Venture further west to traverse the Big Dam Bridge, North America’s longest pedestrianand bicycle-intended bridge. Trust us, it’s hard to miss. No matter what part of town you visit, you’ll never be far from our abundant outdoor spaces. Little Rock is also considered a “Top Ten” stop on the U.S. Civil Rights Trail, and you’ll find the stories of civil rights pioneers woven into the fabric of our city. At Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site, you can walk in the footsteps of nine children who would change the course of American history when they chose to seek a better education in 1957. We’ve got big-city heart with small-city love, and we’re ready to show you both. Though “little” may be in our name, you’re about to see why so many people are “Big” on Little Rock.

From the North Little Rock Convention & Visitors Bureau IN THE CITY OF NORTH LITTLE ROCK, WE LIKE TO SAY, “WE’RE ALWAYS UP TO SOMETHING,” AND YOU’LL FIND THAT TO BE TRUE. Nightlife, art and outdoors collide here. We make it easy to find what you need: visit our website, www.northlittlerock.org, download our free travel app (Explore North Little Rock!) and follow us on social (@exploreNLR) for upcoming events, nearby dining, insiders’ tips and recommendations. In the Argenta Arts District — our downtown Main Street area — you’ll find 10 local restaurants and breweries, theaters, shops and galleries. Hop on a vintagestyle yellow streetcar, enjoy libations and live music, and experience Argenta Plaza’s water features, swings and cool lights. Throughout downtown, you’ll see new murals by local artists popping up, including one with dogs proclaiming “Dogtown Proud” (it’s a long story, but we’re happy to tell it). North Little Rock is much bigger than our downtown, including the up-and-coming neighborhood of Park Hill; authentic Mexican and South American taquerias in our Levy neighborhood and breathtaking views of the Arkansas River from the Emerald Park cliffs.

Voted “Best Park” and runner-up “Best Place to Mountain Bike” in Arkansas by Arkansas Times readers, Burns Park is an impressive 1,700-acre park with golf and disc golf courses, dog park, pedestrian trails, tennis courts and numerous playgrounds. The Arkansas River Trail is a scenic 17-mile loop crossing pedestrian and cyclistfriendly bridges. Even take a guided sunset kayak tour or stand-up paddleboard yoga on the Arkansas River.

Stretch your legs on these scenic trails W

hether you jog, run, walk or bike, Central Arkansas has a trail with your name on it. The region is full of great routes, many of

them paved, that wind through the area. Explore the natural beauty of Arkansas, scale the side of a mountain or take a brisk stroll through the city; whatever you choose, you’re sure to enjoy the view.

GET BACK TO NATURE

Some of the best hiking in the state awaits you at Pinnacle Mountain State Park, west of the city near Roland. In addition to open greenspace and picnic areas at the base of the mountain, there are two routes to the top. On the east side, find a winding, walkable trail that’s suitable for a wider range of ages and fitness levels. The east side features an invigorating bouldering climb to the top. Mountain bikers will want to check out Monument Trails as well, while road cyclists enjoy the winding highways surrounding the park

For an even more rugged experience, go up the road a bit to Rattlesnake Ridge, a natural area that’s drawing raves from hikers and trail runners alike. You’ll get winded hiking the ‘Snake, but you’ll have stunning views to look at while you catch your breath. Two Rivers Park rests at the confluence of the Arkansas and Little Maumelle rivers and is a popular cycling destination. It also provides a leisurely walking trail by which to take in the beautiful scenery. Or, you can rent a kayak from Rock Town River Outfitters at the Two Rivers Bridge and paddle the Little Maumelle or Arkansas rivers.

CITY LIVING

The Arkansas River Trail is a masterpiece of urban engineering and is accessible at multiple points starting in downtown and many points west. Along this route, you’ll find the Big Dam Bridge, the longest pedestrian and bicycle bridge built specifically for that use in North America. The BDB is a popular pet-friendly destination for locals at all times of the year, cooled as it is by river breezes 90 feet above the water. It links the Little Rock and North Little Rock sides of the Arkansas River Trail. Don’t forget your furry friends! Little Rock offers two municipal dog runs, oneatdowntown’sMacArthur Park, the other at Rebsamen Park along the Arkansas River Trail. Burns Park, across the Big Dam Bridge, offers another enclosed space where Fido can burn off some energy.

