EDITOR’S note
E
very new year brings changes in trends, styles, decor and more to weddings in Arizona. As the hot summers fade to a perfect fall, winter and spring, we love seeing the creative and one-of-a-kind weddings of real Arizona couples. From the natural beauty of Sedona’s Red Rocks to the unique and desolate serenity of the desert, Arizona offers
vast and variety venues and vendors for every couple. For me, this edition started off different than any other before it. I got engaged in the fall, and I was now in the same spot as other brides to be. What venue to pick? What style of gown? Fall or spring? All these questions swirled in my head as I started the wedding planning process. I can say from first hand experience that wedding planning can be hard, but it is so much fun. From selecting colors, decor and vendors to connecting with friends and family, it is a special time in your life. As I sit here and reflect on this new edition, I fall more in love with every piece of it. From the seven styled inspiration shoots to the three gown spreads, including a styled elopement, each page of the magazine is filled with 100% local inspiration. This new edition features 10 real weddings showcasing the simple beauty of love here in Arizona. As I look to the future and another amazing year, I leave you with one final piece of advice that I continue to remind myself every day. Embrace the beauty of the planning process and make sure your wedding is a reflection of your spouse and yourself. You are building the foundation for your lives together as a couple, and your wedding should show the world your style and personality! Happy Planning,
Vanessa

What’s the purpose of a rehearsal dinner? “The rehearsal dinner is an event designed to bring both the families together as one before the wedding,” says Suzannah Modzelewski from Old Town Tortilla Factory. It’s meant to unite the families and welcome everyone who has travelled from out of town. Elena Torres from J&G Steakhouse also adds that the rehearsal dinner works “to gather and appreciate those who will be playing a big role in the ceremony.”
Who handles the guest list? Typically, it’s the parents of the groom who host the rehearsal dinner. However, Suzannah adds that with the changing standards of modern times, either set of parents or another relative can host the rehearsal dinner.
What’s the timeline for booking a rehearsal dinner venue? “Elena from J&G Steakhouse says, “Around three months is the best time to book.” Although more popular spots may need to be booked out six months in advance. This allows for planning and decoration

rawing inspiration from the historical venue surrounded by blooming floral year round, Rackel Gehlsen created this romantic wedding inspiration. Situated in a quaint courtyard, the ceremony site features a mixture of cross back and oval chairs for a hint of Old World charm. Vintage cobalt blue and clear goblets paired with ornate white plates on the reception table. Silver
taper candles mix with votives cascading around floral centerpieces composed of white anemones, ivory and blush garden roses and an abundance of greenery. Watercolor accents complete the look on the three-tiered cake and Hacienda architecture on the invitation suite finished with a custom wax seal.

The happy couple settled in the sweetheart table adorned with amber goblets, rose gold chargers, burnt orange candles, and sprays of fresh blooms featuring muted yellow ranunculus and papaya orange poppies. An eye-catching

rawing inspiration from the monochromatic walls of the venue covered with crawling vines and pops of vibrant florals, the team created this bold bohemian shoot. The bride donned a corded floral lace gown paired with a show stopping floral crown made of vibrant pink roses and green succulents. The lawn set the stage for the intimate ceremony with a textured rug and
wooden lanterns serving as the altar. A vintage blush couch, funky furry chairs and a driftwood table added to the rich bohemian feel. The night finished at a sweetheart table accented with pops of purple. A stained glass cake along with colorful cookies completed the look.

Tips and Trends Let Rentals Transform Your Wedding & Reception TEXT BY: Vanessa Davis PHOTOGRAPHY BY: Steph Wahlig
DETAILS – BIG AND SMALL – CAN MAKE A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON YOUR WEDDING. Rentals are one of these major detail areas because they can significantly change the style, mood and overall feel of the party. Our wedding rental experts are sharing their favorite rental trends and things to keep in mind when selecting rentals.
132
ARIZONAWEDDINGS.COM #AZWEDDINGS
patterned and colored glassware for weddings.” With this new trend, feel free to mix and match colors and styles! Ginia Lucas of Y-Knot Party & Rentals calls lighting “the best way to transform a room,” saying it can “soften corners and illuminate the important aspects of the rest of the rental design.” Lighting doesn’t have to be fancy to make a statement. Overhead bistro lighting and lighted canopy frames set the ambiance of a space making it warm and inviting. Now more than ever brides and grooms are looking for unique ways to showcase their personality and style throughout their wedding. Other popular rental trends include mirror or chalkboard escort card displays, wooden harvest tables, table runners instead of overlays, and mixing textures to create your dream space.
BUDGET BASICS Get rental quotes early and realize you’ll probably need more items than you think. Don’t forget about the extra tables and chairs needed such as a buffet, cake table or a bar. “With rentals, just like the dollar store, small things add up,” says Lucas. “A place setting may only be $3, but with 200 guests, suddenly you’re at a minimum of $600 in rentals before any decorations.” That’s why she advises couples to make two lists: one is a “must have” and the other is a “want to have.” Whether you are more traditional or looking to make a statement, let rentals transform your big day into the perfect setting you’ve always imagined!
WHY ARE RENTALS IMPORTANT? Rentals can fill a space with texture, color and style by enhancing existing characteristics of the venue or creating something completely different. Rentals can transform a plain venue into your dream wedding. While many venues carry a certain amount of rentals, most of the time it’s very basic. “We have a lot of brides that come to us to pick out unique items to make their day special,” says Tara Mendoza of The Confetti Studio.
RENTAL TRENDS While every wedding is different, the common theme is a desire to have an amazing celebration space that truly encompasses the couple’s style. An emerging trend is a grand head table at the reception. “A beautiful and unique head table with special chairs becomes a fantastic focal point!” says Jennifer Dudones of Glamour & Woods. This trend stems from the popular sweetheart table by being more inclusive of the entire wedding party. Another trend that is here to stay is lounge seating. “Create beautiful areas for your guests to relax, socialize and have fun in. Lounge areas and lawn games are always a hit!” says Dudones. Make the lounge your own by adding down pillows, rugs and throws in your wedding palette. “Our favorite trend at the moment is vintage colored glassware,” says Mendoza. “We fell in love with photos on Pinterest featuring uniquely

