PLAYERS TALK Q: I have been going to the casinos in Arizona for the past 6 years. I’ve read the Arizona Gaming Guide and understand that winning on a slot machine is already determined when I hit the spin button on the machine. I usually bet the minimum bets and sit next to people who bet more. When and if they win their winnings are larger than mine, but I seem to win more often and usually end up staying longer with money in the machine. Are slot machines programmed to win more often at minimum bet? My husband thinks that the probability of winning with the maximum bet is much lower than with a smaller bet. I’m not sure I agree with him that the lower the bet the more frequent the wins and with a higher bet less wins are experienced by a player. Judith J.—Sedona, AZ A: Hi Judith! Thanks for being such a loyal fan! We appreciate you! Slot machines are not programmed to win more at lower wagers than at larger ones. In fact, for any specific slot machine you might encounter anywhere on a casino floor, one of the two following situations will apply (which are based on a simple gaming regulation intended to protect all players from unfair games): Situation One: The specific slot machine (let’s call it Crazy Colossal Cash Cougars) allows players a variety of wagers from some minimum bet (say 30 pay lines at bet per line 1 for 30 credits total) to some maximum bet (perhaps 30 pay lines at bet per line 5 for 150 credits total). Changing your bet has no impact on winning or losing, how often wins occur, the size of bonus wins, the pay table wins, etc. Crazy Colossal Cash Cougars behaves the same regardless of bet. If you and your husband both play Crazy Colossal Cash Cougars, and both of you line up three Cougars, you’ll win 10 credits because you were playing bet per line 1 and he’ll win 50 credits because he was playing bet per line 5. Since he was playing at a bet which is 5 times higher, all his wins were exactly 5 times larger. That’s only fair. Gaming regulations support fairness. They exist to first protect players, then the casinos, and finally the manufacturers. Situation Two: The specific slot machine (let’s call it Jovial Jumping Jaguar Jackpots … I know, our fake slot names are weird, but it’s as a result of years of sitting in brainstorming meetings during our time working for slot manufacturers and trying to come up with machine titles and being forced to use alliteration, so we can’t help it!) allows players a variety of wagers from some minimum bet (say 30 pay lines at bet per line 1 for 30 credits total) to some maximum bet (perhaps 30 pay lines at bet per line 5 for 150 credits total). On this particular slot machine, changing your bet, however,
06 Arizona Gaming Guide | February 2019 | azgamingguide.com
does affect the game’s behavior. Jovial Jumping Jaguar Jackpots offers a progressive jackpot to players for lining up five Jaguars on a pay line at max bet, and only at max bet. Immediately, based solely on this simple rule, Jovial Jumping Jaguar Jackpots is classified as a game where a higher bet (specifically max bet) lets players win more. Nothing else changes, however. Other wins don’t happen more frequently or pay more. This game is also considered fair by gaming regulations because the more you wager, the larger the return to player will be over time. Or, perhaps even more confusing to players (as I have always suspected), Jovial Jumping Jaguar Jackpots has a game rule, clearly displayed on the screen in plain and innocuous English, “The more you bet, the more you win!” Jovial Jumping Jaguar Jackpots’ game rule is probably similar to other games you’ve played on the casino floor. Triggering a bonus allows players to spin a wheel to win several progressive jackpots. The more the player wagers, the more slices of the wheel award progressive jackpots. Let’s pretend the jackpots are called MINI, MINOR, MAJOR, GRAND, and INSANELY HUGE (again, that’s just us having fun with the names). Betting 30 credits qualifies players to have one MINI appear on the bonus wheel. Betting 60 credits qualifies players to have one MINI and one MINOR appear on the bonus wheel. I think you see where I’m going with this. By the time you get to max bet, all five (MINI, MINOR, MAJOR, GRAND, and INSANELY HUGE) all appear on the bonus wheel. For each bet level increase, one additional progressive jackpot is awarded. Intuitively, this should convey the message that the more you bet, the more you will potentially win in the moment and the more you will win over time. Let’s Pretend We Are A Casino Slot Director: You, as the Slot Director for Mesa Millions Casino Hotel Resort Conference Center Waterpark Family Fun Fest Bowling Emporium Car Museum Amphitheater Wooly Mammoth Petting Zoo Outlet Center & RV Park (Sorry, we can’t think of any more “titles” or “attractions” to throw into a casino name! If you have any more to add, please let us know.) are (surprisingly!) the property’s top revenue earner. Yes, the slot floor, of all the attractions and amenities at any casino, is the property’s top revenue earner. As such, would you provide a product to your patrons which encourages them to spend LESS money? Why would you, the Slot Director, in charge of making money (and making more of it every quarter), allow a product to be offered to your patrons which, when used, lets players spend less and make more over time? That doesn’t make any economic sense. As the Slot Director, you want patrons wagering more. Why? The house hold for slot machines is a long run mathematical advantage built right in to the slots you offer patrons. The more money running through the slots, as encouraged by a higher bet, the more money the casino makes. Imagine you are a sales person whose salary is 10% of your sales. The more you sell, the more you make. The casinos operate on the same principle. (Continued on page 8)
