Homecoming 2010
In Review: Arkansas Tech Homecoming 2010 Homecoming 2010 was a time to remember. It was a time to recall the individual and collective experiences that Arkansas Tech alumni share; the experiences that make them part of the Tech Family. Homecoming 2010 was a time to celebrate. Rothwell Hall was dedicated. Morgan Austin, a senior from Atkins, was crowned Homecoming queen. The Wonder Boys defeated Southern Arkansas 35-19 for their fourth consecutive Homecoming victory. Homecoming 2010 was a time to imagine the good times that are still to come. Ground was broken for Hindsman Tower. The parade in Downtown Russellville celebrated Tech’s increasingly diverse student body and its global impact. Several hundred future Tech students attended a campus Open House. Homecoming 2010 was a success because it was celebrated by people who love Arkansas Tech. People who appreciate the important role that Tech has played and will continue to play in each of their lives.

Emotions strong at Rothwell Hall dedication Ben Rothwell started fighting back the tears as soon as he approached the microphone during the dedication ceremony for Rothwell Hall on Saturday, Oct. 16. He spoke of family, he spoke of love for his alma mater and he spoke of offering future generations the same opportunities that he and his wife, Terry Tucker Rothwell, found at Arkansas Tech University. “As Terry and I thought about how we could share the blessings we’ve received, we could think of no better way to do that than to give back to students who are trying to better themselves,” said Rothwell. “Terry and I are so proud of this building, and so proud of what (Tech President Dr. Robert C. Brown) has done here. You want to invest your money wisely, and we’ve bet on a winner by giving to Arkansas Tech.” Rothwell Hall is a 60,000-square foot facility that houses the Arkansas Tech College of Business, a regional office of the Arkansas Small Business and Technology Development Center, the Roy and Christine Sturgis Academic Advising Center and two floors of classroom space.

Hindsman Tower exceeds fundraising goal Arkansas Tech alumnus and benefactor Robert Norman announced during a groundbreaking ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 16, that the Hindsman Tower committee has exceeded its goal of raising $300,000. Members of the committee held their first meeting in late June. They solicited donations from Tech alumni who were influenced by Sam Hindsman during his 22year career at Arkansas Tech and others who admired a man who helped make the university what it is today.

“Hindsman Tower is a fitting memorial to a man who was a central figure in the formation of the modern Arkansas Tech,” said Tech President Dr. Robert C. Brown during the groundbreaking ceremony on Homecoming Saturday 2010. “The tower will be a landmark, and it will be at the very center of activity on our campus.” Construction of Hindsman Tower is scheduled to be completed in summer 2011 on the lawn south of the Ross Pendergraft Library and Technology Center. The structure will be dedicated at Homecoming 2011. Hindsman, who served on the physical education faculty at Arkansas Tech from 1947-69, was head men’s basketball coach at Tech from 1947-66, coached the Tech football program from 1954-58 and served as head bowling coach for a period in the 1960s. Hindsman is the winningest men’s basketball coach in Arkansas Tech history. He guided the Wonder Boys to 355 victories, 11 Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference titles, nine NAIA National Tournament berths and two trips to the semifinal round of the NAIA National Tournament.
He also coached Arkansas Tech to two AIC football titles (1954 and 1958) and a pair of AIC bowling championships (1963 and 1964). Hindsman passed away in 1997.

“He was more than a coach,” said Norman, who played football under Hindsman. “He was a great mentor to many of us. If Coach Hindsman was here today, he’d have a big beaming, great, great smile. Both he and his wife, Mary Lou, would be very proud of this day and what’s going to occur.” Members of the committee, project donors and members of the Hindsman family all participated in the groundbreaking ceremony.

Tech enrollment near 10,000 students Enrollment milestones continue to be established and records continue to fall at Arkansas Tech University. Arkansas Tech has 9,814 students on its campuses in Russellville and Ozark this fall. That is an 11.3 percent increase over fall 2009, and it marks the 12th consecutive year in which Arkansas Tech has set a new school record for enrollment. Enrollment figures were reported after Sept. 10, which was the 11th class day of the 2010-11 academic year. “Arkansas Tech University has continued to grow because we are sound academically, we are a great value among the top five four-year institutions in our state and we create

A panel of six consultant evaluators from institutions of higher education in the north central region of the country will visit the Arkansas Tech campus March 14-16, 2011, and conduct a comprehensive site visit. A combination of the self-study and the report from those six evaluators will be used to determine if Arkansas Tech University will be re-accredited for another 10-year period. “I am confident that we can document that we take our charge very seriously,” said Tarver. “This process makes you sit down and take stock of who you really are as an institution. The self-study is the best way for a university to bring about significant change within itself. It’s an important process that affects everyone associated with Arkansas Tech.”
