NEW IN TOWN BY MICHAEL ROBERTS
CORE iD A MODERN LIFESTYLE STORE 3700 Old Cantrell Rd., Ste. 103 501-944-2535 coreidhome.com Located in the growing Riverdale design district, Core iD is a one-stop shop for furniture, accessories and gifts that is sure to be a hit with decorators and everyday shoppers alike. Featuring brands like Ligne Roset, Alessi, Tom Dixon, FLOS, Muuto, Moooi and Walter K., the design team also offers free local delivery and set up for both residential and commercial customers. The company has also hosted numerous design events since opening in the spring of 2016. Customers are invited to meet representatives from brands the store carries — and everyone is invited.
LA TERRAZA RUM & LOUNGE 3000 Kavanaugh Blvd., Ste. 202 501-251-8261 Folks in Hillcrest were saddened to see Acadia Restaurant go out of business, but the space rebounded nicely with La Terraza Rum & Lounge, a new venture that is the work of Venezuelan couple Carlos Valdivieso and Ana Lara along with co-owners Armando and Sarah Bolanos. The team took a restaurant concept they operated in Caracas, Venezuela for more than 20 years and moved it right into the heart of one of Little Rock’s favorite neighborhoods. Delicious dishes including arepas (a stuffed corn-flour pocket sandwich) and Reina Pepiada (an arepa with shredded chicken, avocado and a housemade mayonnaise/mustard blend) have proven popular, as have more familiar dishes like beef tenderloin carpaccio.
The Latin American-Mediterranean dinner menu offers authentic dishes made with plantains and yucca alongside dishes like Pabellon Criollo, a shredded beef and black beans over rice dish that has been called the national dish of Venezuela.
OLD HEIGHTS CORNER STORE 5919 Kavanaugh Blvd. 501-313-5700 oldheights.com Take one 1950s-era basketball court, turn it into the interior of a high-end footwear store, add a bunch of athletic memorabilia, then drop the whole thing into one of Little Rock’s classic neighborhoods and you’ve got Old Heights Corner Store. The store is operated by the folks behind Rock City Kicks, who started their store (which is now in West Little Rock) not far from where OHCS now stands. The store is looking for a return to the neighborly feel of yesteryear, but that doesn’t mean the selection is old-fashioned. Great sneakers, clothing, headwear and local brand Arkansasocks make for a great shopping experience, and the store’s focus on in-house customers (there are no phone or internet sales) means that everyone who walks through the door immediately becomes the most important person in the room.

kBIRD 600 N. Tyler St. 501-352-3549 Serving the items that made his food truck so popular — pad thai, red curry, green curry, hang lay curry — has turned Richard Glasgow’s brick-and-mortar version of kBird into a go-to spot for great Thai food in Hillcrest. “I always felt limited in the food truck to do everything I wanted to do, like properly present or have dishes meant to be eaten right away served in an environment where people can eat them immediately,” says Richard, a former lawyer who began cooking Thai food in Washington, D.C. The restaurant has been able to branch out in its new space, offering unique-toLittle-Rock dishes like Dtom Yam Goong, a complexly flavored gulf shrimp soup built on a chicken and pork stock and flavored with chilies, fish sauce, Thai chili sauce, lime juice, galangal, lemongrass and lime leaves. It’s a delicious addition to one of the city’s tastiest neighborhoods.

IZARD CHOCOLATE 623 Beechwood St. 501-352-5834 izard-chocolate.myshopify.com Although Izard Chocolate has been making delicious chocolate since 2014, Nathaniel Izard’s company has really come into its own within the past year. Izard’s chocolate bars appear on shelves all over the state, and a collaboration with artisan ice cream maker Loblolly Creamery proved to be the stuff of local foodie legend. Izard has since expanded its repertoire into a line of caramels (coffee, ginger and salted flavors) as well as wonderful flavors of chocolate available in bar-form. Nathaniel started making chocolate in his own kitchen; these days he sells his wares from a quaint Hillcrest storefront, online and in specialty shops across Arkansas.