The Wedding Guest List Who gets an invite? TEXT BY: Vanessa Davis PHOTOGRAPHY BY: Rachel Leintz Photography
THERE IS MUCH TO LEARN ABOUT PLANNING A WEDDING. As a bride-to-be you will be immersed in the wedding world and will be introduced to new, unforgettable experiences of which the most taxing will be creating the guest list.

THE GUEST LIST CAN BE AN EMOTIONAL PROCESS If you haven’t already begun the process, you will soon discover that compiling a guest list is a team effort. Yes, a wedding should be about the bride and groom, but it also represents the union of two families. It is important to take into consideration each side of the family when creating the guest list. With clashing opinions, stubborn personalities and emotions at stake, consider implementing a systematized method to create your guest list—such as, • The A, B, C, D List: Categorize the potential invitees respectively and eliminate from bottom, up. • A Piece of the Pie: Determine the desired number of guests and figure an evenly split percentage among all parties involved for equally mixed representation. Although in some cases when
@arizonaweddingsmagazine
delegating an allotted number of invitees for each party involved, splitting the shares equally may be problematic for two reasons: 1. One side of the family may be significantly larger than the other. In this case, think proportional. You’re better off allowing more seats to be reserved for the side with the larger family instead of having the smaller family struggle to fill the quota with distant family or friends. 2. Financial responsibility. Traditionally, the bride’s parents are financially responsible for the wedding; however, there are cases in
@ArizonaWeddings
which the groom’s parents or even the couple pays for the wedding. Whoever is contributing the larger amount has the right to delegate allotted number of seats to parties involved as they see fit. If the financial contributions are shared equally, A Piece of the Pie is a good objective method to enforce.
A PLUS ONE: YES OR NO? Being accompanied by a date to a wedding is commonly expected among single men and women; however, a couple is not bound by this
@arizonaweddings
general expectation. Here are a few examples of when or when not to extend a plus one invitation, but it is up to you! • Definite Plus Ones: Includes couples who are married or engaged. • Potential Plus Ones: Includes invitees who are in serious, committed relationships with a significant other. • No Plus Ones: Includes invitees who are single. Attending a wedding single is not the end of the world. Conversely, it could be an opportunity to meet someone new!
@azweddings HOW TO ENFORCE THE LINE 1. YOUR WEDDING INVITATION. How you address the invitee on the envelope should send the message loud and clear. Be sure the recipient

is able to distinguish who is being invited. Is the invitation addressed to a Mr. & Mrs. Smith, a Ms. Smith with an allotted option for plus one on the RSVP card, or simply a specific person? Be intentional. 2. YOUR WEDDING PLANNER. Involved in many aspects of planning a wedding, a wedding coordinator has various responsibilities— one

WHEN THE GUEST LIST HAS CHILDREN To host kids or not to host kids, that is the question. Some couples want to include children at the wedding because having the entire family present is meaningful, while other couples conclude involving children at the wedding could be a distraction. Regardless of your reasons, for or against, it’s advised either scenario is handled as follows: • With Children: Deciding to include children will require you provide a kids meal option. In addition, inquire about arranging crayons and coloring sheets to be placed where the children will be seated, to keep them occupied. • Without Children: For guests traveling with children from out of town, it’s common courtesy to provide child care resources. Whether it’s a referral or a web link to a list of certified caretakers in the area, make it easy for your invited guests to enjoy the wedding without a worry.
MAKE THE GUEST LIST EARLY Establishing a guest list early on is not only a priority, but it’s also a tremendous aid in the planning process. Crucial details revolve around the guest list—such as invitation orders, catering estimates, chair rentals, engagement

