Editor’s Letter I want to start by saying thank you to everyone that has contributed to this, the last collection of 2017, I have the honour and the privilege of taking this magazine to the finest luxury sites, the homes of artists and the kind of drop sites that always seem to have an incredible audience of warm and receptive readers.

It has been an incredible journey across the last five year's discovering the people and places of Dorset and building a client base that has responded to each edition with a wholehearted enthusiasm and in turn friendships that have blossomed, this isn't a business but more of a joy for me and I would love to wish everyone involved, from photographers, retailers, hoteliers and of course my loyal and avid readers a very merry Christmas and a hugely prosperous New Year.

I would love to sign off with a little poem from the magnificently talented and incredibly cool 'Poet Laureate' at Bournemouth Borough Council - Myriam San Marco.

SAKURA I’ll start up slow.

My thoughts under cover of snow grasping at consciousness and vocal chords I don’t possess.

I stand here. Rooted.

Stretching my bud-finger growth to catch sunlight.

My low branches turn to the skies.

My roots dig deep.

My sap will rise.

It’s winter still.

I stand here, at the edge of the wood, let foxes make their home in the hollow of my back, invite migrating sparrows to nest in my shoulders and in the hole by my ankles, hedgehogs sleep. Near sunset, the boy crunches the hill to speak to me once more. He walks as if bees had told him their secret dance, all jaggedy footsteps and eyes bent out of shape. He rubs his hands on my bark, face pressed in knots and grooves, resting forehead to lips across the grain. He flings sentence after sentence at me, in dewspattered words, biting like African red ants, hands to fists, knuckles scraping.

I can’t talk back and his story hangs in the air between us.

A Passion for Pots Fiona Kelly - Potter

After a day spent potting with my Mum at adult education classes in Burton-on-Trent aged 12, I promised myself I’d go to evening classes when I got my first full-time job. So I enrolled for classes at Goldsmiths’ College London, which after three years became a part-time two year course.

Clay is a magical material with a myriad uses: from the gloss coating on the pages of up-market magazines to the heat resistant tiles on space craft. I use a stoneware clay that I fire to 1280C in an electric kiln. To start with the soft plastic clay for throwing or hand building, and end with a dinner service or a mug you can use daily for years gives me huge pleasure. I like everything I make to have a use, though I thoroughly appreciate nonfunctional ceramics and sculpture made by many other ceramic artists.

My work has slowly evolved over the years. All my fish decoration came about from thinking my original squared-off dishes looked like sardine tins. New designs have been added following commissions and taking part in exhibitions with a specific theme, like Purbeck Art Weeks. Coming up with new ideas is often a light bulb moment.

I make a very broad range of pieces, from casseroles to ceramic button greetings cards, with different designs – fish, grapes, hearts and glaze on glaze decoration.

Having met a soap maker who asked me to make some soap dishes for her they are now a firm favourite; the small amount of clay involved allowing me to experiment with lots of colour and designs. For the latter I use manufactured colours, but on my production ware the slips for colour and glazes are all mixed from the raw materials.

Forty years on my love of clay continues – after moving to Bournemouth, having four daughters and working in tourism and construction I’m now able to indulge my passion. So in 2013, having sold my pottery in Wareham for twenty years, when the opportunity arose to take over the Creative Gallery in St John’s Hill, Wareham, we took on the challenge. We now run the gallery as a co-operative with painters and other makers allowing all of us making time while taking turns to serve the public – often creating while on duty. Doing fairs and working in the gallery keeps me in touch with the public. I also sell at Rums’ Eg in Romsey and the Jill Rousseau Gallery in Bideford.

The Creative was established in 2005 by Cliff and Graham Towler who remain as our resident artists. Wendy Nutt is our resident silversmith, with the jewellery of Rose Hatcher and Gill Smeulders regularly exhibited. Linda Rowe creates the fused glass always in stock and Caroline Walker is our photographer with cards, prints and framed images. Rosemarie James who makes earthenware pottery is the other resident potter and we have a programme of guest makers, with monthly changing exhibitions.

Digital Lockdown & Heavy Fines as Data Protection is Overhauled General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)

A concerning number of individuals and companies are still unaware of the looming changes to data protection laws throughout the European Union and the United Kingdom (regardless of BREXIT). As of the 25th of May 2018, everyone must strictly comply with the new regulations or face significant fines. The most crucial changes to be initially aware of are:

Any companies or individuals who regularly handle large amounts of data, whose core activities consist of processing personal data or such like must have an independent DPO reporting straight to the highest level of management. In a positive change record keeping will become an internal matter but may be inspected at any time.

Heavy Penalties

Enshrined Rights For ALL Individuals:

Any company or organisation found to be in breach of the GDPR will be liable to a fine of up to 20 Million Euros or 4% of their annual global turnover, whichever is the greater. For companies such as Google, this means fines up to 35 Million USD. For your average high-street business then technically fines are imposable up to 20 million euros. Now there is a tiered approach to fines but it is still significant for small businesses. By example simply not having data records in line with the requirements triggers a 2% of the turnover fine. A startling change.

