The O.G.s

The “original gangsters” of Little Rock: These business veterans have been rocking it for more than 25 years and counting! Small

business is the backbone of commerce in America. Opening a business can sometimes be “easy,” while maintaining a business requires dedication to customers,

THE FADED ROSE

1619 Rebsamen Park Road 501-663-9734 Owners: Ed, Laurie and Zac David The Faded Rose has brought N’awlins cuisine to Arkansas for 36 years now. Founded in May 1982, Ed and Laurie moved from Dallas to Little Rock specifically to open a restaurant. Ed was born and reared in New Orleans and wanted to bring the region’s cuisine to a new area. He considered Albuquerque. Thankfully, there was less red tape involved here, so he, Laurie and Zac, just an infant at the time, made their way here. “This is our original location, here on Rebsamen, however, it’s not our original building,” Zac said. He joined the business when he was just 14 years old, bussing tables and washing dishes. He rejoined The Faded Rose in management in 2004 after graduating from college. Ed chose 1615 Rebsamen as the building fit his

vision; however, in 2000, he moved the restaurant to its current location next door. “It’s so close a lot of people don’t even realize it’s not the same building,” Zac said. The other thing that has remained consistent: their menu. Customer favorites such as their gumbo, steaks and the house salad as well as their shrimp and grits have been on the menu for a long time. “Although diners can get these dishes at other restaurants, we offer traditional New Orleans/ South Louisiana dishes that are popular because of their [authenticity],” he added. Ever wondered about the restaurant’s name? It’s based on lyrics from the 1972 hit “Delta Dawn.”

7915 Cantrell Road 501-224-3201 janetjones.com Owner: Janet Jones Casey Jones — no relation to Janet — joined The Janet Jones Company 28 years ago. He was impressed by the company’s reputation. “The associates here have a reputation for expertise, professionalism and integrity. We treat people with respect and have an excellent knowledge of the market,” Jones said. Establishing that reputation began April 1, 1980, when Janet Jones founded the company with the help of her husband, Bud Jones.“It may sound a bit corny,” Janet Jones said, “But I love Little Rock, and I love people. Starting this company allowed me to combine my love for people and my community.” Today, The Janet Jones Company has 35 agents. Their office is located on Cantrell Road, which is ideal as it’s close to downtown and equally close to Chenal. "The homes we sell in Central Arkansas run the spectrum from first-time homeowners to estate properties. We have the top agents in just about every market,” Casey Jones said. “The quality of our agents and their knowledge is what sets us apart.” Janet echoed this. “Our team grows every year, so we have a good mix of new members with ‘fresh eyes’ and those who have been with the company for 20, 25 and 30 years. Many of them grew up here in Little Rock, which makes a difference. [It's one reason why] we have been the leading real estate company in the Heights, Hillcrest, Midtown and Riverdale neighborhoods of Little Rock for years.” Casey added that he’s proud to be a part of a company whose agents have a team-oriented approach. “We work hard to exceed our customer’s expectations.”

Peter Brave

2010 N. Van Buren St. 501-663-5937 cheersith.com Owners: Chris and Samantha Tanner Cheers is a neighborhood favorite. The restaurant offers tasty American cuisine, a relaxed atmosphere ideal for family dining, yet sophisticated enough for special occasions, especially in its private dining room.

