h, June. It’s the optimum time for entertaining, and a glorious respite before the really oppressive temperatures set in, the mosquitoes descend and you’re afflicted with that annual case of heat-induced adult acne. (Just me?) There’s much to celebrate this month, including Father’s Day, the arrival of summer and, most exciting of all, a new line of jewelry by the very talented Renee Williams. The sweet little resin sparrows she creates for her pendants are amazing. I also share with you my love of maps, though I admit when it actually comes to reading one, I’m useless. I can still appreciate them aesthetically, right? The “editor’s picks” you see here are a first, but this month I couldn’t help myself. I’m so genuinely excited about these products that I just had to share. It’s a sampling of what I’m loving this summer and think you will, too. Lucky en plein air.

aki Hockersmith needs no introduction, but we’ll give her one anyway. Ms. Hockersmith has been delivering award-winning design for over 30 years, and the accolades keep coming—most recently in the form of six regional ASID Awards. She has designed numerous private residences across the country from Florida to California, and her commercial work has included retail stores, banks and restaurants. This month Hockersmith graciously invited us into the home of two very special clients — stepdaughter Mary and her husband Chris Michaels. Here, she shares with us the dramatic before and after of this award-winning bathroom overhaul. (Now, if Kaki could just get her hands on that man cave in the backhouse ... )
The mission: To transform a small, very dated bath into a more functional one, replacing obsolete and unsafe fixtures and materials and providing excellent lighting and storage while incorporating the best in today’s

styles, products and finishes.
How they did it: Kaki and team ... Created a new floor plan and lighting plan. Installed a custom designed vanity with metallic painted finish and glass tile splash. Custom designed a storage tower with metallic painted finish mirrored door and divided and lined jewelry drawer. Added a frameless glass and marble partition between the whirlpool and shower. Installed a Caesar stone vanity top, wall-mount faucet and sconces. Positioned the vanity mirror so that it reflects the original art and adjustable woven window shade. Used glass and mirrors to contribute to a spacious appearance.
Client
CUE: Before setting out, did you have definite ideas about what you wanted? Mary Michaels: I didn’t have specific ideas of what I wanted, only a general desire for a modern, glamorous look with a well-functioning floor plan that would accommodate a whirlpool tub and provide storage. I worked with Kaki on the project, and, after conveying this general idea, I let her design the bathroom and really tried to stay out of her way so that I did not impede her creativity. In fact, we didn’t even know what the tile colors or wall covering selections were until our builder delivered them! Needless to say, we were very pleased and loved the selections.

CUE: Any challenges along the way? MM: The bathroom was a typical Heights bungalow bathroom that hadn’t been updated since it was built in 1935. The demolition proved much more challenging than originally thought given that the walls, floors and shower stall were made of thick concrete, which was difficult to remove.* Upon removing, we discovered this had put excessive weight on the floor joists. As a result, we ended up taking everything down to the studs, replacing the pipes and updating the electrical among other things. We were also able to reconfigure the space to remove inefficient storage and replace it with a fully functional vanity and stand alone armoire, which added very useful storage to a relatively small room.

CUE: What do you like best about the new bathroom? MM: My favorite part of the bathroom design is the use of glass and mirrors, which is both beautiful and adds to the spacious appearance. Despite the challenges and extra expense due to the age of the home, I think we ended up with a great end result that not only looks gorgeous but is up to today’s standards in terms of safety, technology and storage.

The flowering of an artist’s already vibrant repertoire
I
n her most recent novel, The Bradshaw Variations, British author Rachel Cusk writes, “Art is the opposite of waste or redundancy.” Repeated visits to Gallery 26 bear this out. Never do you see the same thing, and treasures always lie in wait. For over 15 years Gallery 26 has represented some of Central Arkansas’ most cutting edge and innovative artists—this includes the work of gallery owner Renee Williams. Renee, who herself looks as though she stepped out of a Pre-Raphaelite portrait, is an accomplished painter and now jewelry designer. Her unique pieces range from pendants to rings, and her style is wide-reaching; she incorporates images from pop culture, vintage finds and original resin creations inspired by nature. Simply put, this is some seriously cool jewelry. CUE: Have you been interested in making art since childhood? Renee Williams: Yes, I came from a very artistic family. My parents both encouraged me to draw and paint, and we always had lots of art supplies around the house. My grandmother was an art professor, and my sister and I even sat in on some of her college classes as little kids. She encouraged us to try new materials. We melted crayons onto paper, we did paper mâché, collage, oil pastels, clay, etc. Because my grandmother was also a Humanities teacher, we were also encouraged to think about art. Not just the history of art, but what art can say. CUE: What or who inspires you? Who are your influences? RW: I am continually inspired every time I walk into the gallery. We change out work every other month, and I get to see what new and wonderful things have been created by the artists. (I have the best job!) I am inspired by local artists Kathy Strause, David Warren and Stephen Cefalo, among many others. I love the paintings of Mark Ryden and Odd Nerdrum because of their extensive use of symbolism. I have been working on art that is about communication via symbols, mainly communication with different aspects of one’s own psyche, which can come
Renee poses by a recent work in her gallery. to us from our dreams and from the synchronicities and symbolism present in daily life. CUE: I know that you’ve started making jewelry, too. Is that something you’ve always wanted to do? RW: Actually, I made a few pieces of jewelry in college in the ’80s when giant earrings were popular. ( I still have an awful pair that is black and yellow zebra stripes.) I started making some collage pins shortly after that, using old photos and toys. Now I use a combination of vintage and handmade materials and make necklaces and rings. I especially like finding the old children’s celluloid pins from the 1930s to convert into pendants. I like using polymer clay in my pieces and have recently started learning to do

