Editorial Welcome to Gozo A super weekend is upon us with the Lejlet Lapsi (Notte Gozitana) activities going on in Victoria. A jam-packed weekend full of events for kids, youths, and all the family put together for you by the Ministry for Gozo. You can find the full programme in the pages to come. Due to the activities in Victoria, don’t be surprised with possible traffic restrictions getting into the centre as well as finding adequate parking facilities. Therefore we recommend that you pool together in as less vehicles as possible as well as make use of the side roads of Victoria. Access up to Arkadia from the main Mgarr Road
should be possible, but there might be some restriction from Republic Street (it-Tigrija) upwards. At Arkadia it is another weekend full of shopping. Summer collections continue to pour in while mid-season sales have started on spring collections on quite a few brands such as Miss Selfridge, Jennyfer, Peacocks, Piazza Italia and Tape à l’Oeil. Arkadia Foodstore has also launched a new issue of ‘the foodie’. Therefore don’t hesitate to drop in to collect your copy. Enough for now. Have a splendid weekend!

Temperatures are already starting to rise and the wintry plush green countryside has already given way to a more torrid brown crest. Fields around valleys across the island are now getting ready to bear the summer crop, with the sparse touches of green here and there reminding one of newer yields such as the growing wine industry. As the daily gauge runs into the 20 and 30 degrees Celsius’ span, we tend to seek the shores and
valleys for a lighter breeze. Xlendi valley and seafront become all the more popular with locals and tourists alike now that the holiday season is fast approaching. The best way to reach Xlendi if you’re in for an early morning or late evening walk is by car, passing through Fontana or Munxar and leaving it to wait for your return in the ample-spaced car park at the foot of the valley, as the bus service to this village at this time of year is less frequent than that
Feature during the peak summer months. However, if you plan on having a late morning, or are not bothered to watch the spectacular sunset from these areas, you might want to catch bus number 87 from the Victoria Bus Terminus that takes you straight to where this walk begins. The enclosed bay offers a serene sight in itself, even more so during the early hours or late evenings when fishermen trail the bay in pursuit of their daily catch, or return with what the sea would have offered. The cliffs on the right hand side, facing seawards, and the Ghar ta’ Kallorina as locals call the cavern hidden from the eye, but traced through the stonecut path visible due to the painted railing, offer spectacular sights at any time of day. We leave the bay and walk upwards on the main road, past Gozo’s most popular summer discotheque, almost up to Fontana, when an opening in the rubble walls on the left hand side of the road, in the vicinities of a bus shelter on the opposite side of the road, gives way to a winding upward lane. This, at times narrow, lane leads the way to Kercem, through neatly built country villas
and traditional houses in the Ghajn Tuta area, where a natural spring sprouts fresh cold water at any time of the year. Often young drivers manoeuvre their new cars to this spot to give them their regular shower and polish. Further up Ghajn Tuta lane you will end up in a typical village residential street, quiet, tranquil, where the only sounds are those of birds chirping on rooftops and possibly a few cats and dogs running around. Around this area there are commercial farms that are home to a good portion of the island’s livestock – you might come across heavy machinery, stacks of hay or even smell traces of the much-sought by-product so essential to the agricultural industry. Ghajn Tuta Street leads on to Pejpu Street, at the top of which we turn on to the left to what is now slowly becoming Kercem’s village centre. Before that, if you want to have a look at Lunzjata Valley, dividing Kercem from Victoria, all you have to do is walk the few paces to the bottom of Pejpu Street, turn around the last house and the evergreen valley opens itself beneath you, with the tiny chapel, dedicated to Our Lady your Gozo guide - 9
of the Annunciation, hence the valley’s name, peeping at you. Pejpu Street leads onto Orvieto Square, where the Kercem Primary School is and where the new Village Centre is being built, adjacent to well-kept sports facilities. The square is so named in honour of the Italian town the village is twinned with. If you proceed ahead beyond the primary school, past another few residential streets, a turn to the right brings another school in view, the St Theresa church school run by the Carmelite nuns, on Kercem’s main road, Triq l-Avukat Anton Calleja that cuts through from the main square, past the Madonna tas-Sokkors and San Girgor church, towards Santa Lucija and the Ghadira ta’ San Rafflu. It is to this area that’s best to proceed. The road eventually forks into two. The street on the left hand side 10 - your Gozo guide
proceeds to the Ghadira ta’ San Rafflu, while that on the left takes you to the hamlet of Santa Lucija. If you wish to explore another side of Gozo’s countryside it is to the Ghadira ta’ San Rafflu that you should opt. From here, past the traditional houses and beyond still cultivated fields, the winding upand-down lane eventually comes to ‘the pond’, practically sunk beneath a few trees, that gives name to this spot. However it is the spectacular views of Xlendi bay, with its tower dominating the entrance and the cliffs on the opposite side, that often steal the show here. Sunset from this spot is simply incredible! Although if
you plan to watch the sun resting from here it would be best to go by car, as natural light immediately vanishes with the huge red ball into the sea, and the area is not exactly very well lit. You can spend as much time here as you want, snapping away photos, but when it’s time to go back you can walk through Santa Lucija. You first have to walk
back almost until the last houses of Kercem, when another narrow lane on your left hand side leads you past more traditionally-built dwellings and straight into the Santa Lucija quaint and rustic square. This is one of Gozo’s best
kept secrets where thankfully the hand of progress and modernisation has been, to date, kept away! It is here that you sense the feel of village life, as if you’re stepping back in time to when life was more genuine and authentic. Back on the road, the street that leads straight out of the tiny your Gozo guide - 11
square in front of the Santa Lucija chapel takes you back straight onto Kercem’s main road, from where you can walk straight ahead towards the main square. Further down from the church, the left forked-out street takes you back towards Pejpu Street and Ghajn Tuta and you can retrace your way down towards Xlendi from here. BX8V[ deZc [gdb %,/%%V#b#

