GILA RIVER CASINOS Three Destinations For Gaming And More

P

ersonally, I love playing in different casinos. I believe it is a great way to experience a new atmosphere, new slots, a different players club, and a great excuse to plan a visit to a place you haven’t been before. Gila River Hotels & Casinos are a great match for any casino enthusiast looking for the ultimate experience in gaming. Their three properties, Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino in Chandler, Lone Butte Casino in Chandler, and Vee Quiva Hotel & Casino in Laveen, allow players to access over 2,826 slots, 61 Blackjack tables, 21 other types of table games and 41 Poker tables (as of press time), in addition to a massive variety of other amenities. Plus, their new players club, called THE Card, combines all your gaming action into one card, which can be used at all of their locations. I challenge our readers to visit all three Gila River properties this month, not only to play some games, but also to delight in some of their many dining options and entertainment events. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves at the recent ABBAFAB concert on February 17 at the Wild Horse Pass Showroom and after the show, played on the floor for a while and then treated ourselves to a delicious dinner at Ling & Louie’s. We had a truly wonderful time! You can read all about Gila River Hotels & Casinos in this month’s feature story beginning on page 18. We hope you enjoy this issue of the Arizona Gaming Guide magazine. Please visit our Facebook at: Facebook.com/ArizonaGamingGuide, become part of our community and share your thoughts and experiences with others who also love the same casino games you do. You can sign up for our e-newsletter and find current and back issues of the Arizona Gaming Guide on our website at AZGamingGuide.com. Let me know what you think of this issue and have fun! Thank You!

PLAYERS TALK Q: I am curious who I get a hold of if I have an idea for a new table game? Kyle Placke—From email

If you decide to try your luck in Nevada, stick to the casinos in Laughlin or the non-strip casinos in Las Vegas as they cater almost exclusively to true casino enthusiasts and not to tourists.

A: Hi Kyle! Thanks for your question and for being our fan! There are several companies you can contact and pitch your idea to. They include: Galaxy Gaming Scientific Games/Shuffle Master 6767 Spencer Street 6601 S. Bermuda Road Las Vegas, Nevada 89119 Las Vegas, NV 89119 Phone: (702) 939-3254 Phone: (702) 532-7700 Web: GalaxyGaming.com Web: SGGaming.com

Q: There are multi-game machines available where you can elect to play 1 to 4 screens at one time and can select 1 of 4 games for each screen. You can play 4 screens of the same game, 2 screens each of 2 games, 1 of each game available or any combination of the 4 games you like. My question revolves around the individual screens. Does each screen play as a separate “machine,” does each game type play as a single “machine,” does it matter which game you selected for an individual screen as to the outcome of the spin, i.e., will you win if you were playing Buffalo but not win if you were playing Miss Kitty? Is there a Random Number Generator [RNG] for each screen or just 1 for all 4 potential plays? Is it better to play just 1 game on all screens, 1 of each or another combination? Can you please explain how these machines work and the best way to play them? Sue Csencitz—Phoenix, AZ

But we recommend you investigate the Cutting Edge Table Games Conference held in Las Vegas every year. Their website, TableGamesConf.com, lists a lot of table game companies who specialize in new games. You can also do it by yourself, form your own company, get a mathematician to analyze your game idea, get a gaming license, get your game approved in Nevada (or Arizona), convince a casino to offer your game on trial, etc. I hope this helps and best of luck to you! Q: When I started studying Video Poker, I realized I was not playing machines that would offer me the best E/R [expected return to player as in 95%, 98%, 99%, or even 100%] or variance [a measure of how volatile a Video Poker game is]. I understand that 8/5 [the Full House To Flush pay ratio] Bonus Video Poker can give an edge with the 4 of a kinds, can be just as exciting, and I can get full comps and cash back. But I'm having difficulty finding my favorite, Jacks or Better, with a 9/5 payout in the three casinos I visit regularly. Do I have to head to Nevada or will I find a machine in Arizona? Nick Takacs—From email A: Hi Nick, thanks for your question! If you want to find a “full pay” (9/6) Jacks or Better Video Poker game (meaning a player can expect to have close to or more than 100% of their money returned to them over time IF they play using perfect strategy), or even a 9/5 game, we’d suggest first looking for it in the higher denominations. You’ll be looking for $1, $2, and $5 Video Poker games typically found in a high limit slot section at your favorite Arizona casinos in the Phoenix and Tucson metro areas. Be prepared to bring an appropriate bankroll. $400 gives a player a chance (yes, only a chance) of hitting a Royal (worth $1,000) on a 25-cent Jacks or Better game. So, moving up in denominations means a proportionally larger bankroll requiring $1,600 for a $1 machine, $3,200 for a $2 machine, and $8,000 for a $5 machine just for a chance at a Royal. If you don’t find any full pay, or near full pay, Jacks or Better machines “locally,” the “smaller” or “out-of-town” casinos in Arizona do have some full pay or near full pay machines but they are hard to find and are disappearing fast.