A Right To Access All Personal Data:

The Flipping of Consent Long terms and conditions, illegible language, jargon and ‘legalese’ are gone. Any requests for personal data and its use, storage and passing on must be clear and obvious and must now clearly state the purpose for holding the data. More crucially ‘opting out’ of marketing is no longer allowed. Unless an individual positively ‘opts in’ then an offence is committed. Worse still for those companies with mines of data, marketing address, and mail outs unless ‘opt in’ can already be proven every single individual must be contacted and actively opt into receiving future communications.

Notice of Breach One of the most simple, but strict changes. If a breach of the regulations occurs then you have only 72 hours to fully notify the relevant body starting from the moment you are reasonably expected to know about the breach.

You must also notify every single individual that may be affected without undue delay.

The Extension of Scope Companies that have offshore registrations, investments or dealings will now, at all times, be caught by Data Protection. The new legislation is ‘extra-territorially applicable’ meaning that if you conduct any processing of any data that relates to any individual in any European Member State you are bound under the GDPR regardless of the registered nationality, location or dealings of your company.

The right to know what data is held about you, why it is held, for what purpose it is being used and for copies of all data to be provided, free of charge, in an electronic format.

The Right To Be Forgotten: To have all personal data permanently erased, to stop any further use of personal data and to potentially halt all processing by third parties. This does not, however, outweigh any public interest in retaining the data such as criminal records, debts etc. and there are complex rules to consider.

A Right To Data Portability: The right to receive all of your personal data, in a standard computer format commonly used by the wider public, and to have that data transmitted to another company or controller at will.

This is only a very basic summary of the 88 page, 99 Articled Regulation from the European Union. Small to medium businesses are expected to take 6-8 months on average to be able to fully comply with the regulation.

Larger companies can expect the process to take in excess of a year. Due to our modern, data driven society, this poses a significant problem and threat to business owners. A Home From Home Home Farm House - Bed and Breakfast - Wimborne St Giles A story of determination and dedication .

How did it all start for you guys, I hear the house was in a state of disrepair and you were taking a huge leap of faith on this project?

This is a really long story, so I will try and give you the abridged version, Graham moved down to Dorset in May 2013 as his Mum (who lives in Poole) had health issues; we decided to relocate in order to care for both parents and I moved down in August of the same year. We moved into a rented cottage in Wimborne St Giles (not knowing the area at all) in Sept 2013 and started looking for work (Graham was concentrating on getting his first book finished and published). I had over 25 interviews and couldn't find any work in the area. We were living off meagre savings which were running out fast; by Aug 2014 we had just 1 month's rent left - we were on the brink of being homeless and bankrupt. I went to see Lord Shaftesbury and asked if there was a property on the estate that would be suitable as a B&B and if so would he allow us to run it as a business; incredibly, he said yes to both and we viewed 'Home Farm House'.

Within 4 weeks we were in… the house was considerably unloved, ivy growing through rotten windows, damp invading walls, no discernible decor, and just 1 bathroom. Now we needed to set about a major renovation project - with no money!!! I exhausted all lending options, unfortunately, traditional lenders do not lend on ‘potential’ (how very short-sighted!). So family and friends rallied around and we were able to make a start, ever so quickly we ran out of finance again… The builders walked off the job and we were in limbo, too far along the project to give up, but nowhere near ready to open. Just as we were racking our brains as to how we could finish the project and get open so that we were earning, an email pinged in from a government-backed lender that offered a low interest, no credit check (crucially!!) business start-up loan - we applied and were granted the funds to finish the project.

Who styles Home Farm, the colour, and feel are so sympathetic with the world you have on your doorstep?

I sourced all the furniture from local vintage suppliers and upcycled preloved pieces. I then approached Farrow & Ball and they sponsored all the paint and wallpaper for the whole project; a friend gave us beautiful curtains on 'permanent loan' along with a few other antique pieces and we opened for business on 13 June 2015. All the interior design has been done by me; a consultant came from Farrow & Ball and together we chose colours that are sympathetic to the era of the house, and we felt that we needed to do it justice, show it some care and attention and bring it back to life. If we had used all new furniture it just wouldn't have had the same feel, every piece has its own story to tell.

You have achieved so much in the last three years, the place is stunning, what has been the happiest moment in bringing all of this together?

For me, the happiest memory was the first review on Trip Advisor; as it validated my belief and vision. The reviews have since been consistent (From our first review to the latest 179th review). Which means we must be doing something right! However, we are not complacent and ensure that we deliver above and beyond every single day.

We can see from your welcome pack there are so many differing places to hike to in your beautiful part of the world, do you have a favourite walk in the area?

There is a 3-mile circular walk from HfH, through the open fields of the old dairy farm into a wooded drover’s trail that changes with the seasons, bluebells in the spring and gorgeous russets in the autumn. This then opens onto the downs with views towards the Chalk Valley, you then drop down and walk through the village of Wimborne St Giles along the River Allen and past the church and village green. The variety of animals on this walk is as varied as the landscape, ranging from Red Kites to deer and hares on the downs and odd owl at dusk and the resident trout in the river.

The home cooked food is such a wonderful part of the B&B’s experience, who is the chef of the home?