JOEY EDWARDS SALON 5817 Kavanaugh Blvd., 501-336-5559 joeyedwardssalon.com In an area of town known for being fashionable, the sleekly remodeled building that’s become the home of Joey Edwards Salon fits right in. It takes more than a great-looking location to survive in the Heights, though — but given the rave reviews that Joey Edwards, Katie McKnight and Heather Young have received on social media and elsewhere, the salon seems to be the total package. The salon was also a winner in the 2016 Arkansas Times Readers Choice poll. Offering the latest in styling, color and products in a relaxing environment, the dedicated folks at Joey Edwards Salon guarantee that no matter what you come in looking like, you’ll leave stylish, confident and sure to turn heads. There’s never been a better time to explore a new look — a you won’t find a more enthusiastic group of stylists anywhere.
PROSPECT BAR & GRILL 5501 Kavanaugh Blvd., Ste. G 501-603-0080 It appears the Chi family of restaurateurs has landed a winner with the latest incarnation of its space at 5501 Kavanaugh Blvd., the Prospect Bar and Grill. Formerly Oishi Hibachi, and before that RJ Tao, the new restaurant is a family-friendly place offering twists on bar food, such as the Barnyard “Ham” Burger, which includes slices of ham and cheese atop the beef (you can add an egg to that, too); chicken and pork butt from Prospect’s own smokers; appetizers that range from chili cheese fries to a citrus avocado salad (for the “tennis ladies,” bar manager and Chi consultant Shaun Halloran said, though he’s seen some petit eaters dig into the chili fries, too); beef tenderloin and truffle fries, and more, as well as a menu for kids. Halloran, who has been with the Chis for
two years and has a long history in the Little Rock restaurant business, said the idea was to “bring something to the Heights that fit the neighborhood,” and what fits better than a place to eat and drink and watch television on a Razorback game night? That night came just a few days after Prospect’s opening, and was a trial by fire. “Game day was absolutely out of control,” Halloran said. “We were so blessed that everybody was having a good time.” New to the layout is a stage for “subtle” live music and Karaoke and a game room with pool tables. The bar is going for highquality drinks, with fresh juices in its fruity drinks, including vodka infusions with fresh strawberries and watermelon, and there’s no mix in the margaritas, Halloran said. Prospect is open 11 a.m. until closing Monday through Saturday and noon until on Sunday.
RANSOM INTERIORS 5501 Kavanaugh Blvd., Ste. A 501-838-7267 ransominteriors.com After two years of prep work by partners Joshua Plumlee, Julie Smith and Laura Borg, Ransom Interiors is now open for business in the Heights with a mission to “refine a new look for the city.” According to Joshua, response from the neighborhood has been fantastic, with customers taking good advantage of Ransom’s hybrid mix of retail shopping and design consulting. “We can do everything from helping customers shop to going out to their houses and helping,” says Joshua. “Just set up an appointment.” The Ransom team has created a mix of things for the home to suit any style, price point and taste. “Our inventory is vintage, custom or can be customized,” Joshua says. “We also have art available, including some of my own pieces. We’re here to make the process of beautifying your home easy and enjoyable.” n

JILL RICCIARDONE FEINSTEIN’S 5600 Kavanaugh Blvd., Ste. 4, 501-664-7330 feinsteins.com Jill Ricciardone, third-generation owner of Heights clothing institution Feinstein’s, says the bond with the store’s clientele — and
still appreciates customer interactions most. “The thing that appeals to me most about this business is the people,” she says. “Providing a service to people I care about is what makes this job important to me, whether it’s for a special occasion or even just every day. Making someone feel good or more confident is what provides the joy in my work.”
LARRY JORDAN
COURTESY TULIPS
TULIPS 5817 Kavanaugh Blvd., 501-614-7343 tulipsarkansas.com Emily Brown opened Tulips 14 years ago, and in the time since has grown the boutique into a neighboring space and 10 full- and part-time employees. She credits the neighborhood as a big reason why. “The people that shop here, live here. The locals keep the neighborhood in rotation,” she says. Emily came to the neighborhood in 2002, newly married. She noticed the neighborhood was lacking a contemporary boutique. She opened the store that October and has been delivering Southern style with a side of girl power ever since. “We are the girly girls,” she says with a laugh. “Keeping the store current and creative moves people and makes them want to come in and shop. Tulips is built on family; we work in an environment where women support women. We have a huge level of respect for one another and for our customers.” The square footage and the marketing tools may have evolved with the times — social media has helped grow orders outside of Arkansas substantially — but Emily’s business philosophy is the same. “Every time a customer walks through those doors, they are welcomed with open arms,” she says. “My favorite quote is, ‘Throw kindness around like confetti,’ and that’s the feeling I hope you get when you walk into my store.”
Emily Brown, Tulips fellow neighborhood merchants — is the best and most vital element of being in business. “Community is the cornerstone of what makes this business work,” she says. “Our customers are friends, neighbors, people we care about — not just strangers coming in the door. The businesses that comprise our neighborhood support one another and together we provide needed services for our neighborhood, city and state.” Jill grew up in the retail business. Her maternal grandmother opened Feinstein’s California Casuals in 1957 in a newly-developed area called Pulaski Heights. The store was unlike anything Little Rock had ever seen or would see for decades. “Our customers are unique because they are often generations of customers,” Jill says. “After 60 years in business, we know entire families. And working with my mother solidifies that experience for me.” After 26 years in the family business, she
FABULOUS FINDS ANTIQUE MALL 2905 Cantrell Rd., 501-614-8181 fabulousfindsantiques.com A cornerstone of the Riverdale business community, Fabulous Finds owner Larry Jordan has been around long enough to have seen some things. He says improvements in the neighborhood and cooperation among merchants makes the district better than ever for business. “[Riverdale] is very convenient and does not have the large amount of traffic congestion that West Little Rock has,” he says. “Our business has been located in Riverdale for approximately 15 years, and we have seen the area grow and improve. And, to our benefit, it has grown into somewhat of a design district.” Larry says the neighborhood’s easy proximity to downtown is another plus, as Fabulous Finds regularly sees trade from visitors to Little Rock. “We get lots of out-of-towners touring the Clinton Library, and Riverdale is convenient for them to visit also,” he says, “We hear so many times from customers, ‘My home is filled with fabulous finds from your mall.’ That makes it all worth the work and long hours.” Contributing to Fabulous Finds’ longevity is its 40-plus vendors, which allows the mall to stock items that appeal to a wide range of demographics. “Our customers range from younger to older. That seems to never change,” Larry says. “We can usually find that ‘fabulous find’ HEIGHTS • HILLCREST • RIVERDALE • 2016