Grand Marnier Scented Prawns
Ingredients (Serves 2) 16 Fresh King Prawns 1 small onion 1 tbsp chopped garlic 1 tsp finely grated orange zest 2 shots Grand Marnier 1/2 cup tomato passata splash of white wine 1/2 tsp chilly flakes (optional) fresh mint and fresh parsley - finely chopped Olive oil salt and pepper Method Heat some oil, and gently cook the onion for about 8 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for a further minute. Add the orange zest and then the prawns. Bring up the heat and add the Grand Marnier (might flame - so be careful).Cook for 2 minutes, then add the passata and a splash of white wine. Cook for a further 3 to 5 minutes. Season to taste and sprinkle with the fresh chopped herbs. Serve with plain steamed rice or chips if feeling naughty!

Middle Eastern Rice and Chicken Stuffed Tomatoes
Ingredients (Serves 4) 4 large tomatoes 1 cup boiled rice 70 grams roughly chopped walnuts 70 grams raisins 250 grams chicken breast 1 tsp Cumin 1 tsp Harrisa (chilly paste) or some tabasco 1 tsp tomato paste (kunserva) olive oil salt and pepper 4 tbsp fresh mint - finely chopped parsley to garnish
Method Marinate the chicken in the cumin, tomato paste, harissa, a drizzle of oil, sea salt and pepper for at least an hour. Pan fry or grill the chicken until cooked well, then cool and roughly chop. Mix with the raisins, rice, walnuts and chopped mint, then season to taste. Wash, cut the caps off and scoop out the inside of the tomatoes. Fill with the chicken and rice mixture and serve.

Eggs Benedict and Bacon on Crumpets
Ingredients (Serves 2) Ingredients 2 Frozen Crumpets - Toasted or grilled 4 Rashers Bacon - Grilled 2 Poached Eggs For the benedict sauce 1 cup butter 2 egg yolks 2 tbsp cold water 2 tbsp lemon juice 1 tsp salt white pepper to taste
Method Melt the butter and set aside. Leave to cool for 5 minutes. Bring 2 inches of water to the boil, lower the heat and place a heatproof bowl inside the pot. Whisk the eggs and water until frothy, then transfer to the warm bowl. Whisk for 4/5 minutes until the eggs are thick yet light. Remove from heat, whisk for 30 sec then slowly drizzle the butter, whilst continuing to whisk. Add the lemon juice, salt and pepper. If too thick, add a drop or two of warm water. Spoon on top of the layered bacon and poached egg crumpets. Serve immediately.