It is a truly joint effort; Graham bakes all the bread daily, I cook the breakfasts and bake the cakes and we both bake the biscuits for the guest rooms. Wherever possible it is homemade or home-grown, from the jams and marmalade to the tomatoes! We source all of our ingredients locally which has a massive impact on the quality of the flavours especially of the bacon and sausage from a local butcher (Clarke's in Sixpenny Handley) and the free range eggs from just across the village.

Mosaic Motel

An eco art retreat

David Nicholls works from his studio located on the picturesque Isle of Portland in Dorset.

His studio is located in the beautiful and tranquil gardens of his business, White Stones Café gallery in Easton village.

Over the past twelve years since moving to Portland from Weymouth and setting up White Stones, David has tried to find time in his studio and pursue his passion for art. This has not proven easy as the cafe and gallery take up a lot of his time. Despite this over the recent years, he has managed to take part in exhibitions, create new work and complete several private commissions.

This year, exciting things are ahead for David’s business and his artwork as he says goodbye to his old studio and replaces it with a brand new contemporary designed art studio with the addition of three Eco holiday lets situated alongside. This ambitious new project is to be called White Stones Art Retreat and is due for completion in September 2018. It will give David an all year round space to produce his work from and also run workshops. This exciting new addition to the existing café, gallery, and gardens will give visitors the opportunity to take part in various courses run

by David and other invited artists.

David aims to make it into a cosy artistic bolt hole, the perfect place to escape and unwind, to explore and maybe try something new and take part in one of the workshops.

David’s artwork has changed dramatically over the years since achieving an HND in sculpture and design as a mature student at Weymouth College. Early work saw him producing unique hand finished sculpture in a variety of materials. The sculptures ranged from one off hand carved original pieces in stone and wood and small editions cast in bronze and aluminum to large pieces for a garden setting.

His early work encompassed themes such as growth, vitality, and nature using carving, modeling and casting techniques whilst exploring a diverse variety of materials.

Time spent living in Spain and a trip to Barcelona, before starting White Stones café gallery, has had a major influence in his current style of work and a new direction in his artistic language. A move away from direct carving and sculpting in three-dimensional form, saw him start to explore the idea of sculpting textured relief’s and integrating found objects within the work. This has since seen a shift to using mosaic and found objects in his work. David strives to produce work that is tactile, visual and stimulating to the human senses. He is open to discuss commissions and workshops with a potential start in September 2018 when his new studio and White Stones Art Retreat is complete.

From the indulgence of the cinema room to the monastic calm of the hi-fi room, the open and elevated showroom and the continuous (by my request) clarified streams of music being played to the heavens is one of utter joy to behold, the lucidity of the speaker systems positioned just so, the calm and clean layout and the architectural acoustics create a vacuum of crystal clear sound and allow the incredibly well engineered, beautifully designed turntables, the valves and vinyl to cohabit and create this science of sound… reaching into your body and raising the hairs on your arms, neck..legs…

Alex has built an amazing reputation, backed up by the incredible staff and the team that are passionate about delivering the right product to the right area.

The Girl on the Spectrum

by Hannah Quinton My name is Hannah. I am a 24 year old girl.

I currently reside in the beautiful county of Dorset. I enjoy walking on the beach; exploring the county’s vast woodland areas and drinking cloudy cider whilst listening to local bands cover popular tracks. I am interested in fashion and I model for local photographers when I am not working part time as an Optician. Oh yeah, one more thing, I have autism.

I was diagnosed with ASD (autistic spectrum disorder) just over a year ago. Some people will think this is quite old to be diagnosed with a condition that is present from birth.

Girls and women on the spectrum are often diagnosed later or misdiagnosed as they can present differently to boys and men. Girls often mask their symptoms so it is less obvious that there is something different about them.

I was refused a referral for an autism diagnosis earlier in life from my GP several times. I have now been diagnosed with ASD by two different healthcare professionals, once privately and once on the NHS so that they could confirm my diagnosis after refusing to refer me.

My diagnosis was a long and difficult but necessary process. That is why I have made it my mission not only spread awareness of autism, but spread acceptance and understanding. I no longer want autism to be an enigma. I am a person first and my diagnosis second. That is why getting a diagnosis can be so hard because we are all unique points on a vast spectrum.

Despite the best efforts of organisations like the National Autistic Society (If you don’t know what autism is or would like to know more about it then visit their website, they have some great resources) the vast majority of people still don’t know what it is like to actually have autism.

I hope that by writing about my experiences and my life, that I will encourage people to find out more about autism and that eventually the harmful stereotypes like “rainman” will melt away (yes, that was a metaphor. Some people with autism can even do sarcasm as well.). I have spoken out on my local radio station and I have started an instagram account specifically to document the challenges and highlights of living on the spectrum. A naive young child with a huge dream and craving for fame seems so far away from how I see myself and my music now. Back then fame was the ultimate goal and countless hours were spent dreaming about having hits in the charts with millions of fans screaming my name at sold out concerts, but in the last few years, global success had subsided in the back of my mind.

Music Is a way of expressing my emotions and views in a way simple words cannot, to bring new and amazing people into my life and put fresh and exciting opportunities on the table and most of all to help me grow and develop into the person I've always wanted to be.