or you’re driving to this area, the fact you can eat, shop, get a haircut, et cetera, all while supporting local businesses is a great thing for everyone.” Baja Grill started as a food truck in 2011 and moved into its present cozy location in May 2014. Word of mouth has been the prime catalyst for each step in the restaurant’s growth. In turn, Craig has come to know his clientele well enough to listen to their requests, from menu suggestions to pondering the future growth of the business. “We just came out with new menu items, and we were able to include salads — which have been a big request by our customers,” he says. “Growing the restaurant and opening other locations is something that’s always a possibility, as well.”

ADKINS, MCNEILL, SMITH & ASSOCIATES 11621 Rainwood Rd., Ste. 4 501-960-6040 caroljenkins.com Carol Jenkins, real estate agent with Adkins, McNeill, Smith & Associates, started selling houses in 1974; two years later, she moved to Hillcrest. “Everyone loves Hillcrest,” she says. “All of the schools are great. My kids and their friends grew up walking to public schools, and kids from all over Little Rock come into Hillcrest to go to Mount St. Mary and to Catholic High. It’s a great place to sell because the buyers sincerely want to live here.” Carol has been around this game long enough to know a good deal when she sees one and for her money, it doesn’t get any better in the real estate game than the charming cottages and sprawling family homes under the mature trees that abound in Hillcrest. Even so, she says the family atmosphere and walkable neighborhoods are just part of the package; what really sells the Hillcrest neighborhood are the people who live and work there. “As of August, 2016 I have been selling for 42 years. We have some great agents working in Hillcrest that I am pleased to call my friends. We talk every few days and help each other out when we need help. “I love to work with nice people and 99 percent of the people I meet in Hillcrest are

CHARLOTTE JOHN CHARLOTTE JOHN COMPANY 5813 Kavanaugh Blvd., 501-664-5646 charlottejohn.com Charlotte John came to a crossroads nearly 35 years ago when the former teacher pondered a career change. “When I decided to go into sales after teaching school for several years, my choices were insurance or real estate,” she recalled. “I was attracted to selling houses because I thought it might be exciting and fun.” When she and her husband, Dent Gitchel, moved to the Heights, Charlotte soon brought The Charlotte John Company here too, setting up in a storefront on Kavanaugh Boulevard. The place immediately felt like home both for the couple and for Charlotte’s real estate business. “We found [the Heights] to be a most charming and convenient place to live,” she says. “My real estate company moved to only two short blocks from our home. I was able to walk to work! I jokingly say that when I get old, I can ride an electric wheelchair to the office and my agents can prop me up in the front window.” All told, 37 agents work out of the Little Rock office and take full advantage of the small-town neighborhood feel of the Heights neighborhood. DOMESTIC DOMESTIC 5501 Kavanaugh Blvd., Ste. C, 501-661-1776 domesticdomestic.com Heather Smith is on her sixth start-up business, a track record that’s forged a hard-andfast rule for the Piggott native (and soon to be first-time mom): focus as much as possible on one venture at a time. And while offers pour in from around the region to duplicate the successful model of Domestic Domestic, her men’s gift and accessories store in the Heights, she’s sticking to it. As simple and ordered as things may appear at Domestic Domestic, the concept was one that rattled the local retail market. Domestic Domestic is a boutique for men that is more cabin than couture, with a commitment to feature only American-made products. “People were pretty skeptical that we could stock an entire store and people would want everything that we had,” she says. “I think people saw it more like we were just going to sell American flags and that was it.” Heather says that while the collection includes Arkansas-made products, part of the formula relies on maintaining balance in the inventory. “We’re always open to more Arkansas makers and local makers,” she says. “But at the same time, we’re not going to pigeon-hole ourselves and be just the Arkansas store.”