BRIAN CHILSON

2300 Cottondale Lane., Suite 105 501-663-2677 bravenewrestaurant.com Owner: Peter Brave Twenty-seven years ago, Peter Brave opened the doors of Brave New at 3701 Cantrell Road for the sweet sum of $40,000, including the inventory, tables, chairs, walkins and ovens. He reupholstered the chairs himself. “I love this neighborhood. I was raised at the top of the hill,” Brave said. So, when he had the opportunity to expand his business while remaining in the area, he took it. “The area was exploding and this was one of the last developments between downtown and west [Little Rock].” Investing in the building, which overlooks the Arkansas River, allowed Brave to serve more customers and to add a party room. “Our river view is incredible. We get to see bald eagles in our trees, red foxes on the ridge … a menagerie of wildlife,” he said, describing the best thing about his location. While Brave has had to stay current, he said it’s important not to chase trends. “We stick with what we know. We’ve seen lots of ups and downs, economic trends — that’s the environment of the restaurant business — but we will not lose our identity.” Favorites like the walleye, salmon, pork tenderloin and shrimp and basil dishes keep customers coming, and now Brave New is serving secondgeneration customers. And even now, nearly 30 years later, Brave said the business still feels “brave and new.”

Owners: Joe and Mickey Searcy Rhea Drug Store has a long history in Little Rock. The store has been in the heart of Hillcrest since 1922. Joe and Mickey Searcy have owned it since 1983. “Joe began working here the day after he got out of college in 1979,” Mickey said. “Hillcrest is a great community. The residents support local businesses — they’ve been very supportive of us.” The Searcys have supported them in return. Their employees include youths whose parents once worked for them. “That’s one of the biggest things about small pharmacies, we grow with the families we serve. We’re all about customer service.” Of course, staying relevant is more than just outstanding customer service, knowing your customers by name, and offering unique, stylish merchandise and gifts. It’s also about being part of the “21st century,” Searcy said. “We now have a website so you can fill your prescription online and a mobile app, even though we’re an old-style pharmacy.” Joe and Mickey also offer delivery and count among their clientele second- and third-generation customers. They establish and maintain relationships with their customers and know when they’re sick and/or have suffered a loss. “That’s something you don’t necessarily get from a larger store or a chain pharmacy,” she added.

THE OYSTER BAR

3003 W. Markham 501-666-7100 Owner: Virginia Boyd This favorite neighborhood restaurant was founded in 1975 and is housed in its original location, built in 1924, at the corner of Markham and Booker Streets, near Kavanaugh. Owner Virginia Boyd purchased the restaurant in 1984. Boyd said, “My parents had a Tastee Treat [an ice cream shop], and I’d worked there in high school and throughout college. Later I worked at The Oyster Bar part time to supplement my income.” Boyd was a social worker by profession; however, after several years, she became burned out. So when the owner of The Oyster Bar decided he wanted out, she purchased it. “I wanted to be my own boss, and I thought I could make the transition.” Initially she had a partner, but she bought him out after 5 years. “It was a risk. I recently heard on a news show that 70 percent of new restaurants don’t make it.” The Oyster Bar has always been The Oyster Bar. Its menu is comprised of a mix of Louisiana cuisine and American favorites and includes gumbo, red beans and rice, shrimp and, of course, the namesake, oysters. It’s food that Boyd enjoys; she went to college in New Orleans, so the cuisine was familiar. Over the years, she’s made some changes, adding to the original menu, and converting the game room into dining space. The biggest change: “There were no windows! It was like working in a cave – adding windows was one of the first things we did.” Boyd’s secret to longevity? “I love being in the middle of a neighborhood — even in this old building that often needs repairs,” she said. In fact, she lives nearby in Hillcrest. “And consistency. We have a lot of crew members who have been with me for years. We also have regular customers, some local, others who visit from out of town, and still others who visit only once or twice a year.” No matter how often, they find The Oyster Bar like a longtime friend: welcoming and familiar.

820 S. Rodney Parham Road Rock Creek is also accessible from Kanis Park, which is conveniently located just off I-630. The park is ideal for those who love tennis, basketball, softball — there’s even a batting cage — and skating as it has the city’s first skate bowl. Picnics and fishing are also part of the fun available here.

MERIWETHER PARK

1401 Florida St. This city park is situated in a picturesque neighborhood and is ideal for families with small children as it has a “rocket ship” and slide, a rock-climbing wall, spinner, a merry-go-round and swings. Visitors will also enjoy the ease of its paved walking trails.