Cake Walk TIPS FOR SELECTING THE PERFECT WEDDING CAKE PHOTOGRAPHY BY: Steph Wahlig
LAST BUT CERTAINLY NOT LEAST, THE WEDDING CAKE IS OFTEN CONSIDERED THE STAR OF THE RECEPTION. This decadent dessert is more than just sugar, flour and eggs. It’s a delicious treat that can be its own work of art for your guests to talk about long after your wedding. Finding that perfect combination of flavors, fillings and frostings is possible. FROSTED FAVORITES The secret to a great looking cake depends on one thing; the icing. The icing provides the base for the other decorations and helps seal in the moisture and flavor of the cake itself. By far, the most popular icing for wedding cakes is buttercream, a creamy, spreadable icing made from butter and sugar. Another popular icing for wedding cakes is fondant, which is rolled out flat then draped over the cake to provide a completely smooth, firm surface for decorating. Made from sugar and gelatin, fondant has a distinct flavor that may not appeal to everyone, but cake designers can add flavoring to make it taste more appealing for your guests. If you love chocolate, try a ganache, which is an icing made of heavy cream and chocolate. Ganache has the consistency of a thick mousse, making it ideal for a filling as well as an icing. A lesser-known choice for icing is marzipan, a rolled paste of ground almonds, egg whites, and sugar that can be draped over a cake in the same technique as fondant. This is a good option for couples who don’t like the flavor of fondant, but love the smooth surface it creates for decorating.
FLAVORFUL FILLINGS While the icing creates a beautiful cake on the outside, it’s what’s inside that really counts. A cake isn’t worth the flour it’s made of if it doesn’t

taste as good as it looks, and the best way to give a cake flavor is with the batter and the filling. Wedding cake batter is typically a very simple flavor so that it doesn’t compete with the sweetness of the icing or the filling. The most popular batter for wedding cakes is plain white, but yellow and red velvet cake have been increasing in popularity. Chocolate is always a popular cake flavor, but it is seen more often in the groom’s cake as opposed to the wedding cake. When you meet with your cake designer, ask them for a sample of their most popular batter flavors. This will give you a better idea of the differences between each, and you’ll be able to select a filling that complements the flavor you ultimately choose. While the cake batter flavor might be plain, the filling is what gives a wedding cake its real personality. Filling separates the layers of a cake, and adds additional richness and flavor. It is usually cream or fruit based and depending on the number of tiers, many brides like to select two or three different fillings for their cake.
TASTEFUL TOPPERS Cake toppers today have a style and look that reflects the personality of

the bride and groom. Fresh flowers coordinating with the bridal bouquet are a traditional favorite, but there are many other options to make your cake as original as you are. Handcrafted gum paste or sugar flowers, a flowing ribbon created from marzipan, or a shiny spun sugar ribbon create drama when placed atop a tiered confection. Want something unique? Consider having a topper created just for the two of you. Incorporate your interests and hobbies into the design idea featuring figurines in your likeness. Then following the wedding, you’ll have a great keepsake and conversation piece. Once you know the terminology, it’s time to meet with your cake designer. The right professional will help you choose the best combination so you’ll have the wedding cake of your dreams.

What are your tips for grooms when picking out their suit or tuxedo? While there are many components to consider when choosing formal wear, Felicia says her number one tip to picking out the perfect suit or tuxedo is to go with your gut. “Learn for yourself what popular styles are out and decide if you want to go classic or modern,” she recommends. BEAUTY TIMELINE Having a beauty timeline will help keep every bride on track. Start prepping the skin 6-12 months before the wedding with facials and proper cleansing. Don’t do skin regimens too close to the ceremony, as this could lead to breakouts or other reactions. Alicia Neal from Beauty By Alicia advises to “consult with a professional to create a specialized timeline that will achieve your desired results.” The day before the wedding, brides should wash their hair and use conditioner on the tips of their hair only if they have dry, curly hair advises Denise Tanigawa from Vidogi Salon & Boutique. Otherwise, Denise cautions to “not use any hair products, because that will prevent the hairstylist from smoothly styling your hair.” This will help to ensure the brides can get maximum volume for her bridal look.

Lidia Win from Bridal4theWin offers her insight into having a positive bridal beauty experience. “I always tell my brides to prepare a touch up kit for the big day,” says Lidia. “Some items I suggest having on-hand are a lip color, powder, and lash glue.” Lidia also added that a good night’s beauty rest and using a hydrating moisturizer the night before will go a long way to help you look and feel your best on your wedding day.

Amanda and Jeff agreed early on that
they wanted their wedding to be straight out of a Disney fairytale, and a night none of their guests would forget. One of Amanda’s favorite moments of the day was walking down the aisle to Jeff.
After their grand sparkler exit, the couple and the wedding party headed to downtown Chandler to continue the festivities.