BOSWELL MOUROT FINE ART 5815 Kavanaugh Blvd., 501-664-0030 boswellmourot.com Kyle Boswell operates galleries in both Little Rock and Miami, and he says the two places couldn’t be more different in terms of dynamic. “It’s a true neighborhood,” Kyle says of his gallery’s home in the Heights. “I’m surrounded by local businesses. The local galleries refer customers to each other. That’s something you don’t see in Miami. We still have that mentality of cooperation here.” Boswell Mourot has been one of the key players in the growth of Arkansas’s art scene,
fact that the neighborhoods are so centrally located. “Everything is close by,” she says. “You need to go to the airport? Downtown? West Little Rock? You can be there in 10 minutes. And now we have a Target in Midtown.” In addition to the convenience, Allison also cites the neighborhood’s festivals and events as things that make it so attractive. “I serve as the secretary of the Heights Neighborhood Association,” she says. “We plant trees and hold great events like Chili Fights in the Heights.” It’s all part of what makes a neighborhood more than just a place to live.

I spent time following the Grateful Dead,” he says with a laugh. “I loved the music and I loved the support among the community.” It was just such a sense of community that made Joel realize how special his hometown was. “I love showing off our community,” Joel says. “Things like Shop n’ Sip and HarvestFest have helped me succeed because they bring people together.” Joel’s Rock River Realty has become a center of those events, including live music on the porch during Shop n’ Sip. To Joel, it’s the least
he can do to give back to a community that has done so much for him.

The result is one of the best selections of fine art in the region. “Little Rock has a stable, upwardly mobile population,” says Kyle of his clientele. “Education in art is growing. We have incredible public art.” The result is a public hungry for unique, excellent art — and nothing gives Kyle Boswell greater pleasure than supplying it.
THE JANET JONES COMPANY 7915 Cantrell Rd., 501-224-3201 janetjones.com Since 1980, Janet Jones has been showing off Little Rock to people looking for a home. But she’s lived here far longer. “I grew up in the house I still live in. Raised my children there,” she says. “I love my neighborhood. There’s such a sense of community. I love the trees and the parks.” It’s just that sort of atmosphere that draws many of Janet’s clients to the neighborhood. “Some people have lived here before and seek it out. Others have lived in older neighborhoods in other cities and like that feel,” she says. It’s a sense of accessibility and the smalltown charm of the Heights and Hillcrest that Janet loves the most, though. “I’ve worked in real estate for many years, and I’m always proud to show off Little Rock. It’s a friendly, beautiful city. It’s easy to get around — and that goes for the Heights and many other n neighborhoods.”

ness district as Kaitlin and her eight employees discovered what set the neighborhood clientele apart. “We love the Heights,” she says. “It’s very community-oriented. People who live in this neighborhood want the businesses here to succeed and they quickly become your friends. When a customer comes in it isn’t like in some places where you get ‘Can I help you?’ and that’s it. We’re all about, ‘How’s your family? How are the kids?’ “That’s why we want everyone to know that we’re not changing or leaving; we’re the same people with the same friendly service and great merchandise, just two blocks down.” THE PIZZERIA 4910 Kavanaugh Blvd, 501-551-1388 pizzeria-santalucia.com Moving right across the parking lot from its original location inside Terry’s Finer Foods, The Pizzeria is now offering expanded seat-
ing and an outdoor dining space. “The dining room itself still has that small, comfy, cozy atmosphere that everyone loved about the original location,” says Dillon Garcia, bar manager. “It still has the tall ceilings; it still has the big wall of booths with the library ladder. One great thing that’s we have added though, is the patio out front — which will be really nice addition to the restaurant right there on the corner.” The improvements upgraded the Heights favorite from 700 square feet to 3,700 square feet, which translates to room for 40 guests inside and around 20 outside. A private dining option is also now available. This is the second progression in the restaurant’s growth. It traces its roots back to about 2012 when founders Jeremy and Jacquelyn Pittman forged a reputation with their Pizzeria Santa Lucia food truck. Two years later, it moved into Terry’s. “[Remodeling] started off really slow,”