PLAYERS TALK (Continued from page 6)
That’s why slot manufacturers offer products encouraging higher bets. But those products have to remain fair even as they encourage higher wagers. To Summarize: I have a strong feeling the gist of your question, and the source of disagreement between you and your husband (By the way, hasn’t he learned by now that the woman is always right? Sorry, we couldn’t resist! No offense…) gets at a common misconception most casino players have when observing, for short durations in uncontrolled situations, their own play or other people’s play at a casino. “This lady was playing 10 credits and won $200, but this guy was betting $8 and won $150. What???!!!” This makes slot machines, and casinos, look like they are set up. Right? I understand and agree with the perception. Having been a player with no knowledge of how a slot machine’s computer program is designed and the gaming regulations supporting fairness in that design, we felt the same way. However, rest assured, betting more on a specific slot only increases the amount of money paid back over time or has no effect on the game whatsoever. Me and my team learned this once we started working for our first slot manufacturer some 20 years ago. Please understand, in the situations described above, a player will not see a win “more often” by betting more. There are very few game rules for slot machines where betting more makes a win appear more often. Those types of rules are difficult to design while making sure gaming regulations are still adhered to (i.e. not cheat players). Perhaps you are not a video poker player, but this simple game is a great example on the casino floor (now and forever) of a game where the more you bet, the more you win. The only way to win the largest payoff for a hand in video poker (progressive or not) is to bet max (most commonly a max bet of 5 credits). At max bet, a Royal Flush pays 800 to 1 (4,000 credits for a 5 credit bet). At any wager lower than max bet, the very same Royal Flush pays 250 to 1 (250 for 1 credit, 500 for 2, 750 for 3, and 1,000 for 4). Does the Royal happen more often at max bet? No. Why? Video Poker is governed by the same rules for randomness as any other casino game. The Royal will happen about once in every 40,000 hands over time, regardless of bet. Yet, you “win more by playing max.” At minimum, or a lower than maximum bet, a three-of-a-kind won’t occur more or less frequently than at max bet and, proportionally, the amount you win for that three-of-akind is the same regardless of bet. We hope this clears up your question! Good luck out there! $

PIT GAMES DISSECTED PART II Texas Hold ’Em
A
s mentioned last month, the poker room isn’t the only place to get Texas Hold’em action when you can play Ultimate and WPT in the Blackjack Pit. And, the house odds on the ante is only a bit higher than at Blackjack. The optional side bets do carry more of a risk, but you can win up to 50 to 1 for two red aces and even 500 to 1 for a Royal Flush on your final hand. At WPT 3x, the player must raise 3-times their ante after viewing their own two cards to continue. If they fold, any side bets still have action. The dealer will then expose their two cards and play (qualify) if they hold a pair or any Blackjack value hand of 11 points or higher. If they don’t qualify, all ante wagers get paid even-money, and the raise wagers are a push. Then, the dealer delivers a total of five community cards after burn cards and each player’s best hand with or without their own two cards will play. If the dealer qualified, they still have a hand the player must beat to get even money on their ante and raise wagers. Those bets lose if the dealer’s final hand is higher than the player’s. A tie is a push, just like at Blackjack. Any bonus bets are paid or taken based on the player’s first two cards and their final hand. Your simple strategy before seeing the community cards (preflop) is to play any pair and any two suited cards. If you hold non-suited cards, fold only when your highest card is 8 or below, and your lowest card is a 2 or 3.
Queens, threes, and twos. Raise 5x with a pair of fives through Jacks. With suited cards, you’ll always play. Go all-in (10x) with A-K, A-Q, A-J and with two cards both 8 and below. Raise 5x with all your other hands. With non-suited cards, go all-in (10x) with A-K, A-Q, A-J, 6 with a 7 or 8; 5 with a 6, 7, 8; 4 with a 5, 6, 7; and a 3 with a 4 or 5. Fold a 2 with a 3 through 9; a 3 with 6 through 9; and a 4 with 8 or 9.
World Poker Tour All-In
All other hands raise 5x.