It all started around six years ago with entering and competing in various local and national talent competitions, preforming to backing tracks. At the age of thirteen I decided to pick up an instrument; the ukulele, to give me the resources to write and preform my own material and that's what kickstarted my songwriting journey.

I started to attend various local open mic's and began tinkering around with different genres and styles in an attempt to find my own niche, as I improved gigs started to trickle in and soon I was being asked to perform at many charity events, fetes, festivals and showcases and I started to get recognition as an artist.

In the last year I have developed as a musician and evolved my own sound and style that represents me and my personality through my music, I'm lucky enough to be gigging most weekends doing private parties, weddings, festivals, and events solo and duo , I have also been working on new material which I hope to release in the not too distant future.

Recently I have written a song on the topic of domestic violence and have decided to put on a music event and charity single release to raise funds for a Bournemouth women's refuge attached to BCHA in October, I am very lucky to have eighteen of the best local musicians supporting my event (Annabelle charity single release) on Saturday 14th of October at the brilliant music venue Chaplin's cellar bar in Boscombe, 12-8.

Local feltmaker, Rose Hatcher, started ‘Handmade for Christmas’ in 2012, as ‘a bit of a laugh’ and, although it’s still an indubitably jolly affair, it has gained a seriously serious reputation for the huge diversity and the excellence of the work on display, not to mention the very warmest of welcomes. When I started to write this I began with the standard... 'born and raised in Dorset, started sculpting in the 80's, sold on the South bank etc'...

But then I stopped. Whilst this was all true, it didn’t explain why I make the things I do. To be honest I’m not sure if it is even possible to do so...

I hate to go in to detail when describing an individual piece of work as I hope they speak for themselves and that the observer can interpret it to suit their need or mood. This collection of work is about expression and the world we live in. The physical and mental state we all experience in one form or another. All the same, but each one of us unique.

There has always been a ‘pulling’ inside me drawing me towards the darker side of life. If it’s a taboo I’m interested, if it’s strange I’m fascinated, (if I’m not supposed to do it, I’ll probably do it anyway?). I see the disturbed and broken, blurred into the background unacknowledged by the mainstream. I am odd and I like it that way.

One of my earliest memories was that I held the belief that my entire family transformed into monsters once I had been put to bed for the night. I would get up in the night and hide in my wardrobe with my one eyed pink bunny wishing them away. Some nights I would feel brave and sneak down the stairs to try and catch them out. I only ever caught the one...

We all have a measure of darkness that bubbles under our skin, caused buy something as slight as a glib remark to something as deep as trauma and depression. As an artist I am lucky to have an outlet for my feelings and experiences, a way to express my inner thoughts without the use of words. I show the scars and bruises, all the cracks and flaws that never usually show on the outside, the raw emotion of the moment, erupting through to the surface. A surreal derelict world where everyone has merged with their surroundings and are slowly decaying.

So returning back to the ‘standard’ there is no standard. I had a traumatic childhood, and I was a tearaway youth with addiction and obsession taking its toll but all the way through it I created, made and matured. Two children later and a muse worth his weight in gold I started to take my work seriously again.

Now I’m a grandmother and as much as I dislike getting old I do like getting creepier.

My creations can now be found all over the world thanks to the wonders of the internet and Social Media.

I am thankful and often surprised that they even sell at all.

Christmas Open Studios Tucked away in the heart of Westbourne are the studios of ceramicist Charlotte Miller and silversmith Emma Leonard.

Graffiti has always been a dirty word in the public realm, but over the last decade ‘graffiti art’, or its most recent incarnation, ‘street art’, has become celebrated as the biggest art movement the world has ever known. Bournemouth based creative agency, Paintshop Studio is one of the innovators in this fast growing movement having created a rich variety of super-sized graphics and graffiti design for major world-leading brands that include Adidas, Facebook, Microsoft and PlayStation and local projects that include the much loved ‘History of Shaping the Future’ mural on Lansdowne Road and St Swithun’s underpass artworks.

Paintshop Studio was established in 2007 by artist and creative director Rick Walker (or known in the graffiti world as Ricky Also). “What Paintshop does that’s different to any other creative studio is combine the energy and passion of graffiti art and mix it with the professionalism and considered approach of graphic design. My background is in graffiti art, this has always been a passion for me and led to an extensive career in graphic design, working for many years in some of London’s top agencies. Graffiti art has been credited with rejuvenating huge run down areas and a created a new form of tourism in areas like East London, Bristol and Brighton.

Paintshop Studio specialises in bringing their unique creative approach to companies and brands, whether they are looking for graphic design to help with their communications, or creating amazing interior design for their offices, restaurants or bars. “The variety of work we produce keeps us excited and motivated.

We never know if we’ll be designing a range of T-shirts, printed brochures or a four storey mural. One of our favourite projects this year was to give the iconic brutalist architecture of the Grafton Street car park, on Worthing sea front, a much needed facelift. This was a massive project, designed to create something spectacular from a run down building in the centre of Worthing.

It now stands as the UK’s largest mural”.