STEAMROLLER BLUES 5801 Kavanaugh Blvd., 501-661-4067 steamrollerblues.com When a banner went up advertising Steamroller Blues’ retail location was for lease, devoted customers of the Heights store went into a mild panic. Happily, the Jonesborobased women’s fashion boutique was simply moving to a more visible location right down the street. “We actually considered [the new space] when we opened this store, but it needed a lot more work then,” says Kaitlin Minton, store manager. “Since we’ve been here, the former tenants finished it out and made it beautiful. It’s on a corner and gives us a lot more visibility.” Founded in 1994, Steamroller Blues opened its Little Rock location in 2013, and just opened a Rogers store this summer. The fashion-forward boutique quickly became a cornerstone of the Heights’ walkable busi-

It really started picking up around July when we really got full hands on deck.” THE SHOPPES ON WOODLAWN 4523 Woodlawn Dr., 501-666-3600 Stacy and Ivan Wilson reached their one-year anniversary of ownership of the Shoppes on Woodlawn in October and the unique store has never looked better. “The Shoppes on Woodlawn is a house with 12 or 13 rooms and each room has a different a different product,” Stacy says. “We do everything from women’s clothing, children’s clothing, home décor, Arkansas products, dog products; it’s pretty much kind of a one-stop shop. When we came in, we more or less just gave it a facelift and added some new vendors that we hadn’t had before.” Among the unique vendors located at the Shoppes are Faux Pas Boutique women’s clothing and accessories; Tisha’s Interiors accessories and gifts; Just Dogs! Gourmet dog treats and accessories; Pomegranate Moon women’s clothing and imported accessories; Ximena and Elle luxury yarn and clothing; Spark Modern home décor pillows, Robinson Lane Jewelry and The Little Chick children’s boutique. According to Stacy, the eclectic mix of vendors makes shopping at the Hillcrest location a unique experience. “The shop’s been completely remodeled over the past year,” she says. “We’ve updated our baby and children’s area to add more. We’ve added new vendors. We have custom jewelry. Basically, The Shoppes has kind of unique stuff that you’re really not gonna find in other places because a lot of our stuff is made by local artists.” DIET CENTER 4910 Kavanaugh Blvd., 501-762-0623 dietcentercentralarkansas.com Karen Williams first discovered the successful weight-management model of Diet Center in 1979, and in August she carried her faith in the system into ownership of the Heights franchise. Mrs. Polka Dot has been around for a decade, offering unique gifts for all ages. The store provides a variety of processes for personalizing each gift from embroidery to heat press and other options. “We do all sorts of gifts for a newborn all the way to someone who’s a senior,” Gina says. “We do personalization of anything and just about everything.” Mrs. Polka Dot also operates a pop-up location at Pleasant Ridge Shopping Center during November and December to accommodate customers living in west Little Rock. Gina says the name recognition of the store as well and the unique inventory it provides is a big reason Mrs. Polka Dot has thrived all these years. “People like to go to small boutiques these days, they don’t want to go to the mall,” she says. “Being located in an old house and really close to everything just makes it very special. We have things that a lot of other people don’t.” n

eople out for a walk with their dogs are a ubiquitous sight in the Heights, Hillcrest, and Riverdale neighborhoods. Parks and dog-friendly patios abound in these areas, and lots of businesses even set out water bowls for thirsty passing pooches. Many families, if not most, include a furry member — or ten — and we all want the very best care for our “children.” These new and longtime area businesses are serving the needs of animals and the humans who love them.