A: Hi Sue, thanks for your question! We’ve answered your category of question before but based on your specific concerns, we thought it warrants further explanation and detail. Does each screen play as a separate machine? Yes. Each screen is its own machine (or game) with its own independent outcomes from spin to spin just like any other slot machine. If these slot machines didn’t behave this way, they wouldn’t be allowed in casinos. Does each game type play as a single machine? No. Each game type functions with its own game specific rules, symbols, bonuses, etc. But selecting one screen, or two or more screens of a single game type means the slot machine treats each game screen independently from any other game screen. Does it matter which game you selected for an individual screen as to the outcome of the spin, i.e., will you win if you were playing Buffalo but not win if you were playing Miss Kitty? [You are referring to the slot machine manufacturer Aristocrat and their line of Wonder 4 products.] Absolutely not. Game theme selection, Buffalo as opposed to Miss Kitty, where a game theme is placed on a screen, or how many of each game theme you choose to play, has no influence on the outcome of any one spin, individually or as a group. Is there an RNG [Random Number Generator] for each screen or just one for all four potential plays? In any Class III slot machine, by which we mean a non-bingo driven slot machine (called Class II) with a bingo card displayed onscreen, there is one computer operating system running the entire game. The operating system controls the lights, sounds, displays, the game (or games in our case), etc. but uses only one RNG. The RNG is initialized, or seeded, when the slot machine (Continued on page 8)

PLAYERS TALK (Continued from page 6)

is powered on. At any time in the future when a random number is needed to determine an outcome as the result of a wager, the operating system asks the RNG for a new random number. So, if you enjoy playing Wonder 4 with two screens of Buffalo and two screens of Miss Kitty, once you press the bet or spin button regardless of the bet you make, the operating system needs 20 random numbers. Why 20 you ask? Well each game screen has five reels. Four game screens times five reels makes a total of 20 reels. Those 20 spinning reels are 20 random events needing outcomes. Each outcome is independent of each other, so the operating system needs 20 random numbers. The one RNG in the slot machine gives the operating system 20 numbers to use in determining an outcome and identifying where each reel must stop. Once all 20 reels stop spinning, the operating system determines if any wins are on any of the four screens based on each of the selected game theme’s rules. Is it better to play just one game on all screens, one of each or another combination? The Wonder 4 family of slot machines, and slots like it made by other slot machine manufacturers, are intended to be played as a player sees fit. There is no “better” way to play this style of slot machine. Play one theme on four screens, two and two, one and three or all four mixed up. That choice is entirely up to each individual player. In terms of etiquette, don’t just play one game theme on one screen. We have overheard casino patrons watching players play Wonder 4 with one game theme on one screen commenting on how they should leave and find a “regular” one screen slot and let people who want to play four games at once play Wonder 4. Can you please explain how these machines work and the best way to play them? Hopefully we have clarified how multi-game slot machines work and you can now rest assured there is no “best” way to play them aside from personal choice. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something, and you can’t believe them, or they have no clue about slot machines and you still can’t believe them. As you probably know by now, we’ve designed, built, and tested slot machines and multi-game slot machines from the ground up, had them sent through their independent testing process, had them approved by gaming jurisdictions around the world across two decades, so we know what we are talking about. Don’t believe what you read or hear anywhere else regarding slot machines. There is far too much incorrect information being disseminated by so-called “experts” and “know-it-alls” in the general population. Thank you for your question. Thank you for being our reader and fan. We wish you a lot of luck and fun! $

