Act of kindness brings back fond memories

Homecoming brings back memories of the teachers and administrators who helped us realize the life-changing benefits of a college education. One day before Homecoming 2011, I was privileged to witness one man’s tribute to two special mentors. Darryl Melton played football for the Wonder Boys from 1966-69. He graduated from Tech in 1970 and now he and his wife, Martha, are retired and living in Tennessee. Retirement has given Darryl time to become quite an artist in the medium of woodcarving. It has also provided him with time to reflect upon his life and where he might be today without Coach Don Dempsey and Coach Don Sevier. “Both of them had me in the palm of their hand, and there were several times they could have tossed me aside,” said Melton. “But they didn’t.” Homecoming 2011 provided Darryl with an opportunity to thank those two gentlemen. He produced an honor staff for both of them with several meaningful carvings — including “1968 AIC Champs” and his favorite Bible verse.
It was one part of a memorable Homecoming weekend. I would like to thank each of you who attended our events. Your presence made Homecoming special. I hope that we can all be inspired by Darryl’s example. Regardless of what our major was or what extracurricular activities we participated in, we were all in the palms of the hands of our teachers and mentors at Arkansas Tech. Not all of us are skilled enough to produce something as beautiful as the honor staffs that Darryl made for Coach Dempsey and Coach Sevier, but each of us can remember those special people who helped us during our years at Arkansas Tech and attempt to live up to the standards they set for us. Please enjoy the photos from Homecoming 2011 and the stories of continued growth and improvement at Arkansas Tech in this issue of Tech Action. We look forward to seeing you on campus soon. Go Tech!

Homecoming 2011 at Arkansas Tech University will be remembered for the dedication of Hindsman Tower, the first meeting of the newly-formed Alumni “T” Club, the crowning of Ashley Vick of Greenwood as Homecoming Queen and a fifth consecutive Homecoming victory for the Wonder Boys football team. Those will be the memories the history books will record, but of equal importance are the personal connections that members of the Arkansas Tech family made during two warm and beautiful autumn days in Russellville. The transformation of the physical presence of the Arkansas Tech campus over the past two decades is truly something to marvel at. The quantity and quality of the academic programs added in recent years is impressive. The fact that Arkansas Tech is now home to more than 10,000 students is a point of pride for all associated. But it is not buildings or statistics that make Arkansas Tech special — it is the people. And the people of Arkansas Tech made Homecoming 2011 a grand success.

A red-hot front nine lifted the team of Dan Nicholson, Todd Dennis and George Jones to victory in the 2011 Arkansas Tech University Homecoming Golf Classic at Russellville Country Club. Nicholson/Dennis/Jones shot 15-under par 56 to finish in a first-place tie with the team of Dan Lovelady, Jimmy Cunningham and Nelson Ennis. The tie was broken with a card-off starting at the No. 1 handicap hole, which is the par-4 ninth hole. Both teams birdied No. 9 and both teams birdied the second-hardest hole, which is No. 14. The tournament was decided on the third-most difficult hole, which is the par-4 third. Nicholson/Dennis/Jones birdied that hole, while Lovelady/ Cunningham/Ennis made par. The birdie on No. 3 was part of a flawless front nine for the winning team. Nicholson/Dennis/Jones played the front nine in 9-under 26. They made seven birdies, an eagle and one par on the front side.

Enrollment at Arkansas Tech increased 6.6 percent over the past 12 months, and the university has seen its enrollment grow by 147 percent since 1997. This fall marks the first time that Arkansas Tech has been home to more than 10,000 students. It is the 13th consecutive year in which Arkansas Tech has established a new school record for enrollment. “Our track record of growth over the past 13 years is unmatched by any public university in the state of Arkansas,” said Dr. Robert C. Brown, Arkansas Tech president since 1993. “The success story of Arkansas Tech is rooted in the excellence and dedication of our people. The faculty, staff, students and alumni of this university can be proud of what we have built together. Regardless of the changing and sometimes challenging circumstances around us, Arkansas Tech continues to thrive.” Among the challenges that Arkansas Tech faced in recent months was the implementation of Act 323 of the 87th Arkansas General Assembly.
The law mandated that public universities and colleges in Arkansas cannot spend more than 30 percent of their unrestricted educational and general tuition and fee income on scholarships during the 2011-12 fiscal year. The percentage mandated by Act 323 of 2009 drops the figure to 25 percent in 2012-13 and 20 percent beginning in 2013-14. Arkansas Tech is spending just 19.23 percent of its unrestricted educational and general tuition and fee income on scholarships during the 2011-12 academic year, which puts the university in line with Act 323 of 2009 guidelines two years ahead of schedule. “When Act 323 was passed in 2009, we developed a scholarship task force that was charged with developing a plan that would allow us to comply with the law while maintaining our enrollment,” said Brown. “Under the leadership of Senior Vice President for Administration and Finance David Moseley, the members of the scholarship task force rendered a great service to Arkansas Tech. Because of their diligence and expertise, today we stand in full compliance with the law and our growth continues unabated.”
Despite the new limitations on university-funded scholarships, Arkansas Tech enrolled a school-record total of 1,589 freshmen for the fall 2011 semester. The previous school record of 1,527 freshmen was set in fall 2009. The high school grade point average for members of the Arkansas Tech Class of 2015 is 3.22, and first-time freshmen at Tech this fall had an average ACT score of 22.3. This marks the 17th consecutive year in which the Arkansas Tech University freshman class has beaten the national average on the ACT exam. “The Arkansas Tech policy of moderately selective admissions standards is among the key factors in our success,” said Brown. “Arkansas cannot and will not realize its full potential for economic development unless we increase the percentage of our adult population that holds a baccalaureate degree. Arkansas Tech only admits those students whose academic track record indicates an ability to complete a baccalaureate degree program. We focus on providing those students with the tools they need to persist to graduation, and the results speak for themselves.”