Little Rock features hundreds of acres of parkland, from hidden neighborhood pockets to sprawling expanses such as War Memorial Park in the heart of Midtown. WMP gives the runner or walker plenty of space and a decent elevation change to get the blood pumping. On the North Little Rock side, the mammoth Burns Park offers something for everyone, be it ball fields, hiking/biking trails, skateboarding and even its own

and paved — many of which are less than a mile in length. Hikers will also want to explore the mountains that surround the city by tackling the trails that run through the national park. Hot Springs and North Mountain trails are easy to reach from downtown and provide scenic views. Trails on West Mountain are less traveled, providing greater opportunities

ARKANSAS DEPT OF PARKS HERITAGE AND TOURISM

The official recognition of Hot Springs National Park in 1916 had its roots in various formal designations beginning in 1803. But enjoyment of the area’s thermal spring water goes back among indigenous peoples for thousands of years. Today, the Spa City offers a variety of entertainment and recreation, not the least of which are the abundant hiking and biking routes. Here, you can ride your mountain bike on some of the most acclaimed runs in the country. Northwoods Trail System offers 26 miles with something for all skill levels, conveniently accessible via five trailheads. Northwoods is home to the annual Gudrun MTB Festival each November and is open to hikers and trail runners as well as two-wheeled traffic. For those visiting with kids or who are beginners to cycling, visit the Hot Springs Creek Greenway Trail, a 2.5mile gem that will eventually connect downtown to the wetlands of Lake Hamilton, also for use on foot. Or, try Entergy Park offering familyfriendly beginner trails — both off-road The Big Dam Bridge

for wildlife sightings. Or for the ultimate challenge, take on the Sunset Trail, the longest trail in Hot Springs National Park, covering approximately 10 miles one-way or in a 15- to 17-mile loop. Not up for that? Take it a section at a time, including West Mountain (2.8 miles), Sugarloaf Mountain (2.6 miles) and Stonebridge Road (3.8 miles). n

THE HEIGHTS T

he Heights’ original residents were well-heeled folk who came here to their second cottages during the heat of summer to enjoy the cool breezes founds at this higher altitude. It’s still one of the most prestigious addresses in the city, where remnant posh cottages can be found mixed in with the elegant and stylish homes that have sprung up over the years. The Heights represents the ideal in heritage neighborhood living, with pretty-as-a-postcard tree-lined streets and a walkable commercial district that offers everything a neighborhood could want.

SEE & DO

BRIAN CHILSON

Beyond the shops and eateries, the ritzy historic dwellings that comprise the Heights are worth their own driving or walking tour. This should include gargoyle-spotting at the Catholic Diocese of Little Rock, the century-old former St. John’s Seminary. Heights folks love their events and festivals and the neighborhood association regularly shuts down Kavanaugh Boulevard, the neighborhood’s main drag, for Handmade in the Heights, Chili Fights in the Heights and Cinco de Heights, to name a few. Every July 4, the Heights hosts the Firecracker Fast 5K, the only all-downhill race in hilly Little Rock. All summer long, visit the Westover Hills Farmers Market, operating Tuesday evenings May to September; grab a bite from the food trucks nearby while you shop. Monthly, there’s Thursday Night in the Heights for merchant specials, food and music, and the holidays bring out their own special events as merchants put on their finery. But you don’t need an excuse to make your own holiday; grab the girls for pampering at Caracalla Spa and a makeover at Red Beauty Lounge, then enjoy a private studio session at The Painted Pig. Or take the fellas to Heights Golf for their virtual driving range, then refuel with pizza and beer at nearby Damgoode Pies.