TABLE GAMES By Al Moe

PIT GAMES DISSECTED PART III Texas Hold ’Em

L

ike other World Poker Tour table games, players receive two cards and make their best five-card hand against the dealer with the help of five community cards. Unlike those games, Ultimate Texas Hold ‘Em and Heads-Up World Poker Tour allow the player to make a raise preflop or wait and bet after the flop or on the river. World Poker Tour Heads-Up starts with an ante and an odds wager. Side wagers on Trips Plus and Pocket Bonus are optional. After receiving your two cards, you can bet 3x your ante wager in the Play spot. Your best strategy is to take the 3x raise with any pair except deuces, and also with A-x (any card), K-7 through queen, and Q-J or Q-T. Wait for the flop on any other hands. If you waited, you can wager 2x your ante after seeing the flop or wait and wager 1x after the river (final card). If you don’t make a wager, you will lose your ante and odds bets. Your strategy post flop is the same as for Ultimate Texas Hold ’Em, discussed below. Ultimate Texas Hold ’Em Like Heads-Up Texas Hold ’Em, the player must make two equal bets to receive their two cards. These are the ante and blind bets. Then the dealer places five community cards face down on the table and delivers two cards to each player and themselves. The player may then check, raise 3x, or raise 4x. The flop is revealed, then players may check or make a Play bet of 2x their ante. After the final two cards are exposed, players who have not made a Play bet can fold (losing their ante and blind wagers) or make a Play bet of 1x their ante. Finally, the dealer exposes their two cards and makes their best five-card hand. It must be a pair or better to qualify. Winning ante and play bets win 1-to-1, blind bets win according to the table’s chart.

way, Jacobson received his Ph.D. from the University of Arizona. Pre-Flop, raise 4x with any hand of A-x, K-Q down to K-5, Q-J down to Q-8, and J-T. You can also raise with suited K-3, 4, 5; Q6, 7; J-8, 9. Go ahead with the 4x raise preflop with any pair of 3’s or higher also, otherwise check and wait for the flop. On the flop, raise 2x with two pairs or better; a pair with one in your hand and one on the flop (meaning catching another likely helps only you) except deuces; or four flush cards with a ten or higher kicker (a card in your hand). On the river, raise 1x with a hidden pair or better. You can also raise 1x if you can count less than 21 cards the dealer might hold that would beat your best hand, such as cards to make a flush, a straight, or a higher pair/trips/quads. Those possible dealer cards are called “outs.” It takes some work to get this last part, but practice makes perfect. $

Best Strategy My best strategy for Ultimate Texas Hold ’Em came out way too long to list here. And, I must say, it’s not as powerful as the easier to memorize combined strategy of Michael “The Wizard of Odds” Shackleford and Eliot “AP Heat” Jacobson. By the

BLACKJACK TOURNAMENTS PART III Tournament Strategy

B

y playing a lot of tournaments, you start to develop skills and can overcome the luck factor to some degree. Personally, I get in the money in tournaments about once every four tries. So it is definitely possible to improve your chances of getting paid by becoming a proficient Blackjack tournament player. To help you on this journey, here are a couple of plays you can put in your bag of tournament tricks. One of the fun aspects of tournaments is that you sometimes have to think outside the box and deviate from basic strategy to come up with the best way to play a tournament hand. See if you can figure out the best play in this scenario. It is hand 16 of 21 hands in the semifinal. There are 3 players left. The top two players advance, betting limits are $25 minimum, $2500 maximum. Player A has $2,000, goes all in, and is dealt a hard 14 (10, 4) and stands. You have $3,900, bet $400, and are dealt a 10 (5, 5). Player C, with $4,200, bet $150 and is dealt 18 (10, 8). The dealer has a 10 up. What is your best play? Most players would play basic strategy and just hit their 10, a few players would double and take a shot at Player C to get the lead if all players win their hands. Neither play is the best move however and here's why! This match could be over on this hand. Player A stood with 14, if the dealer makes a hand, Player A is eliminated and you and Player C would advance. The best move is to split your 5s, and split again as often as possible. Double on any non-busting total, stand on any busting total, while keeping back at least $25. If you’re lucky you could get 8 bets working for $3,200. If the dealer makes a hand you lose all of those bets but it doesn't matter because the round is over since player A stood on 14 and is eliminated. If the Dealer busts, you have extended your lead over Player A and C with no risk at all. The extra chips would become quite valuable in the final hands of the round.

What is the best way to play in this situation? We are in the final hand and there are only two players left. Only one player advances to the next round, and betting limits are $25 min, $2,500 max. You have to bet first. You have $5,000, bet $2,500, and are dealt a 10 (8, 2). Player B has $5,500, bet $2,500, and was dealt a 20 (10, 10)! The dealer has a 6 up. Since Player B matched your bet, if you both win or both lose one bet, Player B wins the round. If you double down and catch a 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6, Player B can split his 10s and it doesn't matter what cards he draws because he will still have the high and low covered. It would seem that unless you win while player B pushes or loses (there is only about a 14% chance of that occurring), you will be eliminated. Consider this, since Player B can only split for an equal amount, ($2,500) if you double for less than $1,975 you can take away either the high or the low from Player B. You force player B to make a choice, if he stands on 20 and the dealer breaks, you win with your double down no matter what card you draw. If Player B splits and the dealer breaks then Player B would win, but you would win if the dealer beats you both. By doubling for less, you have increased your chances of winning the round from 14% to about 44%. Not a bad increase in win odds by just playing smart! $