Paintshop Studio has another spectacular project in the pipeline for Bournemouth called the Upside Gallery. Their plan is to take the section of Bournemouth’s Central Gardens, underneath the Wessex Way and turn the ugly grey concrete pillars into huge canvases, inviting some of the UK’s most talented artists to help them transform the space. “We have been talking to Bournemouth Council about this idea for some time now and they are being very supportive as they can also see the potential, we’re currently looking into funding to be able to bring this idea to life and are aiming to have it complete for the public by spring of 2018”. In just a year and a half The Purbeck Artisan Yard has gone from strength to strength. Nestled in the back streets of Wareham, inside this rustic industrial old building you will find a plethora of wonderful local artwork, including paintings, illustrations, driftwood cottages, French finds, jewellery, textiles, printmaking, glass, upholstery, vintage wares, pottery, Artisan candles and award winning fudge.

The Artisan Yard runs as a co-operative with its friendly talented resident artists taking it in turns to run the shop.

Guest artists are invited to exhibit their work for a month on the guest walls, ensuring a new and continually varied exhibition of work on display here.

Utilising the huge reclaimed wooden table the residents also run various popular fun workshopsn in Drum Lampshade Making, Drink & Draw evenings, Harbour Workshops, Upholstery and Glass Fusing. WARNING:

MR URCHINS CULTURAL WASTELAND Up until now, Mr. Urchin has remained an enigma. His artistry style is exempt from pigeonholing, an undefined mash-up of ideas, a collaboration of classics and modernism with the odd spray can be thrown in. Mr. Urchin works in a shed by the sea, his life void of the chaos of the city. However, within the shed and Urchins mind, the chaos is unleashed.

His current work, recently described as visual diarrhoea. His work isn’t without social comment and is refreshing in these politically correct times. His work is like an acid trip of thoughts, news and current affairs hit your senses on many levels.

He challenges you cerebrally and stimulates you visually with colour.

I recently met with the mysterious Mr. Urchin, not an exceptional eccentric as I had imagined. He is a softly spoken, quite unassuming, northern bloke. His paint-covered clothes and spray painted nails are the only giveaway that he paints at all. He laughed as he apologised for the general debris scattered around the garden leading to his shed, a shed next to a greenhouse. This wasn't the windmill of the Moulin Rouge where Toulouse Lautrec had found his muse, but a poorly built 10 by 8 wooden shack. This was on the outside, inside it looked like rainbow vomit. Old tables, filing cabinets, 4000 mugs, and canvas, after canvas precariously leaning against each other. A table lamp swinging upside down to provide light and some fake skylights spray painted on the ceiling. I felt that I was tripping inside the mind of a man who had a lot to say - I asked Mr. Urchin if he could give me an insight into his work

“My paintings have evolved over this past year. I was flitting in between different styles and the work had no consistency. One thing is consistent though and that is the faces of people, the human condition or victims of progress depicted in my paintings. I’m not holding back with these, it’s how I see things in a misinformed chaotic world so I decided to just smash all styles on to one canvas and see what happens. To some, it might appear as visual diarrhoea but I like it.”

Keen to know where the world could embrace this work I asked Mr. Urchin if he had any exhibition plans in the pipeline. “ The Amuse Yourself to Death Exhibition opens in October and will take place in a couple of venues, an alleyway and a few walls in Weymouth, bit like an underground arts trail. I and fellow Artist Felix (Puffin Art) thought maybe we could do this with a little help from a couple of amazingly talented artists. We intend to showcase some of the more underground kind of art in Weymouth. Café Oasis will be host to a couple of Artists, also The Carthorse Gallery will be involved and I will post updates on my Instagram and Facebook page as and when things develop.” arkadia magazine

Paul Barron Two years ago my wife and I decided to move from North London to Swanage. I had just retired from my career as an architect and it was the culmination of 6 years planning to be closer to the sea and to Southampton, where I grew up.

For as long as I can remember I have enjoyed painting and drawing although I have never been one for carrying around a sketchbook at every turn or setting up an easel on a windy cliff. On being given my first camera at age 12 I found that I could capture images and bring them back home to work on in comfort.

Early photographers have always fascinated me because of the incredible depth of field achieved with their large plate cameras enabling detail to be seen clearly across all four corners of their photographs. Also, my training as an architect has attuned me to notice the built environment probably accounting for the detail that I put into my paintings. Colour is also important to me and at college, I was fortunate to have a tutor (an engineer and Royal Academician) who was an expert in colour theory.

I have not had any formal training as an artist but have kept my interest going by attending classes here and there. My older sister and brother, both of them with an artistic flair, helped me in my younger days as well. Family life and my career got in the way of developing my painting until my son left home and I was able to adapt his room into a makeshift studio. It was then that I rediscovered my first love which is gouache paints. These can be thinned with water to give the translucency of watercolours or used straight from the tube to give strong bold colours, which with the addition of white, can create the overlapping effects of oil paint. Having painted a couple of scenes from favourite holiday photos I then started actively looking for suitable subjects with my camera. About 6 years ago I painted ‘Fish ‘n Chips on the Quay’ and it went on from there.

In Swanage, I am surrounded by wonderful Purbeck scenery in all directions.

I am also a volunteer watch keeper with the National Coastwatch Institution which allows me to regularly spend time observing the coast in all weathers. I now have my own studio in the back garden and for the first time, I exhibited at Rollington Barn during the PAWs fortnight. That was followed by an exhibition as a guest artist at Purbeck Artisan Yard in Wareham where I hope to be back for Christmas. I have also developed my skills from the figurative to portraits both human and canine.