HILLCREST O

nce sharing a township designation called Pulaski Heights with the Heights neighborhood to the north, Hillcrest has since developed a vibe and identity all its own. An area that grew up with the streetcar, Hillcrest’s main artery is Kavanaugh Boulevard, a wide, winding street that evokes images of the streetcar bringing residents from their downtown offices to the large, lovely homes in Little Rock’s first suburban neighborhood. Today, Hillcrest is roughly divided into two portions: the upper Hillcrest and the lower Stifft Station. Both segments are walkable, tree-lined neighborhoods where craftsman-bungalow porches ooze the laid-back, hospitable vibe endemic to the South.

Hillcrest residents love their quaint shops and friendly neighborhood eateries, all within an easy walk of their homes. Easily the biggest event of the year is the fall Harvestfest, where good food, music and the locals make this one of Arkansas’s best festivals. Smaller events and holiday celebrations, hosted by the many local churches in the neighborhood, are also well-attended. First Thursday is another beloved neighborhood tradition featuring merchant specials, pop-up food and beverage and entertainment each month. And, any opening night for the latest local art show at Gallery 26 is sure to bring a crowd and a live band. The ample greenspace in this hilly, tree-filled neighborhood also makes it a destination for park-goers; Allsopp Park is one-part woods, abundant with hiking trails, and the other part recreational, with a ballpark, playground and all the amenities you need to roast hot dogs and s’mores. Knoop Park, tucked away at the northernmost end of Hillcrest, has the best skyline view of downtown Little Rock. And don’t miss the Hillcrest Farmers Market, which brings local produce stands, baked goods and crafters to the boulevard during growing season every Saturday.

The Big Dam Bridge may seem like an unlikely gathering place, but in Riverdale you’ll be hardpressed to find a more diverse set of people who turn out nightly to walk the longest pedestrian bridge in North America. Visitors and locals trace it over the Arkansas River and back on foot or bike or just sit on one of the benches and watch the water roll by. The bridge sits at the northwest end of Rebsamen Park, which get heavy use by the surrounding neighborhoods for its fishing, soccer fields, pavilions, play areas, green space, dog park and Rebsamen Golf Course, a municipal 18-hole course featuring Champion Bermuda greens. Rebsamen also offers a nine-hole executive course, with Tri-Dwarf Bermuda greens. The Big Dam Bridge and Rebsamen Park are points along the Arkansas River Trail, an 88-mile loop that connects Little Rock and North Little Rock. Burns Park, on the north side of the river, is the largest municipal park in Arkansas, and is accessible from the Little Rock side by crossing the Big Dam Bridge. For nighttime entertainment, check out what’s showing at Riverdale 10 VIP Cinema while enjoying your favorite beer or wine with the flick. Seeking weekend fun into the wee hours? Beyond that lies an eclectic group of eateries sure to please. Try Boulevard Bread Company for artisan breads like rustic Italian ciabatta, baguettes and white sourdough, baked fresh daily. You’ll Rock N Roll Sushi love the authentic street fare at Mockingbird Bar & Tacos, sourced and made from scratch. More local ingredients can be had at The Root Cafe serving farm-to-table style favorites like biscuits and gravy for breakfast and spicy veggie banh mi sandwiches for lunch. Or, enjoy sushi with an attitude at Rock N Roll Sushi. For acclaimed cuisine with a Southern gothic touch, try South on Main, one of the most critically acclaimed restaurants in Little Rock. here that even many locals don’t know about — the state’s incredible musical legacy.