Quarterly Gaming Contributions Generate $16.7 Mil. For AZ State Illegal Gambling Busted In Phoenix Ted Vogt New Director Of AZ Department Of Gaming The Arizona Department of Gaming (ADG) announced that statewide tribal gaming contributions generated approximately $16.7 million for the quarter ending December 31, 2018. This amount represents an 8.1 percent increase when compared to the same quarter of last year. “As tribal gaming contributions continue to increase, so do the benefits to Arizonans,” said James Ashley, Interim Director, Arizona Department of Gaming. “For the State’s fiscal year to date, tribal gaming contributions have furnished nearly $71 million to support the State.” The Arizona Department of Gaming will distribute quarterly tribal contributions to the Arizona Benefits Fund as follows: Instructional Improvement Fund/Education $ 8,346,117 Trauma and Emergency Services Fund $ 4,173,059 ADG operating costs $ 1,507,124 Arizona Wildlife Conservation Fund $ 1,192,302 State Tourism Fund $ 1,192,302 Problem Gambling $ 334,917 TOTAL $16,745,821 Per the Arizona Tribal-State Gaming Compact, tribes with casinos contribute 1 to 8 percent of their Class III gross gaming revenue to the state, cities, towns and counties. Currently, there are 24 Class III casinos in Arizona, which ADG regulates with Arizona tribes. In addition, on January 23, 2019, at approximately 8:30 p.m., the ADG led a multiagency law enforcement partnership to serve its first illegal gambling-related warrant of 2019. Officers from Arizona’s Department of Liquor and Attorney General’s Office (AGO), and the Phoenix Police Department conducted the search warrant on Toso’s Sports Bar & Grill and Real Poker LLC, located at 2401 W. Union Hills Dr. in Phoenix. Agents seized illegal gambling devices and proceeds and will submit reports to the AGO pending charges. Multiple suspects could face charges up to a class 5 felony. Specific charges could include illegal control of an enterprise, promotion and benefiting from gambling and possession of a gambling device. “We take our responsibilities of protecting the public, regulating the gaming industry and ensuring compliance with the Arizona Tribal-State Gaming Compacts seriously,” said James Ashley, Interim Director, ADG. “Business owners who participate in illegal gambling operations on their premises are subject to

28 Arizona Gaming Guide | March 2019 | azgamingguide.com

criminal investigation and risk forfeiture of their liquor and other business licenses.” The warrant resulted from ADG’s seven-month long investigation into a suspected illegal gambling operation. ADG’s ongoing collaboration with state and local law enforcement agencies and other partners has helped shut down dozens of illegal gambling businesses in Arizona in the last few years alone. Commonly located near residential neighborhoods, these illegal establishments often attract other criminal activity when left unchecked. If you have information about suspected illegal gambling anywhere in Arizona, please contact ADG. The ADG is proud to announce Ted Vogt as Director. Succeeding Interim Director James Ashley, Mr. Vogt will lead ADG in overseeing tribal gaming, pari-mutuel racing and wagering, boxing and mixed martial arts, and the Division of Problem Gambling. “It’s an exciting time to join the ADG,” said Vogt. “Tribal contributions are continuing to increase in line with Arizona’s healthy economy, Arizona is expanding live racing for the first time in nearly a decade, and we are positioned for another strong year of boxing and mixed martial arts events. Government essentially is a public service and a customer service-oriented business, and I look forward to building off the great work the agency is doing to help the State operate more efficiently and continuously improve for our stakeholders.” Director Vogt has an extensive background in state government, having served one term in the Arizona House of Representatives, as Governor Doug Ducey's first Chief of Operations, Director of Veterans’ Services, and Executive Director of the Arizona Corporation Commission. Most recently, Mr. Vogt provided critical leadership at a time of transition within State Parks & Trails as the interim Director. A former Captain in the Unites States Air Force, Mr. Vogt earned a Bachelor’s degree from Yale University, and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Arizona. March 2019 is Problem Gambling Awareness Month and ADG’s Division of Problem Gambling will host their 13th Annual Problem Gambling Symposium. This year's theme is "Bridging the Gap from Awareness to Recovery." The event is open to the public. For more information about the ADG visit their website at Gaming.AZ.gov or call their Phoenix office at 1.602.771.4263. $

SAMI’S SMACKDOWN By Sami Becker

MY BRAND NEW CARD WON’T WORK Casino Complacency & Why You Shouldn’t Put Up With It!