Neighborhood dogs know where they hide the treats! Next time you’re walking Fido in the Heights, stop in to check out Doggy Daddy’s selection, which changes constantly, especially approaching the holidays. CARE FOR ANIMALS 5516 Kavanaugh Blvd. 501-603-CARE careforanimals.org The mission of CARE, the Heights animal rescue organization, is twofold. Firstly, it rescues and rehomes cats and dogs in local shelters facing euthanasia by placing them in
foster homes and the Paws in Prison program in partnership with the Arkansas Department of Correction until they are adopted. The second emphasis is spay-and-neuter initiatives to help decrease the numbers of animals without homes in the first place. In addition to low-cost spay and neuter vouchers from participating local veterinary clinics, it hosts mobile spay and neuter clinics multiple times throughout the year in partnership with local humane societies and shelters such as Little Rock Animal Village. Keep an eye out for low-cost microchipping clinics and dog washes and fun seasonal events like their booth at the Hillcrest HarvestFest and Paws with Santa Claus in Cammack Village. CARE’s primary message to the Little Rock community is: make sure to sterilize your pets, and “adopt, don’t shop.” In other words, why buy a pet when there are so many in need of good homes? And every time you adopt one, you open up a spot in a shelter or rescue for another one. As its logo suggests, CARE for Animals is the heart of the Heights community in more than just location. BELLEVUE ANIMAL CLINIC 7824 Cantrell Rd. 501-225-2444 littlerockvets.com Bellevue Animal Clinic has been in operation longer than the Heights has been part of Little Rock. Founded in 1948 in the rural Bellevue community when Highway 10 was still a gravel road, the veterinary clinic has adapted decade after decade to changing medical practices and community needs. Bellevue has seen a shift from the way we
think about our pets; these days, they’re family members. The clinic understands that mindset. Drs. Tad Marvin and Julie Pate and their close-knit staff are on a first-name basis with clients and their pets. Specializing in companion animals (mainly dogs and cats, but also what are known as “pocket pets”—hamsters, gerbils, and other small softies), their goal is to help clients keep their animals right there beside them and as active as possible. One frequently overlooked aspect of pet care that Bellevue emphasizes is dental health, just one example of the personalized, holistic attention your pet will get there. Because it’s actually one of three clinics under one veterinary umbrella, even if you encounter an issue not typically handled on-site, Bellevue offers access to a network of specialists, not to mention a vast knowledge-base and decades of experience. Also available are grooming and boarding services. You can’t ask for much more than Bellevue Animal Clinic’s mission in a nutshell, summed up by Dr. Marvin: “We will treat every pet as our own and strive to give every client the very best support.”
hi—with adorable accessories and healthy treats on sale in the storefront, ready smiles and advice, and plenty of happy pooches to pet, the Dog Porch has quickly become a favorite stop for locals out on a walk.
At Gina’s Pet Salon, grooming isn’t just about looking pretty, though your furry friend is guaranteed to come out looking red-carpet ready; it’s about providing expert, compassionate care to keep animals at their best, inside and out.
GINA’S PET SALON 2017 Kavanaugh Blvd. 501-280-0063 Find us on Facebook! It’s always relaxing to sit back in the barber’s chair while someone spiffs you up. At Gina’s Pet Salon, the same goes for your dog. With 35 years of grooming experience, much of that in veterinary clinics, and for the past five years, her quaint, bustling shop in Hillcrest, Gina Drawbaugh has been described as a magician. “She can take a dustmop and have it looking gorgeous—and the pet had a good time!” says Maria, Gina’s cousin and coworker. With three groomers and several other dedicated caretakers on staff, including a few family members, the gentle atmosphere of the salon invites both animals and owners in for a chat and a treat—locally made dog

Having spent three years developing the original concept that opened doors this past July, owners Mandy and Justin have thought of everything: in addition to grooming services, Hounds Lounge offers luxury boarding, doggie day care, all-natural consumables, cruelty-free grooming products, and uniquely, a selfwashing spa with supplies provided where you can give your furry friend a bath without destroying your bathroom. Its welcoming and laid-back atmosphere makes it the perfect place for pups to relax and have fun while you’re working or traveling or right there with them for some DIY pampering. Hounds Lounge offers individual luxury hotel rooms for rest and meals, fenced indoor and outdoor play areas for off-leash play, and 24/7 staffing by employees trained in dog behavior, you know you’re leaving your dog in capable, loving hands at Hounds Lounge. THE DOG PORCH 2619 Kavanaugh Blvd. 501-725-4523 facebook.com/dogporch If you’re out and about in Hillcrest during the daytime, chances are you’ll catch a glimpse someone from The Dog Porch out for a walk with a pack of pups. Owner Shanna Barnard is committed to getting her charges the activity and stimulation they need when they’re away from their masters, and the pups love it as much as the owners. After only two years in business, the Dog Porch, a self-proclaimed “hole in the wall” grooming, daycare, and boarding service right on Kavanaugh in Hillcrest, is pretty much always at capacity. Barnard understands that dogs thrive on contact with people and opts not to use kennels, finding that her small space provides the perfect atmosphere for the personalized attention dogs need. She and her staff of dog lovers know every animal by name and treat both clients and pets as family, staying in close contact with Hillcrest Animal Hospital right down the street, so you don’t have to worry about your dog while you’re at work or on vacation. When you’re in town, stop in to say
biscuits for the pet and chocolates for the parent. Stop in for a quick nail clipping after a trip to the Hillcrest Farmer’s Market just down the street, or drop your pet off for a total makeover, bath, haircut and all. And don’t forget to give Smoky the Shop Kitty a quick ear-scratch; you’ll usually see him holding down the fort from Gina’s wide windowsill.

