Faculty Award of Excellence for

Teaching

Dr. Jason Warnick

Associate Professor of Psychology Dr. Jason E. Warnick received his Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from the University of Mississippi in 2006 with an emphasis in Behavioral Neuroscience. He came to Arkansas Tech as an Assistant Professor in 2006, was promoted to Associate Professor in 2012, and was appointed as Director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning in 2015. He has prepared 15 unique courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level at Arkansas Tech University and has supervised both honors projects and masters theses. He has developed four courses for the eTech program. Two of these courses received a Diamond Award for Accomplished Work in Online Course Development from the Arkansas Blackboard Users Group and one course received Director’s Choice Award for Courses and Catalyst Award from the Blackboard Exemplary Course Program. His use of technology has also been recognized when he was named an Apple Distinguished Educator in 2017. In 2013, students voted for him to receive the SGA Professor of the Year. Dr. Warnick’s classes have a heavy emphasis on research projects and service learning. His scholarship frequently include student collaborators who have served as book co-editors, journal article co-authors, and co-presenters at professional conferences.

Faculty Award of Excellence for

Scholarship & Creative Activity Dr. Charles Mebi

Associate Professor of Chemistry Dr. Charles A. Mebi received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Chemistry from University of Buea, Cameroon in 1996 and 1998, respectively. He was awarded a Ph.D. in Chemistry in 2007 from the University of Nevada, Reno. He served as a post-doctoral research associate in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Arizona, Tucson. Dr. Mebi came to Arkansas Tech as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry in August 2009 and became a Tenured Associate Professor in 2015. At Arkansas Tech University, Dr. Mebi has mentored over 37 students in research, and authored 10 journal articles with 14 undergraduate students as co-authors. Dr. Mebi and his students have made over 44 presentations at national and international professional conferences. He received the Gold Poster Presentation Award at the Zing Coordination Chemistry Conference in Cancun, Mexico in 2013. Dr. Mebi’s research on biomimetic catalysts for hydrogen production, has been supported by over 42 grants including the prestigious American Chemical Society – Petroleum Research Fund award of $50,000. He has been an ad hoc reviewer for over 10 journals, and has served as a grant reviewer for the National Science Foundation, American Chemical Society, and Research Corporation for Science Advancement. Charles is a member of the American Chemical Society and the Royal Society of Chemistry. In 2013, Dr. Mebi was recognized as Professor of the Year by the Central Arkansas Section of the American Chemical Society.

Faculty Award of Excellence for

Service

Dr. Sean Huss

Associate Professor of Sociology Dr. Sean Huss holds a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Tennessee, with emphasis areas in social psychology and statistics. He also studied research methods and statistics at the University of Michigan and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill through the Interuniversity Consortium for Political and Social Research. A member of the Arkansas Tech University faculty since 2005, Huss was one of the co-principle investigators on the River Valley Meth Project, a coalition of 125 agencies to help bring together law enforcement and counseling programs to better deal with methamphetamine abuse in the community. As one of the lead investigators for the River Valley Meth Project, he was a co-recipient of the Award for Distinguished Service from the Office of the President of the United States. Huss also is the founding advisor and now serves as a co-advisor to Because We Can. This registered student organization (RSO) has collected and distributed more than 25,000 pounds of recovered food (creating 30,000 servings), coordinated food distribution for other food drives on campus, run multiple drives and written grants and received donations equaling more than $167,000 in the last year and a half. Because We Can, under Huss and co-advisor Dr. James Stobaugh, are also working to bring a campus pantry online for the fall 2017 term. Beyond the Because We Can efforts, Huss has also participated in numerous community-based projects like Uncommon Communities and the North El Paso Avenue development projects. The 2016-17 Faculty Senate chair at ATU, Huss is supervising several Faculty Senate projects including a rewriting of the promotion and tenure procedures and rewriting the student evaluation questions. Huss developed the ATU Master of Science degree in Applied Sociology. He serves as program director for Tech’s master’s degree programs in psychology and applied sociology. Huss has won several RSO awards for the Campus Kitchen Project, RSO advisor of the year, the Cupola Award from the Division of Student Services and the Faculty Award of Excellence in service for 2016.

Faculty Award of Excellence for

Teaching

Ester Leonard

Licensed Practical Nursing Ester Leonard received her M.S. in Nursing from Arkansas Tech University in 2014 and began teaching at Arkansas Tech-Ozark Campus in 2004. Currently, she is the Program Director of the Practical Nursing program. She teaches a variety of health science and nursing courses at the Ozark campus and satellite locations and works hard to give her students the skills they need to be successful as Licensed Practical Nurses. She is always on the lookout for new and exciting ways to incorporate new simulation technology and experiences into the Practical Nursing curriculum. In addition, her students regularly participate in United Way Day of Caring projects to benefit others in the River Valley, and they bring home awards every year from the Arkansas Licensed Practical Nurse Association annual conference and competitions. Ester tends to bring a spirit of excellence and giving as she teaches and leads.

Service

Nina Pope

Physical Therapy Assistant Nina Pope became a Physical Therapist in1982 and completed her Masters from ATU in 2012. She began her teaching career as the Program Director of the Physical Therapist Assistant at Arkansas Tech-Ozark Campus in May 2010. She teaches a variety of health science and PTA courses at the Ozark campus. Nina has been involved in numerous service projects. Each year her students collect socks during the holiday season for a local nursing home. They also serve at the annual Banquet at the Barn, which is a fundraiser for Equestrian Zone in Russellville offering horse therapy. They have also had fundraising pancake breakfasts that benefited Equestrian Zone and other local charities. In addition, her students have participated and raised money for the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and participated in Red Cross Tornado Relief fundraising. They regularly participate in the United Way Day of Caring to benefit others in the River Valley. Nina strives to create a spirit of service within her students as she sends them out to practice.