or a state whose population only recently cracked 3 million, Arkansas and its people have played an outsized role in the development of nearly every musical genre out there. That’s been the lesson of “Arkansongs,” a syndicated radio program I’ve hosted for nearly 25 years. here are places to explore Arkansas’s musical heritage, such as Little Rock’s Old State House Museum downtown, which opened its “Play It Loud: Concerts At Barton Coliseum” exhibit this summer, and has many artifacts. And the beat goes on, so it’s also found in the city’s music venues — several of which are situated just east of the museum — and across the state, from front porches to stadia. The longevity of a program like “Arkansongs” speaks not only to the diverse and deep musical artistry found in the area, but also to the area’s independent media and its supporters. “Arkansongs” began life as a sprawling live Sunday night radio show on KABF-FM, 88.3, a longstanding 100,000-watt community station. It’s a treasure that broadcasts into most of the state. With my co-host, former rock ’n’ roll DJ Keith Merckx, no one at the station batted an eye as we played blues, rap, hillbilly and opera, all in one segment. (Merckx still produces episodes of “Arkansongs” to this day.) Likewise, when “Arkansongs” moved to public radio and whittled down to a 7 1/2-minute feature, station honchos at KUAR-FM, 89.1, Little Rock’s National Public Radio affiliate (the late Ben Fry and the late Ron Breeding), knew the program was going to be eclectic by nature and embraced it. Little Rock is fortunate to have several community-minded, and community-supported, media voices — including the Arkansas Times — telling the many different stories of its people here in the capital city and beyond. So, whether you are just visiting, or already live here, make sure finding out about Arkansas music — and enjoying it — is part of your time in The Natural State! n (Stephen Koch is writer/host of public radio’s “Arkansongs,” and also a journalist, musician, illustrator and author of Louis Jordan: “Son of Arkansas, Father of R&B.”) VISITORS GUIDE • 2022

atmosphere. And as this industry continues to grow, more and more of these fun locations are coming on line. Here’s your guide to some of the best craft beer and small-batch wine in the state.

BREWERIES

BLADE & BARREL (Jacksonville) One of the newest breweries in central Arkansas, Blade & Barrel combines great pizza, tasty beer and a throwback barber shop. Sound interesting? It gets better – because B&B sits in a dry county, it’s officially a “Private Club” (but one that’s really easy to get into). So go have a pint and feel bougie for an evening. Recommended Brews: Buzz Leichtbier, Air Force Juan

BURKS BROTHERS BREWING (Bryant) A funky little joint that’s a little off the beaten path but well worth the trip. Food trucks are usually nearby to give you something to nosh while you enjoy delicious, well-made beers. And you can’t beat their slogan: E Pluribus Brew’um. We’ll drink to that. Recommended Brews: Brews rotate; check Facebook to see what’s on tap. DIAMOND BEAR BREWING (Argenta) Another longtime staple of the craft beer scene, Diamond Bear serves up reliable, consistently good beer and tasty food that’s

short on frills and long on flavor. Take a tour of the brewery and then settle in at the on-premises Arkansas Ale House for a pint and a sandwich. The burger of the day is a can’t-miss, as is the club sandwich. Not into beer? Try one of Diamond Bear’s excellent seltzers. Recommended Brews: Presidential IPA, BLU Golden Lager FLYWAY BREWERY (Argenta) Flyway puts its Arkansas heritage on its sleeve for all to see. The beer is a tribute to the land and its grains, and many brews are named with Arkansas lore as backstory. As for the food to be had at the original taproom — it's so Arkansas-centric that with the right hunting license, you can bag every protein on the menu within The Natural State. Newbies should try the

BRIAN CHILSON

BUBBA BREWS ON LAKE HAMILTON (Hot Springs) What do you get when you combine fresh craft beer, stunning lake views and one of the best party decks around? Bubba Brews, that’s what. This scenic spot, located on the shores of Lake Hamilton in Hot Springs,

offers a huge menu for everyone in your party. Try a little shuffleboard or cornhole on the deck, or just watch the sun go down. Recommended Brews: Arkie Amber, Skullcrusher IPA

Rock Town Distillery

WINERIES

famous gumbo nachos. Recommend Brews: Free Range Brown Ale, Bluewing Berry Wheat

AN ENCHANTING EVENING WINERY (Roland) Perched on a mountainside with a stunning view of the valley below, a visit to An Enchanting Evening is as relaxing as it gets. Choose from several wines available by the glass and take home a bottle to remind you of your visit. In fact, take home two bottled, they’ll make more. Recommended Selections: Traminette (semisweet white); Pinot Noir (dry red)