Portsmouth, 5 July 2017 – Meridien Modena had the great pleasure of starting the Ferrari 70th Anniversary tours in the UK on July 5. On a wonderful sunny morning the parade began at the historic Goodwood Motor Circuit to enjoy the spectacle of FF Corse testing the new Ferrari 488 Challenge. From there the 70 Ferrari cars drove a beautiful scenic route finishing at the iconic Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth.

The LaFerrari Aperta lead the parade which had a fantastic range of Ferraris, with the particular mention of; three F40s, two F50s, a stunning Dino, and an F12tdf. In addition to all of the Ferraris there was a very special appearance of Meridien Modena’s Ferrari 250 GT Coupé Pinin Farina. This was driven by Tim Burton who is also very well known as “Shmee150” on social media channels.

When all Ferraris were parked in their positions over 200 attendees congregated around the LaFerrari Aperta for a group photo with the incredible Spinnaker Tower as the back drop.

Whilst the Ferraris were in place, members of the public could walk around the line-up and enjoy taking some photos. The day came to a close with the LaFerrari Aperta leading all of the Ferraris out of Gunwharf Quays with a huge line-up of Ferrari enthusiasts waving them off.

Honda Urban EV Concept Finally an electric car that I would drive...

Honda has revealed an all-new electric vehicle, the Urban EV Concept; which makes its global debut at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. The concept car is built on a completely new platform, and sets the direction for the technology and design that will appear on a future battery electric Honda production model.

The concept was officially introduced by Honda Motor Co. President and CEO, Takahiro Hachigo, during his press conference speech. “This is not some vision of the distant future; a production version of this car will be here in Europe in 2019,” he added, confirming that the concept is set to be launched within two years.

Exterior design Honda’s Urban EV Concept showcases advanced technology within a simple and sophisticated design. Its low and wide proportions give the car a planted, muscular stance that hint at sporty driving performance.

Its compact proportions mean it has a total vehicle length 100mm shorter than the Jazz supermini.

The Honda emblem on the concept is backlit in blue, which previews a new styling feature for the company‘s future EVs. At the front of the car, interactive multilingual messages can be displayed between the headlights, including greetings, advice for other drivers on the road, or charging status updates.

Interior design The driver’s outward visibility from the Urban EV Concept is excellent thanks to slim A-pillars and a wide windscreen that appears to sweep around the entire front of the car. Entry and exit from the vehicle is via rear-hinged coach doors. The electric charging cable connection is housed on the bonnet.

Honda’s Urban EV Concept can accommodate four occupants, across two bench seats finished in different materials. To create a lounge feeling, the front row is upholstered with natural grey fabric, with the seat backs, squabs and arm rests embellished with contemporary wood finish accents. The seatbelts for the rear bench are fixed in the middle of the seat, allowing the belt to retract out of the way before a passenger exits the car.

The same wood finish wraps around a large ‘floating’ dashboard console. This houses the steering wheel column, a set of simple control buttons, and a panoramic display screen. The dashboard itself is completed by a wrap-around screen that runs behind the console and extends into the doors. The main dashboard screen presents a range of vehicle information including remaining battery level. Whilst the extended door screens function as the car’s wing mirrors through digital camera displays.

Honda Power Manager New methods for managing energy transfers between the grid, homes and electric vehicles could provide revenue opportunities for EV owners in the future. Honda’s Power Manager Concept, revealed alongside the Urban EV Concept in Frankfurt, is a smart system that can store energy more efficiently, releasing electricity generated by renewable sources back into the home or selling it back to the grid.

Electric Vision Honda’s ‘Electric Vision’ strategy, launched at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, includes the development of a dedicated electric vehicle platform, featuring fully-electric powertrain technology. Key parts of the powertrain development will include a high-density, lightweight battery pack, integrated heat management and the evolution of energy transfer functions – both to and from the vehicle.

It is with apprehension and a very cautious heart that I step through the gates, into an incredibly calm, charmingly located campsite, with a fine-looking lake, an outdoor heated pool covered for all seasons, a café, bar, even an outdoor pizza oven… I am petrified… on edge and for some strange reason all I can think about is my manhood!

Strangely, as I walk in a calm cloak of tranquility enfolds me, not a thick cloak of bear hide, or even an invisibility cloak, my mind is clear, back to basics in a way, I suddenly feel like giggling, which in a naturist camp probably isn’t the best foot forward!

For I am in Rivendell - a ‘clothing optional’ campsite, with over 50% of the clientele remaining clothed for the stay, this a place to shake off any worries, forget the rigmarole of the work day and of course, should you so wish, your clothing.

I am greeted with huge smiles by the most genial of hosts ‘Kerry and Andy’ and offered for the night an absolutely stunning safari tent (that sleeps four!). I am shown to my accommodation and I have to say, I am blown away by my 'tent', a large square room of thick top-end 'campshield canvas', plus a huge decking with cooking facilities, seating and a kettle, yes I can settle in for a brew... maybe with a dash of something stronger... this is my kind of living, two large double rooms, incredible quality furniture, fridgefreezer and even heating! This is an all year round set-up, thick cotton robes and fresh clean crisp towels await my disrobing (and re-robing!!)