1950s Jock Davis (BUAD/MKTG ’50) has written a memoir entitled “Brothers Four” about the experiences that he and his brothers had growing up during the Great Depression and serving their country in World War II.
1960s Michael Graves (ART EDU ’66) is keeping busy in retirement by serving as a constable for the township of Big Rock in Pulaski County, holding the post of president for the Little Rock (Snow) Ski Club and spending time with his grandchildren Elias and Rowan. Michael retired from a career with AT&T Yellow Pages in 2009.

Class Notes Sue Cumnock Williams (HEPE ’68) is retired from the University of California at Davis faculty. She spent nearly four decades with the institution as a coach, physical education instructor and physical education program director. Sue coached more than 80 All-Americans in 29 seasons as the women’s cross country coach and 14 seasons as the men’s cross country coach at UC Davis. She was named NCAA women’s cross country coach of the decade for the 1980s and she received the James H. Meyer Distinguished Achievement Award from the UC Davis Academic Federation in 2003.
1970s Travis Beard (MUED ’70 & M.Ed. MUS ’77) will be enshrined in the Phi Beta Mu Arkansas Omicron Chapter Hall of Fame in recognition of his career in music education in 2012. Travis taught music and directed bands in the Russellville School District from 1974-2009. Dr. Kay Woodiel (HEPE ’73) was promoted to full professor at Eastern Michigan University in the School of Health Promotion and Human Performance.

Michael Bullard (MUED ’75) was named 2011-12 Vance County (N.C.) principal of the year by a panel consisting of current and retired educators in the area and a member of the Vance County Board of Education. Michael has served as principal of the Vance County Early College High School since its establishment four years ago.
1990s Laura Ahlert Davis (BUAD ’90) has started a new career as an agent with ERA Henley Real Estate in Conway. She and her husband, Walt Davis (FISH/ WLDLF ’90), have three sons: Ty (18), Ethan (16) and Evan (13). Walt is vice president of operations for Hank’s Furniture. They live in Greenbrier. Daniel Spencer (HEPE ’90) graduated with honors from Arkansas State University in July with a Master of Education degree in educational leadership in administration. Daniel is head football coach for Cabot Junior High School North. He and his wife, Kimberly, have two children: Leyton (9) and Kaitlyn Aubrey (5). Mary Alice Hughes (HEPE ’91) has become co-owner of Insurance Advantage in Jacksonville. Mary Alice has 17 years of experience in the insurance industry. Her agency specializes in Medicare products, long-term care, health insurance, life insurance and tax-deferred annuities. Sam Belcher (ENGR ’92) was named senior vice president of operations for the Constellation Energy Nuclear Group (CENG) fleet based in Baltimore, Md. Sam previously served as vice president for CENG at its Nine Mile Point facility in Scriba, N.Y. Terri Rowe Burnette (BIOL ’97) joined St. Edward Mercy in Fort Smith as a business development specialist. Terri has worked in the healthcare industry for the past 14 years.

Jeananne Cooper Hawking (JOUR ’85) was chosen to serve as a director on the 2011-12 Sales and Marketing Executives International Board. Jeananne is director of sales for the Wyndham Riverfront Hotel in North Little Rock. Vicki Schneider (JOUR ’88) was named North Logan County Chamber of Commerce educator of the year during the chamber’s banquet in February. Vicki has taught English and journalism at Paris High School for 23 years. She also covers sports and school events for the Paris Express newspaper and she is owner of Schneider Photography in Paris.