the city offers the time-tested, personalized, small-business care you look for in a veterinary practice. Open since 1964, the clinic has only ever been under the management of two doctors: Dr. Robert J. Van Patter, its founder, and Dr. Don Barnett, who practiced as Dr. Van Patter’s partner for several years starting in 1990 before taking over. Dr. Barnett and his expert, hands-on staff treat mostly cats, dogs, and “pocket pets” (hamsters, gerbils, ferrets and similar animals), with the occasional horse thrown in. They offer boarding, grooming, and animal medicine and surgery and stay on top of the latest advances in veterinarian technology. The clinic has seen the city grow around it in the past fifty years, but its clientele really hasn’t changed much: they love their pets as much as ever and place their trust in Cantrell Animal Clinic to keep them happy and healthy. n

MAKING HISTORY BY MICHAEL ROBERTS
The facade of the original Browning’s.
A
city has many hearts, and Little Rock is no different. The River Market and resurgent Main Street corridor are certainly areas where the pulse of the city beats strongly, while new growth in both Midtown and out west have accelerated rapidly in recent years. But as the city has grown and changed, succeeded and struggled, the area now known as the Heights and Hillcrest have become one of the city’s most vital and vibrant areas — a true heart if ever there were one. That all seems obvious now, but there was never any guarantee that the area would
Forest Park’s swimming pool was a city block long and half as wide. become what it has today. Incorporated in 1905 as the Town of Pulaski Heights, the area served as a “streetcar suburb” where a few hundred people made their homes. And despite officially becoming part of Little Rock in 1916, the area retains a unique character and feel that some describe as “like a small town inside the city.” A century after the Town of Pulaski Heights was folded into the capital city, the neighborhoods it became are two of the most desirable places to live — something that was far from the case when planning first

began back in 1890. H.F. Auten and Edgar E. Moss, a couple of Michigan lawyers, purchased 800 acres of land just northwest of Little Rock’s then-city limits, started lining up investors to buy lots…and then immediately hit the wall. The reason? Access. It’s hard to imagine today, but at the turn of the last century, getting from what’s now Kavanaugh Boulevard into Little Rock was a time-consuming commute in a horse and buggy. A promised streetcar line wasn’t built until 1903, leaving the eight or so families (including the Autens and Mosses) stranded

EDUCATING THE FUTURE E
xcellence in education is a feature of Heights, Hillcrest and Riverdale schools, both public and private. Each neighborhood provides great teachers, wonderful facilities and some of the best extra-curricular activities in Arkansas. FAIR PARK EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER (Pre-K) 616 N. When the streetcar finally began running down what is now Kavanaugh Boulevard, developers launched a blitz of newspaper advertisements highlighting both the natural beauty of the area and the man-made amenities like electricity and sewer. Somewhat optimistically, these advertisements predicted that the area was destined to become Little Rock’s greatest neighborhood. Sometimes dreams do come true. Despite the successes in marketing and development — including the opening of a 160-acre amusement park named Forest Park in 1904 — the growth of the neighborhoods had a darker side: segregation. Today, the blatant racism in advertisements describing the area as “exclusively for white people” without “negroes or shanties” seems unthinkable, a relic of an ancient era that in actuality was not all that long ago. Such racist policies would continue for decades, including restrictions that required singlefamily homes in the Prospect Terrace, Cliffewood and Edge Hill areas to be sold only to “those wholly of the Caucasian race.” Diversity remains a concern to the present day. Throughout its history, the Heights and Hillcrest neighborhoods have been one of the rare areas of Little Rock that have never experienced any major downturns or decline. Residents pride themselves on the number of locally owned businesses that thrive along Kavanaugh Boulevard, and although it has been part of Little Rock for a hundred years, there’s still that small-town sense of neighborly affection everywhere you go. n

number one item on our menu for uniqueness and flavor.” Variations on the dish include one with soft shelled crab and another with sushi-grade smoked salmon. It’s paired with a bowl of seasonal fruit and a sweet potato hash consisting of murasaki imo (the purple Japanese sweet potato), traditional white potatoes and orange sweet potatoes, chunked and roasted with herbs and served with a soy and ginger reduction drizzled at its heart. Other purely brunch items include shrimp
noodles and a few other items that we feel are good for early-in-the-day kind of dining.” Those dishes include bibimbap, a Korean dish of chicken and mushrooms over coconut rice with kimchi, carrots, squash and cilantro with a chili sauce and an egg on top. There are also a couple of steamed buns, a rice bowl and a curry amongst those options. Kemuri’s well-known sushi bar is also open on Sunday mornings, and it’s a good time for great deals. For instance, the Super Vegas Roll (normally $14) comes paired with a Bomb Roll for $12. Bento and sashimi are also specially priced for brunch. Diners seeking Sunday sustenance can relax at a wood-topped table in one of the restaurant’s rooms or take their ease at the translucent white sushi bar, where they can watch well-trained professionals deftly slice and assemble rolls and plates. RIVERDALE 10 2600 Cantrell Rd., 501-296-9955 riverdale10.com Date night at the movies has been a ritual of dating since movies came into existence. Now the combination of dinner-and-a-date is close at hand, thanks to Riverdale 10’s expanded concession. For those bored with the options of popcorn, soft drinks and JuJubees or Mike and Ike’s, Riverdale 10’s options open up the opportunity for opulent dining and movie viewing, complete with an array of alcoholic beverages to boot. Many of the options available originated at the Market Street Cinema. In 2014, Market Street Cinema’s owner Matt Smith closed the well-known West Little Rock theater and moved his operation into the recently emptied Riverdale 10 Cinema on Cantrell Road. Smith’s team updated both sound and picture by bringing in Dolby Digital Sound and Barco digital projectors, and added comfort in the form of electroniLACEY THACKER
KEMURI 2601 Kavanaugh Blvd., 501-660-4100 kemurirestaurant.com Ah, brunch. Cloth napkins and cool jazz. Quiet conversations. Pancakes and eggs Benedict. These are expectations that come with a mid-range restaurant on a Sunday morning. But at Kemuri, the brunch comes with an unexpected twist. General manager Manjeev Demel says this brunch comes with an intentional, unexpected twist.