D

uring the week I get excited about going to my favorite casino on a day that gives me a point multiplier, or I can swipe my card in a kiosk for more bonus play.

Since the casino is usually more crowed on those days, I'm hoping my favorite machines are open. So, I sit down, put in my players card and it does not work! I try again, and the same thing happens. I even rub it on my pants to give it some electric magic and it still does not work! If I call for service, it takes a while for the slot tech to come and reset the machine. While waiting, I try the machine next to me (which I don't like to play) and my players card works! How frustrating this is not only to me but for others. So, after waiting a while, I move to another of my favorite machines only to have it happen again. My players card is in good condition, but the machines sometimes just won't take it. Why can't the casino have someone walk around and reset all the machine when they are not in use, so people can play and enjoy the rewards that they are promised? Love your column and waiting to hear what you think. Sharon Saltzman—From email Hi Sharon! Wow! That sucks! Annoying! Rant worthy! As you know, slots are designed to be tough. One requirement by a gaming jurisdiction is that a slot be shocked repeatedly with a 50,000 Volt electric charge! Once submitted to such a voltage, the slot machine must function in the same way as before the shock. Another requirement is the “beer test.” As you can imagine, this test involves liquid (preferably alcoholic if you are the person testing the game!) being poured over the game and determining if the game will still function without short circuiting. As a result, casino patrons rightfully expect a slot machine and all its components to be in tip top working order once they sit down. Although, this never seems to apply to the bet buttons! But having a machine malfunction all the time in the same way just indicates complacency on the part of the casino. Obviously, there is something wrong with the card reader on that slot machine and perhaps others on the slot floor. Card readers are not hard to replace. They are not that expensive. It doesn’t take long

34 Arizona Gaming Guide | March 2019 | azgamingguide.com

to remove an old one and replace it with a new one. How do I know? One of our staff members here at the Arizona Gaming Guide was a slot technician. For a casino to claim the machine must be reset and that’s just the way it is means either management doesn’t know about the problem, or (not sure if this is worse!) doesn’t care. Either way, you seem to have communicated about the problem enough, but perhaps you haven’t communicated to the right individuals. Perhaps try the Players Club and see what they have to say. Ask to speak to the Players Club Supervisor if you don’t get a reasonable answer. Or, ask to talk to the Casino Shift Supervisor and communicate your concerns to that employee. Hopefully, bringing this issue to the right person’s attention at the casino will bring results and relief. However, if it doesn’t, only you can decide if this inconvenience is worth your loyalty to the casino in question or not. I hope my advice brings you help and relief. I wish you a ton of luck! $

Does February March? No, But April May! It’s March—Happy New Year, ancient Romans! Welcome to the third month of the year—or, if you were born before 150 B.C., the first! According to the oldest Roman calendars, one year was ten months long, beginning in March and ending in December. It may sound crazy, but you can still see traces of this old system in our modern calendar: because December was the tenth month, it was named for the number ten in Latin (decem), just like September was named for seven (septem). So, what about January and February? They were just two nameless months called “winter,” proving that winter is literally so awful it doesn’t even deserve a spot on the calendar. Here are some more interesting (or funny) stories and facts about March. March 1: As the saying goes, March comes “in like a lion, out like a lamb.” That was certainly true on March 1st, 2007, when a detachment of 170 Swiss infantrymen accidentally invaded neighboring Liechtenstein when they got lost on a training mission. March 2: NASA astronaut Scott Kelly returned from space after one full year, setting a new record for the longest uninterrupted trip. March 5: Cinco De Marcho, initiates a 12-day drinking regimen for anyone who wishes to “train one’s liver for the closing ceremonies on St. Patrick’s Day.” By the way, this is why we wear green for St. Patrick’s Day. March 6: The Day of The Dude encourages participants to honor The Big Lebowski by “takin’ ’er easy all day, man!” March 14: Pi Day celebrates the annual occurrence of 3/14 with math jokes, pi-reciting competitions, and freshly baked pie (or pi!). March 17: St. Patrick’s Day turns the Chicago River green, and too many livers cirrhosis-damage-brown. March 20: The sun shines on the equator for the Vernal Equinox, giving us a near 50-50 split of day and night. March 21: Twitter founder Jack Dorsey inaugurating the social media site with its profound first tweet: “just setting up my twttr”
