arizona Inventors Arizona casinos add new games each year, some of which have been invented by local state residents like Paul Harry, currently watching intently as his Super Easy Aces goes through a Nevada field trial at Primm Valley Resort. It’s an entirely new game with a special 54-card deck consisting of just aces, twos, threes, fours and jokers.

Derek Webb was a professional poker player who thought up the poker-style table game Three Card Poker. You’ve probably played it. All it took for Derek was a little know-how, some knowledge of basic math, and several years of blood, sweat, and frustration. Sounds about right for a gambler, doesn’t it?

Payoffs run from even-money up to 50 to 1 on a Dealer Match of jokers. It’s new, it’s fun and it’s simple to learn. If the game makes its way to Arizona, it will be with a house edge half that of Three Card Poker.

Webb tirelessly pitched his game to seasoned Las Vegas executives for a year before landing a field trial in Mississippi. Once it went live, he hung around the table and talked-up the game. He explained it in simple terms that even us gamblers could understand. And, the game has very easy rules, a reasonable win rate for the casino, and some payouts that make blackjack seem extremely boring.

Another local designer, Roy Ritner, helped invent Shanghai Poker and Pai Gow Express. He also brought the AGS-owned side bet Buster Blackjack to the state, lobbying casino managers for eighteen months before it showed up on a gaming floor. Players love it! Payoffs happen often, it’s inexpensive to play, and the house edge is very low. So, have you got any great table game ideas? $

Good for him, you might say. Or, great for him, since the game was enthusiastically accepted most everywhere and now sports more than 1,600 tables worldwide. And the royalties? At several hundred dollars per month they were strong and steady. Eventually, Webb garnered more than $20 million through a sale of

BET YOU DIDN’T KNOW … The King Of Hearts Is The Only King With No Mustache!

H

ave you ever looked at a pack of playing cards and wondered how the face cards got their design? Well, wonder no more because here is a little history lesson on playing cards. The four suits that we have today—clubs, hearts, diamonds, and spades—originated in France around 1480. During this time, the Europeans designed the face cards to represent the European Royalty. There are, however, many theories about which historical figures the cards represent. Here is a list of who it is believed is the face on each card: Playing Card King of Hearts Queen of Hearts Jack of Hearts King of Spades Queen of Spades Jack of Spades King of Diamonds Queen of Diamonds Jack of Diamonds King of Clubs Queen of Clubs Jack of Clubs

Historical Personage Charlemagne Judith (of the Book of Judith) La Hire, a famous French warrior King David Athena Ogier the Dane Julius Caesar Rachel (of the bible) Hector of Troy Alexander the Great Argine Lancelot

Have you ever looked closely at the differences between the Jacks, Queens, and Kings? If you look at the Jack of Spades, Jack of Hearts, and King of Diamonds, they are all a side profile, while the rest of the face cards are a full face. The side profile cards are referred to as “one-eyed.” In many games where the players are deciding which cards are to be made wild, the phrase “acey, deucey, one-eyed jack” (or “deuces, aces, one-eyed faces”) is sometimes used. This means that the aces, twos, and the one-eyed jacks are all wild. You may also hear the term suicide king which refers to the King of Hearts. It’s called that because he appears to be stabbing himself in the head with his sword. And, the King of Hearts is the only King with no mustache even though Charlemagne (who many believe is the face on the card) had a full mustache and beard! The axe held by the King of Diamonds is behind his head with the blade facing towards him. He is armed with an axe while the other three kings are armed with swords. Therefore, the King of Diamonds is sometimes referred to as “the man with the axe.” This is the basis of the trump “one-eyed jacks and the man with the axe.” The Jack of Diamonds is sometimes known as “laughing boy.” The Ace of Spades is sometimes said to be the death card, and in some games is used as a trump card. The Queen of Spades usually holds a scepter and is sometimes known as the “bedpost queen,” or sometimes she is called “black lady.” In many decks, the Queen of Clubs holds a flower. She is known as the “flower queen.” Now with this new knowledge, hopefully you will never look at a deck of playing cards in the same way again. You can impress your friends or, who knows, maybe know the answer to a question on Jeopardy. Until next month. I hope you play a winning game! $

Maybe his “nose so bright” will lead players to the $500 top prize! $2 Holiday Cash Drop – Santa parachutes in with a bag stuffed full of cash…up to $10,000! $3 Christmas Crossword – Players scratch off the letters surrounded by Christmas trees and win as much as $20,000! $5 Holiday 7 – This beautiful ticket and its $50,000 top prize glitter like tinsel on a tree! $10 Money Tree – A beautifully decorated Christmas tree of cash is the backdrop for this attractive ticket, but the main attraction is the ability to win 20 times on a single ticket (for a

top prize of $100,000) and a second chance drawing in case a player gets a little coal in their stocking. $20 $500,000 Holiday Countdown – Like a traditional Advent Calendar, a player can scratch one box on this super-sized ticket each day or, if they can’t wait, they can scratch them all to see if they have won up to $100,000! It is only available at participating locations. “Our Holiday line of Scratchers tickets is a welcome sign of the season,” said Gregg Edgar, Executive Director of the Arizona Lottery. “Our Holiday tickets are beautiful to look at, fun to play and wonderful to win. We expect players to catch the holiday spirit with these Scratchers, continuing our goal of increasing our base of responsible gamers and growing returns to our beneficiaries.” Players can purchase the new lineup of Holiday Scratchers at about 3,000 Arizona Lottery retail locations. Retailers and players can learn more about these games at AZPlayersClub.com and at ArizonaLottery.com. $ Scratchers is a registered service mark of the California Lottery.

