A Message from the ALA Chair

Welcome to The Vines for the 47th Annual Literacy Conference! The Arkansas Literacy Association is THRILLED you are here! First, I want to say “THANK YOU” for choosing teaching as a profession--we need great teachers! As teachers, we are passionate about our profession and those we serve, our students. Teachers impact students’ lives every day, yet, the importance of our profession is often over-looked. We want you to know that ALA truly believes teaching is the MOST important profession and the most honorable, as well. During the next two days, it is my hope that you will be inspired by our speakers, learn from colleagues, and come away with new strategies you can begin using next week to continue “Growing a Literacy Culture” in your classroom and your school. Our goal is to help you sustain your passion and further develop your “greatness” as a teacher! If you are not a member of ALA, I invite you to stop by our membership booth to learn more about the benefits of belonging to a professional literacy association and how you can become a member of your local council, Arkansas Literacy Association, and the International Literacy Association. This is all for you! Sit back, relax, and let the learning, growing, and laughing begin! Deborah McMillan ALA Chair

We work with the Arkansas State Library and the Arkansas Department of Education to host the Charlie May Simon and Arkansas Diamond Book Awards and inform about the Arkansas Teen Book Award. We invite you and your students to JOIN us in reading and voting on their favorites from those book lists each year. We host online chat style book clubs with authors and teachers on our ALA Facebook page. What fun! We invite you to JOIN us for those and other online events we host. We are always looking for new leaders to JOIN us in conference and event planning and other endeavors. You will learn and grow as an individual.