I settle into my accommodation, a car pulls down the beautifully manicured roads, past my home and pulls up next door, a lovely middleaged couple step out with cheery greeting, a Birmingham duo who are all smiles and warmth, I am definitely not getting naked now, there from my neck of the woods, they may know people I know, I'm not a naturist I'm a journalist what am I doing here, why did I agree to this!!!

I decide to venture out, I have on swim shorts, a towel and a robe, in fact, more clothing than I actually turned up in, the sun's out, the forest is beautiful, a lake shimmers at the side of the pool, a delightful place opens up in front of me, I hear the mellow song of birds, the wind, no cars or industrial clamor, just the laidback chatter of couples sat in the hot-tub and aside the pool, I approach and take a seat, within minutes I'm having a chat with a couple fully clothed and enjoying the peace and quiet – my new 'neighbors', they come here regularly and have never felt the need to undress, I start to feel like I am in holiday mode and completely forget that the people around me are in fact completely nude. arkadia magazine

I slide my robe off with my back to the audience… and slide clumsily into the hot- tub, feeling the protection of the steam and bubbles as I gather my thoughts on what to do next, the indoor pool is giving off a mist of warmth and looks so alluring, so I go for it, I'm up (not in that way thank goodness) and I'm out, the 10 feet of paving flash by, bemused and slightly odd looks come my way as I dive headlong into the warm and inviting water.

Suddenly I'm idly conversing about the traffic jams to fellow businessmen, talking about the cloudy cast heading over to a genteel elderly lady and generally just calming my jets, this isn't odd, or debauched, is this perhaps how we should behave, nothing to hide, nothing to shy away from and a choice to make for yourself, given, it is odd the first time, and yes, I spend the rest of my time half dressed, but it was a pronounced feeling, quite addictive and very natural, and to do it in such a wonderfully calm, clean and inviting site was the perfect opportunity to feel free.

I agree it's not to everyone's taste, and certainly not something that came naturally to my thought process, but this site is so idyllic. It has the only 5 star rating from ‘www.pitchup.com’, a place I will be returning too soon, the accommodation is amazing, the company in the evening fun, everyone early to their own beds and a great breakfast to finish my visit, wonderful to have no pressure, and for the cost, a place to visit just as a boutique 'clothes-optional' site (50% of the audience remains clothed across the year!)

Retirement Beyond...

My name is Jayne Bond, in January 2013 I began my (early) retirement – much earlier than anticipated and with little opportunity to plan. After 33 fabulous years of teaching, initially, as an art teacher and many as an Assistant Headteacher, working crazy hours, often from 8 a.m till midnight, 1 a.m, and frequently 2 a.m, my life suddenly had an empty void.

I’m not one for sitting and dwelling. Yes, I spent a few months getting my head around my new life, but with the most supportive husband and family, you could ever hope for it was time for new learning, new challenges and a total change of direction.

I dusted off my old camera and started to take photos – mainly in the garden and always on auto mode, but it was enough to get the creative juices flowing again.

A few weeks later I treated myself to a new DSLR – and, having spent more years than I care to remember teaching children about the dangers of social networking, I threw caution to the wind and joined a local Facebook photography group!!

It was a friendly group of people, always supportive and encouraging, both online and at local photography meet-ups. I talked to others, asked what they did, tried out ideas and basically experimented. I would spend hours looking at fabulous images in magazines or online, working out how they were achieved and trying to emulate techniques. With a creative background, composition came easy but technical aspects take a bit longer to grasp!!

I suppose after spending so long in the teaching profession my mind just couldn’t switch off and it wasn’t long before I’d joined the Royal Photographic Society, and, with the help of a dear friend, achieved the Licentiateship of the RPS (LRPS).

We are so lucky here in Dorset with so many iconic places to photograph, amazing scenery and local wildlife. I’d spend hours in the Poole Park practicing birds in flight and during the spring and autumn months, I continue to visit Brownsea Island several times to photograph the red squirrels.

www.facebook.com/jaynebondphotography I’ve got up at 3 am to travel to a hide hundreds of miles away, stood for hours in temperatures of -12˚ and sat for hours in temperatures of 45˚. Wildlife is unpredictable, it doesn’t turn up to order, it involves a lot of sitting, waiting, sometimes for hours, sometimes for days but that’s all part of the experience.

Whether it’s a hide close to home or sat in a jeep in India being close to nature and the wonderful creatures within is a world away from the rigid timetabled life I had previously.

The first time you see a tiger in the wild is just incredible – you almost don’t want to take a photograph you just want to sit and absorb the reality of what’s in front of you.

I’m very much an amateur and photography remains a ‘hobby’ but it is a hobby that has consumed my life.

Recently I entered my first national competition, the British Photography Awards, and was thrilled to be shortlisted in the Land Animals section with my ‘Frosty Stag’ image, taken in Richmond Park on a very cold January morning.

Having traveled with NaturesLens on several occasions over the last few years I’m now absolutely delighted to be leading their next trip to India and I can’t wait to be working with other clients and sharing with them my own experiences over the last few years.

