Homecoming 2009
Arkansas Tech celebrated its 100-year anniversary Oct. 16-17 with a Homecoming celebration that brought generations of the Tech Family together for one big green and gold party. The Homecoming Parade returned to Downtown Russellville for the first time in almost two decades on Saturday afternoon. The festivities moved to campus for the Party at the Plaza, the dedication of Centennial Plaza and a record-setting 62-30 Wonder Boys’ victory over West Georgia. Senior Haley May of Fayetteville was crowned Homecoming Queen 2009, and the weekend concluded with a brilliant fireworks display over the skies of Russellville. Please enjoy these snapshots of Tech Homecoming 2009. If you were part of the celebration, thank you very much for your attendance and we hope you left with a new set of Tech memories. Thank you for being part of the Tech Family. Keep in touch with your alma mater at www.techties.atu.edu, and we’ll see you at Homecoming 2010!

Your memories help tell the story of Tech Tech Action
Save The Date Feb. 13, 2010
One of the most wonderful aspects of a college education is that no two people have the exact same experience, but there are shared events, shared places and shared memories that alumni from each era have as a collective experience. We invite you to take a moment and think about the following questions. We would love to have your responses as part of the historical record of Arkansas Tech University as we seek to preserve our past and embrace our future. The shared experiences that we all remember are an integral part of our past, but so are stories of every day life on campus. Those tales help tell the story of Arkansas Tech and the way that it has evolved over time.

Tech Timeline: 1966-78
Throughout the duration of the Arkansas Tech University centennial celebration, Tech Action will take a look back at some of the events that have shaped the institution during its first 100 years. In this issue, we look at 1966 through 1978. 1966 The Administration Building, which had previously served as the campus dining hall, is remodeled to serve its current purpose. Also, Jones Residence Hall (named in honor of Professor Charles Jones, teacher of psychology and education) and Paine Residence Hall (named in honor of former Board of Trustees member Joseph B. Paine) are constructed. Spring 1966 Arkansas Tech wins its first-ever AIC golf championship. The Wonder Boys would also win the AIC golf crown in 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1984, 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1995. January 1967 President Hull announces his intention to retire after 35 years of service to Arkansas Tech, effective June 30, 1967.
1972 Crabaugh Hall (named for Dean Alfred J. Crabaugh) is constructed. It was built on the same site and in the same style as the Old Main Building, which was razed when it was determined that it would cost more to remodel it than it would to replace it. January 1972 President Pratt announces his intention to resign effective June 30, 1972. Robert A. Young Sr. was appointed acting president for the 6-month period between Dr. Pratt’s resignation and the end of the calendar year.
September 1972 The Hull Physical Education Building (named for President J.W. Hull) is dedicated during Parents’ Day.
April 1967 Dr. George L.B. Pratt, director of institutional research at the University of Arkansas, is selected to become the ninth president of Arkansas Tech, effective July 1, 1967.
Spring 1975 Female student-athletes at Arkansas Tech adopt “Golden Suns” as their new nickname. When women’s intercollegiate athletics are officially added at Tech before the start of the 1977-78 academic year, the women’s teams are known by that nickname.
January 1970 Arkansas Tech begins its annual fund-raising drive. The first campaign is chaired by Bert Mullens. Winter 1970 Arkansas Tech (22-10 overall) advances to the NAIA National Tournament in men’s basketball. Fall 1970 Arkansas Tech (8-3 overall, 5-1 conference) wins the AIC football title. Fall 1971 Arkansas Tech (12-1 overall, 6-0 conference) wins the AIC football title and advances to the NAIA national championship game in its first-ever trip to the NAIA Playoffs.
President, 1967-72
Summer 1972 Witherspoon Hall (named for Director of Bands Gene Witherspoon) is opened and dedicated later that year at Homecoming.
June 1967 In one of the final acts of his presidency, Joseph W. Hull and Arkansas Tech grant a donation of land that allowed for Highway 7 to be re-routed around campus the way we know it today. President Hull had proposed such a re-routing as early as 1939. The re-routing project was completed in fall 1972.
Fall 1968 Arkansas Tech (10-2 overall, 5-1 conference) wins the AIC football title.

April 1977 Cora McHenry becomes the first African-American member of the Arkansas Tech Board of Trustees. May 1977 Arkansas Tech awards its first Master’s degrees to nine graduates. April 1978 Tech Field, the home facility for the Tech baseball team, is dedicated. Dr. P.K. Merrill Faculty Member, 1944-72

Ozark Campus opens new student center Arkansas Tech University-Ozark Campus marked one of the most significant milestones in its history in September when its new student services and conference center was dedicated with two days of events. Arkansas Tech-Ozark hosted an open house and ice cream social for faculty, staff, students and community members on Thursday, Sept. 10. That was followed on Friday, Sept. 11, by a luncheon for community leaders in Ozark and the surrounding area. Arkansas Tech President Dr. Robert C. Brown (photographed, middle right) spoke at the luncheon on Sept. 11. Arkansas Tech-Ozark Campus Chancellor Dr. Jo Alice Blondin (photographed, bottom right) welcomed former Board of Trustees member William R. “Bud Harper and his wife, Dr. Jo Harper, to campus. NCAA Division II Playoffs return to Tech It will take quite some time to revise the football record books at Arkansas Tech during this off-season. The most prolific offense in the 95-season history of Arkansas Tech football dazzled crowds, smashed longstanding and seemingly untouchable records and led the Wonder Boys to a berth in the NCAA Division II Playoffs. It was Tech’s third NCAA Division II Playoffs berth in the last decade. The Wonder Boys have now made more NCAA Division II Playoffs appearances than any other football program in Arkansas. Arkansas Tech’s journey to the playoffs actually began in January when Nick Graziano, a transfer from the University of Nevada, enrolled at Tech. 1999 GSC champions reunite at Homecoming In life, there are those families that we are born into, and then there are those that we build through victories and setbacks alongside people that otherwise might be total strangers. The men who played football at Arkansas Tech University in the fall of 1999 are a part of a family that will always share a special bond as the result of one remarkable achievement. The 1999 Wonder Boys, the first team from Arkansas to win the Gulf South Conference football title outright, gathered for a 10-year reunion at Tech Homecoming 2009. “Obviously, when you win a championship and you win as many games as that group won, there are a lot of special guys involved,” said Tech head coach Steve Mullins. “That was a team that was very focused and a group of people that loved each other. They were dedicated to one another, they took care of their business in the classroom and they never doubted that they were going to win a game. No matter what the circumstances were, we were just going to keep fighting. As a result, great things happened to them.” The 1999 Wonder Boys started their season with two losses in their first three games, and starting quarterback George Harp went down with a season-ending knee injury in game three.
Josh Price, a sophomore quarterback who otherwise would have been destined for a redshirt season in 1999, came off the bench and led Tech to eight straight wins to close out the regular season. The Wonder Boys came from behind to defeat Southern Arkansas 20-17 in overtime on Nov. 13, 1999, to clinch the GSC title. Tech finished the 1999 season 9-3 overall and Autumn 2009
8-1 in GSC play. Those Wonder Boys made the school’s first appearance in the NCAA Division II Playoffs, falling to eventual national runner-up Carson-Newman 40-28 in the first round.
