When planning a party, visualize the simple basics of a party and then build from there. Recall your own childhood memories of parties including guests, cake, games, and balloons. Start planning two to three months ahead to take every precaution from the beginning. Locations book up fast and sometimes it’s harder than you think to gather up every thing you will need for the party. On the following pages Savvy Kids offers party example ideas as well as where to go to get the things you need.

pring is an awesome time to host an outdoor birthday party. The weather is warm, but not hot; and the lush green grass and colorful flowers are mother nature's decorations. Consider throwing a springtime birthday party at a local park or playground. Rent a pavilion to share with your guests; the shade will be a comfortable place for parents to sit back and relax as they watch the kiddos play. Playground equipment will be all the entertainment your party guests need. You could also organize a sport to play--parents vs. kids would be a great way to get everyone involved. Consider purchasing a themed party supply package from a party supply store. SpongeBob SquarePants, Hello Kitty, Iron Man, and more are available and typically contain tablecloths, plates, napkins, cups, party hats, noisemakers and more for a price cheaper than purchasing each of the items separately. Also, be sure to bring trash bags (in case there aren't any at the pavilion), matches (to light the birthday candles), sunscreen and first-aid kit (just in case).

t the risk of stating the obvious: Arkansas summers are hot. What better way to beat the heat than with a water party. Whether you have a pool or a water hose, the party guests are sure to have fun. Stock up on water balloons, water guns, slip-n-slides and other water accessories and let the kids come up with their own games. Laughter will fill your backyard and warm your heart as you watch your birthday kid and their friends have a blast. Consider picking up some luau themed decorations. Tiki torches can help keep the mosquitoes at bay, brightly colored leis and hibiscus flowers will add a punch of color to your event. Consider picking up an ice cream cake for your guests to cool off with. You could also call Frosty Treats (501-791-3100) and request that one of their trucks drives through the neighborhood during your party. Each of your guests will be excited to pick their own sweet treats as they celebrate with you. Certainly make sure you have sunscreen and a first-aid kit on hand (just in case), a lighter or matches to light birthday candles, and life jackets on the chance some of your guests aren't strong swimmers.

fter a long hot summer, the cooler weather of autumn is always welcome. Consider hosting a party with fall activities in mind. Throw a costume party. The youngsters will love being able to wear their Halloween costumes (again). Pick up some small pumpkins and gourds in all shapes and sizes for your guests to decorate with paint, embellishments and stickers. Bob for apples, go for a hayride, or build a small haunted house (not too scary though!) in your garage. Many pumpkin patches open early during the fall months and are a great place to host a fall birthday party. Be sure to have blankets on hand in case it gets a little cooler than expected.

I volunteer at school as the junior class sponsor and am currently organizing the school prom. Both David and I are involved with the worship team at church. Between David's work at Arkansas Baptist and the Legislature, he’s pretty busy! Parenting Style: I'm not sure we have a style. We have a home full of dominant personalities—there are no wall flowers at the Sanders house! We try to be stern and straight forward (but understanding) with discipline and liberal with love and affection. I have used "attachment parenting" for little ones: Breastfeeding, co-sleeping, sling wearing. Dr. Sears' "The Baby Book" is my favorite parenting book. Life lesson learned from parenthood: There are things you think you need for yourself that you don't. With many children, we have learned to get along with little time to ourselves. Keeping it organized: We teach our kids to be responsible for their own things. I had a Sunday School teacher ask me to help Abigail remember to do her daily devotional. I told her I'd help Abigail come up with a way that

she could remember to do it herself, but I wouldn't remember to tell her every day. Abigail found a dry erase board that she attached her devotional with the question "have you had your devotion today?" That has reminded her to do it. I want my kids to be responsible for themselves, not responsible because they have a mom or dad doing everything for them. Advice for other busy parents to “keep it all together”: Remember, "This too shall pass." I say it all the time! (Sometimes I find myself chanting it.) And, sometimes things do fall apart--we're human. For those with big families, while it is good to do things together, individual time with each child is also important. Favorites: Book: Becca-Night Song by Tricia Goyer (of the ones I've read recently); DavidToo many to name, currently reading proposed legislation, and will switch back to books after the session. Music: Becca-Choral of course! Rene Clausen's "Prayer" is my favorite piece; David-Anything from U2! Place to shop for you: Becca-Target; David-Wherever a good deal can be found. Place to shop for kids: Target Family Activity: Becca-Going to First Baptist or Larry's Pizza West; Davidplaying hide and seek with the kids. Restaurant: Caper's Guilty pleasure: Becca-Dancing to 80s music; David-McDonald's French fries. Place to go for date night: Becca-Those are very, very rare, but dinner and a movie is my favorite…if we have time for both! David: Agreed. Vacation destination: With the family-Branson! We are hoping to make it to the beach this year. Won't leave home without: Becca-baby wipes and Visine; David-iPad.