I recently turned 60 years of age, I’ve just had success in my first national photography competition, I’m leading my first wildlife photography trip and I’m booked to give my first Photography Club talk.

Who said anything about retirement – life changes, embrace the changes.

But they say variety is the spice of life and I was keen to photograph different species, so, after researching various options I booked my first photography holiday with a company called NaturesLens, photographing Dalmatian Pelicans at Lake Kerkini in Greece. It was fabulous and I was absolutely hooked. At this stage I was like a child at Christmas – I wanted to go everywhere and do everything.

From the balminess of the sun's tender caress to the even breeze of an early autumn evening lapping at your earlobes, that first time putting socks on and slipping the flip-flops to one side as you bring out he snug boots or the old faithful trainers, the season is turning, and so are your wardrobe choices as Autumn grasps us by the collars and literally wind sweeps us into a new climate.

I say this every year and in the sixteen years I've been here, this hasn't changed, this is the best season ever!!! Everyone who visits heads home, the roads are hassle-free again, you can drive from one side of Dorset to the other in under an hour, and everything feels sheltered and personal, the beaches are decorated in the bands of rake marks, the air has a frosted nip to the nose, windows are being pulled to at dusk and heating systems click on at the same time from Lyme to Lymington, the nights draw in and the lead into Christmas is one of dog walking, quick cheeky pint on the way home from work and above all, hot dinners are back, it's the time to forget about beach bodies and hurrying off to the bar on a Thursday night... time to stack on a pound or two, strike into the attic for those winter coats that have been stashed away in old suitcases ready for this wonderfully wild and toothsome time of year.

Its winter ahead, frozen fingers and frosty car windows, the echo of your lungs afloat in the air from the deep intake of nature’s cleansing vapours, yes I am getting all romantic in prose, I am excited and just love the build-up to Christmas.

I have been following my gang on Facebook and it would seem we have seized the essence of this time of the year through the art that is photography, I have chosen Lee and Donna, two close friends and cherry picked what I think sums up this remarkable time of year, from the dipping sun of the surf scene to the boys that rock out in the Chinook, a spectacle I have witnessed whilst jet-skiing across the bay, nutters‌ and of course some scenery of what is, our divine and spectacular landmarks, I hope to see you on the beach catching the foam off the waves, your best wellies on and a scarf and hat that match.

Catch you all in 2018, I'm off to cook some roasties and settle by the fire... then snuggle up later for some red wine, this is my County, this is my exciting time, life is gravy...

Here at Arkadia we have had the chance to experience the voyage of SS Shieldhall and take a trip out to enjoy the amazing spectacle of the Bournemouth Airshow, huge thanks to the charity that runs this amazing vessel - The Solent Steam Packet Limited, the charity operating Southampton’s heritage steamship SS Shieldhall.

This is the last remaining steamship in the UK, originally constructed in 1955 as a vessel to carry treated sludge down the River Clyde to the dumping grounds for the Glasgow Corporation, Shieldhall was sold to Southern Water in 1977 to perform a similar role out of Southampton. Her role was discontinued due to rising costs and Shieldhall was due to be sold for scrap.

However, a group of enterprising individuals saw her heritage value, forming the charity and purchasing her for her scrap price of £20k. Amongst the 500 sailings since have been trips to Dordrecht in Holland and to her home port of Glasgow for Shieldhall’s 50th birthday celebrations in 2005. Although currently limited to sailing in Solent waters (with passengers) it is hoped to extend the list of cruise destinations in future years.

SS SHIELDHALL

Shieldhall, we set sail at 10 am on Sat 2nd Sept, out of Poole Quay, for an all-day airshow voyage, giving passengers the opportunity to enjoy the spectacle of what turned out to be one of the greatest shows to date, an incredible place to watch an incredible spectacle.

As with all Shieldhall cruises, passengers were able to see the impressive Shieldhall engine room with its original steam engines at work, and the Bridge, with its traditional instruments and gleaming brass work. Warm weather also meant the bar and saloon were busy with a steady stream of visitors for Shieldhall’s renowned real ale, bacon butties, and ice cream!

Shieldhall Chief Engineer Graham Mackenzie was delighted at the crowd's excitement and another voyage milestone. ‘It is a credit to our loyal band of volunteers that Shieldhall is now over 500 voyages strong, with the promise of much more to come. We are all united in our love of steam and keeping the tradition of steamships in Southampton going strong.

The first steam packet companies operated out of Southampton in the 1820s and nearly 200 years later passengers can still get to appreciate this wonderful mode of travel. Shieldhall is a living time capsule, the skills of our volunteers fast belonging to a forgotten age. However, thanks to a recent HLF grant we have been able to secure her future for many years to come, and are reaching out to new audiences who have never set foot on board a steamship. The smell of the steam, the distinctive sound of the Shieldhall whistle, the opportunity to feel the heat of the Boiler Room these are experiences that are never forgotten by our passengers.’

Today Shieldhall is the largest operational, passengercargo steamship in Britain. A member of the National Historic Fleet she serves as a seagoing tribute to Britain’s maritime heritage. Shieldhall is based in and sails from Southampton Docks (except for a few days in September in Poole where she is moored for the Bournemouth Air Festival).