For this variation, the dealer qualifying hand depends on your raise of either 5-times or 10-times your ante. When you raise 5x, the dealer will call with a pair or Blackjack value of 13 points or higher. When you raise 10x (no, it’s not really all-in), the dealer will only call with a pair or Blackjack point value of 17 or higher. Either way, you’ll get paid on your ante and bonus wager wins even if the dealer folds.
Yes, the strategy is weird. Follow it, and you’ll get a house edge of about 1.5%. Raise 10% on every hand, and the house edge skyrockets to 13.5%. $
This may seem strange, but since the dealer has a higher point total hand for a 10x raise, you can get away with weaker hands as a bluff because the dealer will fold more often.

BLACKJACK TOURNAMENTS PART II How To Win A Blackjack Tournament
B
lackjack tournaments are getting very popular. That's probably because the risk vs. reward is so attractive for players. For example, I can safely say that if you walked into a casino with $50 and bought in at a Blackjack table, it is not very likely that you would walk out $800 to $1000 ahead. But, if you take that same $50 and enter a Blackjack tournament, your $50 entry fee will get you really close to those amounts if you finish in the money. And, that’s probably why the Blackjack Tournament Players Community is growing so fast. Blackjack tournaments work like this; There is a qualifying round where five or six players are seated at a table and they all start with the same amount of play chips. A set number of hands are played and the player with the most chips at the end advances to the next round. The number of rounds are usually determined by how many players are entered. So, how do you win a Blackjack tournament? Most of the inexperienced Blackjack players think that the way to approach a Blackjack tournament is to bet big and hope they are lucky. While this approach will work once in a while, it usually will get you eliminated before the end of the round. In reality, to win a tournament, you will need a little bit of luck. And, if you follow some basic principles, you will give yourself a decent chance of getting some prize money. The strategy that I have had a lot of success with is to bet at or near the minimum for the first half of the round and see where that gets you. I have won quite a few tournaments because the dealer was hot and I was the only one left with any chips. There is, however, no one way to win a tournament. Sometimes you’ll win by losing the least and sometimes you’ll win by betting big. The main point is to be versatile and adapt to the situation. Here are six tournament tips that will help you be successful: 1. When entering a tournament, read the rules. Different tournaments have different rules so you need to know betting limits and number of rounds, as well as how many players advance from each round. 2. Don't bet big unless you have to, bet close to the minimum unless you have a reason to make a large bet. 3. Don't eliminate yourself, make the other players beat you.
18 Arizona Gaming Guide | February 2019 | azgamingguide.com
4. Leave yourself in a position to win at the end. 5. All the players at your table will tend to have similar results. If the dealer gets a Blackjack, everyone loses. If the dealer goes bust, everyone who didn't wins. If you are behind and are trying to catch up, the best way to do that is to bet opposite of the person you are trying to catch. If they bet $500 and you bet $10, if you both lose you gain $490 by only risking $10. If you are the chip leader, then you would bet about the same as everyone who is trying to catch you to maintain your lead. 6. Risk vs. Reward: If you are nearing the end of a round and are forced to make a ‘catch up’ bet, try and do it in one bet. It is better to risk one large bet than to try to make several mid size bets. You also want to wait until your bet will have the maximum effect; usually when the betting button has passed you so you can see what the other players have bet. Choose your battles wisely. Playing tournaments is a lot of fun and you can make some good money as well. The best part is that you are playing against other players and not the casino. While it is mathematically possible to win every tournament, it is extremely unlikely. The one thing that can not be measured is the fun factor! I always have a good time, not to mention all of the friends that I have made! I would encourage everyone to give Blackjack tournaments a try and join in the fun. $

SAMI’S SMACKDOWN By Sami Becker
HOW TO CUT THE TENSION And While The Proverbial Knife Might Apply...Don’t Use It!