eople in the Heights, Hillcrest and Riverdale love to eat — and the neighborhood’s restaurants reflect that. From brunch to coffee to dinner and a show, there’s something here for everyone.
Mylo Coffee Co. “We wanted to offer a brunch that was a little outside the box,” says general manager Demel. “It’s a play on brunch with just a trace of Japanese fusion. MYLO COFFEE CO. 2715 Kavanaugh Blvd., 501-747-1880 mylocoffee.com One of the greatest downfalls of many coffee shops is that they often don’t serve a full menu. Thus, if you’re working in one for a few hours, eventually your stomach will force an exodus. Mylo Coffee Co. in Hillcrest does not suffer from this affliction. It not only serves a great selection of coffee and tea, but also offers breakfast pastries, brownies, lox and bagels, sausage rolls and more. As a result, they’ve become one of the most popular coffee shops in Little Rock.
Even better, they’re expanding. While owner Stephanos Mylonas has refused to comment, the obvious work at the former Afterthought club location next door to Mylo has Hillcrest buzzing with excitement. In regard to coffee, naturally, the latte at Mylo is consistently one of the best. Branch out and get the version with a vanilla bean mixed in. The resulting latte is lightly sweet and full of the flavors of the fresh vanilla bean. Pair it with house-made lox, a Scotch egg or
— and these tacos are an exemplary mix of color, texture and arrangement. The crispy fried Mahi-mahi is fresh and generous, with two pieces in each taco. The Napa cabbage is a nice complement, but the best part just might be the mango-radish salsa on top. It’s a delight. a number of pastries for a great breakfast. Then come back for lunch and grab one of Mylo’s great sandwiches. It’s a more than just a neighborhood coffee shop.
LULU’S CRAB BOIL 5911 R. St., 501-663-2388 luluscrabboil.com There are few names more synonymous with the Little Rock dining scene than those of Bill and Lulu Chi. For nearly four decades, the Chi name has represented great food in a variety of styles — but fresh seafood has always been a cornerstone of what they do. At the couple’s latest venture, fresh crawfish, oysters, shrimp — and of course, crab — form the backbone of a tasty menu that has drawn rave reviews from across Little Rock. For folks used to the superior Asian food at Chi’s various locations across town, Lulu’s Crab Boil will come as a pleasant surprise — it’s the sort of food any Southerner will find familiar, made with an expertise developed all the way n in Shangdong, China.

cally adjustable individual pleather recliners with amply sized wooden trays, perfect for a movie dining experience. Riverdale 10’s concession menu includes a veritable buffet of movie-appropriate wonders. Alongside popcorn and hot nuts you’ll find all-beef Eisenberg hot dogs, toasted raviolis and White Castle sliders. Boneless Buffalo chicken wings, chicken tenders, loaded fries and nachos are also available. This pub fare goes well with the 21 different beers available, including local favorites such as Lost Forty Day Drinker and Diamond Bear Southern Blonde. A variety of wines including Chardonnay, White Zinfindel and Merlot are also available. Nonalcoholic options include sodas, coffee and cappuccino. Riverdale 10 also offers a monthly ice cream favorite from Loblolly Creamery. The theater offers a variety of feature films every day, including a selection of art-house and indie films, family favorites and cult classics. Several local events are held at the theater each year, including the Lulu’s Crab Boil 48 Hour Film Festival. A stage and lobby area offer space for live acts and performances as well. But for you and your date, this is the place for reclining, relaxing and sharing some T-ravs and brews with a documentary or tearjerker you won’t find in other Arkansas theaters.