Big Heart The story of how one young lady is using her talents to help others. By Emily Griffin

t first glance, Carrie White is your typical teen. She prefers her hair in a ponytail, has lots of friends and is looking forward to prom. Dig a little deeper and you will find a heart of gold and a young woman who puts the needs of others before her own. Carrie, a senior at North Little Rock High School, has overcome many hurdles in her young life. When she was nine, Carrie broke her foot. The break healed, but she now suffers from Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, a severe and debilitating condition that can occur when the nerves in the leg cease to function properly. Month-long visits to the hospital are common for her. But through it all she’s managed to keep a smile on her face. While staying in Arkansas Children’s Hospital during the holiday season, Carrie noticed the many gifts the hospital’s patients received. She also noticed that the vast majority of those gifts were for younger children—the teens seemed to be overlooked.

After being release from the hospital she spoke with one of her teachers at school, Patti Abbot, about her observation and that she wished there was something she could do. “Carrie said to me, ‘it would be so nice if a few of the businesses around town could donate some items geared toward older kids.’ I told her to go do it… and she did,” Abbot explained. Carrie started out by writing a letter to the managers of a number of local stores explaining her plan. She visited business owners personally, and on her own. The response from the community was tremendous. Carrie was able to fill 25 gift bags with $50 worth of merchandise. “I got donations from Kroger, Walmart, Hallmark and some other places,” Carrie recalled. She even got a few gift cards to give away or use to buy presents for the teens. “A lot of people could relate to the cause,” she said of Arkansas Children’s Hospital. “A lot of people have had a child there or has known someone who’s had a child there.” This service project is not Carrie’s first. She has been a Girl Scout since she was five, and serves on the North Little Rock Mayor’s Youth Council. She has volunteered for organizations like the Boys and Girls Clubs, the Rice Depot, Junior League of Little Rock, Women and Children First, among others. Carrie will graduate this spring. She plans to continue her education and hopes to obtain a degree in the medical field. “I’m keeping my options open, but I would really like to help other kids going through what I’ve been through,” she said. Get your spring clean on. Sunshine, daffodils, warm breezes—Spring is here and while we all want to relish in its beauty there comes a time we all must perform the dreaded spring cleaning duties. Don’t fret! Savvy Kids teamed up with a number of local professionals to get their tips and tricks to spring cleaning and organization.

Organization

Spring cleaning doesn’t have to be overwhelming. You might look at your child’s playroom, your kitchen, your closet and think there is so much to do; you’re not sure where to start. Nila Ciesiel, Senior Design Consultant for The Closet Factory in Little Rock says the first step to organizing your home is to go room by room. For example, if you’re looking to get your kitchen organized go drawer by drawer, cabinet by cabinet clearing out items you don’t use. “If you break it down into segments, it’s much easier to manage,” Ciesiel explained. She also explained parents need a lot of storage space. Diapers and wipes, socks and shoes, play clothes and dress clothes—kids have a lot of things that need a place to go. “The key is to use adjustable organization so your shelves and bins can grow with your children,” Ciesiel said. “Once everything has a place, it’s much easier for children to help mom and dad clean up.” Something to consider: hiring a company like The Closet Factory to organize closets may seem pricey on the front end. Adjustable storage systems, manufactured to fit your space, will last you the lifetime of your home and since they are modifiable, you can change and rearrange shelves to fit your needs each year.

Cleaning Services

Let’s face it. Some of us are not going to get on our hands and knees and clean baseboards, or dust behind the refrigerator. When you come to this realization there is only one thing to do: call a cleaning service! Debbie Hoskins, owner of Busy Bees, gave us the dirt on the dirt! When choosing a cleaning service the first thing to do is assess your needs. Make a list of the things you need done. Some services may offer all of the items on your list as a “basic” cleaning package; however, more detailed services are usually available. By using a service such as Busy Bees, house management services are available. House managers can run errands such as picking up dry cleaning, personal shopping, and help you schedule appointments. “This service provides families with more time together,” Hoskins added. Hoskins also said to be sure to get a good estimate before committing to anything. Look for services who offer a free consultation. 10 | savvy kids MARCH 2011