STONE’S THROW BREWING (Downtown and Stifft Station in Hillcrest) If you want to feel a true neighborhood vibe, visit either of Stone’s Throw’s taprooms, nestled unobtrusively into their respective areas. Here you’ll find friendly patrons, most of whom walked to the taproom from their nearby house or apartment. Game nights and food trucks are often on tap along with an impressive number of house beers. Recommended Brews: Vienna Lager, Shamus Stout STUD DUCK BEERS (Lonsdale) Like to exercise your conscience while you wet your whistle? Stud Duck Beers’ attitude of sustainability and repurposing materials is on display right down to the converted shipping containers that house the taproom. Visit them out in the woods between Benton and Hot Springs and see how tasty green living can be. Recommended Brews: Amendment 21 Lemon Wheat, Ol’ Hickory Nut Brown

BRIAN CHILSON

LOST FORTY BREWING (East Village) The big daddy of Arkansas craft beer, Lost Forty has outgrown every brewery in the state and is one of the most-recognized and awarded beer makers in the state. Visit the original taproom and restaurant for a beer hall-stye setting featuring fresh tasty brews and chef-inspired cuisine. The Sunday brunch is a popular choice. Up the street, try the new Camp Taco at Lost Forty Brewing offering street food and experimental beers. Recommended Brews: Love Honey Bock, Rockhound IPA

Stone’s Throw Brewing VINO’S BREWPUB (Downtown Little Rock) The one that started it all, this funky corner pizza joint was the first to brew its own beer, well ahead of the trend. The place still does it the same way — with attitude — producing delicious beers to go with equally tasty pizzas and calzones. It’s a place that looks and feels like a good time. Catch one of the frequent musical acts, if you like it loud. Recommend Brews: Firehouse Pale Ale, Ouachita ESB

RUSTY TRACTOR VINEYARDS (Little Rock) The new kid in the vineyard, Rusty Tractor has quickly become a favorite in Central Arkansas. Offering excellent wines in a serene surrounding, it’s someplace to spend an hour or an entire day. Recommended Selections: Mosaic Red Blend, Pinot Grigio

DISTILLERY

CRYSTAL RIDGE DISTILLERY This comfortable spot delivers good times in a lodge-like setting. Relax in the saloon while you enjoy a custom-crafted cocktail from CRD’s talented corps of barkeeps. On your way out, select your favorite moonshine – either flavored or the way Grampa took it – which are all made on premises. Recommended Selection: Mule Kick Moonshine

SUPERIOR BATHHOUSE BREWERY (Hot Springs) The first brewery to be located inside a National Park, Superior Bathhouse Brewery operates out of a gorgeously restored space on Hot Springs’s legendary Bathhouse Row. Squarely in the heart of the city’s historic district, the people-watching is almost as good as the beer. Almost. Recommended Brews: Killer Irish Red, Space Force Hazy IPA

HOT SPRINGS DISTILLERY (Hot Springs) The newest of central Arkansas’s distilleries, HSD produces lively spirits out of its small production facility. Check out a weekend tasting and see what the buzz is about. Recommended Selection: Bear Clap Bourbon

BRIAN CHILSON

SQZBX (Hot Springs) This family-run joint epitomizes the word “funky.” SQZBX is short for “Squeezebox” but there’s nothing short about the food or beer menu. Choose your favorite pie and get a growler to go for the perfect Spa City meal. Recommended Brews: Welder’s Sunburn Red Ale, Summer Break American Pale Ale.

RIVER BOTTOM WINERY AT BOBROOK FARMS (Roland) Tucked into a working farm, River Bottom Winery offers a slow-paced afternoon of tasting your favorites surrounded by friends. Specializing in fruit wines, many made from produce grown on premises, you taste the pride in every hand-crafted bottle. Plus, you won’t find nicer people or a warmer welcome anywhere in Central Arkansas. Recommended Selections: Chardonnay, Cabernet

Diamond Bear Brewing Co.

ROCK TOWN DISTILLERY (Little Rock) The first legal distillery in Arkansas since Prohibition, Rock Town has been making up for lost time in building the reputation for quality craft spirits in Arkansas. Awarded multiple times in prestigious competitions and publications, this stylish joint in SoMa has set the bar for spirits in the region. Take the tour, taste the product and thank us later. Recommended Selection: Arkansas Bourbon (try it in an Old Fashioned in the tasting room). VISITORS GUIDE • 2022