I
would like to address a kind of unspoken awkward social situation that maybe you, or some of the readers of your column, have felt. Now, I need to set this up by saying when I go to certain casinos around the Valley, each one has two or three machines I like to try first off when I arrive. You step up to that familiar machine and somebody is sitting right next to it and the whole rest of that row and maybe even area is empty. First, they may have a foot resting or their arm on the chair you need. As they readjust themselves, you get that look and unspoken feel of complete disgust and the glare that you are completely crowding their style. This makes it hard to enjoy the game you sought out. Now, because I wanted to play that game, my options are A: play my game with that tension you could cut with a knife or B: try some friendly chat up to bring down that invisible wall. But why should I have to make an effort just to play my favorite machine? —M.E. Caldwell Hi M.E.! Thanks for writing in! You sound just like me! Warm, happy, empathetic, don’t want to step on other people’s toes, fun to be around, and much more, but you also want your game when and how you want it! You are not alone. I don’t think there is an unspoken social law at a casino. In my opinion, and based on over two decades of observation, a casino is essentially a free for all for any behavior, socially acceptable or otherwise! Except for casino employees, it seems the words “please,” “thank you,” or “excuse me” are not a part of a casino patron’s vocabulary while at a casino. I’d like to help by offering some advice from my own experience. When I encounter the situation you describe, I try to evaluate if the person sitting next to the slot I’d like to play is going to annoy me. This includes, but isn’t limited to, someone who is actively smoking any tobacco or e-cigarette product, is drunk or is in the process of becoming drunk, gives off an “I’m an A-type personality and can’t wait to talk non-stop to the nearest human being” vibe, or gives off an “I can’t wait to hit on you” vibe. I also try to evaluate if the person sitting next to the slot I’d like to play may leave in a short while. If I think they will leave, I’ll sit down. If I don’t think they will leave or they fall into the “annoy” category I described above, I’ll find another slot to play with the clear thought in my mind that it just wasn’t going to be my luck to win on that particular game today but it will be on another slot where my “conditions” are just right. Or, I’ve asked a friendly slot attendant to “reserve” the slot I want for me. I’ll tell them why I want to wait to play the game and they are usually very understanding, especially with smokers and drunks. Most slot attendants will keep an eye on the seats around my
34 Arizona Gaming Guide | February 2019 | azgamingguide.com
“reserved” game and track me down when the other player has left. In my opinion, you are more likely to win and have a positive experience during your next casino visit when you are in a positive and lucky mindset. This state of being entails several conditions in my opinion. First, you decide to go play when you feel like playing, not because someone else asked you to, not because you are angry, not because you are running away from a problem, not because you are desperate and chasing after money, but because you feel lucky, want to have some fun, and are willing to part with your entertainment budget. Second, once at the casino, your positive and winning attitude must remain in the forefront of your mind. Other people (including a family member or friend), employees, a bad buffet, poor service, a bug infested hotel room that smells of Fritos (been there, done that, unfortunately!) that derail your focus from your positive and winning attitude can have disastrous consequences regardless of the slot you choose to play. Third, keep in mind that if someone or something deters you from your “first choice” of slots, there may be a very good reason why. A different machine with a winning outcome may be waiting for you in an unlikely location! This has happened to me so many times it becomes difficult to keep track! And, finally, sitting down at a slot with an uneasy feeling about the person next to you and then playing with “tension,” as you put it, will lead to a tense result with that slot at best in my opinion (i.e. you will probably lose and lose a lot, fast). At least, that has been my experience across thousands of casino visits. You don’t have to agree with or take my advice, I’m only trying to suggest an alternative plan of action. I’ve found I am very successful when making decisions concerning events that are within my control and frequently struggle in situations concerning events which are not in my control. Where, when, how, and the mindset I have playing at a casino are entirely within my control. The person who glares at me when I sit down to play my favorite slot will remain out of my control whether I chat them up or not. If they are angry, or are resentful I sat next to them, I’m not going to be able to change that negativity just by smiling. Well, I do have a winning smile and a warm personality, so most cold or sullen people tend to brighten up when I’m around, but that’s their choice, not mine! I may show them the path, but they have to jump on the “Happy Sami Wagon” as it pulls into the station. I’m certainly not going to pull them aboard against their will! You shouldn’t either. I hope my advice brings you help and relief. I wish you a ton of luck! $

From the Association on American Indian Affairs There is an old story – and maybe you know it. An old grandpa, maybe it was a grandma, you know they were so old it was hard to tell. They sat down with their granddaughter, just to visit. But like any visit with the old one, there was always some talk that made you think about something important. “Do you know that each one of us has a fight going on inside of them?” the old one said. “A fight?” exclaimed the granddaughter. “Inside?” “It is a terrible fight and sometimes it is difficult to know what to do. It is a fight between two wolves. One wolf is angry and wants status and power or food and family that the other wolves have. The wolf is often alone and full of self-pity, guilt and feeling that it is not as good as the other wolves. This wolf is often in fear and acts out with arrogance, greed and ego.” “Oh,” said the granddaughter, “I feel that way sometimes.” The old one continued. “The other wolf shares and works with the other wolves to make sure the family and the young wolves are taken care of. This wolf is full of faith, truth, generosity, compassion and takes care of herself, too. What do you think about this granddaughter?” The granddaughter thought, looking inside at her own actions. She asked the old one, “which wolf will win?” The old one answered, “The one you feed.” The Association on American Indian Affairs continues to feed sovereignty, culture, youth and capacity.