Nila’s Tip: When switching seasonal wardrobes in your closet, hang everything with the hanger’s hook facing you. As you wear the items, hang them back in your closet with the hanger’s hook facing away from you. As you're getting rid of items you no longer need/want/use, don't throw them out, donate the items to local non-profits so that your unwanted items can benefit other families. While there are a number of nonprofit organizations accepting donations, we narrowed down the list a bit and hope you will consider donating your items to one of these organizations.

etting my kids to help clean up can sometimes be more of a hassle than the chores themselves. There is usually a song to sing (“Whistle While You Work,” Dora’s “Clean Up” song, etc.), and occasionally a small bribe to get the crew to work. While I catch myself thinking “the house would already be clean if I just did it myself” I know that when you’re four, everything has a lesson. Assigning chores to our kids teaches them to be responsible. They smile with pride when they’ve accomplished the tasks at hand and learn to appreciate their things so much more (and if they always have to clean up their messes they might make fewer messes throughout the day). The key to assigning chores is to understand what your child is capable of handling. You shouldn’t ask a preschooler to unload the dishes from the dishwasher when they can’t even reach the cabinets. That’s just frustrating for everyone! Parents should also remember that while your kids are capable to doing many chores they may not know how until you show them. To the right are some age appropriate chores your children could help with.

An Academic Enrichment Program Preschool Through 12th Grade

Junior Kumon builds children’s pre-literacy skills at an early age by teaching them the letters of the alphabet including shapes and sounds, connecting them with the spoken and written word, having them listen attentively to stories and books read aloud, building their vocabulary, and assisting them to acquire basic phonics. Their pre-numeracy skills are fostered by teaching them how to count and write numbers, coaching them to recognize patterns of dots, and providing them with an understanding of basic addition. If your little boy wants to watch a car movie, get some black and white checkered material and some craft dowels and have guests make checkered flags as they arrive. MARCH EXHIBIT BADGES, BANDITS, AND BARS: AR LAW & JUSTICE March 1 thru 11: Old State House Museum presents: Badges, Bandits, and Bars: Arkansas Law & Justice explores the state’s history of crime, law enforcement, courts, and prisons from preterritorial days to the mid-1980s. The exhibit includes compelling artifacts and photographs donated by the Arkansas State Police and the Arkansas Department of Correction, as well as objects loaned by other institutions and individuals, and those from the Old State House Museum’s own collections. Selected from a collection of more than 70, the exhibit includes more than 30 train sets along with several environmental pieces. Albright was introduced to trains as a boy when his father was a train mechanic on the Pennsylvania Railroad. He has collected trains for 68 years, since his first electric train was given to him (at age 9) for Christmas in 1942. Savvy Baker turns four! Photos by Emily Griffin

5 Savvy Baker celebrated her 4th birthday with her friends at Just Scrap It in Sherwood. Savvy had her picture taken with each party guest as they arrived to the party. After the photos were printed she decorated picture frames for each guest to take home as a party favor. Party guests used a second copy of the photos to decorate a scrapbook page. When finished, all of the pages were put together in a scrapbook for Savvy to keep. Then, Savvy’s mom read aloud “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle. SEVERE WEATHER preparedness kit Ka-BOOM! When you’re a kid and spring storms make loud noises, it’s easy to be frightened. Savvy Kids teamed up with Today’s THV Meteorologist, Ed Buckner, to give you accurate information about what happens during a storm, and what the different weather watches and warnings mean. Buckner also showed us how to make a severe weather preparedness kit. Every home should have one of these kits before severe weather hits. Thunderstorm-A storm that has lightning and thunder. A thunderstorm is a cumulonimbus cloud and can contain strong wind, hail or heavy rain with it. Lightning-Lightning is a bright flash of electricity produced by a thunderstorm. All thunderstorms produce lightning and are very dangerous. If you hear the sound of thunder, then you are in danger from lightning. Thunder-Thunder is the sound lightning makes when it heats up the air around it very quickly. The heat from lightning causes the air to expand and then get smaller very quickly causing the loud boom you hear. Hail-Hail stones are made of ice and are created when rain drops get pushed back up into the cold cloud tops from strong updraft winds where they freeze. This continues until the hail stone gets too heavy to stay in the air and falls to earth. Hail can hurt animals and cause damage to crops. Tornado-A violently rotating column of air in contact with the ground.

If a warning is issued for your area you need to protect yourself. Severe Thunderstorm Watch-This means severe thunderstorms are possible and could develop at any time. Ed’s Tip: If a Tornado warning is issued for your home or business you should seek shelter on the lowest floor. A basement is best if available. Stay away from windows and protect yourself as best you can. Hallways, bathrooms and under stairways are usually safer areas. Try to find a place in the center of the house away from any exterior walls.