resin casting. CUE: How would you describe the local art scene? RW: Little Rock has an admirably vibrant and supportive art community that all Arkansans should be proud of. We get a lot of visitors to Gallery 26 from other cities, and I hear a lot of compliments on the quality of work shown in Little Rock galleries. I find that the artists here in our city are very supportive of each other, rather than being overly competitive. Artists share information on techniques, go to each other’s receptions and look out for each other in the business world. We also have a lot of artists who are not afraid of doing experimental or less traditional work. CUE: Describe your home studio. RW: My studio is at home and has a giant drawing board easel that Mary Cockrill gave me years ago, an old kitchen table loaded down with vintage jewelry pieces, chains, and beads, and piles of paints and books. I have a wire strung across the wall with finished drawings pinned up and a very old stuffed chair. I share the studio with my husband, Chris, and his desk is piled up with his librarian projects, music CDs, movies, and even more books. I often have the old movie channel on. J U NE 2010

C&F Flooring: A place where pet and carpet hang in harmony
O
ne look at Lucy, C&F Flooring’s shop dog, and you might assume that the C and F stand for “cute and furry.” Though Lucy may be both, the name comes from business partners/husband and wife team Carol and Fred Auger. During our visit, Lucy, basking in a pool of sunlight by the front door, suddenly snaps to attention, ears erect and tail wagging at something or someone outside. Peach, the UPS man? Another dog? No, this kind of welcome is reserved for her beloved— Fred. Of the unique bond between the two,
Carol says, “Whenever Fred is out of town or gone for any length of time, she won’t eat; she gets depressed; she walks around, moping; she stares out the window.” It seems that she’s either with him, or pining for him. Carol smiles,“ Wherever Fred is, she is. He takes her everywhere. For years he took her around in his truck whenever he went to measure a job.” We imagine she makes a fine companion, though at present, Lucy’s shedding enough fur to weave a small throw rug; it comes out by the fistful, wafting off her back like so

many Texas tumbleweeds. Carol explains that her daughter, 5-year-old Laura, gave Lucy a bath the night before and failed to brush her. Of daughter and dog, Carol says, “Laura loves her. She tries to dress [Lucy] up, put ribbons on her, play house, and Lucy’s very patient with her.” A breed of her own Of her breed, Carol teases, “Fred says she’s a wild dingo, but I don’t think she is.” They actually think she’s something closer to a Rottweiler-Pit Bull mix, though she doesn’t really look the part. Fred got Lucy from one of his customers when she was a year old. Though now in her twilight years, 11 or 12, she shows little sign of slowing down. “She’s still pretty peppy. She still jumps over the wall in the backyard,” Fred says. Carol adds, “She’ll still chase the tennis ball. She’s pretty playful. But when she runs, she hops like a kangaroo, so if you see a dog in Allsopp Park that looks like a kangaroo, it’s Lucy.” Among other pastimes, she enjoys chasing (or hopping after) squirrels. At the mere mention of the word, her ears perk up, and her head cocks to the side.
A lark (or deer) Chasing squirrels is one thing, but deer? That’s quite another. Fred relays a funny anecdote about Lucy’s runin with some of the wildlife that occasionally comes up from the river—all of it captured on the security footage. “We got her on the surveillance camera herding a deer that made its way onto the property. She was chasing it, and then the deer turned around and started chasing her,” he recounts. “There may be some shepherd in her, after all,” considers Carol.

When not ejecting trespassers from the premises, Lucy may be found making the rounds in Riverdale. “Our clients know her and love her, and everyone in the complex feeds her. ... she likes to go to Cajun’s,” says Carol. (Presumably for dancing and cocktails.) We suddenly recognize her as the dog we saw hanging around puposefully outside SoHo Modern several months ago. She looked like she owned the place.