Reynolds Professor of History at the University of Notre Dame, was the guest speaker for the inaugural David W. Krueger Lecture at Arkansas Tech University on Wednesday, Oct. 19. Fernandez-Armesto (photographed, right) offered the assembled crowd at the Doc Bryan Lecture Hall a lecture entitled “Change: Why it Happens, Why it Accelerates and What Might Happen Next.” Krueger (photographed, left) taught history at Arkansas Tech from 1960-2010 and retired at the rank of associate professor. The David W. Van Horn Construction of Russellville will build the $10.1 million residence hall scheduled to open in fall 2013 at Arkansas Tech University. The Arkansas Tech Board of Trustees awarded the residence hall construction contract during its regular monthly meeting on Thursday, Oct. 20. Van Horn Construction was the low bidder among six firms that submitted bids for the project. Once complete, the five-story, 64,170-square foot residence hall will accommodate 290 Tech students per semester. It will be located on M Street between Wilson Residence Hall and Hughes Residence Hall.

A Look Back: 1971 Wonder Boys
40 Years Later
School-record 12 wins still stands It has been four decades since the 1971 Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys carved themselves a significant place in the history of college football in the Natural State.

The 40 years that have passed since that memorable autumn in Russellville have done nothing to take the shine off their accomplishments. In fact, time has revealed just how special that group was. Behind a vaunted wishbone attack and a nearly impenetrable defense, the Wonder Boys of Arkansas Polytechnic College finished the 1971 regular season with an unblemished record of 11-0. Tech romped to the Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference title, outscoring its six league opponents by a cumulative score of 229-84. The Wonder Boys entered the NAIA National Playoffs ranked No. 1 in the nation and bolstered their claim to that position by steamrolling Northern State (S.D.) 24-0 in the national semifinals. Tech held the Wolves to 169 yards of total offense as the Wonder Boys improved to 12-0. Arkansas Tech fans had never been more confident, but Wonder Boys head coach Don Dempsey knew what he was about to face in the national championship game — the Tigers of Livingston State College (known now as the University of West Alabama).

“We’ve got to play our best ball game to have a chance,” Dempsey told Arkansas Gazette scribe Jim Bailey before the game. “Not to win, just to have a chance. I can’t get anybody to believe it, but we’re up against something we haven’t seen this year.”
Livingston State College had to first taste defeat in order to reach its potential. The Tigers suffered a 2120 loss to arch rival Troy State in the third game of the 1971 season. That setback turned out to be the genesis of the greatest season in their history. Livingston State switched to the wishbone offense the following week and finished the regular season with seven consecutive wins. The Tigers earned a berth in the NAIA National Playoffs with a 9-1 record. Behind linebacker Nels Strickland, Livingston State defeated West Liberty (W. Va.) 25-2 in its opening-round contest to earn a berth in the NAIA national championship game. The title game was scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Dec. 11, 1971, at Birmingham’s Legion Field — just 113 miles from Livingston State College. The Tigers were coached by Mickey Andrews, who went on to fame at Florida State as the defensive coordinator on head coach Bobby Bowden’s staff from 1984-2010. Andrews was quoted by Bailey in the Arkansas Gazette pre-game article as saying that the championship would come down to whether or not his defense could get enough stops against the Wonder Boys’ offense. Andrews’ words proved prophetic. The Wonder Boys took over at their own 18-yard line with Livingston State leading 14-10 and 7:40 to go in the game. A combination of Phil Fisher and Larry Brown runs moved the football all the way to the Tigers’ 16yard line, where Arkansas Tech faced a fourth-and-6 play with just over two minutes remaining.
The game had been dominated by the Livingston State defensive front, which was led by Herbie Malone and Ricky Kemp. That unit made the deciding play, stopping an Arkansas Tech rush attempt for no gain as the Wonder Boys turned the ball over on downs with 2:10 to play. Tech did not go quietly. The Wonder Boy defense forced Livingston State into a punting situation, but rather than risk a blocked punt deep in his own territory Andrews instructed punter Bob Clark to allow himself to be chased out of the end zone for a safety. The Tigers’ lead was trimmed to 14-12 with 16 seconds to go. Benny Shepherd returned the ensuing free kick 30 yards to midfield, but two incomplete passes from there exhausted the remaining 10 seconds. “They whipped us good at the line of scrimmage,” Tech assistant coach Don Sevier told Bailey after the game. “And you know what happens when you get whipped there. You get beat.” Bailey’s lead in the Arkansas Gazette recap the following day stated that “Livingston State’s Tigers took too many things away from the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys, and at the end of it, Tech was deprived of everything.” In the disappointment of that moment, it probably did feel as though the Wonder Boys had lost all. But the passage of time has a way of making the picture clearer, and time has revealed this fact: the 1971 Wonder Boys stand among the greatest teams not only in Arkansas Tech history, but in the history of NAIA/NCAA Division II football in Arkansas.

Golden Suns win inaugural GAC volleyball title Is there anything sweeter than celebrating a conference championship on your arch rival’s home floor? Maybe just one thing — accomplishing that feat in come-from-behind fashion. Arkansas Tech clinched the inaugural Great American Conference volleyball championship with a 20-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-14, 16-14 victory over Harding University at Rhodes Field House in Searcy on Oct. 27.
