Hi. I am Oshin Thapa from Nepal. I am a sophomore pursuing my degree in Biological Science. A-State has always been my first choice while applying to study in the U.S. From the broad range of degrees offered, affordable living expenses, and amazing teaching-learning experience, I have never been this happy. Apart from my educational experience, I feel so lucky that I am a part of an institution which is full of students with different perspectives, backgrounds, communities and cultures. Our school proudly loves to express and offer equal opportunities and respect for each and every student.

COME FROM?
ARKANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY welcomes all international students and provides access to a quality, affordable education in a caring and supportive environment. Students come from all over the world for language instruction and degree programs. Here we can take you further!
ENGLISH LEARNING ACADEMY ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE [ ESL ] Learn the English skills necessary for academic and social success through expert classroom instruction and exciting programs and activities offered. As an ELA student, students will have free and unlimited access to all university services and facilities with your paid enrollment, including recreational facilities, student health facilities, the library, email, computer access, and student organizations and clubs.
DIRECT ADMIT TO A-STATE You will not need to submit any test scores such as TOEFL or IELTS in order to attend academic programs at A-State once you successfully complete the ESL program. To be directly admitted, you must complete the final level of the program with 80 percent or higher proficiency for undergraduate admission, or 90 percent or higher proficiency, and receive a passing grade for graduate admission.
ACTIVITIES The English Learning Academy also offers activities for students to be involved in both on campus and around Jonesboro. Activities include sports tournaments, game nights, movie nights and trips to the farmers market. Each semester, at least one trip is made to Memphis to visit the International Market, where students can often find ingredients and foods from their home countries that aren’t always available around Jonesboro.
CURRICULUM The ELA program consists of five levels plus a foundation level for students with little or no English experience. Each level focuses on the four skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening, as well as pronunciation and grammar. Students are expected to complete homework assignments, quizzes, exams and participate for a final grade. Oral communication courses will also require students to do oral presentations and writing courses will require students to keep a writing journal. 8

Students with the 7-Day meal plan may enter the Acansa Dining Hall unlimited times each day of the week. The number after the “+” indicates flex dollars. Flex dollars operate like a declining balance account that can be used at any of our dining venues, including Acansa Dining Hall, the Food Court, Starbucks, the Campus Store and Cafe a la Cart. The purchase of any of the meal plans is dependent on number of years enrolled in college. Unused flex dollars will carry over from fall to spring if a spring board plan is purchased, but they must be used by the end of the spring semester to avoid forfeiture. 9
CAMERON Working as a Resident Assistant (RA) has been one of the major highlights of my 4-years at A-State. Being from South Africa, the RA position helped me to settle in a lot faster as it gave me the opportunity to meet many students on campus. As an RA I have also been able to meet many of the fantastic staff here at A-State, who have all supported me throughout my time at college. The diversity of students that I have interacted with daily, with their many different cultures and languages, has provided the opportunity for me to experience these different cultures and languages in a place where I would not have had this opportunity in South Africa. The vast number of people I have worked with has allowed me to develop my communication and leadership skills. I have been an RA for three consecutive years, and not only has it been enjoyable and a wonderful experience, but I also feel proud to have been able to assist many students settle-in and make A-State their home-awayfrom-home. The full-time staff and the other RA’s encourage me in every way and this encourages me to do the same for all my residents.
NO SHORTAGE OF DINING OPTIONS
AState.edu/Dining
From salad to dessert and everything in between to keep your belly happy, the newly renovated Acansa Dining Hall is a favorite spot on campus for students. If you are in the mood for something else, try the food court. We have sushi, smoothies, mac-and-cheese bowls, grilled-to-order fare, and the college staple – hot, melty, cheesy pizza. We even have the student favorite: Chick-fil-A. There is no shortage of other eateries around campus, too: Starbucks Coffee for your morning caffeine buzz, Einstein Bros. Bagels for all of your bakery and deli needs, the new Sweet Shoppe for your sweet tooth, and Simply-To-Go for something quick to eat while on the move. Our Campus Store is always stocked for whatever snack you are craving, and Howl On Wheels is A-State’s very own food truck with plenty of delectable delights. Visit the website to explore meal plans and get ready to chow down.

AT ARKANSAS STATE, STUDENTS PUSH THE LIMITS OF LEARNING. WE COLLABORATE WITH NASA IN OUTER SPACE & HIGH ABOVE THE CLOUDS
LAUNCH PAD In 2024, a solar eclipse will cast a path of full totality across the Jonesboro area and we will be ready to chase it. A-State researchers will draw on their eclipse experience in 2017, when they worked with undergraduate students in a NASA project that flew a high-altitude balloon to capture video, photographs and scientific data. The Arkansas BalloonSAT team, which includes students, has launched and flown 62 high altitude balloons from Arkansas and Missouri in the last 16 years. 11
This photograph of the Earth’s surface, captured at an ABS record altitude, was taken by a camera on board a high-altitude balloon launched by A-State students.

THE CREATE@STATE SYMPOSIUM
AState.edu/CreateAtState
Through multiple fields of study, such as engineering and biological sciences, A-State students have had the opportunity to collaborate and go beyond textbooks and classrooms by sending their applied knowledge into the sky. Dr. Maureen Dolan and Shea Harris guided a team of A-State students in creating a SPOCS (Student Payload Opportunity with Citizen Science) experiment that was flown by NASA to the International Space Station in July 2022. Their concept tests if waxworms can be used to biodegrade plastics to manage waste, with a goal to help to provide a more sustainable environment on earth and future, long-term space travel.
Each year, A-State holds its annual student research event, Create@STATE. Students are encouraged to research any topic they desire and develop creative solutions under the advisement of an A-State mentor. Grants for extended research, as well as professional careers, can be launched here! Check out the Create@STATE podcast or YouTube channel for more information.