Desert Diamond West Valley Casino Hosts Ceremony To Top Off Steelwork On New Facility

Caesars Entertainment’s Total Rewards Loyalty Program Wins “Best Players Club”

The Tohono O’odham Gaming Enterprise (TOGE) recently held a topping off ceremony for the construction of its fullscale Desert Diamond West Valley Casino. The event marks a major milestone in construction as TOGE begins to close out the final sequence of steel for the new casino building.

Caesars Entertainment Corporation, the world’s most diversified gaming and entertainment company, was awarded the “Best Players Club” by USA TODAY’s 2018 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards for its Total Rewards loyalty program. With more than 55 million members, Total Rewards offers access to exclusive experiences at more than 40 Caesars Entertainment properties. To learn more about Caesars’ rewards program, visit Caesars.com/Total-Rewards.

TOGE broke ground on the permanent, full-scale casino in December 2017 and construction is moving forward aggressively on the $400 million project. Once complete, the fullscale casino will employ approximately 1,600 people. The new facility will feature a 75,000 square-foot casino floor with Class III slot machines, poker and blackjack tables, and live bingo, as well as five dining venues, and other amenities. The facility is located on 54 acres of reservation land near the cities of Glendale and Peoria, Arizona. The Tohono O’odham Nation first announced the major casino project on January 29, 2009. After overcoming challenges from special interests, an interim casino opened to huge crowds on December 20, 2015. It currently employs nearly 600 people. The interim casino is continuing operations during construction and will transition to use as a warehouse after the full-scale casino opens. Edward Manuel, Chairman of the Tohono O’odham Nation said, “Today we celebrate how far we have come and how far we have to go in building a more prosperous future for the Nation and the West Valley. We will continue to work with our partners in the region for the benefit of all our communities.” Additional information about Desert Diamond Casinos & Entertainment can be found on their website at DDCAZ.com or by calling 1.866.DDC.WINS. $

SAMI’S SMACKDOWN By Sami Becker

LESS SMOKE IN THE CASINOS, PLEASE! An Open Letter From The Phoenix Area About Smoking In Casinos

I

received the handwritten letter printed in this article recently without a return address. The only information on the letter was a postmark indicating it originated in the Phoenix Metro area and was dated August 21, 2018. I understand both the smoker and non-smoker point of views. All establishments in Arizona are smoke-free except those on tribal land. I’m only curious to know what the proverbial tipping point will be and when the change happens to make all casinos smoke-free. A federal law? Public outcry? Class-action lawsuits? Another decade of patron complaints? As our readers may or may not know, some commercial casinos across the country (not on tribal land) have been forced to go smoke-free due to municipal or state laws. While I’m certain a forced change to a smoke-free casino will have impacted the casino’s bottom line in the short term, I think time will show that a smoke-free casino’s bottom line will not only rebound, but continue to grow as well. And, a casino can always offer smoking sections “outside” in climate controlled patios, as some have to get around the laws and still appeal to patrons who choose to smoke! However, if you are a casino patron who is in favor of smokefree areas then I implore you to exclusively patronize casinos with smoke-free areas and play in the smoke-free areas. Make your voice heard by voting with your entertainment budget. The fastest way to enact change in this country is to speak out with your dollars. If you, as a casino patron, are truly devoted to seeing more or larger non-smoking sections in casinos then seek out those casinos with non-smoking sections and play exclusively in them. Encourage all of your friends to do the same. In any event, there are strong opinions on both sides of this debate which includes patrons and casino management. I wish you luck and health! Without further ado, here is the letter. Dear Sami, For many years now, my husband and I have been enjoying gaming at casinos all throughout Arizona. However, the smoke, especially when crowded, spoils all the fun and limits our stay. It’s hard to believe there is no concern for how toxic the air can get in the casino when it’s crowded, especially with a lot of people smoking at the same time. Our family would also spend more time there if not for the smoke. It’s scary thinking about the health risks a person takes by being in smoke. Why

34 Arizona Gaming Guide | November 2018 | azgamingguide.com

not make it fair for smokers and non-smokers? How hard would it be to divide the casino in half and make it half smoke-free and half smoking? The best way would be to put up a wall to keep smoke out. On a recent visit to the east coast, we found some casinos to be smoke-free with a small smoking gaming room. That was the longest time we spent in a casino with nice clean air! P.S. Why be smoke-free at the restaurant areas, but allow smoking right next to the eating area anyway?
