OUR SPEAKERS Melissa Fults is the treasurer for Arkansas NORML and has actively fought for cannabis reform in Arkansas since April 2010. She and her husband, Gary, have advocated for patients, both through the initiative process and by testifying at many legislative committees, working to protect patient rights. She is currently working with a group of attorneys to develop a full legal initiative to free this plant in Arkansas.
Dr. Brian Nichol is a board certified anesthesiologist practicing chronic pain management in North Little Rock. The medical use of cannabis has been an interest of his since he noticed the improved quality of life his patients were experiencing by self-medicating with black market cannabis. He has been guiding patients on the effective medical use of cannabis and has been an advocate for more than two decades. Legalization of medical cannabis in Arkansas has brought medically guided cannabis treatment to the next level, with health professionals now being able to recommend specific chemovars, cannabinoid preparations, dosing and administration schedules for more optimal results in an individual. Interventional Pain Consultants provides consultations for patients seeking medical marijuana certifications in Arkansas. Personal consultations include an assessment, patient education and a specific medical cannabis treatment plan for each patient. Consultations for patients already holding medical marijuana cards but seeking to obtain better results are also available. Dr. Nichol continues to advocate for medical cannabis patients by developing relationships with the cannabis industry and providing education through personal appearances, social media, professional meetings, panel discussions and individual consultations.
Cathie Hiegel, CT has been working on medical marijuana research reading pub-med articles and attending CannaMed and other cannabis-related conferences since 2016. She has a background in cytology, which has to do with the study of cells and cancer. She works with Dr. Brian Nichol.
Dr. Brandon Thornton of Little Rock is co-owner and CEO of Steep Hill Arkansas, a cannabis science company with a focus on analytical testing. He provides pharmacist consultant solutions to cannabis businesses, including patient counseling on cannabis products, the creation of educational materials, physician outreach and staff training on pharmaceutical compounding methods. Dr. Thornton serves on the Quality Assurance & Patient Safety Committee of the American Society of Cannabis Pharmacists and as secretary for the Arkansas Cannabis Industry Association. He is a member of the Society of Cannabis Clinicians and has completed detailed cannabis training through their TCMI program. Thornton also has experience working in the Food and Drug Administration MedWatch program in Rockville, Maryland. He earned his doctor of pharmacy degree from McWhorter School of Pharmacy at Samford University and is licensed to practice pharmacy in multiple states.
